MBB Post-season Thread

Now you're talking my language! We need to find a guy with a whole lot of pent up disgruntlement!! Assuming disgruntlement is even a word, that's where you will find Ken's whale with legs - who may, or may not, love to chase tail.

Wright makes less than Vandy is about to pay Bryce Drew.

That would have me disgruntled. But, I would be taking a pay cut for either of their jobs, so I don't really care.

Btw, to be "disgruntled" I guess that makes me "gruntled" since I'm content in my current role making radios?

I am just throwing that out there so, hopefully, some folks will start to understand that building a college basketball isn't just about tossing out big checks. Vandy just threw a big check at a question mark. Within $100k per year of what Texas gave to Shaka Smart, who went to a final four.

On that note, I would be very interested in hearing your opinion on Matt McCall. That's a name that has been prominent in my text inbox since yesterday afternoon.

My opinion is that he would be a good hire if we want a guy with a good but limited track record for less than we paid CBG.

I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with an established coach for about half a mil less than Vandy is paying Drew. Real world stuff doesn't always happen in Internet time. I really don't understand the panic mindset across the message boards.

Not buying these Mick Cronin rumors. Cincy is his Alma Mater. He did a CBC(actually was the USC-east coach for a night)and came back before the UNLV press conference. Not necessarily buying this bill of goods either, especially since this source has been shaky like others have:

Because it looks like a lesser hire, I'm expecting a poach of a more major "whale". Diversions.

I don't think you understood the tweet. He is saying GT need not rush because no similar jobs to GT are open. He can take his time and choose the best candidate.

Matt McCall seems like a name who will get attention in the future. He may have to go one more step up before attracting an A C C HC slot. Billy Donovan protege. Not for us right now, especially not right after CBG.

Might have to toss 2 mill. at a bigger fish.

I understood. But many including his buddies think we are needing to set our sights lower, that we can't attract an established P5. I not only think that's where we are going, it should be very, very soon.

McCall cashed a lot of tickets for me this past season against my book so I use that as a basis for full support. He will be hungry. Won't happen I know. Winning my ATS tickets is unfortunately not one of the primary drivers for the job apparently... though, it should be. :)

Thanks. He seems to be a guy with a high ceiling if we decide to go the blue-light special route. Now that we are the only P5 job remaining, I fully expect that we will be able to find an established guy at a reasonable market value. I get the feeling that MBob intentionally stuck it to Vandy in the final stages of that negotiation. Two point seven million for Bryce Drew is insane.

If McCall were to get the call at say $700K with lucrative incentives, where would you stand on that decision? I'm asking you because I'm asking myself the same question.

There isn't a hard time limit, however when you have three recruits hanging in the balance(costs are considerable in a recruiting budget, plus the concept of being fair to their futures)and at least two more scholarships to fill for next season....it is imperative to be steady but expedient.

This is not about pleasing the message boards. It is about selling tickets for 2016-17.

All for it. I've pretty much given up on getting someone with ACC experience. Apparently, that is not a characteristic Bobinski cares about at all.

Just sitting back now that we are past Tuesday and will wait to see how Bobinski plays his cards. I'll support whoever is HC - would have even done that if Drew had been hired, though I think would've been a huge mistake. What sickens me is somewhere in this world right now Paul Hewitt is LHAO.

Side note regarding McCall...he didn't play college basketball. CPJ didn't play college football. If we were to sign McCall (and I think that is a longshot that we would), how far back would you have to go to find a school who has both its FB and MBB head coaches who didn't play the sport in college???

Cuonzo Martin, 45. California H.C.

It might happen. Thoughts?

Followed Cuonzo closely during his years at UT. He would be a great recruiter. His offenses are a mess. No scheme whatsoever. Just a bunch of running around one-on-one kind of stuff until somebody throws up a prayer. Very intense defense and feeds off of transition opportunities.

He is Hewitt all over again, except I don't think he will be as arrogant as the last 5 Year Plan of the Hewitt era. He would immediately get Tech on the radar with the kids in the ATL/GA area.

His teams will drive you nuts in a halfcourt game. Calling it an organized mess would be false because of including the word "organized". He will lead a bunch of great athletes who can win games on their own athleticism alone. At times though, it will look very ugly. Clogged toilet like. Very much like Hewitt indeed.

Bottom line, I'd welcome him with open arms. The idiot Vols fans treated him poorly and didn't appreciate what he brought to them post-Pearl. He navigated the waters fairly well post-Pearl and I was pleased for him that he left UT when he did after being crapped on like he was (and then reaching a Sweet 16 IIRC before leaving).

...and Kelly's Hewitt?

I'm not an insider on any of those paid sites, so not sure what they are saying. My four free articles are gone before the month starts with the AJC(I must owe back subscription dues, LOL!).

Edited, in response to Texwood.

Speaking of which, let's face it, Hewitt is looking for a job, and we are already paying him. How about we just connect the two until we finish the payoff. He's had a high-profile position before.

Hewitt's only job right now is to walk down to the mailbox periodically and collect a check from Tech. Having said that, I'd be open to Hewitt coming back and coaching our softball team. That program needs significant help.

See the links I posted up the thread just a bit. Unsure of the contract scenario, but reading more and more, it makes sense to me now why Martin may be open to moving away from Berkeley. He may fit the "disgruntled" and "hungry to prove himself elsewhere" need you may have, mate. (j/k)

5 of Martin's last 6 seasons have resulted in double-digit wins in the regular season conference. 5 of those were in so-called power conferences (3 in Knoxville and 2 with tree huggers).

With Rabb and Brown contemplating(of course they can declare now, without actually having to leave), and Williams trying to feverently get a contract in place today for his basketball coach...

So far all the projections and timelines discussed in the media have pretty much come and gone. I guess that means few of them were from Bobinski himself, as I suspected. Often, that talk is from agents trying to stir up talk for their clients.

I was surprised Vandy gave Drew so much, but I am sure his agent was using the GT talk to push his contract. It obviously worked for him.

No, actually Bobber was quoted from the press conference dismissal of CBG. Artificial deadline or not, he said it then.

My belief is that the intent was there to have a coach by this week. Still might happen. He knows the parameters of the outline. Bob. didn't need to speak, nothing is private within social media.

Why is FF tweeting this now? I thought Capel this past Friday came out and announced he wants to stay and rub K's back longer. I'm still surprised Mrs. Capel went along with her husband rubbing K's back for a substantial fraction of what he could make in Atlanta while getting his own back rubbed.

Hitler Youth in action.

Heil Ratface! Whatever he says, we (blindly) follow.

Because Grayson Allen announced he is coming back next year. It has tripped up much discussion.

I must be missing something. How does Grayson Allen coming back lead to FF saying something about Capel who has already said he isn't leaving? Just silly season stuff I assume?

Maybe Grayson Allen coming back means Demetris Robertson's agent-brother will go to Cal which will somehow spur Cuonzo Martin to go to Duke as assistant coach because Capel leaves to become head waiter at Mary Mac's Tea Room.

It just created discussion, which led to FF 'splain' why he thought Capel was staying, despite the GT job being a good fit for him.

It wasn't meant as news IMO.

Nor were the Watergate tapes, but look what they started.

Perhaps it will lead to Bobber stepping down under pressure?

BTW, what were those numbers for Hewitt's and Gregory's buy-outs? I'm sure that we could have afforded to bid with Vandy a bit longer had we not already had a large percentage of coach's salaries earmarked for repayment for venture capital.

I sure am glad we didn't bid any longer. He got crazy money for his accomplishments. They better be right or Vandy has a Hewitt-esque problem, without a final four to blame for it.

As long as they didn't give him The Eternal Rollover TM, they won't go thought what we have been through, and are still mired in.
