Using Kings Legs

One thing I liked about CPJ is that he’d run the same play until the opponent could consistently stop it. Then run action off that play to really get the defense confused.

It’s hard to critique an offense that’s played so well but, I’d like to see that more from this current offense. The triple option using that TE has been killer for GT but it doesn’t seem like it’s ran enough. Getting King moving is a bonus that IMO is not utilized enough. There’s so much more that can be done with using King’s legs. (pause)

FOOTBALL Kevin Sherrer named DC, Thacker moved to Safeties coach

Georgia Tech Elevates Sherrer to Defensive Coordinator

Veteran coach to take over leadership of Yellow Jackets’ defense

THE FLATS – Kevin Sherrer has been elevated to defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, head coach Brent Key announced on Sunday.

“Our performance on defense this season hasn’t met the standard that we expect at Georgia Tech. While the responsibility for that does not fall on any one individual – in fact, as the head coach, that responsibility begins with me – I do feel that a new voice and perspective from the coordinator role is necessary for us to improve,” Key said. “Coach Sherrer is a veteran coach that has had great success in all aspects of coaching defense and at the highest levels of football. I’m confident in his ability to lead our defense and achieve the improvement that we expect and demand.”

Sherrer, who has 27 years of coaching experience, came to Georgia Tech this season as co-defensive coordinator after most recently serving as linebackers coach for the New York Giants. Andrew Thacker, who was Tech’s defensive coordinator since 2019, will now serve as the Yellow Jackets’ safeties coach.

Bowling Green named the Cheez-It National Team of the Week

DALLAS (FWAA) – The Bowling Green Falcons scored 38 unanswered points to stage an historic comeback, gaining the program’s first win over a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference in a 38-27 win at Georgia Tech. Coming back from a 14-0 deficit to win made the Falcons the Cheez-It National Team of the Week, as selected by the All-America Committee of the Football Writers Association of America.

mail
This is Bowling Green’s first national team of the week honor from the FWAA.

Connor Bazelak passed for 263 yards but it was ball control that played a decisive factor in the win. Bowling Green held the ball for 42:45 with Terion Stewart rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown, his second 100-yard game of the season. Finn Hogan caught eight passes for 102 yards, both career highs, also had a highlight-worthy one-handed catch that put the Falcons up 17-14 in the second quarter just before the half. Bazelak also rushed for a touchdown, his first on the ground at BGSU.

Bazelak and Stewart each surpassed career yardage marks in the game. Bazelak eclipsed 8,000 passing yards and 40 touchdowns for his collegiate career, and Stewart topping the 1,000-yard mark in his BGSU career. Odieu Hiliare extended his reception streak to 40 games, currently the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.

The Falcons were plus-3 in the turnover margin that included two key interceptions. One was a pick-six by cornerback Deshawn Jones Jr. with a 45-yard return, the other came from the other side as cornerback Jordan Oladokun recorded his second interception of the season and career in the fourth quarter at the Falcons’ 5-yard line. BGSU’s defense stifled Georgia Tech to just 69 rushing yards.

“I'm really proud of this team. I've said it a thousand times, we're a team that can go out and do what we did last week [a 31-point home loss to Ohio] and we're a team that can go beat a Power 5 team.” BGSU coach Scot Loeffler said. “Our challenge now is to see if we can put it back-to-back. That's hard to do right now. College football is different, just like I said last week when we played terrible, college football is week in and week out. Your mind has to be right, your heart has to be right and you have to be a selfless, team guy to get things done and that's who we have to be. We're never going to out-talent anyone, but we're going to be a team that has enough talent.”

Since 2002, the FWAA has named a National Team of the Week. Coming into the 2023 season, 284 teams have been honored, including 101 different Division I programs. Each honored team will receive a custom Cheez-It "care package" along with a hand-crafted game ball made in America by Dallas-based Big Game USA, the nation's leading manufacturer of custom footballs.

The Falcons play at Miami (Ohio) at 3:30 pm ET Saturday in a game broadcast by ESPN+.

The Good, Bad, Ugly - BG

The Good:

The Bad:

The Ugly:
Everything.

This was just as bad as Citadel and NIU. Downright embarrassing. Offense wasnt great but only had ball for 15 minutes.
The defensive performance was worst I’ve seen in a long time. Not only the effort but the game plan and execution. Thacker should have been fired last year and now should be fired again.

Q's Take Sponsored by Inteleca: Tech FB takes a leap backward

Thanks to our new sponsor Inteleca for helping bring back Q's Take my weekly look at things around GT and college sports from my vantage.

GA Tech 2 660x165.jpg

I've covered a lot of bad football both here and with some other programs I've covered and Bowling Green entered my bottom five all-time with the Independence Bowl in 2010, the MTSU 2012 sign stealing game, the Citadel loss (still the gold standard of shit shows) and the loss at Temple in 2019 (Collins horrible reaction colored this more than than the awfulness of the game). Honorable mention to the 2010 game at Kansas as well who were way worse than this BG team, but that was on the road at 11 a.m. local time.

Georgia Tech showed what they can do when they are locked in as a team, playing complimentary football and playing well at Wake Forest. That wasn't a fluke, nor were some of the performances in the Ole Miss or Louisville games. However, the second half of the Bowling Green looked like the worst moments of the Collins era.

It is Brent Key's job to fix it.

I mentioned some of the games above because CPJ who is a HOF coach had some real clunkers during his tenure here too and he would tell you that himself.

Watching the defense I feel like I am having deja vu from my first season on the beat when Paul Johnson spent many games chewing on Dave Wommack's ass. Wommack like Andrew Thacker was a thoughtful coach and not the most demonstrative coach and there was a clear disconnect in that working relationship. Wommack ended up with some redemption at Ole Miss including beating the Jackets in a bowl game in 2013.

Something is not working defensively and the team cannot tackle and they are not covering well and not tackling well either. What is weird about the defense is each week there is a different weakness. K.J. Wallace played really well in some games this year and was bad in this game and the Ole Miss game. Jaylon King played well against Wake Forest and had a bad day. Kenan Johnson still can't tackle but covers better than the other CBs. Bralen Oliver had a rough day as well.

The defense just looks fundamentally unsound at times and I could run through the middle of it because there is no one in the middle of the defense to stop the run half the time.

The third-down defense was abysmal.

Here are the third down and distances BG converted on 10 of 17 attempted yesterday,
1st QT- 3rd and 9 at the BG42, 14-yard RB run
1st QT- 3rd and 1 at the BG34, 8 yard pass
1st QT- 3rd and 10 at the BG26 10 yard pass TD a few plays later
2nd QT- 3rd and 1 at the BG45 27 yard pass
2nd QT- 3rd and 1 at the GT19 1-yd run FG later
2nd QT- 3rd and 9 at the GT26, 9 yard run
2nd QT- 3rd and 10 at the GT 14-yard TOUCHDOWN made it 17-14
3rd QT- 3rd and 8 at the GT12 10-yd pass TD a few plays later to make it 24-14
3rd QT- 3rd and 16 BG8, 17-yard QB draw drive yields a TD to make it 31-14

If they stopped three of these GT would've had a 14-13 lead at the half and they would not have scored two other touchdowns. They were all ridiculous plays as well except for the 14-yard TD which was one of the best catches I've seen in person by Hogan Finn. When he caught that ball I knew GT was in deep shit.

The defense has major problems at LB and in the secondary overall. The linebacker issues I think are as much talent-based as anything. I think the secondary is performance and coaching. They do not lack talent at all back there and there is no excuse for the poor performances from that group. Where are Rod Shelley, Kenyatta Watson, Sirad Bryant, Taye Seymore, and Omar Daniels? LaMiles Brooks has disappeared in the run game probably because he is not 100%. Find guys who want to tackle and make contact and play them back there. That is the group with the most talent and where they should be making the plays on the defense and did a year ago and the safeties other than the WF game have done nothing this season and the CBs have made almost not plays except for Kenan's late pick against Wake. Bowling Green led the nation in turnovers and the only guy close to making a pick or a big play was Paul Moala who batted a pass forward instead of intercepting it for unknown reasons.

Offensively Buster has a great opening script but they cannot sustain drives at all and cannot run the ball effectively probably in part due to the reluctance of them or Haynes King to run the ball early in games. King really seems to only run the ball at the end of halves in two-minute offense. I know he had some foot issues coming to GT, maybe that is still an issue, but it is hard to run this offense if he won't run the ball consistently. King also cost the team -10 points thanks to his intentional grounding play where he should've just ate the sack and they could've kicked a medium-range FG instead of dancing out and throwing the ball away with his left hand and then the terrible pick-six. The second pick was not his fault though he probably put too much on the ball for the RB.

The offense was not good after the first two drives.

Here is an example of what happened after that, BG scores to make it 14-7.

GT ball at their own 29, Cooley rushes for one yard, pass for -5 to Cooley, false start on Singleton on third down to make it 3rd and forever, pass to Blaylock well short of the sticks.

The next drive after the defense actually gets a stop at the GT20, Haynes -1 run, two incomplete passes and a punt.

Next drive at the GT32, Haynes runs for 15 yds on first down, then 0 yards net play, two incomplete passes and then the bad snap punt fumble that led to a short field TD for Bowling Green to put them up 17-14.

Next drive is two-minute offense from the GT25, pass to Rutherford for 12 yards, Cooley runs on first down 2 yds, King runs three times for 25 yards plus a late hit on him to the BG21. King gets sacked because they don't account properly for an extra blitzer and leave someone in to chip, he misses going for Singleton in the end zone and then the horrid intentional grounding because they are not accounting for a blitz look by having someone block extra defenders. Just fundamentally unsound pre-snap. Cost GT at least 3 points.

The first drive of the 3rd QT they got stopped twice trying to pick up one yard and turned it over on downs trailing 24-14.

The drive after that King throws the pick six to end any realistic comeback bid IMO to make it 31-14.

Offensively they have to figure out how to run the ball. If that is using two TEs, three TEs, 2 RBs, 3 RBs, jet-sweeps, running King more or whatever. They can't run the ball 18 times in a football game by design and expect to win. Actually, the called runs were probably less than 18.

The special teams' gremlins struck again. That was a pretty speechless moment.

----

Key has to figure out how to fix this and how to make his team look like they care. They reminded me of Maryland melting in black jerseys in the sun yesterday in 2011 when the Terps tried to wear fancy black UA jerseys and it was October 8th and still hot as hell. That didn't help either. The black jerseys GT used to wear back in the day were probably hot as hell too and a bad idea. I hope they burn the jerseys.

Fans understand being beaten by a superior opponent or having some weird game even like the sign-stealing game with CPJ many years ago, but clearly on here some folks either didn't know what happened or are opting to pretend that isn't why they lost that game.

Ironically the sign-stealing game was the last straw for DC Al Groh at Georgia Tech as CPJ fired him at the next bye week a game later after a loss to Clemson.

I don't advocate for coaching changes midseason, especially with coordinators, but there is something seriously wrong and dysfunctional on the defensive side of the ball right now. Bowling Green is a decent MAC team but GT had superior talent at every spot on the field that I saw except maybe that bowling ball of a running back and one receiver.

The offensive inconsistency is a little more understandable given the lack of a dynamic starting RB of the caliber GT fans are used to seeing here over the years that can break tackles and run people over like Jordan Mason, Dedrick Mills, Marcus Marshall, etc... I figured there would be growing pains and I've been impressed with Haynes King and how he as played most of the time. I thought he was not sharp yesterday and floated some balls and made some poor decisions that reminded me more of the guy at TAMU than the player he has been at GT. Hopefully, that does not repeat at Miami this coming week.

I also think the season is not over, but Key has a lot of work to do and he does not have a long rope. J Batt has shown he expects results and Key knows that. Josh Pastner's quick exit was a prime example of him being willing to make changes and not sit on his hands. I think Key is very capable of running this program and being a great head coach but he has to figure out how to both motivate his team and get the most of his staff and players. That is how he got the job in the first place and rallied the team a year ago. More games like this and you lose the locker room and lose the plot some. The schedule still sucks as well and they could really use an upset in Coral Gables next week, but I'm not overly optimistic unless the team that played at Winston-Salem shows up again.

GTVB: No. 11 Yellow Jackets Drop Demon Deacons

Tech tackles Wake Forest for its first five-set victory of the season

Box Score | Season Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C
— No. 11 Georgia Tech volleyball (13-1, 4-0 ACC) won its first five-set affair of the season over Wake Forest (11-4, 2-2 ACC) on Sunday afternoon in Reynolds Gymnasium. A standout performance from junior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and surgical execution from the service line propelled the Yellow Jackets to victory, coming out on top, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12). The triumph maintained their third hottest start in program history, trailing just the 2003 (23-0) and 1996 (16-0) White and Gold.

Bertolino carried the Jackets in both phases, leading the squad with a career-high 22 kills at a .352 clip, four aces, a career-best tying four blocks (three solo, one assisted) and 14 digs. The Argentinian’s effort resulted in her fourth double double of the season.

Three donning the White and Gold played a key role in Tech’s defensive success as they each had five or more blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Anna Boezi exploded for a career-high eight blocks, freshman right side hitter Larissa Mendes tallied a personal best six blocks and junior middle blocker DeAndra Pierce tied her career mark of five blocks (two solo, three assisted). Mendes also pitched in nine kills, while a pair of seniors pitched in double-digit digs in outside hitter Tamara Otene (12 digs, seven kills) and libero Paola Pimentel (13 digs).

For the first time in her career, freshman setter Heloise Soares took the reins as primary setter with personal bests across the board in assists (34), digs (eight) and blocks (two), plus an ace. Fellow freshman setter Deren Cukur also spent some time at the helm, earning career highs of four assists and two digs on top of an ace. Joining the slew of career performances was junior outside hitter Leia Harper, tying her top mark of seven kills at a .333 clip.

Tech separated itself from Wake Forest from the service line and at the net with stark advantages in aces (11-3) and blocks (17-12).

How it Happened

After a pair of early streaks as Georgia Tech used a five-point run to move in front, 6-4, the first set went back and forth. Wake Forest would take the lead, moving ahead by as much as four at 15-11, but a pair of three-point bursts later pushed the White and Gold back in front, 19-18. The Yellow Jackets would ultimately rally, taking four of the final five points as a Bertolino kill secured a 25-22 set one win.

The second set remained nip and tuck as neither side managed to separate until the Demon Deacons strung together three points, resulting in a 16-12 lead. The Yellow Jackets would trim the advantage to just one, trailing 19-18, and later battled off two set points, but the Deacs would prevail in set two 25-22.

Georgia Tech did its damage in pairs early in the third set, moving on top, 12-9. Wake Forest used a couple of three-point rallies to knot the match at 13 and later take a 16-15 lead, but the White and Gold responded with four straight points of their own to boost back in front, 19-16. The Jackets staved off the Deacs from there, answering each swing as a Pierce ace sealed the set, 25-22, for a 2-1 match advantage.

Wake Forest took a lead at 3-2 that it would hang onto throughout the fourth set, but Tech continued to fight each push. Despite the Demon Deacons taking five points in six chances to move up to a 16-9 lead, the Yellow Jackets would use a four-point rally to pull within two, trailing 17-15. Georgia Tech would stay close up to a 21-18 deficit, but Wake Forest later closed out the set on top, 25-21.

Heading to their first fifth set of the season, the Jackets erupted, winning seven of the first eight points. The White and Gold pushed further up to an 11-5 advantage, and despite a late comeback by the Deacs to keep things interesting, a Mendes kill would ultimately seal the 15-12 triumph in set five for 3-2 match victory.

Up Next

Georgia Tech will finish the tail end of its four-match road stint, heading to No. 8 Pitt on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup in Pittsburgh before wrapping up the trip at Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.

Breaking…..

We woke up this morning! Life is good, our football team isn’t!
Som of y’all are very passionate, some or emotionally unstable, and all of us are shaking our heads saying WTF!
Let’s hope it gets better and lets look to the bright side, Haynes King, and the offense is exciting at times.
Have a great day and take some advil, lithium, and anything else that may mellow you out!

FOOTBALL What would you do?

Curious to hear what some of y’all think you would do to “right the ship” per se.

Obviously Key is not getting fired this year, but something clearly needs to change.

IMO I’m willing to give the offensive staff time to continue to work through kinks and stuff, but the defensive staff is what I would change.

Thacker and his staff on that side needs to go IMO!

What y’all say?

As always GO JACKETS!

To J Batt: Trash these uniforms, rid the program of the distractions!

Please, get rid of these stupid uniform reveals and whatever crap is involved with them. It's a distraction, taking focus away from the only job the players have on the field, to win. They are not freaking models or billboards, they are student-football players. I'm sure there are more issues we can point to but to me this goshawful performance is about focus. No focus and anyone can beat you on any day. This loss will probably set the program back at least a year, to the last moments that Collins was in charge. It will bring questions to Key's leadership. But how can he lead when there are distractions abounding, like these dayum stupid uniforms. Instead of glowing (pun intended) praise they are going to be ridiculed. Was it freaking worth it? Why do we have to do this every week? It is a distraction. Pure and simple. They have no place during game week, there is only time for planning, practice, classes, chow and whatever precious time is left should be for getting some sleep. FFFF the distractions, ffff these uniforms.

After sleeping on it...

... I'm still pissed! What a absolutely and gutless performance to be dominated by Bowling Green at home. All positive momentum out the window. I don't think we'll go winless the rest of the season, we should be able to get a few more wins but post-season is not in play this year fellas.

The conspiracy theorist in me keeps thinking Key retained Thacker partially due to staff salary limitations but also to have as a scapegoat for performances like this. Thacker is Key's safety valve for a bad season and I see him using this an excuse in the offseason.
