Head coach Josh Pastner welcomes back eight letterwinners from last year’s unit, including senior point guard Kyle Sturdivant (Norcross, Ga.) and senior center Rodney Howard (Ypsilanti, Mich.) who are Tech’s top two returning scorers. The Jackets’ core includes a trio of rising sophomores in Dallan “Deebo” Coleman (Memphis, Tenn.), Miles Kelly (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Jalon Moore (Birmingham, Ala.), as well as junior point guard Deivon Smith (Loganville, Ga.). The Jackets also have added a pair of promising transfers in guard Lance Terry (College Park, Ga.) from Gardner-Webb and forward Ja’von Franklin (Little Rock, Ark.) from South Alabama, both of whom earned all-conference recognition last season.

FOOTBALL Demaryius Thomas Represents Tech in 2022 ACC Honors Class

Yellow Jackets legend to be celebrated posthumously at ACC title game

THE FLATS – Legendary wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, a two-time National Football League All-Pro whose 2,135 receiving yards in three collegiate seasons rank sixth in Georgia Tech football history, represents Tech in the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Football Honors Class, the ACC announced on Wednesday. Thomas and representatives from the conference’s 13 other football institutions will be celebrated during festivities surrounding the Subway ACC Football Championship Game on Dec. 2-3 in Charlotte, N.C.

After redshirting as a true freshman out of Dexter, Ga. in 2006, Thomas played three seasons at Georgia Tech (2007-09). He officially recorded 113 receptions (10th in school history) for 2,135 yards (sixth) and 13 touchdowns (t-seventh) in his three campaigns as a Yellow Jacket, and his whopping 25.1 yards per reception as a junior in 2009 remains the second-highest single-season receiving average in Tech’s all-time annals. After helping lead Tech to consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division championships in 2008 and 2009 and earning All-America (third team) and all-ACC (first team) recognition in ‘09, he declared for the 2010 NFL Draft.

Thomas became only the 12th first-round draft pick in Georgia Tech history when the Denver Broncos selected him with the 22nd overall pick in the 2010 Draft. He went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL, highlighted by eight-and-a-half campaigns with the Broncos. He caught 724 passes for 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns as a pro, including 665 receptions for 9,055 yards and 60 touchdowns in 125 games with the Broncos (figures that rank third, second and second in team history, respectively). He owns 16 Broncos franchise records, including single-season receiving yards (1,619 – 2014) and career 100-yard receiving games (33). He earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2013 and 2014 and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection (2012-14, 2016).

As a pro, he is perhaps best remembered for being one of the most prolific postseason performers in the Broncos’ illustrious history. Making his NFL playoff debut in the divisional round of the 2011 playoffs versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, he caught four passes for a Denver postseason-record 204 yards, including the game-winning 80-yard touchdown reception on the first play of overtime that lifted the Broncos to a legendary 29-23 win. Two seasons later (2013), he made his first of two Super Bowl appearances with the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII and set a then-Super Bowl record with 13 receptions in Denver’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Two more seasons later (2015), he won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos (a 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers). After his eight-and-a-half seasons with the Broncos, he closed his NFL career with the Houston Texans (2018) and New York Jets (2019). He officially announced his retirement in June 2021.

Affectionately nicknamed “Bay Bay,” Thomas was born on Christmas Day, 1987, and died on Dec. 9, 2021 at the age of 33. He was known at Georgia Tech and in the NFL for his work in the community, particularly with youth initiatives.

Earlier this year, the PeyBack Foundation, the charitable organization founded and led by Thomas’ NFL teammate and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and his wife, Ashley Manning, established the Demaryius A. Thomas Scholarship Endowment at Georgia Tech. The endowment provides academic scholarships to attend Georgia Tech for incoming freshmen from Laurens County, Ga., where Thomas was born and raised, or surrounding areas, who demonstrate significant financial need.

In addition to Thomas, the 2022 ACC Football Honors Class includes Boston College’s Luke Kuechly, Clemson’s Terry Allen, Duke’s DeVon Edwards, Florida State’s Terrell Buckley, Louisville’s Bilal Powell, Miami’s Chuck Foreman, North Carolina’s Natrone Means, NC State’s David Amerson, Pitt’s Darrelle Revis, Syracuse’s Donovan McNabb, Virginia’s Thomas Jones, Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick and Wake Forest’s Ricky Proehl.

Contract for New Coach

Question for the group: how much of a premium would you pay for your desired coach? Given the institutes financial situation and that all coaching hires are hugely uncertain, what we pay the guy is just as important as who it is.

I love Deion, but if we have to outbid Auburn and Nebraska for him (IF, not saying that’s for sure how it would go down) and he gets a deal that makes the Collins deal look GT friendly, then we would be hamstrung hiring assistants and if he doesn’t work out, that’s several more years and a huge buyout down the drain. It truly becomes GT footballs last chance.

On the flip side, if you could get Key on a discounted deal (again that’s IF, but Kelly has said he thinks he’d open to that and it’s not like he will have other opportunities) it could be a low risk high reward bet. Hire a better staff around him and see if he gets the shop righted in a year or two while J Batt gets the money flowing, if he can’t move on in a year or two relatively painlessly. Two swings of the bat instead of one. This may apply to other guys not just Key, he’s just an obvious example of the type of coach who might go for it.

This is the part that’s harder to speculate about since none of us are in the room, but I think it’s just as important and something I will consider just as much as the name when the deal comes out.

Why We Should Hire An Option Coach

( Trigger warning! ;))

I know there are many who strongly disagree, and that’s fine. What I humbly request is that there be good-natured, good-faith discussion for those disagreements, where arguments are presented rather than “LOL! You’re stupid!” kinds of replies. Logic and kindness over sarcasm?

Why we should hire an option coach:

  • It’s a mathematical, numerical advantage. Defenses have to defend all 11 players horizontally and vertically. That’s the fundamental reason it’s such a successful offense. It really does boil down to something that simple. This is why you always have WR’s wide open on pass plays.
There’s more to it (formation, blocking schemes and angles, quick hitting, making defenses think too much, etc), but that’s the most fundamental reason.
  • Other offenses have tried to incorporate enough option concepts to have that numerical advantage while also keeping some notion of vanity in their look. Those offenses when they first come out have a lot of success (See Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, Dan Mullen, Gus Malzahn). But, eventually everybody copies it, and then the advantage is largely depleted.
  • How can you have a sustained successful football program at a military service academy??? I’m talking D1 football while recruiting to the military … which means you will almost certainly have the least talented personnel in the nation? You run the offense that has that numerical advantage. But, that isn’t enough, because everyone else would copy it, and then you’d have no advantage. So, how can it be possible to have sustained success at an Academy? Well, it just so happens that there’s an offense out there that has that numerical advantage, but because of the vain, evil pride of men, no one else wants to run it. That’s the only way it would even be possible to have significant, sustained success at a Service Academy.
  • Even if we hire some coach who somehow comes up with some new amazing way to get those same advantages while keeping the vanity, we will all be joyous for 1 or 2 seasons until everyone else copies it.
  • Please understand this: WE ARE NEVER GOING TO OUT RECRUIT GEORGIA AND ALABAMA, and so many other programs around us. Unless we accept this, we are doomed to poorer results. We're never going to out-Georgia/Alabama Georgia and Alabama. We HAVE to have some other advantage. If you can explain to me a better way to gain that advantage than the CPJ-option tree of coaching, I am perfectly willing to listen and be convinced. But, I think you’re going to have an extremely hard time doing that.
  • If you say Jamey Chadwell, I’ll say … Amen, let’s do it. That looks like the closest thing to the unicorn of the schematic advantage without the vanity-recruiting disadvantage.
I’d rather go with CPJ stuff, but I can get on board with the logic of the Jamey Chadwell argument. His results speak volumes.
  • Do you realize what CPJ did here? He took us to higher heights than we’ve been to since freakin’ Bobby Dodd – 2 Orange Bowls, top 10 finish, 3 wins over Georgia, ACC Champs, 3 other ACCCG appearances, so many great times on the Flats … And this was all WITHOUT support – lowest paid coaching staff in the conference … and AWFUL defense … how do you do all that with awful defense??? Give this man money to hire a great defensive staff (or even just competent), and we would’ve been continually hanging out around the Jordan River and very well might’ve crossed on over into the Promised Land.
  • Does it take more than just scheme to be a great coach? Yes. Definitively, whole-heartedly yes. But, it doesn’t take less than a great scheme to be a great coach. Great scheme is sine qua non of great coaching.
  • The option with Academy-level personnel is good. The option with GT-level personnel is great. The option with GT-level personnel + 2 or 3 key players is unstoppable (Nesbitt/Dwyer/BayBay. JT/Shaq/Smelter.). Use NIL to get those 2 or 3 key players.
  • So, this would be my order of coaches:
    1. Jeff Monken (Look at what this guy has done at freakin’ Army – hardest job in the nation. He’s CPJ-Junior).
    2. Jamey Chadwell (White and Gold Unicorn (with navy hoofs)?).
    3. Dave Clawson (Love this guy. What he’s done at Wake is outstanding. Similar to the Chadwell-unicorn scenario and should perhaps be above Chadwell).
    4. Troy Calhoun (I admittedly don’t know as much about him. He’s not directly tied to CPJ, I don’t think. Is he as good as Monken?).
    5. Deion (I mean, he’s Deion, so … is he the only person in the history of the universe who could break my argument?).

Fun!!

I want to have a little fun if that’s ok with you all. A lot of y’all like to down grade me or want to make fun of me because my education is not as par as you all but seriously. I was born in 84. So I’m 38 years old and I’m gonna give you all my all time favorite players.
Claybrook
Joe
Gathers
Phillips
Shaun
Calvin
Diesel
A ton more but those were my top 7. Let’s have fun with this please.

OT: Ron Cherry "Giving Him the Business" 15 years later

Fairly long, but there are a ton of quotes and is an excellent read on Ron Cherry's famous "giving him the business" call on NC State. Also buried in that article I didn't realize that Cherry was nearing retirement but forced to leave officiating in 2016 after being knocked out cold and receiving a concussion from a collision with USC linebacker Michael Hutchings. Cherry had to have 2 surgeries to remove pressure on his brain. He was always a character.

Couch Coach vs FSU

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. FSU. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

Defensively our worst game since minus the hopelessness but kudos to the FSU for scheming up what we like to do. We simply left our pads at home. The tackling was atrocious!

Our offense is anemic mostly due to our OL but there some missed opportunities. Pyron have us a glimpse what possibly the future may hold.

Scheme and mathematics.

giphy.gif

We are either misaligned, DL didn’t get into the gap on the slant, or FSU 2 back created a math advantage where there is a blocker for every defender. DL has to be do better on not getting reached. The backside LB can’t get caught in the wash or you’ll have easy explosive runs like this all day.

giphy.gif

The most impressive thing watching Pyron was his mechanics. Throws with a good base and compact release. This is starting p5 caliber throw in btw 2 defenders

giphy.gif

Definitely a play both Pyron & Leonard would want back. Not sure if the OL got in Pyron’s vision but this should have been thrown immediately. Leonard’s field awareness needs to kick in and he should idle this route down so he can leave himself some room to get back upfield. Should’ve been a big play

giphy.gif

This is the 2nd consecutive week our sideline tackling has been horrendous and has cost 3 TDs including the game vs. UVA
. We have the hip of ball carrier and put a shoulder pad on him

giphy.gif

This what happens when you start guessing instead of reading what’s in front of you. #9 Kennard has to remember he is run defender first. With him immediately dropping to the flat. He creates a wider hole. Also, as a defender, you CANNOT let a QB get a shot on you like this without him feeling the pain.

giphy.gif

Another Pyron fireball. Not the best matchup for Leonard against Verse. He has to sink his hips a bit me and keep his feet moving

giphy.gif

Probably should’ve been a give here. We have 3 blockers for 3 defenders on the perimeter. Should be able to get a nice chunk of yards

giphy.gif

Appear to be a blown assignment by FSU which we take advantage of. Nice corner route by Jenkins and nice ball Pyron. Both Sims & Pyron showed they can deliver if given time to deliver.

giphy.gif

Prime example of a tired and unfocused defense we played Saturday. Thomas’s read key pulls right in front of him and he doesn’t move. His lack of flow allowed the OG to climb up & seal him for a big run.

Even though, both Sims & Pyron should be included in the run game on goal to go situations, the play calls were not bad as i initially thought.

giphy.gif

The motion let us know that this man2man coverage. Ideally, i would still rather the 1on1 fade with Jenkins but Leonard was open as well. If it wasn’t for the Attaochu like get off by the LB that forced a back foot throw then this is probably a TD. Instead the ball is delivered behind then TE

giphy.gif

We got what we wanted. Pyron appear to be predetermined in his decision bc if he noticed the immediate inside leverage by the Slot CB he should’ve gunned it outside to Carter for relatively easy score. I don’t believe would’ve be to make a play as he is midpointing to take away the corner route

FOOTBALL Head coach watch list #6 Tom Herman

tps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Herman

54–22 as a HC. never had had a losing season as HC.

In 2020 they played 10 games and he had their offense ranked 7th in country! Averaging at 42.7 PPG.

He was able to progressively get his offense better and better each year he was at Texas.

Before Texas he was the HC at Houston and he had them as high as 8th in the country his first year there. Also, his offenses averaging at 18th in country (for his two seasons)

He was the OC for OSU when they won the natty.

He is currently just an analyst for the Chicago bears. He can’t be making that much money and maybe he wants to get back as a HC?

Russell can drop his stuff in later.
I'm also not giving you odds about Brent Key or odds on a freaking timeline or whatever. I'm not going to lie or make shit up like fake insiders try to do. When there is information of real substance to pass along I will do so.

If you were in charge of Official visits, what would you plan differently for a recruit’s ov to Tech for the off season, summer, and during the season?

KQ- I would do them after the season unless it is a kid from out of state (not close driving distance) who is deciding over the summer. I think you lose so much momentum trying to hold on to kids or if you don't close.

What would you guess the ratio is of new coaches coming in having moderate to impressive success in their first season vs those that have to bottom out the program before an upward trajectory?

Just trying to start setting my expectations for next year, no matter who we name as coach.

The Scooter experience has made a real negative impact on my outlook.

Of course, the Bobby Ross experience gives great hope after year one.

KQ- It is pretty random who comes out of the gate firing. A lot of it is guys who are leveling up a team that plateaued for some reason. Most of the time it takes at least to season two to have a real idea. Even with Kirby at UGA or Nick Saban at Bama they didn't come out of the gate winning 10 games with talented rosters. There is an inherent learning curve as well at many places with how things work, what the previous culture was like and how that meshes, does not mesh or works with what you are trying to do as a coach. Also do you have the key pieces that make your systems work like a decent QB who can do what you want there or certain defensive positions?

You've seen all ends of this even at GT when you compare year one of CPJ or O'Leary's first year or Bill Curry or even Collins.

Will you have an updated coaching list soon??

KQ- When I have an update on the hotboard I'll update it. People have a really screwed up understanding of how a coaching search works during the season when there is an interim coach. You can't just go out and interview guys in the middle of the season as anyone you'd like to actually employ is working. The only time that can happen is a bye week and the timing of the AD hire puts that out of the question.

Dan Mullen is sitting in an ESPN studio. Guy is well known and respected. If we gave him the money to go get a really good staff and grab recruiters that are connected to the state and SE would he be someone worth looking at?

KQ- The guy who failed at one of the most well-funded jobs, in the most talented state at the top program in that state for most recruits outside of the ones who live right near Miami and FSU. Is the fire even still there? He is a guy I've heard may never coach again.

How many laptops have you thrown across your kitchen reading these Mailbags

KQ- I use my desktop for that reason most of the time. There is probably something brewing in my brain that will kill me one day from it.

Just a guess- do we make a splash hire or a moderate hire from an unexpected place?

KQ- Lol, I appreciate the bait, but I have no freaking idea who the head coach will be. I don't know J Batt, I've seen him twice in person now in my entire life. I'm not really sure how else to explain to people it is going to be a couple of more weeks before we know anything about the coaching search.

When does a coaching search typically start in a situation where a coach is fired in October?

KQ- The search is ongoing, the issue as I stated above is when you can actually talk to people and make something happen.

What's your impression of Battman from a media POV and how much of a face for the GTAA he'll be?

KQ- Not much yet, he is green in the big room on the mic which I fully expected as someone who has never done that before. He was better on the radio and doing some other smaller setting media. I think from what I've heard from sources they want someone more front-facing and I'm sure he is capable of doing that.

- Have you gotten into the metal fusion band Polyphia?

KQ- Nope, haven't heard of them either.

Do you have a sense of when a potential coaching search would be completed?

KQ- My educated guess would be around conference championship weekend if things are working out unless they decide to go with Key. That could be announced much sooner obviously.

Does Hugh Freeze’s contract extension impact his chances of ending up at Auburn? Curious as that could mean Auburn impacting our coaching search. Yes I am assuming Auburn is looking for a new coach by the end of the year.

KQ- I think that is a safe assumption about Bryan Harsin's time on the Plains. Freeze definitely used that to leverage more from Liberty. I think there is a lot of pushback inside the SEC with what happened at Ole Miss for anyone to hire Freeze and I'm sure Auburn is aware of that. I think it will be interesting to see what their new AD does and his direction. He is actually the guy who inherited a newly hired Dan Mullen from now-Alabama AD Greg Byrne at Mississippi State. I have no idea what that relationship is but that is something interesting to me.

Just curious on your take on Miami. I thought Mario was going to be an amazing hire for them but a loss to MTSU and Duke is less than ideal. I know it’s year one but just curious to get your take.

KQ- They like FSU have a bit of a culture issue and some real lack of building blocks in key spots like the offensive line that Cristobal has to figure out. I thought it would take them two to three years to get rolling again as I thought Manny Diaz really struggled with the core pieces of that program like recruiting locally. I'll be interested to see how this turns out long term, but I'm not shocked they are having major issues.

With the season right around the corner, is there anything new on Jalon Moore?

With all the focus on Deebo/Mikes/Deivon, I think he’s being slept on more than anyone. Just wondering if you had heard anything from the staff regarding his development? Will he be ready for prime time?

KQ- The other players on the team are really high on Jalon. I'm wondering if he ends up like the sixth man this year because he can play the 4 or the 3 and even could be a small 5 against teams without a quality big man. I think he is really freaky athletically and he has a chance to be special if he can develop. He has a maturity that is a lot different than Moses Wright who he is often compared to who was goofier just by his nature.

Has there been a directive from the ACC to officials to call less holding? The number of blatant holds where our guys shoulder pads are in the air on Saturday was astounding

KQ- It is not just an ACC issue, the players have to work to make it really clear they it is bad to get any type of call. They need to teach the DL some acting chops.

Why does the ACCN have such subpar game coverage? The cameras barely know where the play is

KQ- No idea. I barely ever see the ACCN feed unless I'm watching a replay in the press box as I'm not going to regularly watch the noon or night game on there if I'm home from GT coverage.

Was Pyron a commit to Collins or more of a commit to Georgia Tech? This kid has moxie, would love to see him around next year regardless of the coaching search.

KQ- They are very happy at GT, it was about the overall vision of what GT is. I doubt he is going anywhere unless they bring in Jeff Monken to run the triple

FOOTBALL Fusile Named Burlsworth Trophy Nominee

Redshirt freshman one of 81 players nominated for award recognizing college football’s top walk-on

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech offensive lineman Joe Fusile (Richmond Hill, Ga./Richmond Hill H.S.) is one of 81 nominees for the 2022 Burlsworth Trophy, the Burlsworth Foundation announced on Tuesday. In its 13th year, the Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

A 6-foot-6, 316-pound redshirt freshman, Fusile has started all seven games that he has appeared this season at right guard for Georgia Tech. He is the Yellow Jackets’ top-rated offensive lineman as a run blocker and the Jackets’ third-highest-rated lineman as a pass blocker (min. 200 snaps), according to Pro Football Focus.

Fusile is looking to become Georgia Tech’s second Burlsworth Trophy winner, joining former Tech offensive lineman and Georgia Tech Sports Network football analyst Sean Bedford, who won the inaugural Burlsworth Trophy in 2010.

The Burlsworth Trophy is named after Brandon Burlsworth, who walked on at Arkansas in 1994, became a three-year starter and All-American and was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft. Eleven days after he was drafted, he tragically died in a car accident. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, particularly those who have limited opportunities.

Three finalists will be selected to attend the 2022 Burslworth Trophy award ceremony on Dec. 5 in Bentonville, Ark.

Fusile and the Yellow Jackets travel to Virginia Tech on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. and the game will be televised regionally on the ACC Regional Sports Network (RSN), which includes Bally Sports South in Georgia.
