OT: Harrison Butker Commencement Speech

Perception of Georgia Tech football

So I’m at a wedding this weekend in St Simons. While checking the score to the baseball game at dinner last night guy sitting next to me saw and started telling me he’s a Maryland alum and when they were still in the ACC he would buy season tickets at tech to see Maryland play when they came to Atlanta and then made the comment of it being an automatic win and I had to correct him that that was false and we’re like 15-6 against Maryland then he went on to say blah blah blah we’d beat them now. Hopefully soon we will be back and have people forgetting about the mistake we made with Collins

BASEBALL Burress Highlights Tech’s All-ACC Baseball Honors

Drew Burress named ACC Freshman of the Year; Tech earns three All-ACC spots

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Georgia Tech outfielder Drew Burress was named the 2024 ACC Freshman of the Year, as a total of three Yellow Jackets earned ACC honors, the conference office announced on Monday.

On top of the individual award honors, Burress also earned a spot on the all-ACC first team and all-freshman team. Joining Burress was Payton Green and Matthew Ellis, who were named to the ACC’s second team all-conference.

The all-conference teams and end of the year awards are voted on by the league head coaches.

Burress, a native of Houston County, leads Georgia Tech into this week’s ACC Baseball Championship as one of the top freshmen nationally, hitting a team-best .379 with 14 doubles, two triples and 22 home runs for 62 RBI. With an OPS of 1.311, he’s slugging .803 with an on-base percentage of .508, having drawn more walks (51) than strikeouts (33). He also has eight stolen bases and has nine assists from center field – tying the program record for most single-season assists by an outfielder.

Burress currently leads all Division I freshmen in six statistical categories (home runs, home runs per game, slugging, total bases, walks, and walks per game), while ranking Top 3 nationally in 11 categories. Then at the conference level, he leads ACC freshmen in eight categories (runs and on-base percentage) while also ranking second in RBI, RBI/game and batting average.

Leading Georgia Tech in average, home runs and RBI, the Houston County native has a chance at becoming the 12th Yellow Jacket to win Georgia Tech’s triple crown. Burress would be the first to accomplish the feat since Matt Gonzalez in 2016. Burress is also just eight RBI away from breaking Matt Wieters’ freshman RBI record of 69, set in 2005.

Burress is the sixth Yellow Jacket to earn the league’s Freshmen/Rookie of the Year honor, joining the illustrious group of Wieters (2005), Micah Owings (2003), Mark Teixeira (1999), Nomar Garciaparra (1992) and Jason Varitek (1991).

Green earns his first all-ACC honor in his first year with Georgia Tech, ranking third on the team with a .326 batting average, recording 59 hits, 14 doubles, two triples and 12 home runs for 42 RBI. He’s reached base at a .417 clip and is a perfect 6-for-6 on the base paths. The Cary, N.C., native has been terrific for the Yellow Jackets down the stretch, hitting .333 over his last 10 games of the regular season with 12 hits, two doubles and four home runs for 10 RBI.

Ellis also earns his first all-ACC honor, working as both catcher and a designated hitter for Tech this season. Ellis has been one of the hottest hitters in the league over the last two months of the season to push his average to .316 overall with 61 hits, 11 doubles and 16 home runs. Ellis caught fire as Tech made their run in the month of April, hitting a blistering .403 with 25 hits, five doubles and eight home runs for a gaudy 30 RBI for the month.

The Yellow Jackets have the ACC Player of the Year and the nation’s No. 5-ranked player in senior Christo Lamprecht (George, South Africa), as well as two other players with NCAA Championship experience in senior Bartley Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) and sophomore Hiroshi Tai (Singapore).

Thirty teams and six individuals will compete at the finals, which consists of three days of stroke play on Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26 (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 27 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 28, followed by finals on Wednesday, May 29.

The 2023 NCAA Championship was held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., with Florida winning the team title, defeating Georgia Tech 3-1 in the final round of match play competition. Florida’s Fred Biondi won the individual title.

With one of the 10 hardest schedules in college football by any metric or as measured by anyone covering the sport seriously, Georgia Tech football has a tough road ahead if Brent Key wants to up his win total again in 2024 after starting off at 4-4 as an interim and going 7-6 in year two. We've written a lot about the defensive side of the ball, but the area where Key's team on paper should be better and starting from a solid place is the offense.

Entering year two under offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, the Jackets return their starting quarterback (Haynes King), QB2 (Zach Pyron), starting running back Jamal Haynes, the top two slot receivers (Malik Rutherford and Christian Leary), the top WR (Eric Singleton), and four of the five starters on the offensive line. At receiver, they have back the two guys that the staff thought expected to start on the outside last year, Chase Lane and Leo Blackburn both back from significant injuries, and Tech has added some veteran tight ends to replace Dylan Leonard and supplement red zone specialists Brett Seither.

Called today and heard "you're expected wait time is less than 2 minutes"
Waited about 5 minutes and opted for the automated call-back......which never came.

Tried an hour later...."you're expected wait time is less than 2 minutes"
Waited about 5 minutes and opted for the automated call-back......which never came.

Called back and pressed "2" for "I want to buy new tickets" (thinking maybe they let us season ticket holders wait longer)
"you're expected wait time is less than 2 minutes"
Waited less than 90 secs and was disconnected.

Called on way home
"you're expected wait time is less than 2 minutes"
A few minutes before 5pm.....automated message saying they close at 5pm "if you'd like us to call you back leave a message.......and Go Jackets!!"

This was after I called my personal rep starting Friday and it went straight to VM - left a message.....no call back. (who knows if he's even there any more, but his VM is still on)

That's not why the stadium isn't full........but it doesn't help. Pathetic.

I've got 6 season tickets and a make a decent monthly donation to the Tech Way. My credit card changed and The Tech Way hasn't even emailed to ask why the last payment failed. Old cc is due to be charged another season tix payment tomorrow.

It is time to raid Miami.

Former Sandy Creek LB and priority GT target Marcellius Pulliam has entered the transfer portal this morning.

Was previously at Miami.
@Russell Johnson are you saying that he was any priority out of high school or a current priority?

Sticking with Miami, now that former Miami S Savion Riley is officially in the portal, consider this my JOL Projection for him to head home to Atlanta to play for Cory Peoples, Brent Key, and GT.
