THE FLATS – Making its first road trip under new head coach Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech travels to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats in a 7 p.m. EST contest Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Arena.

Tech began its 2023-24 campaign with three home games, capturing an 84-62 victory over Georgia Southern on Nov. 6 and a come-from-behind 88-85 win over Howard, 88-85, before dropping a 74-71 decision to UMass Lowell last Thursday night.

A first-year member of the Big 12 Conference, Cincinnati has won its first four games, all at home by double digits against UIC, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Washington and Northern Kentucky.

Wednesday’s game will be streamed live on ESPN+, also available on the ESPN app. Radio coverage is on the Georgia Tech Sports Network by Legends Sports and flagship station 680 the Fan (680 AM/93.7 FM). The Tech broadcast is also available on the SiriusXM app and SiriusXM channel TBD.

THE TIP-OFF

• Georgia Tech faces a Big 12 team for the first time since March 19, 2010, when the Yellow Jackets defeated Oklahoma State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. Since then, Tech has twice played Houston, also currently in its first season as a Big 12 member, in the 2016 NIT and the 2019 Diamond Head Classic.

• Cincinnati is one of five guaranteed non-conference opponents for Tech that won 20 or more games in the 2022-23 season, including four that played in the post-season. Mississippi State (21-13), Penn State (23-14) and Howard (22-13) all played in the NCAA Tournament last season, while Cincinnati (23-13), a new member of the Big 12, reached the quarterfinals of the NIT. UMass Lowell (26-8) finished second in the America East Conference. The Yellow Jackets potentially could play two more 20-win teams in the Diamond Head Classic, with a possible game against Hawai’i (21-11) in the second round and TCU (22-13) in the final round.

• Tech has played its first three games without two players expected to be significant contributors this season, senior guard Lance Terry who averaged 10.1 points per game a year ago, and 6-9 freshman forward Baye Ndongo, a four-star prospect from Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut.

• Tech’s four returning scholarship players - Miles Kelly, Lance Terry, Dallan “Deebo” Coleman and Kyle Sturdivant - accounted for 59.4 percent of the Yellow Jackets’ points and 56.5 percent of the minutes during the 2022-23 season. They collectively shot 35.6 percent from three-point range.

• Tech has a total of nine scholarship newcomers on its roster, five transfers who were judged the 17th best transfer class in the country by 247Sports, and four freshmen.

• Tech’s five transfers combined to average 37 points and 17.2 rebounds per game last season at their previous schools. They have combined to play in 263 games in their careers, and have made 116 starts.

• Kyle Sturdivant, a transfer himself from USC prior to the 2020-21 season, is the elder statesman on the Tech roster, beginning his fourth season. He is the lone player remaining from Tech’s 2021 ACC Championship team and has played 91 games (49 starts) in a Tech uniform.

SERIES VS. CINCINNATI

• Georgia Tech and Cincinnati are meeting for the 12th time. The most recent meeting was an 87-70 Bearcat victory in the 1996 NCAA Southeast Regional semifinal at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.

• Tech and Cincinnati met eight times as members of the old Metro Conference in the latter half of the 1970s, with the Bearcats winning five of the eight games. Two of Tech’s three wins came at home in Alexander Memorial Coliseum, the other occurred in the 1978 Metro Conference Tournament, which was played at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati.

• Tech is 0-4 in regular season games at Cincinnati, three of those at Riverfront Coliseum and the other in the teams’ first-ever meeting in 1926. Tech has never played at Fifth Third Bank Arena.

• UC associate head coach Chad Dollar, who has been with the Bearcats the last two seasons, was on the staff at Georgia Tech under head coach Brian Gregory five seasons from 2011-16, serving the last two as associate head coach.

FOOTBALL Kyle Efford earns ACC LB of the Week

Well deserved

LINEBACKER – Kyle Efford, Georgia Tech, LB, Dacula, Ga.

Efford posted a game-high 11 tackles and recorded a game-sealing interception in Georgia Tech’s bowl-eligibility-clinching 31-22 win over Syracuse. Efford's 11 tackles were a career-high. His first career interception came with 2:18 to go in the game to seal the victory. However, perhaps his biggest play of the game came in the third quarter when he and teammate Horace Lockett teamed up to stuff Syracuse on fourth-and-one from the GT 32-yard line, which gave Tech the ball back with its 24-10 lead intact. The big play proved to be instrumental later in the game when the Orange pulled within two points at 24-22. Efford led a defensive effort that saw Tech limit Syracuse to just 259 yards, nearly 100 yards below the Orange's 357.6-yard average this season.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Cuse commit Jamie Tremble shares thoughts on his GT visit with Gorney

After visiting Georgia Tech Saturday night for its win over Syracuse, where he’s committed, Tremble will be one to watch since the Yellow Jackets are pursuing him so hard and the Orange just fired coach Dino Babers. The pitch from the Georgia Tech coaches to the three-star tight end who had a big senior season was that he could catch passes and block in the offense and play only minutes from home.

“They also said it wouldn’t hurt that it was only 30 minutes from my house and it’s not freezing cold like New York,” Tremble said.

Softball Releases 2024 Schedule

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball and coach Aileen Morales have announced the 2024 regular season schedule, featuring 30 home games and four ACC series at Mewborn Field. The Jackets will host two non-conference home tournaments before hosting ACC rivals Pitt, Notre Dame, Louisville and Virginia.

Tech will also participate in the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational Presented by EvoShield (Feb. 15-18), a four-day tournament, in Clearwater, Fla., consisting of 16 of the top softball programs in the nation. Tech will play six games at the tournament to be broadcast on ESPN and the ESPN family of networks. The Jackets opponents for the weekend include three participants in the 2023 Women’s College World Series (Stanford, Tennessee and Oklahoma State) along with LSU, Minnesota and Northwestern.

Georgia Tech enters its seventh season under coach Aileen Morales, bringing back 18 returners from last season’s squad. Chief among the notable returners is the dynamic duo of right-handers in the circle, Blake Neleman and Chandler Dennis as well as the “walking web gem” serving as Tech’s vacuum in the middle, shortstop Jin Sileo. Also returning from a combination of last season’s regular starting lineups is a slew of Yellow Jackets, including third baseman Mallorie Black, outfielder Ella Edgmon, utility player Sara Beth Allen, outfielder Madison Dobbins, infielder Grace Connelly, designated player Emma Minghini, infielder Abby Hughes, outfielder Paige Vukadinovich and catcher Reese Hunter.

The stable of returners is bolstered by the Yellow Jackets’ recent recruiting class, composed of five highly-touted new Jackets. The class consists of three newcomers joining the collegiate ranks along with a pair of transfers in sophomore infielder Brionna Condon and graduate infielder Tiffany Domingue.

Morales will lead a retooled staff on The Flats in 2023-24 as she’s joined by assistant coaches Erin Dixson, Hunter Bunch and Kelsey Bennett as well as director of operations Deven Boland in prepping the Jackets on the diamond.

Ticket and promotional information will be announced at a later date.

FOOTBALL About next Sat nite...

This is the reason we need to show up as strong a possible next Saturday night.

Even though they'll be going up against an enemy with a vastly superior force (no shame in that), you better believe Brent will be going into this mutt game believing his kids have a chance to shake up the 🌎.

If you've been in BDS & on campus after a uga loss, you know it's not pleasant to say the least (😡) BUT WE OWE IT TO THE TEAM TO SHOW UP FOR THEM!!

If you can't be there do your best to make sure another GT fan is, else an empty seat is better than a mutt in a seat.

I believe God made hell for the devil and his angels and that no man needs to go. That said, my hate for all things uga athletics is irrational, thus I will be loud & proud yelling TO HELL WITH GEORGIA and supporting the Jackets on what could be a very difficult night.

The kids deserve it.
