FOOTBALL Q's Take: Emotional loss adds fuel to Key's fire to build up GT football

So much happened last night in Athens and seeing how emotional Brent Key was after the game and seeing him and his reaction to losing a game in 8 overtimes that probably should've never made it to overtime was interesting. Like most of you, I haven't really slept much either. I got home at 3:40 am last night from Athens.

I was on the field for UGA's final scoring drive in regulation through all of the eight overtimes. I spent much of that time standing with President Cabrera, Key's family and the GT people on the sideline. At one point, Cabrera said, "We are seeing history." They were all bought in. J Batt was a few feet away as well living and dying with every possession and play in OT.

This one hurts more for Georgia Tech fans than any game in recent memory as it should. They have multiple chances to put Georgia away despite all of the officiating non-calls and everything that happened in overtime.

Key was absolutely devastated but as I expected this morning he is more driven than ever to get Tech over the hump and start beating Georgia again. Key told people if you think I was a maniac before, just wait...

Tech caught the attention of the college football world last night despite not coming out on top. That is a potential program-turning moment for Key even without getting the win. Recruits, other media and everyone saw them play toe-to-toe with big bad UGA. Even UGA folks were shocked and impressed with Georgia Tech.

The reality is in the 4th quarter Tech's roster issues started to show as well. They were down to playing the emergency CB Warren Burrell who wasn't even supposed to play after Rodney Shelley and Zachary Tobe got knocked out of the game. Carson Beck took advantage of those shifts in personnel. The lack of a big powerful running back or even a Dontae Smith was big in the 4th quarter as well. They need to find a hammer to balance out the quicker backs and that has been an issue throughout the season.

This was not a team that should be going to eight overtimes with a top 10 team or beating two other ones on paper, but Key and his staff along with the players did just that going 2-1 in those games and breaking FSU in the process.

The building up of depth and creating a sustainable and deeper roster with more talent is the end game for Key and his staff and that starts next Wednesday with the early signing period and the Jackets' top 20 class that they will aim to add some cherries on top of over the next week.

This one hurts for anyone who cares about Georgia Tech, but the rivalry is a real rivalry again with UGA. I was talking to Mark Schlabach last night and he said that was the best GT-UGA game since 1999. The entire UGA beat all said they think Georgia Tech is back, hopefully, that is the case and this was the 1997 GT-UGA game that Tech lost on a last-second TD pass from now-UGA OC Mike Bobo to Corey Allen. Tech then won three in a row from 1998 to 2001. This hurt because Tech was the better team Friday night in Athens, but at the end of the day, the scoreboard was 44-42.

Be proud of your team, let the pain fuel your love of the program and support.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Another installment of Following the Future...

As several Georgia Tech commits continue their quest for state titles while others saw their high school careers come to a sudden end...

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Recruiting Updates?

Signing Day is on Wednesday and it seems quiet on the recruiting front. I know most of that is due to the heartbreak from last night, and some due to the class being mostly wrapped up I’m sure.

1. Do we expect any more decommits other than Hasenhuetl?
2. Any updates or RBTL for Wednesday? Do we expect any additions to the class? Any hat show victories?
3. Do we land any of Joseph, Smith Jr, Braker, Haynes, Marshall, Crim, Zelus?
4. Any visitors on campus tomorrow since it’s the last visit day before signing day?
5. Does the class stay in the top 20?

FOOTBALL Bradley’s Buzz: Tech shouldn't beat UGA, but does Tech know that?

I believe we can win on Friday. I will be glad we had a good season if we finish at 7-5, but not content! 8-4 will make me content & estactic! Go Jackets!

Here is Mark Bradley's spin.

"This is the first time since Smart's first season that I foresee a competitive game. If we've learned anything about these Jackets, it's that they'll compete.
With the degree of difficulty involved, Tech folks would be content with a 7-5 season. Should this team somehow get to 8-4, it wouldn't just be remembered fondly. It would be remembered forever."

Georgia Tech folks will remember this season. To bleed seven wins – including two major upsets and three last-gasp victories – from a stacked schedule, and to have done it despite a significant injury to its most significant player … well, who could ask for more?

Um …

Let's be clear. Tech shouldn't win in Athens on Black Friday. But what if it did?

The season began with the Yellow Jackets facing Florida State – this was when FSU was expected to finish first, as opposed to last, in the ACC – in Ireland. Tech won on the final snap. Two weeks ago, Miami and Cam Ward rolled into town unbeaten. Tech led for the final 42 minutes.

Tech isn't ranked – it received one vote, that for the 25th spot, in this week's Associated Press poll – but it's a team nobody wants to play. The Jackets are clever. The Jackets will fight you. They're rotating quarterbacks, which never works, but it worked against Miami and did again Thursday against N.C. State.

Haynes King can run but, owing to an iffy shoulder, can no longer throw downfield. The freshman Aaron Philo – who was supposed to be redshirting and maybe still is – has become the designated chucker. He ran three times on Tech's final drive against N.C. State. The results: first down, first down, game-winning touchdown.

Even in a season that saw a bad loss at Syracuse, a not-great loss at Louisville and King-less drubbings versus Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, Tech has kept the faith. Much of that is due to Brent Key, the alum who became the coach and who has, without offering soliloquies about "branding," branded this as a rising program in a league where anything seems possible.

Does "anything" include beating Georgia in Athens? Probably not, but the Bulldogs have had issues, too. If Tech could get ahead – several opponents have gotten ahead of Georgia – might it control the clock by mixing Philo throws with King runs? It might. Could it keep that up for four quarters? Unclear, but it would be fascinating to see the Jackets try.

Tech last beat Georgia in 2016 on Qua Searcy's improv leap. The Bulldogs are going for a seventh consecutive victory against their neighbor. That would match their longest streak of running this state, previously achieved in the 1990s and again in the first decade of this century. Since 2000, Tech is 3-19 against Georgia – though all three wins came in Sanford Stadium. All were under Paul Johnson, who enjoys them still.

It wasn't so long ago that we wondered if – not when, but if – Tech would ever again stare eye-to-eye with Kirby Smart's Georgia. Last year's installment marked the first time since 2016 that Clean Old-Fashioned Hate ended with a single-digit margin: UGA 31, GT 23. Was that a sign of a closing gap, or was it a one-off?

The Jackets aren't great at defending. Both Miami and N.C. State gained 400 yards against them. Then again, Tech won both games. Against the Hurricanes, Tech held the ball for 34 minutes, 49 seconds. Against the Wolfpack, 33:20. Georgia ranks 102nd among 133 FBS teams in rushing offense. Just FYI.

Let's be clear. I expect the Bulldogs to win. They have more at stake. But this is the first time Smart's first season that I foresee a competitive game. If we've learned anything about these Jackets, it's that they'll compete.

With the degree of difficulty involved, Tech folks would be content with a 7-5 season. Should this team somehow get to 8-4, it wouldn't just be remembered fondly. It would be remembered forever.
