FOOTBALL OT: Week Seven Games

Here’s the games I’m looking at this week:

Weekday games:

I may actually turn the Liberty game on in the background Tuesday night just to see what’s up. With their resources and profile that program could become something.

I may watch the first half of Stanford-Colorado on Friday night so when this becomes an official Deion sports forum I won’t be completely out of the loop.

Early Saturday games:

An incredibly weak slate for early games. Tune in to Cuse-FSU to boost the ACC ratings and see whether FSU can stay focused.

Middle Saturday games:

I’ll be watching Texas A&M at Tennessee, mostly because I have been waiting for a straight up fist fight between Petrino and Fisher. With Jerry Springer dead this may be the only chance I have to see that again live in my lifetime.

I’ll also obviously be watching Oregon and Washington. Dan Lanning may have actually developed a defense west of the Rockies, which is Oppenheimer levels of brilliance if true.

Late Saturday games:

I’ll be keeping an eye on Louisville at Pitt. Having nothing but contempt for Nadsoozey and Pitt I hope Louisville stomps them. We need more good teams in the ACC and I hope Louisville runs the table now.

I’m watching Miami at UNC for the same reason. I do not love UNC but the ACC needs them to keep winning.

USC-Notre Dame/UCLA-Oregon St are my runner ups I’ll check in with. UCLA also apparently has a defense.

I’ll also have a browser or tv on NCST-Duke to support the ACC.

What are you guys looking for this week?

GT Golf: Three Jackets Competing in 2023 World Amateur Team Championships

Lamprecht, Reuter, Tai representing their home countries in prestigious amateur event

2023 WATC official site

THE FLATS – For the second straight year, Georgia Tech golfers Christo Lamprecht (South Africa), Benjamin Reuter (The Netherlands) and Hiroshi Tai (Singapore) are set to represent their home countries and compete this week in the World Amateur Team Championships in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The 72 holes of competition takes place Wednesday through Saturday at the National Course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

Lamprecht, a senior for the Yellow Jackets, is the top-ranked amateur in the world, vaulting to the No. 1 spot after winning The Amateur Championship in June and earning low amateur honors at The Open Championship. A first-team All-American in 2023, the native of George, South Africa also is No. 1 in the current PGA Tour University Rankings and has earned a victory (Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational) and a runner-up finish (Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational) in Tech’s two fall events so far. He has two career collegiate tournament victories, including the Inverness Intercollegiate in the fall of 2022.

Reuter, a junior for the Jackets, played in five events for the Yellow Jackets in 2022-23 with a high finish of 12th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate. He went on to finish 44th at the European Amateur Championship and 54th at the European Amateur Team Championship during the summer. Reuter also finished eighth at the Dutch National Stroke Play Championship and 21st at the Dutch Amateur Championship, both in August.

Tai, a sophomore from Singapore, is currently No. 67 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, posting his highest finish of the summer at the Dogwood Invitational (19th). He is coming off a stellar freshman year in which he won two tournaments (Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational and the Maui Jim Individual Event) and was the runner-up for medalist honors at the ACC Championship.

Lamprecht and Tai traveled to Abu Dhabi Sunday night following their participation in Tech’s Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational. Reuter made the trip last week.

Conducted by the International Golf Federation (IGF), the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition. The women compete for the Espirito Santo Trophy (Oct. 25-28) and the men compete for the Eisenhower Trophy. The Eisenhower Trophy men’s competition includes 36 teams, each with four players who each play 18 holes of stroke play over four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship.

Lamprecht, Reuter and Tai are among nine Georgia Tech players who have competed in the World Amateur Team Championships. David Duval (1990, 1992), Matt Kuchar (1998) and Bryce Molder (2000) have represented the United States, while Mauricio Muniz (1994, 1996, 1998, 2008) played for Puerto Rico, and Minghao Wang (2010, 2012) competed for China.

Big guy, could be next in line next with CJ's decommitment.

Brent Key

Everybody in this site has talked about things that nobody should be talked about. We don’t have the coaches that most wanted but can I remind you all. Brent Key may have lost some bad game in just a year as a head coach but let me all remind you. Key is 3-0 vs ranked teams in the acc! We all need to be patient and give the man his due. He deserves it

Asking for Prayers From The JOL Family

As many on here probably know, my dad has been battling Cancer. The folks at Emory decided to add an additional 46hour chemo treatment only 11 days after his previous 46hour chemo treatment and it was just too much for his body to handle. Please pray for he and my family. The poor guy went into the hospital Saturday afternoon and didn't even get to see the Miracle in Miami after having watched that awful BG game. Funny how life works😡 Thank you!

FOOTBALL Buster Faulkner Crazy Stat

Six games in, I think it's pretty fair to say that Buster Faulkner has done a phenomenal job with improving our offense. Here's the most absurd stat: Until this year, Georgia Tech hasn't been ranked in the TOP 80 nationally in passing yards per game since 2001. We are currently 36th!! The teamrankings website doesn't go further back than 2003, but I'd guess the 2001 team was the last one with a passing attack this potent. I'm not saying Buster Faulkner deserves the Broyles Award, but it shouldn't be understated the improvement he's made on that side of the ball in such short time. Tons of credit to Haynes King and Chris Weinke, as well. Also our highest and second highest rank in total yards and points per game, respectively, in seasons running a "conventional offense."

Here is the breakdown of total yards/passing yards/rushing yards/points per game rank from the last 20 years:
2023 - 53/36/79/59
2022 - 110/100/93/124
2021 - 91/100/52/98
2020 - 67/90/43/92
2019 - 127/124/72/125
2018 - 65/129/2/27
[Triple option years all pretty similar to 2018 in passing/rushing rank]
2007 - 70/92/34/88
2006 - 64/88/33/52
2005 - 72/87/48/102
2004 - 86/85/60/84
2003 - 91/97/47/86

GT Golf: Tech Finishes Runner-up at Golf Club of Georgia

Lamprecht fires 65 Sunday for No. 12 Yellow Jackets, Kramer ties for 9th individually

Tech Schedule and Results | Final Leaderboard (Golfstat) | Complete Results (PDF)

Alpharetta, Ga. Christo Lamprecht fired a 7-under-under-par 65 Sunday to pace Georgia Tech to a 9-under-par round of 279, and the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets finished as the runner-up for the second straight year at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational.

In chilly and breezy conditions Sunday, Tech started the round in third place, six shots off the lead of East Tennessee State and one behind Washington. The Jackets were able to overtake both teams, with whom they were paired, but No. 25 Virginia put together a tournament-record round of 269 (19 strokes under par), leaping from fourth place to win the team title going away. The Cavaliers finished the tournament with a 25-under-par score of 839, six strokes ahead of Tech (845, -19).

Four Yellow Jackets finished in the top 20 individually, led by seniorAidan Kramer, who notched a career-best tie for ninth place.

Tech returns to action at the end of October, splitting its team to compete in the East Lake Cup, Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at the Atlanta Athletic Club, and the Cypress Point Classic, Oct. 30-31 in Monterey, Calif.

TECH LINEUP – After struggling for the first two rounds at 3-over-par, Lamprecht ignored the blustery conditions Sunday and matched the low round of the tournament without recording a bogey. The senior from George, South Africa eagled the opening hole, made birdie on four of five holes around the turn, and finished with another birdie at 18. Lamprecht wound up in a tie for 14th place individually at 212 (-4).

Kramer, who led the Jackets in the opening two rounds with scores of 70-70, continued his steady play Sunday with a 71, finishing with a birdie at 18 for a 5-under-par total of 211. The senior from Oviedo, Fla., tied for ninth place individually, the first top-10 finish of his career. His previous best finish was a tie for 13th at the Golf Club of Georgia event in 2021, in which he posted a 6-under-par 210 score.

Senior Bartley Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) also delivered a 71 Sunday, while defending champion Hiroshi Tai (Singapore) added an even-par 72 to the Jackets’ total. Tai tied for 14th place overall at 212 (-4), while Forrester tied for 18th place at 213 (-3).

Tech’s “B” group finished last, but posted a 3-under-par score of 285 Sunday as freshman Carson Kim (Yorba Linda, Calif.) shot 2-under-par 70, and sophomore Brady Rackley IV (Atlanta, Ga.)added a 71. Senior Andy Mao (Johns Creek, Ga.) was the group’s highest finisher, tying for 25th place at 1-under-par 215.

TEAM LEADERBOARD – Virginia clicked on all cylinders Sunday with five subpar rounds, getting a 65 from Ben James, a 66 from Deven Patel and a 68 from Bryan Lee. Its 19-under-par round erased an 18-under-par effort by Georgia Tech in 2018 from the tournament record book, and the Cavaliers posted a 25-under-par tournament total of 839.

Tech, at 19-under-par 845, finished as the runner-up for the second straight year and for the third time in the tournament’s history. The Jackets have won it twice.

No. 11 East Tennessee State, the 36-hole leader, was 1-over-par Sunday and finished in third place at 848 (-16), followed by No. 7 Washington at 849 (-15) and No. 26 Duke at 852 (-12).

Charlotte (858, -6), Southern California (860, -4), Texas A&M (861, -3), Tennessee (862, -2) and Pepperdine (863, -1) rounded out the top 10.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD – Algot Kleen of East Tennessee State, who held the 36-hole lead by himself, shot 70 Sunday and shared medalist honors with UCLA’s Omar Morales, who shot 69. Both players finished 54 holes at 11-under-par 205.

Pepperdine’s Mananth Chirravuri and Charlotte’s Conor Gough tied for third place at 207 (-9), followed by Mats Ege of ETSU and Ben James of Virginia at 208 (-8). Washington’s Finn Noelle was seventh at 209 (-7), with Clemson’s Jonathan Nielsen eighth (210, -6).

Tech’s Kramer and four others tied for ninth at 211 (-5).

GTVB: No. 11 Georgia Tech Falls to Miami

Jackets drop a tight contest in three sets

Box Score | Season Stats

THE FLATS
– The Georgia Tech volleyball team (15-3, 6-2 ACC) came up short on Sunday afternoon, falling to Miami (12-6, 5-3 ACC) inside O’Keefe Gymnasium. Two of the three sets were decided by the minimum, two, points as the Yellow Jackets just couldn’t overcome Miami’s defense (25-23, 25-20, 26-24).

Quick Hits

  • This was the 22nd consecutive sellout at O’Keefe Gymnasium dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Senior libero Paola Pimentel led all players with 13 digs, her ninth consecutive 10+ dig match. She has reached double digit digs in 17 of 18 matches this season.
  • Junior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino led the team with 13 kills, narrowly missing out on a double double with nine digs.
  • Senior outside hitter Tamara Otene collected double-digit kills for the fourth straight match, finishing with 12.
  • Otene owns 950 career kills, the most on the roster, as she closes in on her 1,000th career kill.
  • Freshman setter Heloise Soares led the way with 28 assists and six digs. She posted multiple blocks for just the second time in her collegiate career (also at Wake Forest).
  • This was Tech’s first home loss to Miami since 2017.
Set By Set

Set 1 (UM, 25-23):
Bertolino started the match right where she left off on Friday, producing the first two points of the match off a solo block and a kill from Soares. Both sides settled into their systems from there on, trading points until the 14-13 mark when Miami won seven of eight points to take a 20-15 advantage and force a timeout from Coach Collier. Tech came out of the timeout with a 6-1 run, thanks to some strong serving from Pimentel to tie the set back at 21-21 but the Hurricanes’ fourth ace of the set brought the set to a close with the Jackets on the wrong end of a 25-23 score. Both sides utilized strong back row defense with the Hurricanes holding a 19-18 advantage in digs by the end of the set. Pimentel led all players with seven digs while Otene headlined the offense with five kills.

Set 2 (UM, 25-20): The back-and-forth battle continued into the second set with neither side leading by more than two points until the Hurricanes went on. 4-0 run to take the 15-12 lead heading into the media timeout. The Jackets fought to reduce the lead but couldn’t manage to get closer than two points as the Hurricanes took the set by five. Bertolino paced the offense with five kills to go along with three digs while Pimentel secured her 10th dig of the match.

Set 3 (UM, 26-24): Mendes found her groove at the start the third set, helping the Jackets jump in front 7-2 with a pair of kills. But the momentum slipped to the other side of the net as Miami came back to tie, 11-11, and eventually take a 20-14 lead. Bertolino stepped up with a pair of kills as Otene kept the Miami offense out of system from the service line to help GT on a 6-0 run, tying the score back at 20-20. But the comeback wasn’t to be as Miami won the set off an ace, 26-24.

Up Next

The Jackets continue the four-match homestand next weekend when they host Duke (Oct. 20) and North Carolina (Oct. 22) inside O’Keefe Gymnasium. The matches will start at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m.respectively and will both air on ACC Network Extra.

Former Jackets week 7

I figured this would be a good time to check in on this. Obviously, some games are ongoing but this is more of a look at the body of work this season thus far.

The Good:

DE- Jared Ivey (Ole Miss) 71.8 PFF in 264 snaps two sacks and 24 tackles, but he had a 59 PFF against GT.

WR- Nate McCollum (UNC) missed the first game, but has posted a 78.2 PFF starting the last three games in a row. He has 28 catches for 355 yds and 1 TD. Numbers are pretty much on par with GT production. Half of his stats are from the win over Minnesota 15-165-1. He had a good game last week against Cuse in a blowout win as well. I'll be curious to watch him against Miami.

DT- Akelo Stone (Ole Miss) 75.0 PFF in 159 snaps as a backup DT. He has 15 tackles, 1.5 sacks this season.

S- Wesley Walker (Tennessee)- 82.7 PFF in the first five games all starts, 317 snaps. 23 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF, 0 INTs this year so far.

The Average:

OLB- Chico Benett (UVA) 56.4 PFF in 231 snaps, but his numbers have been improving the last three games in a row after a rough game against Maryland. He has 15 tackles, but no sacks this season after having 7 last year.

OLB/DE- Jordan Domineck (Colorado)- 63.8 PFF score started 5/7 games this year 22 tackles, 3 sacks 342 snaps (already eclipsed his Arkansas snap count).

DE- Ja'Quon Griffin (Coastal Carolina)- 61.7 PFF score 177 snaps but he only played five snaps against App State for some reason and has not started the last two games. Has 17 tackles no sacks.

S- Jordan Huff (ECU) 69.1 PFF as a backup, 96 snaps in six games.

QB- Taisun Phommachanh (UMass) 65.7 PFF with four starts with a break in the middle due to an injury. He is 66/102 passing for 788 yards with 3 TDs and 3 INTs. He has rushed for just 83 yards on 35 rushes mainly due to sacks, but two rushing TDs.

CB- Zamari Walton (Ole Miss) 62.8 PFF with six starts and 331 snaps. He has 19 tackles, one INT and two PDs. His PFF is almost 13 points below last season.

Not so good:

LB- Demetrius Knight (Charlotte) 53.6 PFF in 193 snaps with five starts, 33 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 INT for a TD, but just 50.3 tackling grade this season and 43 run D grade.

NT- MIke Lockhart (WV) 59.9 PFF in 221 snaps six starts, 14 tackles, 0.5 sacks.

RB- Dylan McDuffie (Kansas) 74.6 PFF (high) but mostly garbage time work, just 59 snaps this season. Decent stats 33 rushes for 180 yards and 3 TDs.

The Bad (not performing well)

WR- Kalani Norris (MTSU) backup WR with a 49.9 PFF in 149 snaps, 8 catches for 37 yards and a TD.

OLB- Khaya Wright (FIU) backing up at OLB and has played just 64 snaps in four games with a 55.9 PFF score. No stats.

The Bench (not in the rotation):

S- Derrik Allen (UNC)- finally played some defense against Cuse last week, 7 snaps at SS.

QB- Tucker Gleason (Toledo) just 63 snaps in two games this season, great game against Texas Southern, Western Michigan also a good game. 14/21 passing for 199 yds 4 TDs and 0 INT.

RB- Jamious Griffin (Ole Miss) 9 snaps in four games of offensive apperances. That's it. NINE SNAPS, he transferred twice to play nine snaps in six games.

DB- Jalen Huff (FAU) 22 snaps in three games including a start against Tulsa that ended with him playing just 11 snaps (injury or poor performance) 56.4 PFF and a 23.4 tackling grade.

WR- Ryan King (ECU) 32 snaps in three games zero catches and a 42 PFF score.

DT- K.J. Miles (Temple) has not played

QB- Chayden Peery (FIU) has not played

QB- Jeff Sims (Nebraska) has played one snap since the second game of the season in week four against LaTech. He is 20/34 passing for 220 yards with 1 TD and 4 INTs, plus 130 yards rushing for one TD on 30 carries but 4 fumbles. Eight turnovers in two games as the starter.

OL- Paula Vaipulu (North Texas) only playing on special teams. He not played an offensive snap yet.

WR- Jordan Yates (Sam Houston State) finally made his debut at receiver in the NMSt game this week playing nine snaps.

No longer on a team:

TE- Dylan Deveney (Pitt)- he is off their official roster without having played a snap there.

LIVE Q&A- Bye Week Edition, presented by Brett Cohee of Edward Jones Financial

Let's do this.

I'll go until around 10pm.

Before I open it up, just a few notes:

- I am told four-star WR Koby Young remains locked in on his Georgia Tech commitment despite several other schools attempting to re-enter the mix.

- Please Respect My (not really my) Decision Season is coming. Georgia Tech will be participating.

Post Miami Reactions

While on a fall break retreat to the Panhandle, I have been wearing my GT gear. Not surprisingly I have had so many people come up to me saying how glad they were GT won that game. There were a couple of exceptions where it was a fan of The U who would gripe about how they blew it. Regardless, there are a lot of closet GT fans out there. If we can start winning .consistently, I am convinced we can fill seats.
