We’re less than a month out from Josh Perry’s decision. What’s your gut saying?

KQ- I assume you mean Josh Petty and got autocorrected. My gut still says FSU, but I know GT is still working hard to close that one. I hope to have a little more info on that this coming week.

In 2022, we scored 5.4 ppg in the 4th quarter. Last year we were 9th in the country with 10.2 ppg in the 4th. Is this attributed to Buster getting better and better as the game gets deeper?

KQ- Well the 2022 offense was dreadful at times because of the QB issues and injuries there so it is hard to compare. I think some of it is second-half adjustments by Buster and the offensive staff (something missing since CPJ left) and a lot of it was Haynes King being more willing to run the ball downhill in the second half of games and impose his will on the ground. When he did that it opened up the entire offense so much more.

Is James Forest’s staff position of special assistant to the head coach an administrative position only, i.e., no coaching, recruiting, or on sidelines during games?

KQ- GT has all of their coaching spots taken, there are 5 now. So he won't be coaching and doesn't have the experience to jump into that role. Can he help with other stuff? Yes. Can he recruit off-campus? Not unless Damon pulls one of the three people allowed to recruit off campus off the road. He isn't going to be doing Damon's paperwork either. That role is typically more of an advisor/ambassador-type role. I can ask Damon when I see him or talk to him soon about how he envisions that role.

Tech has transfers from different levels of football and from conferences (for example Ivy League) with different outlooks for their athletes. Do any of the portal transfers have a difficult time assimilating into the Ga Tech program? Is it the talent level or adopting Key's culture or both that is the toughest part for the transfers?

KQ- That is an issue across college football and not limited to GT. I think a guy like Jack Barton who transferred in and then left from Furman was just overmatched physically at this level and it wasn't going to work out. I think Jackson Hawes will have a great season for GT and he came from Yale so that isn't really what determines that. I think there are some kids surprised by the academic piece and you've seen some of them have to work hard to overcome obstacles like Ahmari Harvey for example and others who didn't and have left already who I won't mention. For transfers the fit, the culture and the level of play are all considerations and sometimes it doesn't work out which is why Thomas Gore is here for example after going to Miami which wasn't a fit for him.

Is there a list of the folks on GT's NIL committee? I believe I know 2 of them, but wanted to see if this is public knowledge or flies under the radar?

KQ- No, they keep most of the NIL Collective stuff buttoned up. Most business people are not exactly interested in becoming overly associated with spending money on college athletics like that outside of the ego-driven types like Shapiro at Miami. The majority of major donors for collectives are quiet about it.

I was thinking about the upcoming UNC matchup this year. My understanding is Key doesn’t hate his predecessor like the GT fanbase, but I was curious if Key has any extra motivation for his offense to do particularly well that game. Wanted to get your thoughts.

KQ- I think the fans have a very different view of Geoff Collins than Key or many people including myself. I think Key saw him for what he was and was trying to help his school with an eye toward the scenario that played out if things went poorly and Collins couldn't pull out of it. Key actually loves GT, but he has moved on once he got the job full-time. He coached his ass off for Collins though and was in tears after the loss at UCF that got Collins fired ultimately because he was so frustrated by the loss. He wants GT to win. That is his main driver. He will occasionally get a kick out of a funny GC3 story, but he always says he is looking forward and not backward.

I know you generally don't get involved in the laundry topic, but do you have insight into what we are doing with Adidas? It seems like we communicated clearly we want better treatment or we want to look elsewhere with our half in / half out 2 year agreement.

My understanding has been that the driving factor for GT has been athlete gear not fan stuff or general marketing awareness and branding, if that is true do recruits care that we don't have the newest template or the wordless logo? Additionally, is there any real performance impact to our athletes from material science etc? The black jerseys in a hot, humid day game was stupid but was that us or adidas who did that?

I am particularly interested in if you think GT AA wants more from the team's apparel or not. If we haven't been doing it well do you see JBatt making improvements? It seems wild to me that we have all this internal knowledge on material science and are not a leader in the field (see speedo's polyurethane Olympic swimsuits which were outlawed for bringing an unfair buoyancy benefit). Same thing to a lesser extent with Ticketing Process / queues in the stadiums for food and beverage, etc. Let's use those process engineers to go full fix-sigma ham on the problem set and be the best KQ org in the country.

KQ- For those who were following along at the time, I kind of said I expected GT to resign with Adidas in a short-term deal because the market dynamics are no longer there for massive payouts for schools, GT wasn't in a position to negotiate from a power position given how bad the sports were during the majority of that deal and that was the best business decision for GT not knowing the dynamics of the marketplace or even where the ACC or college sports will stand in 24 months.

I have no idea if they want more apparel or not or how it sells or how much of that is on J Batt's radar. I can tell you winning sells more jerseys and having full stadiums and arenas sells more gear and will make Adidas or whoever GT has a deal with sell more stuff. The athletic piece has to give people a reason to be proud to wear and buy more gear too.

As far as recruits go, NIL is way more important now than who you are aligned with for shoes or clothing.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Juan Gaston

I’m sure this has been addressed, just curious why we were never in it with him. No help from Pop? Not crying over it, just wondering. Hope there isn’t bad feelings with Juan Sr and his GT time here. And I know just because the Dad played for a school doesn’t lock in the son…

In Search of a Finance Related Job

Hey y’all. As the title suggests I’m eager to start my career in finance/ finance related, however I’ve had zero luck in finding anything, even entry level jobs.

I graduated from GSU in spring 2023
B.S. Economics

I have basic knowledge in accounting/finance.

What’s killing my chances is the lack of experience. I didn’t do any internships in college because I was so focused on finishing school.
Short of just walking into these companies with resume in hand, I’m low on options.

Any opportunities y’all have, connections, or just advice would be greatly appreciated.

This was a tough pill to swallow but I figured I would exhaust all my options.

Thank you!

Christo Lamprecht

Christo made his first cut today since joining the Korn Ferry Tour this year. He shot an eight under 64 which was the low round in the field today and finished the day in 3rd place. Highlight of the day was going 5 under on the 4 par 5’s with drives of 380, 380, 396, and 394. He also drove onto the green on one par 4 and was within 40 yards on 2 more. A strong final 2 days could put him well on the road to earning his PGA card next year. I’ll be pulling for him.

FOOTBALL Tech’s Powell-Lee Nominated for AFCA Good Works Team

Yellow Jackets DB honored for work in the community

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech defensive back Clayton Powell-Lee (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake H.S.) is a nominee for the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the American Football Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes college football student-athletes for their unwavering commitment to community service and good works off the field. From the 178 nominees across all levels of college football, 22 student-athletes (11 from NCAA Division I FBS and 11 from Division I FBS, Division II, Division III and NAIA combined) will be named to the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in September. The team is selected by a voting panel of former Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists.

New in 2024, the AFCA has partnered with the Wuerffel Award to bring together two of college football’s most meaningful community service awards. The Good Works Team member chosen as the FBS student-athlete that best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on the field will be named the winner of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, which will be announced during The Home Depot/ESPN College Football Awards Show in December.

Powell-Lee has been one of Georgia Tech football’s most active student-athletes in the community since his arrival at Tech in 2022. The initiatives that he has participated in include 404 Day of community service in the Atlanta community, Salvation Army Volunteer Day, representing Tech at the Black Student-Athlete Unity Summit in Los Angeles and the 2023 ACC Unity Tour in Washington D.C. and leading the creation of the student-athlete chapter within Georgia Tech’s African-American Student Union.

Georgia Tech opens the 2024 season on August 24 versus Atlantic Coast Conference rival Florida State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Kickoff is set for noon ET and the game will be televised live on ESPN. ESPN’s College Gameday will air live from Dublin prior to the game, marking the first time college football’s most recognizable pregame show will originate from an international location.

Dalen Penson on3 “freaks” list

On 3 did a list of “freakiest” recruits in the 2024 cycle and he was listed at #15/25 in the article. Pretty cool to see us getting on those types of lists. Talks about his track ability and speed. Love what Key and the staff is doing with this class!

Q's Site Update 7/14

Greetings everyone,

I wanted to give an overall update on where things are with the site now about two weeks out from Russell retiring from the recruiting writing business and media days in full swing.

On the recruiting/staff writer position, I will be conducting interviews this coming week and hopefully will have a decision shortly after that and someone in place by the first of August or thereabouts. I wanted to take some time to think about what I want from that position, talk to some different people in the business, and bounce ideas off on how to grow that position as well as position myself to make the site the best it can be over the next several years. This is a lot different than when I brought Russell on board as he was initially hired as a part-time freelancer and we worked together to grow that into a bigger position. This time I am looking for a full-time person so I want to be sure about my hire and that fit and the role.

The timing worked out okay because we are in a dead period until July 24th, then a quiet period for one week, and then another dead period for all of August except in the 48 hours before a home game which only comes into play ahead of the Georgia State game.

Conference Media Days are coming up. I'll actually be at the SEC one for two days this coming week in Dallas because no one else who works for me wanted to go to Dallas in mid-July (shocker). Then I will be at the ACC one in Charlotte on Sunday with GT going on Monday and then the team should report on the 23rd and camp should start up on the 24th but we do not have a media schedule just yet. That usually comes out at the ACC Kickoff or just before. My assumption is it will be similar to last year's Fall Camp with a bunch of different avails and a few quiet days mixed in. The good news is GT starts classes on August 19th so the team will have an extended fall camp basically gaining a week by playing week zero through August 17th and then sliding right into game mode. That will give Brent Key and his staff time to work with the players and start game planning ahead of the 20-hour rule that limits practice and meeting times once classes are in session at a school.

We will provide our typical top-tier coverage of fall camp as usual.

I'll be in Ireland for the game as you all know. I'm looking forward to meeting many of you there or seeing many of you again for the first time in a while.

On the video front, I'm recording another look back with a former GT player on Monday and you should see that probably on Tuesday or late Monday night as well as doing an interview with the ACC Nation guys again on Monday, but I'm unsure when they will upload that one. I'll be cranking back up the video content and probably aiming to do things twice a week in the season. I have one other cool video lined up as well for next week that will be a fun surprise that many will enjoy (not interviewing CPJ, something different).

I'll be launching our usual GoFundMe tip jar for travel tomorrow. That is always helpful as last year we hit another all-time high on travel expenses and that comes straight out of my pocket and I still cannot raise prices on here so it is a good way to help out the site if you enjoy what we do and can spare a few bucks.

Thanks for supporting us and I'm very excited about the future of JOL,

KQ
