FOOTBALL Couch Coach vs. VMI

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. VMI. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

Mission complete. We came out and took care of business. Cleaned up some things from the previous week and were able to get the backups game reps

giphy.gif

Something that has not been as clean the last 2 weeks is our zone run game. Here we have outside zone to the weak side. Me personally, i would’ve like King to check this run to the strong side(to the offense respective right) bc i don’t like the leverage the OL has on the defense here. You have defender in the box outside shoulder of the left tackle that appears not accounted for plus penetration inside by the DT. Im not an OL specialist, but i think Brown should come off that double and try to reach block that edge defender. Gotta be better at our bread and butter

giphy.gif

We need this same type intensity every game. Harvey is in a deep 3rd. He has no vertical threats, so he settles & read the routes combo. This is how you drive on the ball and make play on 3rd down behind the sticks

giphy.gif

It only takes person to turn a TD into a TFL. We have everything we want here on this Inside Zone run. We need #54 Jordan Williams to be an athlete. Williams comes off the double team and appears to take a bad angle toward the 2nd level defender. If Jordan just simply get in the way, Haynes is running off his butt and into the end zone untouched. Instead, it’s a lost of 3yds

giphy.gif

See how easy plays can be made when you drop in the proper area. Good play by #44 Efford on the HB screen

giphy.gif

Good to see us get reps on vertical passing game. Both WRs running deep over routes. Appear to have a coverage bust by VMI, good throw by King
giphy.gif

A classic Cov 3 beater with both inside receivers running verticals. QB is reading the safety rotation. The QB will throw to the opposite side of wherever the deep middle safety rotates. I really believe if Boyd consistently catches the ball, he will be a huge miss match problem for every team on our schedule

giphy.gif

The biggest revelation in the game was how well off we are at RB. Seeing Carrie in the open field moving fluidly and instinctively transferring the ball to the outside arm mid cut was cold that i had to clip this.

FOOTBALL Brent Key media avail 9/17

ATLANTA- Georgia Tech football coach Brent Key spoke to the media on Tuesday as the Jackets prepare to face #19 Louisville in a rematch of the Jackets' season opener last year. Despite having played more games than any other team in college football to this point, Key said his team is the healthiest it has been since the season opener in Ireland against FSU.

"I feel very comfortable. I think we've been banged up but this is probably about as full go as we've been in the last three and a half weeks," Key said of the team's health. "We still got nicks, bruises, and bumps, but that is football and the nature of the beast."

Key said that safety LaMiles Brooks who was dressed for the VMI game but did not play is a full go this week, but running back Trey Cooley who has been out since the FSU game is still out this week.

---------------------------------------

On the VMI game, Key said they were able to play a bunch of people and get the young guys some snaps who earned that right through how they have been working. He said that is big for the young guys to have both those successes and failures on the field and learn from them because playing on the practice field is so different from playing in a game.

They plan to continue building depth and getting younger guys ready to play.

He thought they played a full 60 minutes on Saturday and that was very encouraging for him. He challenged the team to play well from start to finish last week and they did that.

Key said this week they face a very talented Louisville team on the road and Jeff Brohm does a great job not only coaching and developing his team but also as a game manager as well. Key said it is fun to coach against other coaches like Brohm with his strategy and gamesmanship within the game. He said it is a fun opportunity and fun challenge for himself as a coach. He has a good football team and they recruited well and he does a good job of developing his players and like Key he is coaching at his alma mater so he knows how much winning means to him and trying to have success every day.

Key said this is a very different offense than what they faced from Syracuse, they are balanced in the run and use four running backs that they feed the ball to and they are explosive players and they have explosive receivers on the outside. They have big physical offensive line and tight end group. It is a pro-style offense in a lot of ways but they have adapted the college game to some of the spread elements. They can line up with two backs under center and run or in the shotgun spread out and empty sets. Key said it is a different QB and some different personnel this year so they won't be watching a lot of tape from the game last year.

Key said that the game last year was the epitome of inconsistency where they scored 0 in the first, 28 in the second, 0 in the third, and 7 in the fourth, and trying to become consistent is the goal and the mindset they are working towards. They need to be able to sustain for 60 minutes.

Key said the LB spots they feel like they have a two-deep now and some young guys are doing a good job. He said he wished they had a bunch of guys with four years of experience. He said Tren Tatum has been the best version of himself for the last couple of weeks. He thinks Jackson Hamilton being able to come in behind him and play some has helped him play faster by keeping him fresh. Key said the development of Tah'j Butler has also been big and seeing his improvement.

Taye Seymore has been another young guy Key has been pleased with. Key said it is cool to see the smiles on their faces from those young guys when they play well and are improving week to week.

On Louisville's D, Key said that they have to be efficient on offense and running the football and he thinks they've done a good job throwing the ball and they've got to protect the QB and can't have turnovers. They have 19 TFLs and 9 sacks in two games. They need to hit on some explosives as well. This is a championship week every game moving forward and that is how the team has to approach it.

Key wasn't aware of Governor Kemp's executive order on NIL.

I asked about RB depth and Jamal Haynes being banged up and he said they don't have a guy who can carry it 30x game and most teams don't so you need 3 guys at minimum and really five RBs that you are comfortable playing because you are an ankle and a helmet coming off from #3 going into the game. It is the most physically demanding position in a collision sport.

HOOPS RECRUITING Hoops Scoop 9/16 visit season in full swing

Georgia Tech hoops starts fall practice shortly and Damon Stoudamire and his staff have a busy visit schedule with both OVs and unofficial visits.

A big man on campus

McVey had a great visit to Georgia Tech. The Jackets have been an early favorite to land the talented big man who is upping his game now at OTE Elite.

Tech had a pair of unofficial visitors as well

He is from my high school and is an interesting combo guard type who would fill the position at the end of the bench as a developmental player in the long term.

Top 2026 local kid

GT are still working to get either

On Wilson, it seems like Arkansas is still the favorite then UK and GT is third there. He would be giving GT a hometown discount to come, but that speaks a lot to his view of the GT staff they are even in that mix with schools throwing 7-figures at him.

I'm less sure about where things stand with Tiller. Tiller was at Auburn this weekend with Bruce Pearl. He visited GT on the 30th.

Easter OV'd last year to GT and Chatfield seems to be the guy they are locked into. Still digging into this.

Are critics of this win required to wear Bike shorts, tobacco stained shirts and tube socks while they yell about keeping it real?

KQ- Yes

Since we have now hit 4 games, could we get a freshman redshirt report? Thanks!

KQ- Yes, working on that, there are some discrepancies between what PFF is reporting and GT's participation chart so I want to check on it this week and then hopefully have something up later in the week.

Ok- we’ve now seen enough games to see some sort of separation in teams. How does everyone look to you ? Is the seat hot for Mike Norvell?

KQ- So I have not watched Pitt play or much of UVA yet since they are not on GT's schedule. FSU is bad, Wake is bad, Duke is bad and there are a ton of teams in the middle bit including GT and then probably Miami and Clemson up top probably. I think the middle bit is pretty wide open, Miami is always a wait-and-see approach and Clemson hasn't been themselves for several years.

I think it would be foolish to fire Norvell right now. I don't think that is going to happen.

Bigger advantage going into next week in your opinion: GT, who has played two P5 teams and two weaker teams, battle-tested but beat up or Louisville, who has played two nobodies, well-rested and a bye week to prepare but hasn’t been hit in the mouth yet?

KQ- I think GT has more to draw on in times of adversity where Louisville has been in total control of their games so far so that is a slight edge. GT is more beat up which is the flip side of that however.

You think we get Linton or Walker? Which one do we have the better chance at?

KQ- Probably neither to be perfectly honest. Linton has a lot of stuff going on and Walker hasn't actually decommitted and I haven't seen UGA offer new RBs. If they do that then I'll think something is up.

What do games like the VMI game tell us if anything?

KQ- They won, handled their business and worked like pros at it. That is what you want to see from these games and what CPJ in his era did all the time. VMI is not good, but they didn't let them move the ball until the threes came in.

Is the Notre Dame game this year last one in the Benz. If not how many more.

KQ- I do not know where that stands. There has not been an announcement about extending the deal, there hasn't been an announcement about which GT game would be in the Benz either.

Nice to meet you today, Kelly! Who on the Louisville team should we be aware of and why?

KQ- Great to meet you as well. They have four RBs who have all put up numbers in the two laugher games and a portal QB Tyler Slough who has 6 TDs and 0 INTs with a 68% completion rate. On the defensive side, they have as many sacks as GT through just two games, Tramel Logan who they picked up from USF has 3 as a DE and they have a DB/LB hybrid Tamarion McDonald who has two sacks that was a Tennessee transfer. Those are the main ones.

Seems like every QB except Graham Knowles got in the game yesterday. Is there any update on Knowles or is it simply that Philo is progressing faster?

Also, I didn’t see Shymeik Jones get in the game. Any update on how he is progressing in practice?

Thanks for the coverage Kelly!

KQ- They wanted to get Brody Rhodes in the game so he got whatever snaps that Graham Knowles would have. Graham is the 5th banana at the moment, but they are pleased with his development so far, Philo is just ahead of him.

Shymeik Jones played like 10-12 snaps, you can check the PFF, he did fine when he was in there. It was good to see him get some reps.

Do you think Maddox will start to get more playing time or are we going to try to save him for next year? He looked good yesterday

KQ- You don't save RBs with redshirts, that isn't really a thing at that position. They still get banged up practicing or on a scout team so you might as well use them and ideally they want four guys. That is where they are at, Jamal Haynes, Trelain Maddox, Anthony Carrie and Chad Alexander. That was the goal going into the season. Daylon Gordon would be the next man up behind them.

Do you see Maddox and Carrie both burning their redshirt with the way they are producing?

KQ- Yeah as I said above, I think that Key is not big on redshirting guys who are not OL/DL players or a QB.

In your opinion what is the RB pecking order? After yesterday it looks like Maddox is #2. Is that because they are super high on him or trying to get a bigger back in the game because the other dudes are smaller. Just curious. I love them all so I don’t really care as long as they are productive

KQ- It is so hard because VMI was so overmatched against Maddox. I think you want to see how they all look against ACC opponents and go from there. Key is big on practice performance so that will be a huge factor.

With all the money in the sport right now and after these first four weeks of action, it seems the coaching carousel will be spinning early and often each year as teams aim to give investors a ROI. Please understand, I’m not concerned about this at all and I think it works out well for GT whenever it may happen, but in your opinion, to what level does Brent have to take GT to consistently before his name starts popping up in the carousel?

KQ- I get what you are saying. I think consistently being in the hunt for the ACC for two years puts him into the conversations for things like Florida if that were open. He isn't going to be a sexy pick in that scenario but that isn't always the way things play out. I don't see him being interested in the more dead-end SEC jobs. He knows how hard South Carolina or Arkansas or Miss State are as jobs. He has coached and recruited against all of them for many years. I am not sensing a Bill Curry vibe though, I know GT fans are concerned about that on some level. I think it would take something very special for him to ever consider leaving GT and let's not put the cart before the horse, there is a lot of work to be done between now and then.

I’m enjoying seeing mason start for the 49s and even juanyeh thomas returning kicks for the cowboys. Who on this team do you see getting drafted this year? Do you think anyone has the potential to go in the high rounds with great production this year?

KQ- Jackson Hawes and Avery Boyd the two TEs are the first two names that popped into my head. Romello Height, Zeek Biggers, Jordan Williams and Weston Franklin will all get looks as well depending on how they perform at Pro Day. Kevin Harris is another one who is kind of freaky like that too. Chase Lane seems like a longer shot, but he has looked pretty good so far at GT when healthy so if he can put together a consistent season he becomes interesting to me. Not sure on the Warren Burrell, Ahmari Harvey, and LaMiles Brooks group.

Do you think Wake Forest paying 1 million to back out of next years Ole Miss game is bad for the league?

KQ- I think it is a bad look for Wake Forest, but Ole Miss sure as hell backed out of playing GT when CPJ was here so they don't exactly have a lot of room to talk. That is why those games were played during the GC3 era.

HOOPS RECRUITING Full update story on Marcus Gillespie...

Now in the class of 2026 and apparently really likes Georgia Tech. Has had a slow start with offers coming in, but that should ramp up soon.

HOOPS RECRUITING Just talked to Marcus Gillespie...

Will have full story updating his recruitment up tomorrow, but a couple interesting takeaways from the interview...

-He is strictly at OTE now and not playing for Clarke Central.
-He is reclassifying to the 2026 class since he is relatively young for the 2025 class and will have more time to go through the recruiting process.
-He really liked his time at Georgia Tech on Saturday. He said he watched the team go through morning practice, and he liked the energy and style of play. He mentioned really feeling a connection with Coach Stoudamire, Coach BJ (Elder) and Coach Pershin (Williams).
-He said he has a lot more to go with his recruiting with visits and such in the near future, but he could definitely see himself playing at Georgia Tech in a couple years.
