FOOTBALL Scrimmage Notes and Quotes 8/3

They went for about 3 hours today. We spoke extensively to Brent Key after practice for almost 27 minutes about the scrimmage and some other topics. I'll keep this to the scrimmage itself.

Key said they did some pre-practice individual work and then scrimmaged and followed that with some situational football like 3rd downs and driving the field at the end of the game. Right at 160 plays today and last year they were shooting for 140 and only got 126 last year done. He said at 125 this year guys were staying off the ground and were fresh so they were able to finish it up.

Somehow I didn’t realize Brett Seither only had 7 catches last year. Obviously the offense was loaded and Benson and Leonard were NFL caliber TE’s.

What is a realistic expectation for Seither this season as the top TE in a loaded offense again?

Yep he was on a pitch count every game and they used him in key downs mostly because his back was so messed up at one point he had spinal fluid draining or something like that as the story goes. He is a very talented TE, him and Jackson Hawes should be very effective weapons, Haynes King has to do a better job of finding them on plays, he often missed open TEs and forced balls into double coverage. I think you could see the two primary TEs in the 40-50 catch range this year. Dylan Leonard and Luke Benson were at 24 I think last year and then Seither in the red zone and on third downs had the other catches. I think you will see at least 4 TEs play regularly with Josh Beetham and Ryland Goede getting mixed in and probably Avery Boyd as well some there flexed out.

Coach Key at the Capitol

I was catching up with a friend from high school who now works at the state capitol, and he told me a story about Coach Key coming to meet all the everyone there. He also mentioned that kirby has never made an appearance.

One of the Senators made a joke about uga beating up on GT the last few years and Key got very serious and replied with something like “that stops now. Those days are over” my buddy and all the senators were very taken aback by how serious and intense coach Key was. He is not a fan of the Jackets but was very impressed by Coach Key. Exciting times are ahead! I can’t wait to be in Ireland in 3 weeks!

OT: Thrivent Commercial

Watching the Olympics on NBC and a Thrivent commercial comes on. It’s a football coach and he’s running players through drills in a football stadium that looks familiar. I’m pretty sure it’s Bobby Dodd Stadium and AJ Artis the S&C coach but not sure. It has some players in it too. I may be completely off but pretty cool if true. No GT branding tho so that’s a bummer.
