FOOTBALL Brent Key pre-UGA press conference quotes 11/21

Really good win Saturday night and the team did everything we asked them to do and they weathered the storm and showed grit and toughness in the game. They were able to get the result they wanted to and I’m happy for those

Offensive Players of the Week:
Haynes King and Jamal Haynes

Defensive Players of the Week:
Zeek Biggers and Kyle Efford

Special Teams Player of the Week:
Paul Moala who forced a big fumble that lead to an early second half touchdown

Permanent team captains, 12 guys received 20 or more votes, all classifications from R-Fr to SRs, the four guys were named captains, Joe Fusile, Jaylon King, Dylan Leonard and Haynes King.

Key said he called each of the captains in individually and met with them one-on-one and told them the news and then he shared it with the team after practice today and it was a cool moment. He said he is excited about the leadership being built within the program.

Key said this is a big game because not only is it the next game but it is the in-state rival and you are playing for a State Championship and bragging rights for a year. A lot of the kids have played each other growing up and that is what makes rivalries like this one great.

On whether the pressure is off the team with the bowl win, the pressure is never off me and I hope it is never off themselves. Some say pressure busts a pipe, but it also makes diamonds and you grow under pressure. You thrive under pressure. I mean these kids are Georgia Tech students and graduates that is the world they live in (pressure) and the world they love.

On the three linebacker scheme carrying over to this week, it is personnel-driven and has to do with how many receivers are on the field versus tight ends and fullbacks. If you play three linebackers against 11-personnel and three receivers you’ve basically condensed yourself down to one maybe two coverages that you can play so we would not do that. It is all personnel-driven and each game for each team there is a game plan and a scheme that goes with it. I thought we did have some success with 3 LBs last week and it allowed us to play faster and we had three, four or five guys making tackles.

On beating UGA as a player, it is huge and it is tremendous. The feeling of winning that game and receiving the Governor’s Trophy, I put in my office for my guys to see it. We have two goals each season to go to a bowl game and to beat Georgia. We don’t come out and openly talk about what our goals are so last week I began to talk about going to a bowl game because it was time to talk about that. Another goal is beating Georgia. I said in my opening press conference a year ago we will work every day to beat the team on the other side of the state and that is what we are doing and that is what we’ve done. We’ve worked every day with that goal.

On if it bothers him to see the success UGA is having right now, “You are damn right it does.” He said that rivalry games are not supposed to be one-sided and it is their job to make the game competitive and that is what makes rivalries great. In order for that to be the case it needs to be competitive and that is on us at Georgia Tech. That is on us to go out there and be able to compete for four quarters in the football game. As far as selling it to the team, they have another opportunity to play a game against our rival.

On getting the players to believe they can win the game, success comes from believing you can have success. Individual success comes from believing you are going to play a good football game. Collective team success comes from believing you are going to win that football game. You can say all the politically correct things in the world and trip over your words, but at the end of the day, you go out to win football games. You play to win football games. When you believe you are going to win a football game you will have more success and will play well and when you don’t believe in that you won’t play well and that is the case individually and collectively.

On Buster being able to help prepare the team with his knowledge of UGA, “Zero, we’ve got every game they’ve played on tape this year and last year. That is not something that really takes place. They’ve got good coaches and they have good players right and you have good coaches and have good players and we are going to put together a game plan and they are going to put together a game plan, you game plan off film. Everyone thinks those things happen but they really don’t.

On Dominick Blaylock’s value to the team this year, “We brought in four transfer receivers last year I think and we knew offensively we had to increase our production and become more explosive as an offense. The quickest way to do that in college football is to have receivers that can spread the field horizontally and vertically and then have the right trigger man that can get the ball to them. Blaylock’s added value in the punt return game was big. It will be a big challenge this week and it has been great to have him. Dom is a great guy and he comes in and doesn’t say anything like he has his mouth plugged and just goes to work and to see what he has overcome in his career and for him to be able to have some success, I’m really happy for him.

I asked if he will bring up last year and how close they were from going up two scores in Athens, he said he would talk about a lot of things this week and he is just putting one log on the fire at a time.

Someone asked a crazy question about the kids not seeing Tech beat UGA in their lifetime, Key said there is a first time for everything in your life right, guess what I know what it is and I’m the head coach and they are going to believe as I believe.

On Kirby Smart’s compliment of the Tech OL, I appreciate Kirby giving that compliment but it has zero bearing on the outcome of this football game. We still have a long way to go upfront and we’ve got a big challenge in front of us this weekend. I’m proud of the guys and the way they’ve come around this year and the way they are playing together. Most of the great O-lines I’ve been around and had the pleasure to coach, no one is going to be perfect for an entire season or game there are going to be ebbs and flows within the game and you have to sustain and come back and play consistently whether it is overcoming a bad game or a bad series and then finish in the fourth quarter and I’ve been proud of how we do that.

On how he will defend Brock Bowers, Key said he is usually quick-witted about stuff, but he has no clue. Put three guys on him or put one person on him and cross your fingers and hope things will go alright. They’ll put together a game plan and UGA has had a lot of explosives as an offense this year 40+ plays of 20+ yards, 48 he thinks explosives in the passing game and they have two RBs that are very efficient and good that can take it the distance every time. They play a lot of condensed sets and play bully ball or spread you out with motions or unbalanced sets and they have a great play-action game. To focus on one person will leave you open to a lot of things so it is a big challenge this week.

I asked him if he has a fire and brimstone speech or anything special this week, Key said he is going to be himself and he is very comfortable in his own skin and comfortable with the way he motivates the team to get them to play. Every game is different and this is a very different game from the others.

On Calvin Johnson being at practice today, He just came out to watch practice and he wants guys who played here to be comfortable doing that and being a part of the family. He didn’t address the team or make a production out of it, we wanted to watch practice and afterward he grabbed a couple of the WRs and gave them a little bit of advice on a couple of things, technique wise or whatnot. It was great to have him out there and he wants him to feel like he can come hangout whenever he wants to watch practice.

FOOTBALL Georgia Tech football players talk COFH

Four GT players were available today thanks to school being out today.

Joe Fusile who hasn't been able to talk during the season due to class conflicts was up first.

Fusile said he was very honored to be named a team captain for the 2023 season by his teammates and given how hard everyone works it made it extra special for him.

Fusile said that Haynes King has become a leader on this team and he is very fast and they are grateful to have him here. He likes the way he acts and how he takes control of the huddle and in the locker room and that makes him easy to follow as a leader.

I asked him about the UGA, Fusile said, "I can't really say anything about it, it is clean, old-fashioned hate. We all know what it is, it is Georgia Tech vs Georgia.

On the rotation of Ethan Mackenny and Corey Robinson at LT next to him, he said that they are both good at different things, but Ethan being such a young guy it has impressed him watching him learn and grow throughout the season. He has good chemistry with Corey and it is always fun playing next to him.

On UGA's defense, Fusile said they are good up front and they what they do well and we are going to do what we do and go out there and expect to win.

I asked him about the increased workload this season playing almost every snap at LG, Fusile said that he spends some extra time with the trainer and making sure he takes care of his body after practice.

Fusile said that Kirby's quote about the GT OL is accurate.

Receiver Christian Leary was next and I asked him about what this week has been like given his experiences playing both UGA and in big rivalry games at Bama like the Iron Bowl, he said that he loves it. This one is new for him but seeing everyone's attention and want-to for this game is different. He said every week the attention to detail is good, but this week feels different and they are not worrying about any outside factors or anything that can affect us in a negative way. We are having a good week and just have to have the mindset that we are ready to win.

Leary said UGA is a good team and comparing them to last year, they are still a good team, but they just need to be ready to step up to the plate and play them. It is Hate Week and he thinks it is amazing to be a part of this rivalry.

Leary said that this year has been a growth year for him after not playing as much the last two years and he is finding his groove now and getting back into that playmaker mode has been fun for him.

Leary said of Haynes King, he is a great guy and a great leader of the team and he pushes everybody to have great energy and then on top of that he has great football abilities to match it and who wouldn't want to be around and play with a guy like that. He looks at the way King carries himself as well and he is trying to win the day. He makes mistakes but he is trying to win every game and he is a great leader and great supporter.

I asked if some pressure is off after getting bowl eligible and Leary said, "Coach Key, he just told us he thinks he is missing a couple of screws and he thinks we are too. We are fired up this week and we are glad we got the bowl eligibility but now they are trying to win this week."

Leary said he has felt all year this was a great team and they just had to put everything together and they are coming closer and getting on the same page now and even last week when they had a couple of struggles, they finished the game strong. He added, "Everybody hates Georgia and everybody wants to have some success in this game."

ACC Linebacker of the Week Kyle Efford was up next, he said getting some recognition for the Cuse game performance means a lot to him, especially with all the hard work he has put in. He said quite a few people reached out to him to congratulate him.

Efford said the Cuse game was the first time the LBs all as a group played at 100% as hard as they can and that is what they've been pushing for all year and they want that to be the identity of the LB room and the Darkside Defense.

Efford said that this is the state championship game for Georgia and that is what it means to him. He didn't grow up with a rooting interest in the game however.

I asked him if the game is clicking now that he has some many reps under his belt after not really playing as a true freshman last year, he said that game has slowed down a lot for him and he thought it was slowing down in week three and four and now he is really seeing things slow down. He said starting with the UNC game he really saw the connection between film study and preparation and that slowed things down for him even more.

Efford said he likes to put the last game to bed early and work on the next game and the team has taken that approach and it is becoming part of the culture under coach Key to move on to the next opponent the next day after you wake up after the game.

Efford said that UGA has an explosive offense that likes to spread it out and they have to limit the explosives this week if they want to have a chance.

Efford said this being the final home game of the season is not any different for him, he is trying to limit his emotions each week and keep his emotions in check regarding each game and stay calm-headed. He is excited however that they got bowl-eligible because it means two more games instead of one.

Efford said UGA has some good powerful backs and they love a good challenge and that is one of the things about being a Tech Man, you are not going to shy away from any type of challenge or adversity, that is what they live for.

Efford said his older brother went to UGA and they have converted him to a GT fan, he said his family are now all GT fans.

LaMiles Brooks was up next and Chad asked him about Carson Beck and if they had a connection, Brooks said that back in Jax the big QB rivalry was Jeff Sims and Carson Beck and he knew both of them and played 7v7 with both of them. Their high schools didn't play each other but he got to know him on the 7v7 circuit and played against each other that way too.

I asked who drew the short straw with Brock Bowers this week and he said that Bowers is an exception player and they have a game plan for him and a certain player will be matched up with him and hopefully, they can go out and execute that game plan that Coach Sherrer has in place and everything will fall into place.

Brooks said the secondary has made tremendous strides since the Louisville game when he got hurt early and they had all those missed tackles, they've gotten better at that and they've done a pretty good job of covering and they are just working each day to get better and stack days.

I asked him how he kept his cool in the Cuse game when it was getting so chippy out there and he said it was just a lot of competitiveness from both teams and he had a lot of respect for how hard Cuse players were fighting to win that game and emotions run high and tempers flare and that happens, but GT came up with the win and that is all that matters.

Brooks said of Rodney Shelley he is playing a bigger role and he played for the first time last year against UGA ironically. He has improved each week and he is a smaller guy but his coverage skills are through the roof and he can make big time plays when his number is called. He is excited to see what he will be capable of in the future.

Brooks said UGA has a good QB in Beck and Brock Bowers is a great player and they have some pretty nice RBs and WRs plus the OL is pretty good so it is another high-powered offense they are facing another SEC offense as well so it is not something they haven't seen before this season, it will just be a little extra physical play and a little bit faster so they have to be on point.

I asked if he has taken any pleasure in being part of square one of the rebuild and now getting to a bowl game and he said it feels great. He came in and they went through a lot of trials and tribulations and to see it start to pay off now and see where the program is at gives him a lot of hope for the future of the program and what it is capable of in the future and he is glad to be a part of that kind of rebuild to get the program going again.

Brooks said he expects UGA to run the ball until they stop it and that is the kind of game UGA likes to make it and he feels like they have a good game plan and they have to stop them now.

I asked about how the transition has been with Coach Sherrer and he said that was definitely a change and transition period with him taking over playcalling and there were changes in calls, but also changes in who was on the field and they had to get comfortable with those changes and now everyone is doing their job and understands their job and are not doing things that are outside of what is expected of them and that is paying dividends.

I asked if their prior success hanging with teams either now in the top 25 or top 25 teams they beat this year helps going into this game and he said they expect to win every game they play regardless of anything else. That is the confidence they have and that has been growing all season and there is a natural boost of confidence that comes from winning those games and guys believing in themselves and the whole team has to believe.

Wear White /Gold only!!

I know this has been mentioned in other posts - but I have been to many UGA / GT games over the years and believe that it would be extremely encouraging to our players if they could easily see just how many Tech fans are there. With our fans wearing varied and often dull/ dark colors it looks worse than it is.
I ran into a GT fan this morning who had a blue Tech jacket on. He said he was going to the game Saturday and I said “don’t wear blue!”. He looked baffled; when I explained, he said “sure, I can do that!”
My point is: we are a different breed (thank goodness) and made up of independent minded folks. But I think if we get the word out and ASK and encourage, people will respond. I am a bit older than most folks on this site, so I am not media savvy at all, but I can share and retweet (reX?). Since the AA won’t do it, can some of those who are on this site help spread the word?

POLL: In-person Live Q&A in Woodstock?

Based on the responses yesterday from @WRECKPT @Ghettobuzz2 and several others, it seems there is a good amount of interest in doing an in-person Q&A.

Next steps will be determined after the results of this poll.

HOOPS Stoudamire provides updates ahead of Cincinnati

Just two of us Chad and myself for Damon Stoudamire's Monday media avail ahead of the Cincinnati game. None of the GT media are traveling for the game due to it being Thanksgiving Eve on the road during Hate Week.

I asked Damon about going on the road for the first time and going against a good Cincinnati team, he said they are 4-0 but he isn't worried about Cincinnati right now. He is really concentrating on his own team. He said they need to limit turnovers and win the rebounding battle and if they do those two things they will have a shot to win and they have to do that every game. He said they need to be better in transition on defense as well and that is his primary focus right now. Cincy has really good guards and they pressure the ball. He said he has been working with the team to understand the scouting reports and how Cincy will play in the half-court and they'll get specific at times but he wants them to stay within their normal preparations and have the same approach to every game and that is what he is trying to teach them.

Damon said one thing that has bothered him so far is the inability of the team to push leads out when they get up on teams like in the last game against U-Mass Lowell they got up seven and didn't deny a high-low catch that was defendable and broke their scoring streak. He said little details like that bothered him. He said how the team plays when they are up 6, down 6, or up 15, the details in those moments are big for him and preaching that it is a one-possession-at-a-time game and a next-play mentality. He said the crowd will be an interesting factor in this upcoming game and he also said he doesn't like the loose ball turnovers that turn into fastbreak baskets. He said throw the ball 30-feet into the stands before you let someone steal it from you because at least you can set the defense then. (Seems like he was displeased with some of the ballhandling).

I asked him how to get Miles Kelly going earlier in games and just overall and he said it is about efficiency with Miles. He is being inefficient with his scoring and dribbling too much. He said sometimes he takes three dribbles when he should take two and pull up and shoot the ball or he needs to make a pass when he is forcing a shot. He also said he jogs at times when he needs to run and runs when he should be pacing himself by jogging. Miles has to work on his efficiency overall on the court. He said he is more worried about how poorly the team is starting overall than the slow starts Miles has had. He said they can't start a game down 10-2 as a collective group.

Lance Terry is still out, no timetable for him yet. Baye Ndongo is day-to-day now and he hopes he is ready to go for Mississippi State worst case scenario. Sounds like Baye might play Wednesday if he is okay.

I asked him about Deebo Coleman's role and he said he views Deebo as the sixth starter and he doesn't want to mess with the rotation yet and change the starting lineup. He likes the energy that second group (Deebo, Kyle Sturdivant and Ibrahima Sacko) are bringing off the bench and he wants to keep that going. He said that Deebo is having his best season statistically and while he would probably like to start, he doesn't want to mess with what is working. He said Deebo is playing smarter and bringing it off the bench and doing a great job and he wants him to continue that going forward.

Stoudamire said he has not changed much with the road game plans for the team. He said he is a guy who loves road games because it limits distractions and you get a chance to bond more as a team so he likes going on the road and it is a better experience in some ways for coaches and players. He said they will cherish those times on the road together more down the road and you go into a gym with one common goal.

I also asked about his two new signees,

Jaeden Mustaf, "he is a downhill guy, he does a really good job of getting downhill and getting contact and finishing through contact. He will be a really good on-the-ball defender for us and I'm a big strong guard so he checks a lot of boxes."

Cole Kirouac, "I think Cole will be really good for us. He has the length and he has the size you want. He is going to get stronger, but he can finish with both hands and I love his ability to block shots. I love his ability as a big to change ends of the floor so I'm looking forward to having him on board as well."

Fan's Keys to the Game

Curious to see how everyone would approach the game Saturday. Here is how I would do it.

Offense - possess the ball. Will need to win TOP and keep UGA offense off the field and keep them from establishing any rhythm. From watching some of their games this year, when they are getting stops on D and their offense gets in rhythm it gets tough to stop. GT will need to run the ball and I think Haynes needs to be a part of this the whole game. Not just the 4th quarter as we have seen the tendency to happen. He is going to need to be sharp on his RPO game and not afraid to pull it and run depending on the DE's. The offense controlling the game will help the defense. We can take shots, but need to pick our spots. Need Haynes to take what they give us. She may not be the prettiest thing at the bar, but take the fat chick in the flat if that's what is there.

Defense - Be aggressive. Cheat the safeties up. UGA attacks the middle of the field a lot. Bobo likes those slants and drag routes to Bowers over the middle and their WR's/TE's can run after the catch. Our CB's need to be jamming routes off the line. Need to take away the middle of the field. Beck will slice us up if we allow them to hit the zones. If we get beat outside, fine. Beck's deep ball isn't very accurate. Need to force that. We can't be passive and "try to keep it front". Their athletes are too good for that.

FOOTBALL AP Poll continues disrespect for ACC (bottom team for every 'loss' category)

Question re GTMBB vs State Penn at MSG

I purchased tickets to this game back in October b/c my wife and I will be in NYC that weekend anyway and I’ve always wanted to see a game at MSG. Got an email confirmation of the purchase from GTAA that said I would receive another email “closer to the game date” with my tickets. But when I log into my ticket account and look at My Upcoming Events it says “you don’t have tickets to any upcoming events.”

Just making sure I’m not missing something here, as I would expect my account to at least show I purchased those MBB tickets even if the tickets aren’t ready yet. Curious if anyone else bought tickets to this game and if you see the same thing on your GTAA account.

Do we have a chance against UGA?

KQ- There is always a chance. It would take a perfect storm of events to win the game, but they can hopefully replicate last year's effort and make it a game at worst. UGA is really rolling right now so it will be interesting to see what happens, but I'm not overly optimistic of some earth-shattering upset.

What do you know about our overall NIL situation? Mostly pertaining to football.. Has it improved this year? Is it a big priority for Batt and Tech as a whole right now?

KQ- It has improved and they are working on it all the time. Batt is actively suggesting people donate to NIL and pushing that as a key piece of building up the foundation of what the GTAA will look like over the next 5-10 years and using things like Competitive Drive to backfill money lost via donations dollars that are being focused on NIL. People will donate to both, but they want to increase the NIL money and make it more functional. As the teams improve that should create opportunities for more NIL sponsorships from companies and take some of the pressure off the common donor.

Do you think GT would benefit from running a base 4-3 scheme (like last night) over 4-2-5 (in vogue rn) with the lack of stud line backers you’ve mentioned. Instead of finding the best two, just add another. Our run defense certainly seems much worse than our secondary play.

I know we tried the 3-4 and maybe that would’ve worked with Biggers back then with Groh. But another body at backer instead of trying to get two studs out there all the time might be a better option?

I know there are coaching changes to consider but it seems that we are best when running a regular old 4-3 (Wommack, Tenuta, Roof)

Putting 4 lineman with hands on the turf (attacking) and 3 linebackers to hold the run.

KQ- No, who is going to cover a slot receiver in that set up? You can't play one-high safety all the time and have the other safety try to cover Nate McCollum or Xavier Restrepo with a pure safety all the time or Braelen Oliver or whoever you line up at SAM. That isn't going to work. You will get torched. Most of the teams Georgia Tech plays are primarily 11-personnel teams so your base can't be a 4-3. The former HC and former DC still on staff both ran a 4-3 at their former stop. They tried to figure it out too, it just doesn't work.

You have to get better at linebacker and you saw last year it works fine if you are solid at LB.

Making a bowl. Is it bigger for the fanbase or recruits? I have seen so much improvement in this program that I felt things were looking way up regardless, but I know a huge portion of our fanbase has Post Traumatic Geoff Syndrome. Russell said making a bowl would really turn recruits heads, especially when it came to staying home.

KQ- It is a little of both. They need proof of concept to sell in recruiting and they have that now. Fans want to know the program is headed in the right direction and want to believe in something, but the used car salesman stuff wore out a chunk of the fan base and Key will have to win to draw them back in.

It is a net positive for both.

The non-targeting targeting hit on King. WTF? Was there any more explanation from the ACC that makes that make sense? I mean, we’ve all seen enough targeting calls against defenders who clearly weren’t trying to target the offensive player, but officials don’t take intent into consideration they just decide if the play meets the technical definition of targeting. If the Lockett hit on King didn’t meet the technical definition of targeting (forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder) I don’t know what does.

KQ- Everyone was shocked by it especially because the review was called for by the replay official who buzzed down to the field. I would be curious to hear what the head of ACC officiating had to say about it.

What is your bowl projection KQ?

KQ- I think they end up playing Rutgers in Yankee Stadium. I think TV views that as an interesting matchup and there are not many logical other opponents. The two teams haven't played since 1921 either so I think that would make it interesting. I would love El Paso or Fenway or Yankee Stadium.

Does this win do anything to the mentality of our HC? I could see his emotion in the immediate post game interview so he had to know how big this was for him to solidify himself as a GT HC for the foreseeable future.

KQ- He knew how important it was to have the proof of concept of what they are trying to do and that he needed to go bowling in one of his first two seasons so it takes some external pressure off Key and I think that helps him. Also he really wanted it for the kids and the staff and the fans.

Question on all defensive recruits committed thus far. Are they “committed” to the defensive staff?. I see Key getting a new DC. If he gets decent money for a good DC, the whole defensive staff would most likely change. Will this help, hurt or both in regards to recruiting?

KQ- More of an RJ question, but the main ones who have a particularly close bond are the NOLA guys that Ricky brought in so that is not really connected to the offense or defense.

Is Singleton having a hard time with something? His performance is not up to his usual level of play. This is been happening since UVA and even during that game had some problems

KQ- He clearly had an injury that caused him to miss the Bowling Green and he has been somewhat limited since then per my sources. I think whatever is going on has impacted him a little with his hands. He and Chase Lane both need to get healthy. Hopefully, they will be for the bowl game.

One more question: Any way Tech can erase Dec 2018-Oct 2022 from the record books?

KQ- Win and it turns into the story that I've hinted at where Collins becomes Bill Lewis, a sad footnote that helped bring about a new day for the program and some consistent winning over an extended period through multiple HCs.

Maybe inappropriate to ask while the stepson is still going but can we get your top 3 DC targets you would reach out to if you were Key?

KQ- I assume you mean season. If you are going to replace Kevin Sherrer which I'm not sure is the case or not yet, I think my first call is to D.J. Durkin at Texas A&M who has been very successful and is also an excellent recruiter and LB coach. I might look at Shiel Wood who was on staff CPJ's last season as DBs coach who is at Tulane and has them rocking and Chris Hampton at Oregon who is the Co-DC there who was a GA here under CPJ and was Tulane's DC the last few years as well. Hampton is a very sharp guy and is on track to become a head coach somewhere. Ironically I tried to convince CPJ to hire Hampton over Lamar Owens when Jeff Monken left and just let the dude coach A-backs because I thought he was a sharp dude. That conversation didn't go well for me. LOL

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Another new 2024 in-state name to follow

Dougherty RUSH Maurice Davis is climbing up the board for GT in a hurry following his decision to decommit from Ole Miss recently.

From what I have gathered, Davis is hoping to stay closer to home. He is going out of town this week for the holiday, but is likely to be on campus soon for an unofficial, and from there is likely to take an OV in the coming weeks.

He has not received an offer yet, officially, but I have seen and heard enough from talking to my sources to put him on the offer list.
