FOOTBALL RECRUITING Some National Buzz on Recruiting

"Considered among the supposed sleeping giants of the NIL era, Georgia Tech is on pace to ink a historic signing class under third-year coach Brent Key.

The Yellow Jackets landed their biggest recruit yet in 2025 with a commitment from Roswell, Georgia, offensive tackle Josh Petty on Aug. 12. At No. 27 in the ESPN 300, Petty is the program's highest-ranked commit in the ESPN rankings era (dating to 2006).

Petty's pledge follows summer commitments from fellow in-state ESPN 300 prospects in four-star cornerback Dalen Penson (No. 171) and offensive tackle Damola Ajidahun (No. 180). With a spring pledge from in-state offensive guard Justin Hasenhuetl (No. 220 in the ESPN 300), Georgia Tech is up to four ESPN 300 pledges in 2025, more than any previous recruiting cycle in program history.

Altogether, the Yellow Jackets have added 18 commitments since June 1, including 13 from within the state, reinforcing at safety with commitments from in-state defensive backs Rasean Dinkins (No. 42 safety in 2024), Fenix Felton (No. 44 safety) and Jayden Barr (No. 98 safety).

What they're saying: Georgia Tech is still building under Key. But after turning in the program's best finish since 2018 last fall and amid major victories on the recruiting trail, expectations are rising for the Yellow Jackets, who rank 26th in ESPN's team rankings. Georgia Tech will be in the mix for four-star, in-state defensive tackle Christian Garrett (No. 135 in the ESPN 300), a recent Georgia decommit.

"Georgia Tech is one of those programs where we've all said, 'God forbid they ever get it together, there's nothing that will stop them,'" a scout from a program that competes with Georgia Tech in recruiting said. "Kids love the thought of playing in Atlanta. It's a great school with a good conference. Obviously, the state runs red in terms of the Bulldogs, but there's plenty of talent for them to go get there."

FOOTBALL RECRUITING What to watch for at the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic this week

Wanted to give you guys a little guide for the teams and players to look out for over the next few days.

FOOTBALL WAR ROOM: Predicting the depth chart and recruiting nuggets 8/14

As promised this is my depth chart prediction WAR ROOM and I've thrown in some recruiting intel as well.

A note on the projected depth chart. This is 100% my take based on sources and if someone is injured unless that injury is public like Jackson Long or DJ Moore they will be on my depth chart for now. I'm not going to put stuff up that could give intel for FSU on the injury front before Tech plays them in the opener. If they opened with Bethune-Cookman it would be a very different story. The team was still in camp the last time I was there and they won't start FSU prep until Friday in practice.

QUARTERBACKS

Haynes King
Zach Pyron
Aaron Philo
Brody Rhodes
Graham Knowles

This is pretty easy Haynes King is the starting QB, Zach Pyron is the backup and if they had to play a third QB it would probably be Aaron Philo. King and Pyron are just way ahead of the younger guys and that is just how it is. Philo is very talented and hopes to push his way up, but the reality is both King and Pyron have more experience and are better prepared right now to win games. Both King and Pyron did lots of work with QB trainers in the offseason to prepare for the 2024 season and you can see growth with both on various types of throws. Pyron's arm strength growth the last two years has been very impressive to watch as that was probably the biggest knock on him coming out of HS. King has always had a big arm but his big key this season will be his ability to read his progressions and not force balls into coverage. Predetermining his throws last season off pre-snap looks led to a huge chunk of his interceptions. This is a very deep room and all three of the backup QBs would've been better options than some of the QBs GC3 trotted out aside from healthy Jeff Sims.

RUNNING BACK

Jamal Haynes
this one is interesting I think it is open Trey Cooley or Evan Dickens or Anthony Carrie
Chad Alexander
Daylon Gordon
Trelain Maddox (not cleared yet for full contact coming off his knee injury)

Jamal Haynes is the guy the question is who is #2, that part I'm unclear on. Key was very high on Anthony Carrie and Chad Alexander coming out of the scrimmage. Evan Dickens is very steady and you get solid work there, but what is his ceiling like? Cooley looks great in non-contact, but he struggled with his footwork and staying upright and has had fumbling issues in the past, but he has some home run threat to him. Carrie and Maddox are the future at this spot and when both are healthy and up to speed that will give GT some good size and speed at the RB position behind Haynes, but can Carrie pass pro well enough to play right now? We will find out soon enough. Maddox is a real X-factor here when he gets cleared maybe in October. Having Maddox and Carrie behind Haynes would be special.

RECEIVERS

So there is a lot of crosstraining in this group

X receiver Z Receiver SLOT
Chase Lane Eric Singleton Jr. Malik Rutherford
Leo Blackburn Abdul Janneh Christian Leary or
Abdul Janneh or Christian Leary Bailey Stockton
Avery Boyd Zion Taylor Zion Taylor
Zion Taylor Isiah Canion
Isiah Canion Trey Horne

Really I think the top three are pretty set with Singleton, Rutherford and Lane with Leo Blackburn and Abdul Janneh being the next two guys up and Christian Leary in there as well. What can guys like Bailey Stockton (who would've played last year had he not injured his hand before camp) and Zion Taylor do? That is the bigger question. I think we will see Avery Boyd more at the TE spot. They have some cool walk-ons like Nick Bliss, Chris Elko and Trent Davis who aren't bad either.

Tight Ends/H-back

Tight End (Y) H-back (H/F)
Jackson Hawes Brett Seither
Brett Seither Avery Boyd
Josh Beetham or Ryland Goede or
Ryland Goede Josh Beetham or
Luke Harping Luke Harpring
David Prince David Prince

So Jackson Hawes is really freaking good and a prototype beast at TE, folks should be excited to see him in action. Brett Seither was great in the red zone last year. Avery Boyd is coming off a spring knee injury so it will be interesting to see what his role is like this fall. When he is healthy he can be a dynamic weapon at WR or H-back. Josh Beetham had a great camp. Goede is solid when he is healthy and able to go full speed. He has battled some injury issues during his career elsewhere. The real freaky guy here aside from Hawes is Luke Harpring. He has his dad's athleticism and has tremendous hands. He is still learning the offense and how stuff works, but once he has a full grasp of the offense I think he will be a real asset here and there is a reason why they didn't want him playing defensive end.

LEFT TACKLELEFT GUARDCENTERRIGHT GUARDRIGHT TACKLE
Corey RobinsonJoe FusileWeston FranklinKeylan RutledgeJordan Williams
Jordan Brown or Jameson RiggsBrandon Best or Jordan BrownHarrison Moore or Tana Alo-TupuolaBenjamin Galloway or Ethan MackennyEthan Mackenny or Patrick Screws Jr.
Kai GreerHarrison MooreBrandon BestPatrick Screws Jr.Jordan Floyd

I expect this will be the bowl lineup with Keylan Rutledge subbed for the departed Connor Scaglione. The real interesting guy in all of the offseason with the ascension of Jordan Brown who was 3rd team playing some guard and tackle in the spring. Things just clicked for him over the summer, he got healthy for the first time since he arrived and GT and he had a huge summer and strong fall camp to the point where he was able to get one reps when Corey Robinson was banged up as Geep Wade spoke about during his media avail. Jameson Riggs is no slouch but Brown has pushed him. The Brown thing is something interesting to watch as the roster size goes up. That is a guy who many times leaves or a team kind of gives up on and with OL and sometimes DL that light can come on later and they didn't process him and gave him more time and it clicked.

They seem to be setting up Mackenny to basically replace Jordan Williams on the right side of the line. Mackenny keeps growing as well which is why he is playing some guard now. I'm not sure where things stand with the backup center thing, but they love Harrison Moore and Tana was great in the spring. Moore is sort of a Swiss Army Knife, I'm fairly certain he has played 4 of the 5 OL spots since arriving in January, maybe he hasn't taken reps at LT, but everywhere else he has had a go.

This should be one of the better OL's GT has had in a long time on paper

One week until the Jackets kick off the 2024 season...

Kelly is on a plane headed for Europe, and I'm about to head down to the Benz to catch the final few games of the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic.

But we will have plenty of team and recruiting coverage this coming week leading up to kickoff in Dublin. I'm beyond excited and thankful to get this first season of covering the team started. Should be a fun one.

OT: Schedule Thoughts

It’s been talked about ad nauseam about how brutal this schedule is, but am I the only one who thinks this is being overblown? I think it’s entirely possible we look back on it after the season is over and the schedule isn’t nearly as tough as it looks now.

Outside of Georgia and possibly Notre Dame, I think we have a legitimate chance to run the table. Out of the transfers quarterbacks, the only guy who scares me is Cam Ward. Shough doesn’t scare me and despite how excellent McCall has been, he’s playing with the big boys now. Louisville and NC State’s success will be determined by the quarterback play, and I’m not confident they get it done. Of course DJU is overrated as hell. McCord is solid, but Syracuse doesn’t have the talent. Duke may go 3-9.

We get FSU at the perfect time and Miami at home. We’ll see how good VPI actually is, but I’m not buying it.

I’ve got the Jackets going undefeated at home and losing to UGA, ND. Despite my thoughts on Louisville and Tyler Shough, it’s on the road in a tough environment. I’ve got that as a loss as well, but it’s a coin flip for me.

9-3 (7-1)

Worst case scenario we lose to FSU, VPI on the road and Miami at home and finish 6-6 (4-4)

Random thoughts: The topic of weddings in the Fall...

I know some folks like Barstool and some don't care for it as much, but I saw this on there late last night. I've always been a person with this opinion about folks getting married on a college football Saturday.

What say you?

I've been saying this for years and people laughed. There is a whole other half of the year. Don't take those precious few college football Saturdays away from us.

Volleyball Signs Lara Martinez Casas

Tech completes 2024 roster with the addition of Argentinian right side

THE FLATS – Head coach Michelle Collier has finalized the 2024 roster with the signing of Lara Martinez Casas (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Casas comes to The Flats from Argentina, where she most recently played with Ferro Carril Oeste, in the top flight of Argentinian volleyball.

Lara Martìnez Casas | Freshman | Right Side | 6-3 | Buenos Aires, Argentina | Escuela Argentina del Oeste

Martinez Casas joins the Georgia Tech volleyball program as one of the most exciting volleyball prospects in Argentina. The Buenos Aires native has been steadily rising up the ranks of the Argentina national team program over the last few years, earning a spot on the U18 national team as a 15-year-old, back in 2022. In the spring, she made her Liga A1 debut, the top-flight of Argentinian volleyball, playing for local club, Ferro Carril Oeste, where she helped lead the team to a semifinal finish in the Buenos Aires metro championships.

The 2024 signing class is now complete, with six members: senior transfer setter Luanna Emiliano, junior college transfer DS/L Sofia Velezand three freshmen: MB/RS Mira McCool, DS/L Lydia Zeng and MB Logan Wiley.

With this signing, Georgia Tech now boasts seven athletes from outside the United States, tied with Wisconsin for the most international roster among Power 4 programs. The Yellow Jackets have representatives from five countries on the roster: 11 Americans, 3 Brazilians (Emiliano, Mendes and Soares), 2 Argentinians (Bertolino and Martinez Casas) 1 New Zealander (Otene) and 1 Columbian (Velez).

Single Game Tix on ramblinwreck.com

Has anyone had any issues purchasing tickets directly though the GTAA on the Tech website? Maybe I’m just an idiot but it continues to tell me my billing address is incorrect, cannot complete my purchase, etc. And it’s worthless to try to complete an order on the iPhone as it won’t even go to a cart after you attempt to add them. Just curious if anyone has had issues.

Locked on Georgia Tech

Anyone know why Georgia Tech just doesn’t have a host for this? Last episode was a March Madness episode from like 2 years ago. I follow a couple of other teams closely and they have podcasts out literally every single day. I listen to a lot of podcasts driving to and from work and at work and try to listen to as much GT stuff as possible. A lot of it is hard to listen too but it would be nice if GT had someone do just a 10 minute episode everyday. Rant over. Go Jackets!

FOOTBALL Season Preview from Saturday Road

Interesting preview here from Brett Friedlander. He’s a bit of a grouch but he’s an ACC guy through and through, and I think he’s originally from Atlanta. He’s got game-by-game predictions in here, but it looks like there’s a typo where one W and one L get transposed. Anyway, nothing really earth-shattering and nothing we don’t know, but it’s always interesting to get opinions from folks outside the primary Tech orbit.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Tech hosts a successful cookout

Here are some updates and I'll keep them coming as more news breaks.

Headlining the festivities was top OL target Josh Petty from Fellowship Christian. He had a great visit that went very well. GT was able to get a final pitch in for him ahead of his decision on August 12th. The Jackets and FSU are locked in a tight race to land the talented OL. FSU in the meantime had a USF commit visit there today who is also an OT ironically from Riverwood HS Sean Poret who camped at GT but wasn't an offer guy for them. I found it interesting that they brought a kid down from Atlanta to Tally for their big recruiting weekend.

Speaking of Fellowship Christian, GT offered their QB/ATH Jonathan Granby today. It was his first offer.

Georgia Tech offered several guys on my watch list for the event, ATH Brayden Rouse from Kell HS, Buford HS OL Graham Houston, Walton HS TE Jude Cascone, and Walton HS LB Noah LaVallee both from the 2026 class. Enworth (Tenn) DB Justin Hopkins also landed an offer from GT.

There was even a new 2027 offer to Hampton HS DB Kamarui Dorsey.

Euro 2024 & Copa America 2024 thread

Germany wins the opener easily today with their 5-1 win on big FOX. Amazing that more people from the United States have bought tickets to the Euro’s than any country in the world including Germany.

Copa America does not start until Thursday June 20 at our own Mercedes-Benz Stadium (FS1 for tv) where Argentina will play Canada.
