Beesball...postseason thread

Joel Erdmann, D1 Chairman, admitted the last 15 games play into consideration of each team.
Tech is 6-9. If they were to eliminate the pool play in postseason, then we are 9-6. Jackets were 9-9 in the last 18, against a difficult strength of schedule.

Edit: D1 Baseball.com has us in as a #3 seed.

I hope so. Last year, we had no real beef, IMO. This year, I think this team has done more than enough to stake its claim to an at-large bid.

Silent Bob is on the committee. Hopefully, he speaks up when needed.
Arguably we are in the best conference, or right there with our Southeastern neighbors. The record is nothing to be ashamed of, particularly against the top 50 rpi.

Road to Omaha, 7 p.m.(same "bat" channel, same "bat" station, that's the "pitch").

One prediction prior to the ACC Tourney had us as a 2 seed in Nashville/Vandy....
SB Nation from earlier today, is somewhat similar...

1

Last Four In: Oregon State, Gonzaga, Washington, Oklahoma State
First Four Out: UNC, Minnesota, Houston, Alabama

Binghamton was spelled incorrectly, by them, not me.
IMHO, we don't go from a potential host, to totally out because we lost to Miami, F$U, NCSt.

Florida was the number one over all seed with 47 wins, but lost five of last ten games. Louisville was second, Miami third,

Tech in as a 2 seed playing UConn in the Florida Regional in Gainesville.

Friday at I p.m.(ESPN 3), Ga. Tech 36-23 vs. Connecticut 37-23.
Fla. plays at 6 p.m.(SEC Network). Bethune-Cookman is the opponent and #4 seed.

Escape this regional....potential matchup would be FSU in Tally for the super regional.

10 ACC schools in, record 6 are hosting, including NC St. with 35 wins.

I still say roll the dice with Parr or whoever and save Gold for Game 2 but can't fault any decision really considering we just have significant deficiencies in starting pitching.

Congrats to the team for getting back to the NCAAT.

Must pitch Gold to get past AAC champion and avoid digging a hole in the losers bracket.
Parr might be able to neutralize the Florida lefty hitters. Would love to avoid using Gorst in the first two, because a three game weekend would beee fabulous!

Agree to disagree, mate. We stand zero chance against Florida in Game 2 unless Gold is on the mound. Significant - no make that HUUUUUUGE - difference in UConn and Florida (on their home field).

If Gold starts Game 1, IMO we are toast as far as the bigger objective - winning the regional. But, like I said before, it isn't like Danny has a ton of options unfortunately. Kind of remarkable that this team was able to secure a 2-seed at the NCAAT considering "the season that could have been" had we not lost King and Hughes before April arrived.

Regardless, I think we can agree that the bats need to ring and make it easier on a vulnerable pitching staff (and poor defense).

We agree on the bats and the defense. My theory is no way we beat UF twice on their home field, home crowd, from the losers bracket. It might be a moot point because Hall and Howell have started Gold first in every series opener, play-in game, this season.

Parr might rise up against the Gators.

In all likelihood we will have to defeat them twice, unless one of the other two does some dirty work. We need more than Gold on the mound.

Gainesville fishwrapper reporting (already) that UF HC O'Sullivan will be the top candidate for Tejas' now open HC'ing position. Good. Hope that rumor festers all week. Any uncertainty is welcome.

Entire Gainesville regional schedule (weather permitting of course)...

2016 NCAA Gainesville Regional Schedule
Friday, June 3
Game 1: 1 p.m. - No. 3 UConn vs. No. 2 Georgia Tech (ESPN3)
Game 2: 6 p.m. - No. 4 Bethune-Cookman vs. No. 1 FLORIDA (SEC Network)

Saturday, June 4
Game 3: 12 p.m. - Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2 (ESPN3)
Game 4: 6 p.m. - Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2 (ESPN3)

Sunday, June 5
Game 5: 12 p.m. - Winner Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4 (ESPN3)
Game 6: 6 p.m. - Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5 (ESPN3)

Monday, June 6
Game 7: (if necessary) – 6 p.m. - Winner Game 6 vs. Loser Game 6 (ESPN3)

Our best shot to win the regional is to get to Game 6 undefeated. IOW, go 2-0 in the first 2 days. The best shot of that happening IMO is rolling the dice against the Huskies on Day 1 and then run our best (by far, not even close) starter out against the Gators in Game 4.

If we go 1-1 regardless of how it happens (win Game 1, lose Game 4 or lose Game 1 and win Game 3) we are in Game 5 and Gold is done most likely. If we throw Gold in Game 1 and win, I give us near zero chance of beating the Gators on their home field in Game 4 with anybody else we might run out there. If we throw somebody else in Game 1 against the Huskies, we have a much better chance of winning that game than somebody other than Gold on Day 2.

If we throw Gold in Game 1, hopefully we win. We'll likely be in Game 5 on Sunday having to win 3 straight to win the regional. If we throw Gold in Game 1 and lose to the Huskies, we still can get to Game 5 with a win on Saturday against an opponent we should beat. If we throw somebody other than Gold in Game 1, I still like our chances of being in Game 5 (same scenario as above), but significantly like our chances far better of getting to Game 6 unbeaten and having to be beaten twice by some team using their 4th and 5th starters with Gold being saved for Saturday.

A quick look at UConn...

  • RPI = 51
  • Record vs RPI top 50 teams = 4-9
  • Went 4-1 to win the AAC tournament and auto bid (otherwise, likely misses the NCAAT)...2 of the 4 wins were over Memphis (RPI = 207), 1 win over South Florida (RPI = 169) and title game win over Houston (RPI = 58)...lone loss was to Memphis (RPI = 207)
  • Won 13 of last 14 games
  • 1-0 vs ACC this season...won a midweek game at BC (NCAAT team) back in late March
  • Went 1-5 vs ECU and 1-1 vs Tulane (other AAC NCAAT teams)

Tech is the only team from the state of GA in the NCAAT this year. Mercer was the only one a year ago.

Previous to that, have to go back to 2012 when Tech pulled off a miracle run to win the ACCT and qualify. Without that, there would have been no teams from the state of GA in the NCAAT that year.

Last time the Cesspool appeared in the NCAAT was 5 years ago in 2011.

Weather forecast for Friday at 1pm in Gainesville... Sunny, 91 degrees, high pressure in place, 15% chance of rain.

This just in from the You Never Know Department...

...2015 National Champion, Virginia, was a 3-seed in last year's NCAAT Regional.

Just sayin'.

SMOKING HOOKAH

Junior Anthony Kay, a likely top-50 pick in the upcoming MLB draft, won two starts, including the final on three day's rest and was the tournament MVP. Penders said Kay will not pitch Friday, but will take a full week's rest and prepare to start later in the regional.

Freshman Tim Cate (4-1, 2.71) from Cheney Tech-Manchester, the AAC rookie pitcher of the year, and sophomore Wills Montgomery (6-3, 2.57) are the options to start Game 1.

The experts seem to believe Fla. vs. FSU is a given. We would rather see an ACC matchup in the Super Regional!

I think it is the wrong strategy, but like I said before he doesn't have a ton of options. If we win Friday - and with Gold on the mound, I feel optimistic - then Saturday versus the Gators is going to be really ugly most likely. And, when I say ugly, I mean butt pitiful ugly.

As in, handing the Gators the regional victory on an orange and blue platter. But, we'll see. I hope I'm very wrong. Let's just hope like hell we win Friday.

Some notes on UConn...

  • Their lineup normally features 4 lefty bats and 5 righties
  • Leadoff guy is CF Sr., Jack Sunberg, who bats lefty and has a .270 batting pct.
  • The 2-hole is 3B Soph., Willy Yahn, who bats righty and leads the team in batting pct. at .319
  • The 3-hole hitter is 1B Sr., Bobby Melley, who bats lefty and has a .312 batting pct. and is 2nd on the team in dingers with 10
  • Cleanup features another Sr., in RF Joe DeRoche-Duffin who has a .266 batting pct. but has hit a whopping 17 homers this season...he bats from the right side
  • The 5-hole hitter is another lefty in SS Sr., Bryan Daniello, who is .291 on the season at the plate.
  • So, 4 of the top 5 guys in the lineup are seniors. Don't see that in the collegiate game very often. That is, so many 4-year guys.
  • John Toppa, a freshman LF, batting from the right side is the 6-hole guy and is batting .313 on the season. The lineup alters left then righty then lefty throughout intelligently.
  • The 7-hole hitter is another lefty in freshman C Zac Susi, who throws righty.
  • Anthony Kay is their stud lefty starter.
  • Their #2 is William Montgomerie, a righty who sports a strong 2.57 ERA.
  • Their #3 is a lefty in Tim Cate, with a sub-3.00 ERA also at 2.71.
  • Their closer is a righty in Patrick Ruotolo who has 11 saves and a 1.73 ERA.
  • With Tech only having 1 lefty batter (Keenan Innis), I won't be surprised to see UConn's HC go with RHP Montgomerie. This would also support buzzforlife's message yesterday that UConn may save their #1 in LHP Anthony Kay, which makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks for the detailed write up and review.
Now, I'm really afraid. Will try to find a "Gold" coin to rub on for luck.
Brandon for President!

The JJ's need the bats to get going. We scored 6 runs over 30 innings of pool play at the ACCT. Of those 30 innings, only 2 saw us score. That's 28 innings of 30 with diddly.

This team gets a lot of press about its offensive (npi) prowess. Haven't seen much of it lately. The most runs Tech has put up in our last 11 games is 6. Over that span of 11 games, we are averaging 4.1 runs per game. We'll need much better than that to make any noise at Gainesville most likely.

All-time records versus teams in the regional...

vs Bethune-Cookman: never faced one another

vs Connecticut: Tech is 6-1

vs Florida: Tech is 33-59-1...only played 3 times since 1965 though (all 3 were UF wins...these include 2 wins at the Gainesville Regional in 2012)

Mike Morgan and Carlos Pena will have the commentator duties at the Gainesville Regional for ESPN... http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-r...n-baseball-regional-matchup-beginning-friday/

Hartford Courant: "Tim Cate, With That Lively Curveball, Gets Call For UConn In Tourney Opener"... http://www.courant.com/sports/hc-uconn-baseball-cate-0603-20160531-story.html

"I have two curves," Cate said, "a get-me-over curve, which I like to throw for strikes; that one might be a 75-76 mph curve for a strike to get them thinking. With two strikes, when I really want to get them to swing and miss, I'll throw a harder one in there, 78-80 and it usually goes in the dirt."

The team better not be swinging at any 2 strike curve balls.

We will run 9 right-handed hitters to the plate against a lefty curveballer. Should be fun to watch.

An intangible to watch tomorrow...

...the weather. Calling for temps in the low-to-mid 90's with heat indices over 100. You'd like to think the Good Guys are far more acclimated to the hot & humid conditions over the New Englanders. We'll see...

What about that "get me over, 75 mph curve"?
Anything close with 2 strikes, made me aggressive. If you want to tick your manager or coaches off, take a two strike pitch with the bat on your shoulder. Not that you swing at a ball in the dirt. My grandfather played pro. ball, he would throw me a palm/fork ball that dropped a foot and a half(he wasn't even a pitcher)...it was considered a breaking ball, just like a curve...you could turn it in to break which ever way you want. Pitchers with good curves like Cate are tough to hit, and that is probably why he is the AAC Freshman of the Year twirler.

10 ACC openers Friday...(all on ESPN-3)

1pm
Connecticut vs Ga Tech - at Gainesville, FL
Bill & His Old Lady at Virginia
Duke vs UNC-Wilmington - at Columbia, SC

4pm
Wake Forest vs Minnesota - at College Station, TX
Boston College vs Tulane - at Oxford, MS

6pm
Alabama State at Florida State
Western Michigan at Louisville

7pm
Western Carolina at Clemson
Stetson at Miami
Navy at NC State

*The NCAAT Committee provided a lot of respect to the ACC. Now, the ACC needs to come through and show that the respect was warranted (I'm looking straight at you/us, Yellow Jackets!!)

*The 6 hosts are in good position to win, though Navy will be throwing a very good pitcher at the Pack...and, watch out, Tigers!...WCU is a dangerous club

*Winning 8 of 10 openers would be good...more than that very good...less than 8 puts question marks in heads that the ACC was overvalued...6 or less wins tomorrow and the ACC has egg on the face

*While I don't have Vegas odds to point to, I figure the biggest ACC underdog tomorrow is Boston College...more because Tulane is a very good team and playing not too far away from home
