Play Calling on First Down

Certainly there were a number of reasons why we lost yesterday. My own opinion is that we have some playmakers on offense for chunk plays, but our defense is so bad that we need an offense that can create long time consuming drives to keep our D off the field. It seems as if we kept handing the ball off to Cooley on first down that resulted in 2nd and 11, 2nd and 12, etc. etc, These resulted in 3 and outs as I did not feel we created any second and short situations. Maybe it was execution, but you would think we would try something else. Thoughts?
.

King

I felt King would be named the starter and for the first 3 games he performed overall well. These last four however have been extremely up and down with mostly down. The pic 6 shifted momentum but the 2nd and 3rd pics pretty much deflated the team. His demeanor didn’t help.

He ran today which he’s been extremely hesitant to do but when he did he helped the offense. Idk if those runs gassed him on his throws but he immediately became erratic after one scamper. Then on the next drive instead of running he throws an awful pic. This is his team and they’re going as far as he goes but basically I’m losing faith.

FOOTBALL One key stat usually makes or breaks the Brent Key GT football team

Having watched now for 14 games, Brent Key football at Georgia Tech there is one predictive stat that is an obvious one but also looms large in whether the Jackets will win or lose on Saturday against Boston College. That stat is turnover margin.

In Tech's losses under Key
2022 UVA +2
2022 FSU +2
2022 Miami -4
2022 UGA =
2023 Louisville -1
2023 Ole Miss 0
2023 Bowling Green -3

In Tech's wins
2022 Pitt +3
2022 Duke +1
2022 VaTech +4
2022 UNC =
2023 South Carolina State =
2023 Wake Forest +3
2023 Miami +2

The obvious two outliers are the Virginia game where Jeff Sims tried to play and could not run and Zach Gibson entered the game trying to run the same game plan as Sims and was put in a bad spot and played worse. The other one is the FSU game where Tech's defense just got gashed for the entire game by FSU who suddenly put the pieces together to begin the run they are still on.

This season has been the most obvious one with the three losses all coming in games they did not win the turnover battle. Ole Miss and Tech both avoided turnovers as the only game during this 14-game span without a turnover for at least one side but there was a blocked kick that went against Georgia Tech which to me is the same as a turnover. King's fumble that gave Louisville an edge happened at the UL26 when the Jackets were driving to take the lead down 29-28 with 3:53 to go on the second-longest drive of the day for the Jackets.

The less said about Bowling Green the better.

That brings us to Boston College. Tech is top 30 in turnover margin this season (+3) despite the last two games tilting the numbers a little bit due to the sheer volume by the Jackets of six total turnovers. Boston College is ranked 90th at -1 on the season.

It is a simple stat but it is pretty much an accurate one. Every good coach I know follows it along with blocked kicks as being consistent predictors of a chance to win.

FOOTBALL Long 3rd down pass by BC

Sorry if this is buried in all the flaming threads about our program...

BC "completed" a long pass on 3rd down in the 4th. Sure looked like it bounced. They sprinted up to get another play snapped. I know we only had 1 TO left, but man...I would have used it to get a replay.

I heard TV never showed a slo mo replay.

Was it a catch? If overturned that may have helped us.

FOOTBALL OT: Week 8 games

Week eight!

Early games- it’s a weak slate except for:

Ohio St. - Penn State - I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loathe tOSU. They’re the Yankee team I hate like most of you seem to hate notre dame. I hope Penn St pulls it off. This is not a dominant tOSU program like years past.

Afternoon games -another weak slate.

Tennessee at Alabama - I am pulling for Bama to get their second loss here because I think Tennessee loses at least one more. Joe Milton just doesn’t look good though.

Evening games - slightly better fare.

Duke/FSU - who would have figured this would be a marquis matchup? We need fsu to be great this year.

Utah/USC - I’m pulling for Utah here.

Just seems kind of a slow week. What am I missing here? Any storylines or games that look to be good?

FOOTBALL RECRUITING UPDATING: Georgia Tech set to host several 2024, 2025 targets

GT head coach Brent Key and his staff are starting to put together a true vision for how they see the class finishing out, and as a result new offers are going out almost daily.

A big weekend for GT on the field has translated into a big weekend on the sidelines, as a solid group of recruits are heading to Atlanta.

Castellanos

He's the real deal. Almost 400 yds combined passing and rushing. And just a sophomore. Gonna just get better and better as he gains experience.

Took my cousin visiting from the UK to to the game. He's a former pro rugby player. He's no expert on American football, but midway through the first quarter he said "BC's quarterback is the best player on the field". Can't disagree.

GT / Hyundai Celebrate Partnership

GT and Hyundai leaders held a formal event yesterday to sign a memo of understanding for our broad based partnership. For those that have been wondering, the linked article provides a nice overview of the scope of the partnership which is quite ambitious. Of particular note, BDS naming rights are really a very minor element of the arrangement. It is clear to me that Hyundai came to GT seeking an innovation & research partnership and President Cabrera made the athletics sponsorship a part of the deal. I believe it is fair to say that with prior GT presidents this deal would have been done without athletics being part of the conversation. Very encouraging!
