FOOTBALL Georgia Tech football practice notes and quotes 10/4

Haynes King stayed out for extra work for almost an hour after practice ended today. He was the last up to the media thing, but I'll open with him. He still had his full pads on when he came up to talk to us.

King studied Miami last year as TAMU and the Canes were playing the first of a two-game series last year. He said that it is a new DC but he knows some of the personnel from that film work last year. He said they like to blitz and they play well up front and they pursue the ball well and play with some physicality. He said they are fast and well-coached on the defensive side.

I asked about the lulls offensively and he said that is something they are working very hard on at the moment. Keeping the foot on the gas pedal and not letting up. He said that is something they are pushing in practice even in indy drills. Having that mindset of being locked in all the time and being dead serious right now. He said they are trying to change things here and everybody is ready to get that done.

When asked about Chase Lane's possible return, King said that it would mean a lot for the offense because he has a lot of experience and is very smart, savvy and consistent. He said sometimes guys get hurt and it has to be the next man up but adding Lane back would help the depth a lot.

King said there needs to be more player accountability across the board in games and they know when someone is not going full speed or playing the way they are capable of and they need to step up and be vocal when they see that. They also need to have the mindset of giving everything. He said sometimes you are sick or tired, but you have to not want let guy next to you down and just keep playing and finish. He said that is where the players have to hold each other accountable and challenge each other.

King said they are doing more good-on-good work and really getting after it in practice the whole time. He said some guys have tried to say they were tired and wanted to sub out and Key kept them in so they could see how they perform when they are like that and he said they are finding out a lot about each other right now. King said the losing said has up/downs now and the players don't want to be the ones having to do up/downs and gassers so they are pushing more. He said that it has guys more hyped up and excited.

I asked him about being a more vocal leader on both sides of the ball, King said, "mostly likely yes. The other part is just letting them know because sometimes you've got to change your kind of attitude and behavior towards them... Now I've probably got to be the guy to drop the hammer a little bit and be like, hey we are not having that anymore. We've got to lock in and kind of set that tone."

King said that sometimes guys are vocal to be vocal but it is just words, he said that the tone and message can change and that is what he is working on as a leader.

I asked Christian Leary about the lulls and he said it is about consistency of play. "we have to stick to what we know and get the ball to the playmakers in space and just everybody has to play fast." He said there are little things they need to clean up as well.

Leary said that some teams are overplaying the screen game against them and that just opens up other stuff but might be why you don't see as many screens in a given game.

I asked him about how he decides on taking the ball out of the end zone or not and Leary said that Jamal Haynes and him have sort of a signal about that and he is pretty good about telling him when to go and when to take the touchback. He tries to approach it like every return is returnable though.

Leary said it was nice scoring his first college touchdown since 2021 on Saturday. He said it was, "good to be back in the chicken box as I like to say. I hope I get there a little more to help the team." That is not a typo, he calls the end zone the chicken box.

Leary said that he knows a few Miami players from the Orlando area and they are pretty close and there has been smack talk since they were little so he is looking forward to playing the Canes this weekend.

Clayton Powell-Lee was the poor dude who had to come talk on behalf of the defense. He summed up the decision to demote Andrew Thacker and move up Kevin Sherrer like this:

"No real reaction out of me personally, is really not that big of a change for us, It's just the same people in different chairs and a different person presenting whatever the install may be that day or that week. But really for us, it's just same standard gonna keep holding the highest standard of playing fast, playing physical, making plays, and eliminate explosives. So for us there's nothing really different just the same people different chairs.

Powell-Lee also said of the BG game,

"There were lot of mistakes in the game in all three phases of ball honestly, from special teams to defense to offense. We can't have days like that and games that are, I would say crucial to later on in the season. I will say when you need those games that you should have won back in October now but like you need those games honestly. We've definitely been really revved up the intensity and the aggression in practice. A lot of good on good and a lot of film watching, honestly, because we have a good opponent coming up this week, and we want to be the best prepared and I feel like this week is a great week to show the world that that's not us. Let's just get back to what we used to do when let's just keep on rolling."

Powell-Lee said the team has had issues staying mentally focused for four quarters and there have been mental lapses and they have to stay sharp, trust their peers to make plays and make the plays. Do your job and trust that your teammate will do their job and rally to the ball.

He said of being on the field for 42 minutes on D, it can hurt execution but they've practiced in the blazing sun and it was not any different on Saturday and they have to be mentally and physically prepared for games like that and buckle down. They needed to change the balance of the game and get the offense hyped up by their play and they didn't do that.

Powell-Lee said that Miami has really good players and a good quarterback and they've put a lot of emphasis on what he is capable of and they've got good slots and a good RB, but it isn't anything they haven't seen already this year so they've got to stick to the game plan and play fast and physical and eliminate the explosives and if they do they will have a good time on Saturday.

Powell-Lee said they really need to glove the receivers in coverage so they can get tips and PBUs. They are emphasizing PBUs and being disruptive to the receivers and getting them off their timing on the routes because that disrupts the QB as well and then you can make big plays.

Powell-Lee on toughness that Key is preaching, it is about allowing yourself to be coached and taking those mental tough times and applying the lessons and that is what builds character and will build toughness as a team. You have to draw back to a moment in practice and remember that moment is no bigger than the play in practice and make a play. We've got what it takes to be mentally tough.

I asked him about Thacker working with the safeties again and he said that Thacker has always worked with them but as the DC he would also go over to the other position groups as well. He said now Thacker is emphasizing his work with the safeties and he is able to use his strengths as a coach with them and he is a super smart guy and teaches everything well and has them well-prepared. Powell-Lee thinks having him help there will have his group more prepared.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING I talked to RB trainer Brad Lester.........

Sat night after the game i stopped at hooters in gwinnett and started up a conversation with a guy at a table next to me. He happened to be Brad Lester, former Auburn RB and brother of former GT WR Greg Lester. He told me he is now training running backs and trained Mcduffie and Dontae Smith. He also trained Duke Watson, former commit from Mary Persons and Trelain Maddox. He told me that our new coach's told our players not to use outside coach's and to only use our coach's. It pissed him off. He said that he was the one that persuaded Duke Watson to decommitt and the he is trying to do the same with Trelain. I asked him why he was doing that and he said that our coach's burned bridges. It was a very interesting conversation. He didn't seem interested in helping Tech out at all.

Back in the day, business attire (coat & tie) was the standard dress code for those covering a team. What's the dress code for folks in the press box these days?

KQ- There isn't one. I usually wear shorts and a polo or jeans and a polo shirt. Chad from the AJC is a button-down and khaki guy. One of the co-workers at the AJC is into wearing T-shirts with an unbuttoned collared shirt which is probably the most casual non-student dress I've ever seen. Most people are polo/button-down shirts and shorts when it is warm or jeans or khaki pants.

On an administrative level, is there any truth to the "Clemson wants out now" rumors? ...or is this just a pocket of fans who are making noise?

KQ- Clemson can want whatever they want. There are two issues at play here. One is the lack of an ability to get out of the GOR and no one will touch them until that is settled and the second one is ESPN has put a blockade on the SEC expanding or spending more money on college sports at the moment. I think the same people complaining about Calford are also totally against Clemson being a token Big 1G team when push comes to shove. Even the people reporting that Clemson wants to go to court are also maintaining they expect them to end up in the SEC. I personally think this is like the FSU thing, it is about pride and fundraising and trying to leverage the ACC. It worked out poorly for FSU.

Is there any reason we seldom travel to anywhere outside of the South East or invite power five teams from let’s say the Big 10 to Bobby Dodd? It has been more than 100 years since we faced Michigan and we have never faced Ohio State!

KQ- During the CPJ era the non-conference schedule became pretty difficult as teams tried to duck GT. I know former ADs tried to set up series with Northwestern and Purdue in the Big Ten and Cal and Stanford in the Pac-12 at the time and they were not interested in dealing with the triple.

The rule of thumb for non-conference scheduling during Chan and CPJ was sticking primarily with road games in areas they recruit heavily or 2-for-1 scenarios. That changed when they did those deals with Temple, USF, and UCF but they fit in the recruiting footprint so that was the reason for those games. Originally the BYU and Tulane series were 4-game series. The last two games were canceled both times as I recall. I know that happened with Tulane and I'm pretty sure with BYU.

From your perspective truly how different is the atmosphere and locker room from the last regime?

KQ- I'm not in the locker room. I likely will hear more about this after the season but whenever there is a coaching change at a school and I've covered quite a few there is usually a big shift and in the day and age of the portal there are concerns about how transfers get treated versus new players and there can be some leadership voids within the team. I think you are seeing that right now and that has been a constant during the entire GC3 era as well.

We know Key prefers to build a program from the high school ranks and retain those guys, but scale of 1 to 10, how hard do you think Key goes into the portal to fix the defense going into next year? With FSU and Notre Dame rotating back on plus the usual games, it only gets harder in ‘24.

KQ- Key wants to win. He tried to add some other players via the portal this past cycle to bolster the defense but they were outbid by multiple programs. Russell has detailed at least one of the situations that was more public where the kid ended up at the real USC for example. Collins lost out on some guys for the same reasons in 2022. They have to invest wisely with the funds they have in the portal targets and make sure they can be competitive and you can find some decent pieces.

A question for Coach Key - how do you reconcile your strong emphasis on toughness yet see your team repeated play with such a lack thereof, especially on the defensive side of the ball?

KQ- I can tell you what any coach would say. When you are dealing with 18-24 year-olds finding consistency is extremely difficult. Nick Saban struggles with it, the guy to the East does as well. They have significantly better talent who can somewhat overcome some of it, but I think you are seeing uneven products across CFB right now. There were two games just as ugly as GT's on Saturday. One the better team lost UCF-Baylor and the other USC held on barely over Colorado. Both of them jumped out early and went into coast mode and nearly blew it.

Teams are very fragile across CFB right now in large part I think due to the portal and the constant turnover on coaching staffs.

Saw Khari Gee dressed with his helmet on during defensive possessions. Encouraging to see a guy bounce back who had a serious health issue off field. Any idea how he’s been doing?

KQ- He is trying. He has been dressed a few times this year. I don't know if he will be able to play meaningful defensive snaps any time soon, but I'm happy to see him back out there.

You've discussed the "cheating" with MTSU in 2012. What's the story?

KQ- GT played them two years in a row and the third year apparently the genius Al Groh didn't change up his defensive signs and they stole Groh's calls and they adjusted to them. I think Buster was on that staff as the OC. It is a shame on Groh deal. CPJ wasn't mad they stole the signs, he was mad at Al for using the same damn signs for three years.

Are you surprised that after so many people gave the clown 3 or even 3+ years before they realized he was pathetic that many of those same people are wanting Brent canned after 1 💩 game?

KQ- I think there are a lot of people that have years of pent-up frustrations from 2016 onwards. It has been a rough patch for GT football overall during that stretch. There are always dudes who are not going to like a hire and not support the coach. I remember when I started an asshole "media" guy started a fire Paul Johnson in 2010. It was maybe the dumbest ****ing thing I've ever seen from a so-called media person. That sack of shit had his credentials pulled, but he had some dumbass fans supporting him.

Part 1: Are Brent and J Batt aligned in their approach to fix the football program? Said another way, do they agree on the prioritization of things needed to get things back on track, whether it be NIL, money for assistants, facilities, scheduling, etc.?

KQ- As much as they can be. I think their jobs differ in terms of priorities. Key is going to push for whatever he thinks he needs and whatnot. J Batt's job is the overlook the entire organization and balance Key's needs with the resources GT has. I think they have a good working relationship and an understanding of the needs/challenges/obstacles at hand.

Part 2: How involved is J Batt in the operations of the football program? Are he and Brent formally meeting daily, weekly, monthly, or even less frequently than that? I would think, just like any other job, you're having at least somewhat regular check-ins with your boss to report on progress, escalate issues or needs, etc.

KQ- Key meets with J Batt every week in and out of season and they go over everything that is going on so there is transparency. I actually bumped into Key and Batt both walking to the Edge this summer for one of these meetings so they were going on even during the most quiet part of the year. Batt is not an absent AD. He comes to practice and is monitoring what is going on with every sport.

PHYSICALLY PUNISHING TACKLER

On the Falcons game on of the analysts just said the Falcons want their defense to be known for their physically punishing tacklers. No sure they are accomplishing that goal but it made me realize our GT defense doesn't have a single player I would call a physically punishing tackler - not even sure we have a single good tackler. That's a problem that needs to be fixed if GT is to improve.
