MBB Post-season Thread

Makes a lot of sense. But if it is Drew, our AD who speaks to nobody has folks close to him that love to talk. That dynamic is bizarre to me.

Never forget the agents, comrade. Like the Cold War.

Just catching up...a little disappointed in the Capel news, but there are other good candidates out there. My concerns remain with Drew though we can do worse. Overall, this is not looking good at all. But, I have to remind myself just how low our program has sunk. And, apparently we are not going to eclipse what we are paying CPJ to a hoops CEO. That's what it would take to get a sniff I guess from a Marshall or the like.

We'll see. I still say it will be Tuesday, though tomorrow will not surprise me as the key stakeholders should all be in hotels very close to one another in Houston.

It is looking fine.

FWIW, the folks I speak with tell me that the ceiling budget for this hire is in the exact same neighborhood as CPJ's compensation package.

He made 286k last year, according to Forbes.

Alec Peters is an AP HM AA, one year of eligibility left. Set to graduate at Valpo in Spring Semester. Avgd. almost 19 ppg., 9 rpg.

Peters and Drew have a tight relationship, so I'm pretty much expecting to see Peters on our roster next season.

The thing I'm most curious about is Drew's staff. For a hire like this to succeed, he needs savvy veteran assistants that know the lay of the land. I'd imagine much of this weekend was dedicated to assembling that staff. I will be awaiting with much anticipation for Drew's assistants to be named.

Not that I'm suggesting Kenny Anderson, but man has he been campaigning for an AC position.

Roger Powell, Jr. was a standout guard at Illinois. Been with CBD since he took the HC job. He will definetly bee coming unless Valpo hires him in the top spot:

I guess we're very special in someone's eyes. That's nice.

If Vandy is able to flip him in the final hour and we hire someone who isn't going to make stech81 watch basketball, I'm going to vomit - and then mail it to MBob.

In speaking with him and his family in the Ga, Dome a few years back...discovered he wanted to coach here in Midtown-Atlanta. We chose a guy coaching in that same state, who couldn't even dress as nice...

Who do you like Pat Kelsey or Jay Larranaga? A couple of Winthrop coaches too late.

In this national election year, I vote for Stech81. We can watch practice, get drunk, then watch the game. One out of three should be worth not remembering to forget the other two.

Vandy is a good basketball school playing in an easy conference. If this goes down, it will present very interesting new reality and a difficult decision for the Jackets. Would it then be more attractive to coach at a good school with a lot of upside in an easier conference, or a good school with somewhat less upside in a harder conference?

What's worse is that it's now public that Drew was MBob's top choice and he couldn't get him. Apparently couldn't get his 2nd choice in Jeff Capel either.

Scott Cherry, High Point(check out what he has done there)...played for Dean Smith and coached under Big Jim Larranaga at Geo. Mason.

Still young, high energy, A C C type!

I say we go the other way this time . Lets look for a coach who hasn't done well in the past. Someone like Joseph Price he was 5-32 at Grambling in 2 years. Now he should know what not to do.

Thanks, I missed that one concerning Drexel. At least he took a step up. Name our last head coach who got a "promotion" to a "higher ceiling program".

Exactly, cricket city!

What we may be seeing here is a distinct turn by the top coaches to consider better programs in easier conferences and top mid-major programs as more enticing jobs than the mid-level programs in top conferences.

Any coach who's been paying attention knows what has happened in the ACC the past 3 years. We skimmed off the top of the old BE and added it to the already tough ACC. We were 8-10 in conference regular season this year (one game below .500) and finished 11th. Stop and consider that. With UNC (who can now seemingly get away with anything), Dook, Syracuse, Louisville, UVA, Miami, Pitt and Notre Dame all in the conference, where does the .500 team fit in? Answer: 8th or below. Who wants to bang their head against that every year when you can go to Vandy in a P5 conference and play their schedule?

I think we've got a tough road ahead. At this point, I'd like to just get a young coach who can recruit like crazy, and who's not going to be a candidate for Vandy or Stanford.

Very interesting that GT can't entice these coaches to make the leap with all the built in advantages Atlanta has..

LOL!

A few thoughts...

  • Amaker has signed 3 top 100 players which is very impressive. 2 are from the Atlanta area, IIRC.
  • What's happening now is what I was afraid of and that is the rejections playing out in public. Makes Tech look even worse than we are. I guess it is impossible to keep a firm tight lid on all of the speculation and info these days.
  • I want to publicly say thank you to Vandy.
  • If we are down to option # 4 or 5, then I hope the financial package offering is commensurate with who we down to. IOW, if we were going to dish out $1.8-2.2M to a Capel or Drew, then let's go cheap on some of the names that are being hypothesized now. In fact, I'll take the job for 622 bucks and will pay stech81 $33.98 (a couple of cases of Bud Light) to be my top - and only - assistant. He's retired now and has plenty of time on his hands. Keeping all of his wives happy and building statues can take a break during the winter.
  • Btw, if we are going really cheap - and this will NEVER happen I realize - I wish Bobinski would give Tom Herrion a 2-year contract and give him a shot at it. Maybe 3 years. Get us through paying off Blewitt.
  • Bobinski remains very unimpressive.

Random observation...

...I did not realize until now that Cheaters assistant coach, Hubert Davis, turns 46 years old next month. Was thinking he is in his 30's. Wow!

Also, just realized this is his 4th season as an assistant at UNC. He is head coach of the Cheaters' JV team (or was). Considering Tech reminds one of a JV team, perhaps he is a natural fit.

Funny you mention CTH. Today, I was privately happy Drew went to Vandy(although all the chatter had me resigned to finding the good in the supposed hire), but thinking could we talk Craig Neal into leaving New Mexico. We know what he said already. Make it really attractive. Appealing to his coaching genes. Tell him he can bring Stan or retain/rehire CTH. Still has room for a recruiter or two on the staff. Speak to the appeal of bringing back the time when he played here. When the games mattered.

Not the worst concept in the world. Fans, friends, graduates of Tech might possibly get excited.

I am a little disappointed as I thought Drew would bring some energy to the program. After he chose the program with the better returning roster over the one with a higher upside I thank Vanderbilt also.

Doesn't say much for the Athletic Director running the search does it?

Just get on our collective knees and beg Bobby Cremins to come out of retirement and run the program for the next 3 years until Blewitt and Gregory (and Bobinski) are off the books...get a new AD in town - a real one this time please - and have him lay some legit money out there, sell Tech, and energize the fanbase.

Unfortunately, we will soon be advised of a very unimpressive hire I am afraid. I guess he could still surprise us, but not counting on it.
