GT Golf: Lamprecht Leads, Tech 2nd at Fighting Illini Invitational

No. 4 Yellow Jackets stand strong against stacked field in first fall event

Tech Schedule and Results | Live Leaderboard (Golfstat)

Olympia Fields, Ill. – All-American Christo Lamprecht got his senior year off to a hot start Friday, posting a 5-under-par 65 to lift the No. 4-ranked Georgia Tech golf team into second place after the opening round of the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational.

Lamprecht is tied for the lead individually, while the Yellow Jackets, with a 3-under-par total of 277, are one stroke behind 11th-ranked Texas (276, -4) after the first day of competition in a tournament that included 11 teams that competed in last year’s NCAA Championship. The second round gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The 6-foot-8 Tech senior led a determined opening-day effort for the Yellow Jackets, who started slowly (1-over-par at the turn), but put up eight birdies collectively on the back nine at an Olympia Fields Country Club course that just a month ago hosted a FedEx Cup Playoff event on the PGA Tour.

TECH LINEUP – Lamprecht, who opened the fall season No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and in the PGA Tour University rankings, began his senior year with a stellar round, piecing together seven birdies against just two bogeys at the par-70 Olympia Fields. The George, South Africa senior closed with three birdies in his last five holes to take the clubhouse lead before Stanford’s Karl Vilips posted another 65 later in the afternoon.

Freshman Kale Fontenot (Lafayette, La.) made a solid collegiate debut with a 1-under-par 69, recording two birdies against one bogey, and is tied for 10th place, while senior Bartley Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) also was solid, one birdie and one bogey on the way to an even-par 70 and a tie for 15th place.

Senior Aidan Kramer (Oviedo, Fla.), making just his sixth career start for the Yellow Jackets, is tied for 42nd place after posting a 3-over-par 73, while freshman Carson Kim (Yorba Linda, Calif.) carded a 78 (+8) and did not factor in the team total.

TEAM LEADERBOARD – Three Texas players broke par Friday to lead the 11th-ranked Longhorns to the top of the leaderboard, and their 4-under-par 276 total was one stroke better than the Yellow Jackets (277, -3), who benefitted from two subpar rounds and one even-par score. They were the only teams to break par Friday.

Top-ranked North Carolina, which fell to Tech in the NCAA Championship semifinals last May, settled into third place at 1-under-par 279. No. 5 Florida State (283, +3) holds fourth position, with No. 9 and host Illinois, No. 2 Arizona State and No. 13 Alabama tied for fifth at 285 (+5).

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD – Lamprecht took his 65 into the clubhouse with several teams still on the course Friday afternoon before the Cardinal’s Vilips birdied three straight holes late in his round to post a matching score.

They were one stroke better than Texas sophomore Jacob Sosa and Florida State senior Gray Albright, each of whom carded a 4-under-par 66, while North Carolina’s Maxwell Ford shot 3-under-par 67 to take fifth place alone.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION – The Yellow Jackets are competing in the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational for the second time, having shared the 2019 title with Baylor. Illinois hosts the 15-team event, which will be contested over 54 holes beginning Friday and concluding Sunday at Olympia Fields Country Club’s North course, which plays to a par-70 and measures 7,310 yards.

Participating teams include Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Purdue, Stanford and Texas. Fourteen of the 15 teams are ranked or received votes in the first Golf Coaches Association of America poll. All 15 competed in 2023 NCAA regionals, 11 of the 15 advanced to the NCAA Championship, and seven of those reached match play (quarterfinalists Arizona State, Illinois, and Pepperdine; semifinalists Florida State and North Carolina; and finalists Florida and Georgia Tech).

How many points do we need to get a W at Ole Miss?

How many will it take? The consensus across Ole Miss sites I've browsed think they win something like 42-14. How many points do you think we need to score to win and how many do you think we WILL score? I think we can win a 35-31 type game if we play like we did against UNC last year and try to slow the game and limit possessions. Defense has been iffy and I think we'll need at least 30 to win. OM seems to think we won't be able to score nearly that much on them. Thoughts?

GTVB: No. 10 Jackets Fall in Front of Record Crowd

Tech drew a record 5,303 fans before dropping its rivalry matchup with Georgia, 3-1

Box Score | Season Stats

THE FLATS
— No. 11 Georgia Tech volleyball (7-1) drew a program record crowd of 5,303 in the second ever match in McCamish Pavilion as the White and Gold were handed their first loss of the season by Georgia (8-2) in four sets, 3-1 (21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21) on Friday.

The Yellow Jackets pulled away late in the first set to open on top before dropping a heartbreaking second set in extra points, leading to the Bulldogs taking the final two sets.

Tech was fronted by senior outside hitter Tamara Otene all-around with team-highs of 13 kills and 15 digs for her fifth double of the year. Graduate middle blocker Afedo Manyang was the most efficient Jacket attacker as she did some damage on the outside and tallied six kills at an .857 clip. Senior setter Bella D’Amico picked up a double double of her own as she totaled 29 assists and 12 digs for her fourth this season. Sophomore middle blocker Liv Mogridge topped the squad in blocks, stuffing five attempts (one solo, four assisted).

How it Happened

Georgia Tech roared in front behind the home crowd early in the first set, taking the first four points of the match. Although Georgia worked its way back and kept things neck-and-neck up to a 17-all draw, the Yellow Jackets separated with another four-point run and cruised onto a 25-21 set-one victory.

The second set swung back and forth as Tech climbed in front 8-4 early, but the Bulldogs bounced back to flip the score for an 11-8 advantage. Georgia continued to work in front up to a 19-13 lead until the White and Gold rallied with six straight to even things at 19 apiece. The Yellow Jackets would claim five of the next seven points to reach match point at a 24-21 score line thanks in large part to blocks from Mogridge, but the Bulldogs fought all the way back to take the advantage, up 25-24. Tech would even things at 25 and 26, but Georgia outlasted the Jackets for a 28-26 set-two win to even the match.

Georgia continued to roll early, jumping ahead 7-1, but Georgia Tech drew back within a point after a flurry from Otene, trailing 9-8. The Bulldogs would hang onto the lead until the Yellow Jackets knotted the score at 16 all and 17 apiece, but the Bulldogs kept the pressure on and grinded out a 25-21 set-three win.

The fourth set mirrored the third with the visitors moving ahead early before the home squad drew near, but again the two sides continued to battle into double digits with Georgia owning the narrow edge. The match remained tight up to a 20-19 Bulldog lead, but Georgia came away with five of the next seven points to survive with a 25-21 set-four win and 3-1 match victory.

Up Next

Georgia Tech will continue the Georgia Tech Classic, next taking on Howard on Saturday at 4 p.m. back in O’Keefe Gymnasium.

UPDATE Q&A Programming Note..

Yesterday was my wife’s birthday. How did we celebrate, you ask? We went to a high school football game, and for 99% of the time I sat in the stands and was an observer and a dad.

Fall break kicks off here after today, so we will be heading out of town on Sunday. If anything, you’ll see more from me while I’m there not less from a posting/content standpoint (as long as I have service on the beach)

Anyways, this week’s Q&A will take place at 3:30 on Saturday.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING What I’m hearing..

Caught up with Tucker DL CJ Jackson and those around him earlier this week.
Login to view embedded media Jackson remains firmly committed to Georgia Tech, but several other schools are still in the mix.

Among those schools are two programs reaching out the most: Colorado and Alabama.

Colorado is working to try to get him on campus for the USC game later this month, the same day GT returns home to face Bowling Green.

From what I have been told, it does not sound like a final decision has been made on the visit, but many around Jackson and the Tucker program believe he will be in Boulder.

Something to keep an eye on. I plan to get over to see him and the Tucker program later this month to get a full update.

FOOTBALL NIL, the new advantage

Seeing these programs move down (Bama, OSU) from dominance, what is the thought the NIL is helping the smaller schools? With 5 stars not willing to wait, it seems that other schools are finding players jump into their laps. Deion is the hot topic and reasonably so, does this make football better right now? Ultimately, divisions like the the NFL happen some day. Thoughts? Love we have this conversation now vs not…

Georgia Tech will battle stiff competition on the road to a potential fourth straight appearance in the Big Dance as six of its 2022 home opponents competed in the 64-team field of the 2022 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship, excluding exhibition opponent Auburn who also advanced to the postseason. The White and Gold will face national title contenders Louisville and as well as Final Four foes Pitt and San Diego.

Gearing up

Headlining Tech’s 13 returners from the 2022 campaign are a pair of all-ACC second team selections in outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and setter Bella D’Amico, the former of which also receive all-region honors. The incumbents will be joined by eight highly touted new Yellow Jackets, including three transfers and five freshmen, four of which are international.

Georgia Tech heads into the 2023 season on the heels of a 2022 season that saw the Jackets earn an NCAA tournament win for the third consecutive season under coach Michelle Collier, joining the White and Gold of 2002-04 as the only squads to do so in succession in program history. The berth in the Big Dance alone marked the 12th time in program history. Going beyond 2019’s NIVC title, Tech has won 79 of its last 99 matches.
