at the link below. Check it out when you have a few minutes, I know sometimes they cut up these highlights to only show you that (the highlights), but this kid looks like a stud. Strong, accurate arm. Physical runner with speed. Runs offense similar to Tech's with RPOs, read option, vertical passing game. I can see why the Georgia Tech coaches really like him.

When i talked to Andy Mac last fall, as head coach at Sewanee he was happy. Wonder if $$ tighten up at that level if he would be interested in a dc role at a bigger program. He was in buffale and really wanted to come south.

He really called clown car coaching brought to gt by Collins.

And both of you called J Thomas as a safety while i wanted him to try olb. Doing well at the Cowboys .

Andy had an dye for talent and could recruit.

KQ- Andy is a great guy. We still talk and text several times a year. He seems happy running his own ship up there and having people just playing for the love of the game and his staff coaching for the love of the game. It is not bad living up there either.

There was a really cool play against Louisville where Malik caught a jet touch pass and it looked like he had the option to throw it back to King on a screen. Malik ended up keeping it, but I was wondering if we will see the playbook continue to open up with more unique plays like that. Though it was a clever design.

KQ- Yeah that is a throwback option play, that is one way to do it, or you can throw behind the LOS to a back motion out of the backfield behind the QB and he can have that option or you can do quite a few other things. Buster seems to have a few wrinkles each week as part of the package for the game and he saw something probably with over pursuit on the jet-motion that could've opened that up. Both Eric Singleton Jr. and Avery Boyd threw passes on trick plays last year.

I used to be a full time sports fan and watched almost all sports. Now, with the players having their own platform to say what they want about anything with pretty much no repercussions or being able to break the law and still be able to participate in ways a normal person would be under the jail has pretty much tuned me out. Seeing the UGA players still play and the WR Rice for KC play are a few examples of law breakers that should be really not even with the team until resolved. What’s your take on situations like that?

KQ- So the NFL is different from college. The NFL has unions and policies that for lack of a better word police what clubs can and cannot do and that is collectively bargained with the players' association so there is a minimum threshold that has to be cleared to suspend someone or whatever else. Andy Reid certain hasn't been known for running the tightest ship in terms of off-the-field stuff both with his players and unfortunately with his family as well where there has been quite a bit of tragedy.

On the UGA thing, they gave up the idea of appeasing people with suspensions long ago. It has always been a little wild over there and there are other programs with issues which aren't on our radar because they are not GT's most hated rival, but I covered all sorts of depressing shit there like rape trials with players or the guy who got kicked off the team for stealing from students or DUIs/car shit going back a long ass time since I've been doing this for over 15 years now in the GT side. It ain't changing. Alabama had their own insanity last year with a DB caught with dealer level drugs and speeding away from the cops in a car chase. There are going to be dumbass people in the 17-24 age bracket and the lower the barrier to entry to the school or the greater focus on winning at all costs, the more likely you will end up with some serious legal shit down the line.

I think caring about what an athlete says is dumb. I don't care what their opinions are for the most part unless it is something truly awful like a Nazi-loving POS or something of that nature or someone cruel to animals or women or children. Short of that, just tune it out, unfollow them or just ignore it.

What do you hear about the development ofLB- Caleb Dozier? We need LB help but I do t hear anything about how he is doing. Are we going to be in the transfer portal again for LB help? We still lack LBs in the incoming class.

KQ- He is on the scout team, I would be a little surprised if he plays this year since he may have dressed once in the first five games for VMI (I think). That is usually a sign that a guy isn't that close. Austin Dean and probably the walk-on Jack Collins would be ahead of him playing right now. That's not saying he won't develop, but I would be a little surprised to see him get any game reps soon.

Always interested in your assessment of injured players at his point in the season. Which players in the normal two-deep do you expect to be unable to play vs Duke?

KQ- I'm not really sure how to answer that as I am not interested in giving Manny Diaz my injury report on the Jackets a week before the game. There are a couple of guys I expect to miss the Duke game and a few guys I expect back like maybe we will finally see Horace Lockett play. I am unsure on guys that Key has talked about publicly like Trey Cooley and where things are with him. Safety Jayden Davis is another guy I'm curious his status (has had his arm in a sling at the last two home games) and Josh Beetham who got banged up in the last game at Louisville.

Do you think we will be trying to mix things up on the O-line, considering our inability to run block recently?

KQ- Probably. I was told by a reliable source that Ethan Mackenny has been banged up and should be closer to 100% and that would allow them some flexibility there. I've thought Corey Robinson II has looked good when he has played but as Key talked about he was banged up in spring and fall camp and came into the season not 100% so hopefully maybe he is ready there and Harrison Moore continues to develop that would give them some solid options on the left side at both guard and tackle to rotate with Jordan Brown and Joe Fusile who have been struggling. I know Fusile hasn't been 100% either as he had some type of wrap on his shoulder so hopefully he has healed up and looks more like the reliable LG who played all of last year.

I’ve got a conference alignment question my friend wanted to ask. How long do you expect Stanford/Cal to stay in the ACC?

KQ- Until the GOR expires. They aren't leaving for the Pac-12 who are offering 1/4 of what the ACC payout is from TV at best.

Going into the second half of the season who do you see as someone on both sides of the ball who’s moving up the depth chart and expect to see more playing time (someone who’s playing some now and someone who hasn’t seen the field much)?

KQ- Trelain Maddox at RB is clearly someone they want to fill the Dontae Smith type role, but they need to open holes for him to do that. Bailey Stockton is a guy that Buster loves and he basically replaced Christian Leary all-around as both the #2 slot and now as the KR since Leary left. He had already taken the slot job which led to Leary bouncing IMO. On the D side, Tah'j Butler seems like a guy who will be hard to keep off the field and I think Taye Seymore has made a really strong case to stay on the field as well at one of the safety spots. Rodney Shelley will be interesting to watch at the nickel because he is good when he is good but gambles a lot as well, he has played better than the other two guys there Syeed Gibbs and Omar Daniels in coverage.

Dark horse breakout player for second half of the year (a la Dontae)?

KQ- My gut says Trelain Maddox on offense and Tah'j Butler on D.

Any news as to our kicking game getting squared away?

KQ- They don't have a lot of options. There is a reason why Aidan Birr is kicker #1.

Any kickoff time prediction for Notre Dame?

KQ- Well Stevie Wonder just announced a concert at State Farm that night so that will add to the level of shit show that could be if the game is a night game. My assumption is TV will be interested in the game so I have no clue. It could be in any of the slots.

Not sure if this has been covered already, I missed it if so, but wondering what’s up with Lightsey at LB. We all respect Efford’s work ethic and just about everything he does except the fact that he’s a major liability in space. He routinely gets picked on in the passing game, evidently the opposing OC’s eyes light up when they watch our tape. I think we’ve done pretty good against the run but you need LB in base that are adequate at both. And surprisingly I still see Efford out there in nickel. Anyway, I thought we’d see more of Lightsey and maybe others. Curious to hear more about the LB situation and whether we’ll see more players out there soon. And specifically about Lightsey, it feels like I’ve missed something about him.

KQ- I think this might be the 100th time I've answered this since the Ga State game, but Lightsey was injured and not dressed and has been out for a bit with an undisclosed injury. I don't think it is a season-ending injury or anything like that, but he wasn't available the last few games so that is why he hasn't played. The other thing is Lightsey has missed a lot of time now with injuries both in spring ball and fall camp and Jackson Hamilton and Tah'j Butler are both playing pretty well so he has to earn his way back into the rotation if he wants to play more.

The base defense is essentially a nickel look, are you talking about the 3-3-5 or Dime packages when they sub down because normally the middle LB stays on the field on those downs and is usually there to stop the run or blitz or spy. They sometimes drop into coverage. Tah'j Butler would be the guy in that spot and not probably Lightsey if you wanted someone other than Efford.

GTVB: Tech Falls to No. 1 Pitt

Jackets come up short in front of another sold-out crowd

Box Score | Season Stats

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball (8-3, 0-2 ACC) couldn’t keep up with No. 1 Pitt (12-0, 2-0 ACC) on Sunday afternoon, falling in three sets: 25-11, 25-17, 25-8.

QUICK HITS

  • This was the 35th consecutive sold out match at O’Keefe Gymnasium, a streak dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Sophomore right side Larissa Mendes led the team with 8 kills. She becomes the third Yellow Jacket with 100 kills this season (107), joining Bianca Bertolino (124) and Tamara Otene (141).
  • Junior middle blocker Anna Boezi set a season high with two blocks, despite playing in only one set.
  • Junior middle blocker Liv Mogridge made six kills. She finishes the weekend with 10 kills on .438 hitting.

SET BY SET

Set 1 (GT 11 – Pitt 25)

The Panthers came out strong in the opening set, winning 17 of the first 20 points and holding firm for a 14-point set victory. Mendes led the Jackets with three kills.

Set 2 (GT 17 – Pitt 25)

The Jackets responded well to start the second, going in front 7-4 thanks to a pair of kills from Otene and a block from Mogridge. The momentum couldn’t be sustained though, with the Panthers tying things back, 8-8 and eventually taking a 16-11 lead later on in the set. Tech never managed to work its way back into the match, eventually losing the set by eight points.

Set 3 (GT 8– Pitt 25)

Pitt kept the Jackets uncomfortable in the third, winning 21 of the final 25 points to end the match.

UP NEXT

Georgia Tech returns to the practice courts before the second weekend of ACC play. The Jackets will travel to Notre Dame on Friday at 6:30 pmbefore facing yet another ranked foe, No. 5 Louisville, on the road, next Sunday.

The GT Transfer Report Bye Week Edition

As always I like to look back at former Georgia Tech players and see how they are doing. I'm going to focus on the kids who left the program for this past offseason only. We are pretty far removed for the Jordan Yates, Jared Ivey, and Jamious Griffin types of the world playing that extra covid seasons at other schools.

GREAT

DT- D'Quan Douse (Michigan State) Douse wanted a change of scenery for his final year after graduating from GT and got a nice offer to go to Michigan State. He has been the Spartans starting DT like he was here and is playing pretty well 71.8 PFF score overall and has one sack. GT basically traded two years of Jordan van den Berg for one of Douse so I think that worked out better for GT.

Edge- Kyle Kennard (South Carolina) thanks to outbidding a lot of teams allegedly, South Carolina landed Kyle Kennard way above market value. He has been the same guy who makes plays for both teams there with two critical mistakes that helped the Cocks lose to LSU and some highlights as well. He has equaled his sack total from a year ago 5.5 in just four games with a PFF of 75.3 but he was also the most penalized DL in the country with 4 in the LSU game already. Kennard had six last year that wiped out multiple sacks and were drive-killers. He has to figure out how to avoid those mental lapses because he has NFL potential.

S- Kenyatta Watson II (Georgia State) Kenyatta has played well enough at Georgia State, I kind of thought he might be an All-Sun Belt type dude moving down to that level but so far that hasn't been the case. He has started two of three games with a 79.2 PFF score in 130 snaps. Hopefully, he can keep it up.

GOOD

S- Sirad Bryant (UAB) Bryant was a headhunter who struggled to play within the confines of the defense and didn't get to play a lot because of that here. He is playing a lot with one start at UAB and a PFF of 65.5 and 26 tackles playing a box SS for the Blazers. He is a guy who is from a different era IMO and would've been a helluva safety back in the 80s/90s. GT tried him at LB and he couldn't figure that out either so he made the right choice to move down a level.

Edge- Noah Collins (Arkansas State) Collins was Kyle Kennard and Kyle Harris's backup last year here, and he is still in a backup role in Jonesboro. However, he has one sack and a 66.9 PFF score in 71 snaps in limited action off the bench for the Red Wolves.

WR- Juju Lewis (FIU) He wasn't in the mix here, but has become a solid backup WR for a bad FIU team. He has 5 catches for 93 yards and two TDs this season in 72 snaps over four games off the bench.

DT- Etinosa Reuben (UMass) The former Clemson player was not very good here and he moved down essentially two levels to fringe FBS at UMass and he is playing well off the bench for the Minutemen with 7 tackles in 84 snaps and a PFF just under 80. He finally found the right level for himself.

NB- K.J. Wallace (UCLA) Like Douse, he did his time at GT/ND and wanted to cash in for a fun SR adventure opting to go to the West Coast. Wallace has been solid enough 61.1 PFF in three games starting at nickel for the Bruins. He has 12 tackles and 4 passes defended.

OKAY

DE- Jack Barton (UConn) transferred in this winter from Furman and left after not making the two-deep at DE for UConn. He has started all 4 games, 9 tackles, He has a couple of QB pressures and hurries, but a PFF score of just 53.0 this season.

WR- James BlackStrain (Missouri State) he moved down to the FCS and has stayed healthy but is a backup WR, he has 6 catches for 81 yards this season in just 89 snaps over four games. His PFF score is 60.7.

OT- Wing Green (Campbell) Green stayed and finished up his degree at Tech not playing football last year before transferring to Campbell and he is a backup OL playing decent snaps with a 58.9 PFF in the FCS.

LB- Ashton Heflin (Marshall) Heflin was a victim of staff changes and Kevin Sherrer wasn't a big fan and they wanted to get bigger at LB so he left for Marshall where he is playing well in a backup role with a high PFF 84.2 in just 24 snaps with his primary role similar to GT on special teams.

LB- Tyson Meiguez (Murray State) Meiguez was hampered by injuries his whole time here impacting his development. He is starting for the Racers in the FCS and playing well 57.3 PFF in just under 200 snaps as a starting LB.

CB- Eric Reed Jr. (Southern University) he is another guy who had all the skills, but couldn't put all together. He is playing well at Southern University in the FCS with a 67.1 PFF in 184 snaps as a starting CB.

NOT PLAYING MUCH

OL- Gabe Fortson (Tulane) Fortson was the odd man out in the Harrison Moore/Tana Tupuola-Alo battle for center spots in the spring behind Weston Franklin and he didn't fit in at guard either so he opted to transfer to Tulane. He has played 11 snaps this year as a backup for the Green Wave in a blowout win against Southeast Louisiana.

OL- Tyler Gibson (Charlotte)- Tyler lost his backup OT job last season and barely played after showing some potential as a true freshman. He isn't starting at Charlotte who are terrible so that is a bad sign for a guy in his third year of college. He has played 16 snaps on a team that is getting blown out regularly.

QB- Zach Gibson (Ga State) Zach Gibson had a nice redemption arc in the 2022 season after struggling as the starter to help beat UNC and hanging with UGA in his last two games of real action. He was QB3 a year ago behind Haynes King and Zach Pyron and he went to State hoping to start, but couldn't beat out Pitt transfer Christian Veilleux. His lone snap this season came against GT when Veiileux had to leave the game for a play.

DE- Eddie Kelly (Missouri) unfortunately I called this one, Eddie allegedly got lured into the portal by some teams looking for DE depth and is second-string at Mizzou now but is getting paid well. He has just six tackles this season in 70 snaps. He would likely be a potential starter here.

OL- Jakiah Leftwich (UNC) Leftwich left the Tech program looking for a bigger role after starting some games and being the backup right G/T last year. He has played just 58 snaps this year at UNC with a 52.3 PFF score at LT and RT.

BAD

OL- Elias Cloy (Alabama A&M) this was a pretty quick parting of ways as he didn't fit into GT's future plans and ended up down two levels. He is starting but not playing well as the center for the Bulldogs with a 35.8 PFF score through two games.

Edge- Ezra Odinjor (UAB) Odinjor is one of the backup pass rushers for the Blazers and is playing a lot but has not been very good. He has six tackles and a PFF of 42.6 in 68 snaps.

DT- Ayo Tifase (Charlotte) Came to GT from FSU with high hopes and he did not last six months on the Flats before bailing to Charlotte. He has played only 12 snaps this season in one game for the 49ers who are desperate for talent.

NOT PLAYING

S/WR- Justin Brown (WKU) He left Miss State to transfer to GT and then hit the portal again this offseason ended up at WKU where he has not played yet this season.

DT- Bryston Dixon (South Alabama) He was a late take and one that did not make a ton of snaps once he got on campus and was compared to other players on the team so he left. He hasn't played yet for the jaguars.

CB- Steven Jones Jr. (Murray State) Jones is a big CB who couldn't crack the Jackets rotation and left for the FCS.

DE- Malcolm Pugh (LaTech) The young DE hasn't played yet for the Bulldogs.

OL- Paul Tchio (UMass) the former Clemson and GT OL hasn't played yet for the Minutemen.

INJURED

CB- Kenan Johnson (Utah) Kenan had some major non-football personal things that impacted his time at Georgia Tech and hopefully he is in a better mental place now in Salt Lake City, but unfortunately for him he got hurt in the open game of the season for the Utes and played just 13 snaps as a starting corner before going down for the year with a lower leg injury.

"There's definitely something not quite right right now with the team..."

Since I don't have a Braves/Mets game to watch right now, I'm re-watching some of the most recent Overreaction Sunday video. @Kelly Quinlan made the quoted comment in the thread title a little over halfway through, talking about how the team lacked energy in warmups for the Syracuse game, and I'm assuming similar observations were made on the Louisville trip. I've been trying to decide between three culprits what our biggest problems have been in the two losses that should have been wins: poor execution, poor coaching decisions, or lack of motivation/energy.

After watching and reading @ibeeballin's analysis, we definitely had poor execution issues in the UL game, and there were several against SU also. Brent's coaching decisions in the two losses have been discussed here in depth, and I think we can all reasonably see that he is an inexperienced HC who still has the program moving in the right direction but is growing and learning. Hopefully what they say is true that he's his own biggest critic and he will continue to work hard to get better and not be a barrier to the team's success.

That leaves the motivation thought. Please don't tell me that most of our struggles thus far have been between the ears of our players (or even worse, our coaches). Let's be honest, our players, coaches, and fans alike behaved like the win in Ireland was a bowl game victory and the season was over, Waterford crystal trophies and all. Thankfully we came somewhat ready to play against GSU because it was sold as the "Battle for ATL" and GSU's "Super Bowl", but then we have two ACC road trips and we "lack juice" and seem dead. Other than blaming Delta for flight problems, what gives? I'd love to believe that CPJ's belief that players should be self motivated and should bring their own energy is still valid in today's game, but I'm thinking those days have past. Kirbs had his players wearing t-shirts that said "Nobody Cares" during offseason workouts just a few weeks after winning the natty a few years ago. Fran B makes up some BS objections to Brent's comments and gets his kids to play with juice in his first conference game as a HC, and at least in part, it worked.

Please don't tell me that because we won a treasure chest (Gasparilla Bowl) and some Waterford crystal in Ireland in consecutive games that we somehow thought we were somebody and we had gone from rags to riches in warp speed. I know Brent talks a lot about consistency. How do you create consistency in the motivation/culture aspect of the team? I don't want Brent to have to mimic Kirby or Fran, I think GT can do better than stupid gimmicks or mind games, but I'd love to hear thoughts on how we get this part fixed. We have no reason to be "full of ourselves" as KQ said in the video. GT football is always at its best with a chip on its shoulder. How do you cultivate that mindset consistently?

HOOPS Transfer Javian McCollum to Join Tech Men’s Basketball

High-scoring guard earned HM All-Big 12 honors last season at Oklahoma

THE FLATSJavian McCollum, a 6-2 guard who earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors last season at Oklahoma, has signed a grant-in-aid to join the Georgia Tech men’s basketball program. He’ll have one season of eligibility with the Yellow Jackets.

McCollum started all 30 games in 2023-24 form a Sooner team that went 20-12. He scored a team-leading 13.3 points per game while hitting 40.4 percent from the floor, 31.4 percent from three-point range and a school-record 94.3 percent from the foul line. He also dished out 102 assists, second on the team. The native of Fort Myers, Fla., made a program-record 39 straight free throws at one point during the season, and scored in double figures 21 times.

“Javian’s ability to create shots and make plays is what I love about him,” Stoudamire said. “He’s fearless, and he’s a leader. Javian and Nait creating for their teammates and playing off each other will be essential. Good guard play wins games and I feel I have two of the best.”

He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors at Oklahoma after averaging 12.3 points and 3.1 assists in conference games. McCollum was named MVP of the Rady’s Children’s Invitational in December after scoring a team-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting against Southern California in the championship game.

Prior to joining the Sooners, McCollum played two seasons at Siena College in Albany, N.Y., where he averaged 11.6 points and 2.9 assists over two seasons and hitting 37.5 percent of his three-point tries, playing in 51 games while starting 27. He became a regular in the Saints’ rotation in 2022-23, averaging a team-high 15.9 points and 3.9 assists while connecting on 35.6 percent from beyond the arc.

McCollum joins a team bolstered by a recruiting class that includes high school prospects Cole Kirouac, a 6-11 center from Cumming, Ga., who attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., his senior year,Jaeden Mustaf of Bowie, Md., a 6-4 guard who also attended Overtime Elite, Doryan Onwuchekwa, a 6-11 center from DeSoto, Texas who attended Faith Family Academy of Oak Cliff, and Darrion Sutton, a 6-8 forward from St. Louis, Mo., who attends Overtime Elite in Atlanta.

FOOTBALL PFF Numbers through five games compared to the 2023 season

I thought this would be interesting

Here is the story from the bye week last year through six games if you want to visualize it better

FOOTBALL Couch Coach vs. Louisville

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. Louisville. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

The margins of error in today’s CFB are probably thinner than ever. The difference of being 5-0 & Top 25 vs 3-2 is a couple of plays. This lack of margin may heighten the level or urgency and make the decision making “wishy washy” for a coach like CBK. Today will be offensive centric

giphy.gif

giphy.gif

One of the few times we caught Louisville defense not playing sound. Here is QB Split Zone where we catch Louisville having 2 defenders in the same game. King shows off his 4.4 speed for the TD. Great job by #85 sealing the MLB

giphy.gif

Right read, poor execution. Better yet correct read, better play by the defender. Here on the RPO, we see King decides to pass it outside after the defenses collapse on him . This is just a great instinctual play by the safety. If this is completed, we are talking about this as one of the best plays we’ve ever seen on offense. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of two
Non offensive TDs for Louisville

giphy.gif

It appear this was a CBF wrinkle of the week. Gun Quads. All it is a numbers game. They have 4v4. Slot guy motions and no one follows then it’s a give here. I need a better effort from Hawes here. He’s blocked too well this yr to miss a block on a DB. Make that block, now you have your athletes in space 1v1. I like those chances in those situations

giphy.gif

It feels helpless seeing us send a lot of pressure and not get home. Here we have a cover 0 blitz. (No deep help) The number 1 rule for cov 0 is to not get beat to your inside. #23 Tobe does a poor job of giving up his inside leverage and also not getting a reroute on the WR to disrupt the timing of the route so the blitz can get there.

giphy.gif

Our run game has been significantly hurt by our G-C-G ability to not handle our opponents slanting and stunts. Here we run an inside zone. Louisville runs TEA stunt where the DT engages first and the End loops inside. Franklin engages on then play side double team but imo, he should peel off and get a piece of the looper, instead we have an unabated rusher to the ball carrier

giphy.gif

No Brent Baby, what is you doing? Totally inexcusable! If he was wanting a measurement as the announcers presumed, then so be it, but under no circumstances do we take a delay here. We just looked scatterbrained here.

giphy.gif

Good job by the DT on reading the screen and oh good job Butler being there as well.

giphy.gif

We give so many fake key read plays that sometimes I’m not sure if there is read element to or not. This could be QB power or this could be read play. If it is a read play, then we missed a walk in touchdown if we tossed it Jamal Haynes

giphy.gif

Execution! Execution! Execution! Man coverage. We have to start running pick/ rub routes like our opponents have against us! Singleton has to do a better job making the CB covering Lane to either change direction or slow down. Do either and this is a TD as i don’t believe the DT in zone wouldn’t tackle him
