OT: Don't snark at the I-85

I made an annoyed tweet while sitting in dead-stop traffic on I-85 today going up to Charlotte near Spartanburg. I-85 thanked me by shredding a perfectly good rear tire about 20 minutes from my hotel near the Charlotte airport and then giving me an over-torqued lugnut That I spent 20 minutes trying to take off before a good samaritan dude with a toolbox pulled over and helped me get it off and put the spare on.

Don't mess with I-85

Couch Coach vs. Boston College

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. BC. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

This is game was the antithesis of what Coach Brent Key sold it as. We lacked discipline, structure, and the aggression that we all believed CBK was going to deliver. What made this review so frustrating was we made it easy for BC with our mental mistakes not their scheme or talent

giphy.gif

King didn’t have a good day passing but Blaylock left him out to dry quite a bit with his poor route running. This RPO was the perfect call but with Blaylock not flattening this slant, it allows the DB to get an angle to undercut the ball and break the play up. Blaylocks lazy route running also contributed to the pick 6 imo
giphy.gif

giphy.gif

When we do play aggressive and attack blockers on defense. Good things happen. Good job by Tatum flowing and making the tackling for minimal gain

giphy.gif

This type of stuff drive me nuts!! You put 8 people in a zone multiple guys at the sticks. You force Castellanos to run out the pocket. #9 Kennard must rush him as soon as he’s outside the pocket. No need to back up or worry about at the TE. GO HIT THE QB!!!

giphy.gif

You can make the perfect call and still not execute. This was a big momentum shift in the game to me. This was a forced ball into double coverage. I’m not sure what #5 CPL is doing here as the lurker. He has no threat of a crosser and all other routes shallow. This should’ve been an easy INT

giphy.gif

Again, right call poor execution by King. We have a goalline pinch called which should allow the 2nd level to flow to the outside unblocked. #97 Eddie Kelly does great job taking on the block and eliminating 2 blockers. Unfortunately, King leaves his responsibility as the force/contain guy and sticks his nose in the pile of players and loses the edge
giphy.gif

We need a lot more this. Players making plays. Poor throw by Castellanos. Ball should be in the middle of goalpost or left upright. The throw to the right upright gave Harvey the opportunity to make this play

giphy.gif

Us being aggressive again and being rewarded for it

giphy.gif

Formationing yourself into a win. 3x1 set - if the boundary cb travels to the 3 WR side, that is dead give it’s man coverage. Good job the WRs creating pick and good ball by Haynes for the way score

giphy.gif

Special teams being special. A low snap screws up the hold and forces an extra point. Our margin for errors are too thin for these mishaps to continue

giphy.gif

You want your coach to do this??? Come out of a TV timeout to start the quarter on a crucial play with only 10 players on the field. Based on other replays, it appears Kennard was missing

giphy.gif

giphy.gif

Even with 10 players, this should’ve been bottled up. Under no circumstances, Miles Brooks should be rushing the QB unless Sherrer wants to tell us that #11 should man up the TE which i doubt

giphy.gif

Over the past few weeks, one of past few weeks I’ve noticed some sloppiness in King footwork. Here the ball sails on him on a wide open throw that he’s made all year due to him being balance. The DT shouldn’t have influenced this throw. He be stepping into in not back.

giphy.gif

Here BC Running QB counter. We crashed the DL right to the formation strength. 2 issues.

#8 Makius Scott on the left has to continue his pursuit to the right and cross that OT face. By him trying to swim back left gets him sealed and creates a lane.

#1 Mile has to slow play this. There is no need to be in a hurry until you see the QB going to the edge. Him overrunning the play allows Castellanos to hit his head on the goalpost

HOOPS Damon Stoudamire at the ACC Tipoff

Stoudamire jumped in immediately when I got over to him on NIL. He said that with pro sports there is a responsibility to get paid. These are kids and you can't give them a pass because now they are getting paid too. Then the NCAA hasn't implemented any rules and he said he feels like they did that on purpose. You can't just implement NIL and not put in any rules. They put a bunch of money in the neighborhood and then told everyone to just go get it with no rules. I'll shoot you to get the money.

I asked about how the fundraising piece is going. He said that J Batt and his team do a great job of handling the heavy lifting part of getting alums engaged with the NIL people and he is mostly brought in to talk to them. He is all for getting kids paid and the model is bad and it is not sustainable and everyone is going to go out of business and go bankrupt. You can't ask people that help build the buildings and put holes in the ground and come around and ask for $100k. They didn't get rich by giving away money like that and then on top of that you tell them it is not tax deductible either.

Stoudamire said that whenever you ask for money from someone you are going to get a lecture, but if you come with a plan they are usually going to ask how much do you need but at the end of the day it is hard to raise money and you've got to go out and just do it and hope that people understand why and what NIL is about and what it looks like. We've been doing well and J and those guys have done a great job and will continue to do it, but they've got to make it easier on institutions and the people asked to fundraise to generate the interest to want to donate and give and that it is for a better cause but right now we are in a pay-for-play environment and then we are telling them they can't write it off. Also what no one is saying is the NCAA is still not giving any of their money up either. They are getting all that money. This isn't a sustainable model.

Stoudamire said there is nothing tying the kid either and they can go in the portal whenever, but also they can choose to not pay them if they are not good enough either. It is like a movie.

Stoudamire said there are no rules and they are just giving them money and they have people talk to them about money but there are no safeguards in place to protect the kids and he thinks they are setting him up for failure. He said if he had access to this type of money at their age he would've spent it all and the kids are doing that. He thinks they should be putting 70% of the NIL money away for the kids and letting them have 30% and it shouldn't be a choice so they have something left at the end of the day. They are getting hired like pros but not given the support even pro sports get from the NCAA.

Stoudamire said that him and Bonzi share horror stories of guys they know in the NBA who went broke but he said he still had a player walk in the other day with a Louis Vuitton pouch and the Maury sweats that cost $1500

Stoudamire said he would put rules that you can only get paid if you did something to earn it. Like if your initial ranking said this you are tiered money on the initial signing and then moving forward how you play dictates who much you get. This is pay-for-play if you out play your money then you get more and there is no limit on how much the school can give you after that but it is on the school, but for the initial signing. They don't know what that looks like nothing is a given with any signing. "For me, I can't lead with money. I need to know somebody wants to play for me. Because if we lead with money it becomes a transactional relationship and I don't want that because I can't coach you." He isn't against NIL and kids should get some money, but the implementation has been poorly done.

On why he came to GT, GT is an institution and in the ACC and he had a really good job and he tended to lean toward being a pro coach rather than a college coach. After his first year in the NBA as a coach he thought he would never come back to college unless it was the right job. GT checked a lot of boxes and made it easier for him.

On recruiting the ATL, he said it is not easy recruiting Atlanta and there are a lot of kids who just want to leave and see something else. He said he has done a pretty good job of recruiting in Atlanta and the first kid he ever signed at Memphis was from Atlanta and he maintained a lot of relationships and already knew a lot of people here so that helped him. He is a big relationship guy.

Stoudamire said his favorite part of practice is teaching. Breaking it down on offense or defense, he likes the teaching aspect because these guys don't know and that is the most important thing for him is the attention to detail.

Stoudamire said his least favorite part of coaching is yelling at someone or cussing someone out but he will do it if they are not doing the right thing over and over again (I've seen this myself and it is interesting because he is so laid back most of the time). He doesn't understand that part because when he grew up you just did what you were supposed to do and didn't get a pat on the back, you just became a creature of habit and did the right things instinctively.

I asked him what he learned in the secret scrimmage and he said that they can shoot with the lights on. Now he wants to see it with some fans in the stands. They also didn't turn the ball over, but he feels like they have a lot of work to do defensively.

On what he will have learned six months from now about this team, he is a process driven guy and he tells his kids they cannot skip the process it doesn't matter if they are 11-4 or 4-11 at that time, you have to honor the process. He is the CEO and he has to manage that. If they jump out and are 11-4 then he is managing success and if they are 4-11 he is managing expectations so you have to be ready for both, but the process never changes.

Damon said he does not eat the day of a game and fasts. He said he has always been like that and he will eat a little something after the game, but he doesn't like eating late so if it is a later game he will just have a little something. Even when he played he used to do that.

He was asked about the perception of the league post-Coach K and Coach Williams, he said that to the outside there is a lot of uncertainty about the ACC, but he would be lying if he didn't say the job is easier now than when Josh Pastner had it four years ago with so many new coaches now in the league compared to that time. He said Duke will be Duke and UNC will be UNC, he doesn't think that is changing but there has been change and seeing what Jim Larranaga is doing at Miami for example into a top program the last few years shows there is room for others teams to emerge now but you have to build it the right way. NIL has changed things a lot as well

I asked him his opinion on one and done, he said people think he is crazy but he loves one and done. He said he doesn't care about winning or losing, he isn't scared to be fired. He has had jobs and success so he isn't scared of that. One and dones are talented kids and if you bring them in you aren't going to be afraid of them because if they come you are going to win. At the end of the day he gets more excited about seeing kids succeed and he almost cares about that more than his own individual success as a coach. Coaches have good years and they get extensions but if you have a good team and none of those players turn into pros, who really won? At the end of the day he wants everyone rewarded in the same way. One and dones are a notch for the program and to him coaching is about everyone getting what they want out of it. He doesn't want raises or extensions and the kids not make it to the NBA.

On who is standing out to him right now on the team, Miles Kelly and Deebo Coleman are standing out. Deebo has probably been the MVP of the team so far because he is standing out and he is the guy they asked to change the most and do something different than what he was used to. He applauds him for what he has done and he is playing really well and he has done everything I've asked. He has said make it hard on me coach, don't make it easy on me. I think he has bought in. He is shooting the ball well. Also Kowacie Reeves has been the most consistent players every day, doesn't mean he is the best player, but he is doing his job and being in the right place at the right time. It isn't about him making or missing shots, he has been doing the right thing and so has Deebo.

Stoudamire said he used to look for clones of himself as a PG and he won't do that anymore because he doesn't see guys like that and he is looking for someone who wants to pass the ball and score.

He said the biggest difference between college and pros is the pros have a great feel for the game at that point and they know who they are as players and they are getting paid for that so they tend to better prepared for that. He said that college kids are all about the process and building them up to find that identity.

What were the real expectations?

First of all, I bet a lot of y’all are fun at parties - based on some of your comments and posts 🙄

Let’s take a step back and gather a touch of prospective.

Key is taking over for one of the worst to hold the position of head coach at the FBS level. Collins was a pure and complete disaster and as much as been discussed on this site. His teams weren’t even competitive in a majority of games he coached. Before Collins, GT had a fairly successful coach in Paul Johnson that ran the triple option. I know a good many of you remember him because a good many of you wanted him gone for so many years.

GT athletics has been behind the 8 ball for decades due to bad ADs, bad coaching hires, and bad coaching contracts. This has led, in addition to a few other factors, to GT being cash strapped for essentially any year that starts with “20”.

This isn’t exactly the most talented team to ever take the field for the Jackets either. Let’s take off our subjective glasses and see that, while we really like a lot of these players, there isn’t a ton of talent on this roster, especially within the upper class. It’s about Jimmy’s and Joe’s more than it is about X’s and O’s. Which brings me to my next point….

Even some of the most elite coaches have made some head scratching decisions, especially early in their careers. Hello Kirby and his fake punt with Fields in the SEC championship game. Yes, Key has been less than stellar in some of his decision making thus far. But, we don’t know all the factors that have went into his decisions and it’s very easy to arm chair quarterback all of this.

Key may end up being another mistake hire in the long history of mistake hires in both college football and Georgia Tech athletics history. But, we need to pump the brakes on calling for his firing and in some cases, hoping for his demise. I think we owe him and the program more time before giving him the death penalty. Some of you were were pissed at the idea of Willie Fritz taking over, but now are pretending that he was your choice all along. That’s laughable.

We knew that, no matter who got the job, he would be in for a big challenge to turn this program around. And halfway through his first full season, many of you are already preparing to move on from CBK. Leaving me with my final question to ponder…

Who did you want and who do you want for the future? Who is a clear upgrade that GT could realistically get and afford? What would Tech’s record be if Fritz, Chadwell, Prike, etc. were the head coach? Heck, what would their record be if Nick Saban were the head coach?

KQ and Russ have laid out our deficiencies for several months now and even prior to the season. So it should be no much of a surprise that GT is hovering around .500, especially considering the lack of funding for GTAA and NIL. But, they have also stated that GT is getting interests from recruits that they haven’t gotten in several years. Let’s be patient and keep supporting the program and see what the future holds. What choice do we have?

I can’t wait to hear all of this hate!

FOOTBALL RECRUITING LB Demontrae Gaston “decommits”

tweet incoming, his first one got deleted. He’s not a bad little player, will be interesting to see where he ends up.

This has been in the works since before the season started, imo. That’s why I didn’t take the trip down there to see him.

I accidentally leaked this during the Q&A yesterday.

HOOPS Secret Scrimmage Scoop: GT vs UAB

Georgia Tech hosted UAB on Sunday for their one secret scrimmage before the exhibition next week against Clark Atlanta. It was a very different Yellow Jacket men's basketball team from a year ago in style and the way Damon Stoudamire handles things. The Jackets defeated UAB 93-82, but it was not a traditional setup.

They played 3 16-minute periods like a hockey game instead of 20 minute halves or even 10 minute quarters.

The 1st period was tied
The 2nd period GT outscored UAB by 1
The 3rd period GT outscored UAB by 10

The first big difference is out of 76 shots, GT shot 45 threes.

Damon rotated players throughout the game based on pre-determined rotations of guys he wanted to see on the court together and everyone who was healthy played. Baye Ndongo and Lance Terry both did not scrimmage as they are both recovering from injuries. Both should be fine for the regular season.

Three guys led the team with 11 each, Miles Kelly was one, but it took him 16 shots to get there. Walk-on and former Air Force guard Carter Murphy was one of the others he did it on just six shots. Murphy apparently played really well.

20 assists and just nine turnovers.

Lots of corner threes and in the final run that put the scrimmage away, Deebo, Ibrahima Sacko 2x and Carter Murphy each hit threes to pull away.

The game was not coached to win or lose but for Damon to see who how his guys reacted to situations and in different pairings against other teams.

Ebe Dowuona shared his thoughts on the scrimmage, "It felt really good. It was the first time we ever played against somebody else and because we always practice against each other. It felt very good just to just play against a different team and different guys that we have no idea what their strengths and weaknesses are. And it shows us where we're where we stand in terms of how we score and how we defend," he said. "I'm excited because I'll be I felt like we looked really good just for the first time."

FOOTBALL Brent Key Press Conference Quotes 10/24

Got back out on the field, disappointing loss on Saturday. Went through the team meeting, positional meetings and individual meetings. You can’t look in the rearview mirror and one thing can lead to another and we’ve had examples of putting things past this year. You have to put yourself in a position to win a game or be there in the fourth quarter. You have to understand what allowed you to not win the game. We went around the room and had players speak it out and say those things and they were all correct with the good things and bad things. It came after their position meetings. The kids are aware and after the fact they have to know and understand them and why. They have to push through and work and get the win at the end. The consistency. When you’ve proven you can do it and compete the entire game, you have to take that now and be consistent. We knew BC would be a 4 quarter game and we didn’t play well in the fourth quarter. We have to play with an edge and some toughness.

We’ve got a good opponent coming in and where UNC is there year, they had a tough loss as well and they are going to be hungry.

On the lack of run defense in the second half, if you look at the end of the 3rd QT we had allowed 155 yards rushing and they doubled it in the fourth quarter. It is the ability to execute in the fourth quarter.

On the subs issues, Key said that was the first team that went from spread personnel to six or seven Ols and they had to line up with a 4-2-5 against 11 personnel and there are 7 Ols and two TEs in, so that was unique to BC and that messed up the subs. That was something they didn’t practice for months. The jumbo package on defense, you are putting in bigger bodies. One person tweaks an ankle or they are out and they didn’t hear the sub, but they have to do a better job of creating that situation in practice. They knew they did it and had the right plan for it, but it goes back to the practice and replicating them in the game.

On bouncing back from losses, I wish it was a light switch I could tape up with duct tape and leave on, but it shows what the team is capable of doing consistently. We can bounce back, we are so happy with the bounce back but the deflation is so bad. That is the consistency we are working towards. We’ve got to continue to do it consistently. I wish there was a better concrete thing to say about the bounce back.

For whatever reason there are so many external things we see as adults today and they get engrained in people’s heads. If you can shut off social media for a week, but everyone wants to scroll and everyone talks to people, friends and family and that is all over. That is the way of the world and it has been that way since I’ve been involved with football. The only thing that matters is what goes on in this building. Your knowledge of the opponents and executing the plan and we work on it every day and having the right mindset every game. The mindset was good going in and the plan and I would say if it wasn’t last week, but something happened as the game went on and there is one or two plays and then you don’t know when those things happen and you have to be ready for that.

Key said they have a Sunday team meeting and then all the other meetings and then practice on Sunday night and the approach is pretty routine and it changes for the game. Having players speak up is not unique or new, but I wanted to hear their opinions. It is one thing for us to say it, but it means more when your peers say the same thing unprovoked.

Key said they have to play around Haynes King in all three phases and you want to put it on their back and go win the game. That doesn’t happen every time and sometimes they press and try to make something happen and the ball is going into a tight window and sometimes those are big plays this season and there are things that Chris and Buster are cognizant of and he understands that too what he does right and wrong. He can coach himself through the good plays and the bad plays and I think Haynes will get better and eliminate those things that are hurting him.

Key said UNC has a great QB and added a dynamic skill guy in Tez and they have great RBs, but it goes through Drake Maye and their OL is good. Their OC does what Drake is comfortable with and goes through his eyes with the calls. The QB makes it go.

Key said it is big/little and they get a good run here and it is QB driven and Haynes is allowed to pull the ball and get on the perimeter but you can’t look at stats, analytics drill down stats are big. If you take the big runs out and that is where it stands out. I talked to Buster about this on Sunday, we had a 10-12 yard run and you get 1,2,1 yards and you are at 2nd and 9 everything tells you to run the ball, you got 20 seconds maybe just 10 seconds to make the next decision, the last three times it was a yard so we’ve got to do a better job of running the ball to take that off the OC and allow us to maintain the ball, impact the field position and that was a game we needed to win the field position and we were plus or minus one yard instead of winning it. That run game has to improve. There will be some things we do this week to open up running the football.

JOL Mailbag 10/23 Sponsored by Auto-Owners Insurance

Monday Afternoon Kelly- You’re hired as Head Coach of just say Georgia Tech. For Coordinators, are you looking for Old School and Experience but stale or Young, Hungry yet inexperienced?’

KQ- I think in this era I am going to look for guys who are successful but not too old at whatever levels they've coached at. That is what interested me in Mike Elko all the way back to when he was at Bowling Green with Dave Clawson for example on D or other guys with interesting offensive wrinkles. It also depends on what is my specialty as a HC. Am I an offense guy or a defense guy or am I Shane Beamer and neither.

In your opinion why has our football team not showed more progress this season? Is it more on the players or the coaching?

KQ- They have holes at major positions that were amplified by injuries and Key made a mistake keeping Andrew Thacker as DC and not keeping the entire D staff and whatever the mojo was that worked there. He needed to blow up that side of the ball just like the offense and he only blew up part of it and really the two guys who had the most successful position group a year ago the DL. He needed to cut deeper IMO.

Why are we so flat at home? Can’t really blame the crowd for this game.

KQ- I really have no idea. This has been an ongoing issue for quite some time. The Duke game last year was the first home win for GT against a P5 opponent that finished with a winning record since the end of the 2018 season when GT beat UVA in overtime in PJ's last home game at BDS. How about that stat? Definitely something odd has gone on in the meantime in BDS.

- The softness from Collins still seems here. Should it have been driven out at this point or did you expect it to take longer?

KQ- I've covered a lot of transitions in various forms and you can't just hit delete and change the mindset of the team and you can't just bring in a group of portal players mostly non-critical players except Haynes King, the kid from Princeton and Moala and expect that to change your culture overnight.

If you have ever worked in a job where there was a corporate takeover or the company was sold and there was suddenly new leadership how everyone responds is totally different person to person and if they are trying to change "I had the word but" culture of that business it takes time sometimes years to reimagine it. At Bama, it took Saban several years to really install his culture and set of expectations and it took Kirby about three years at UGA. Miami has been in an ouroboros for basically 20 years because of cultural issues. FSU flamed out and it took Mike Norvell several years to fix it and until this season to have a team with tons of talent back into the top 25.

A while back, you had mentioned that CBK had a plan all mapped out for what he wants to do at GT. How's the progress compared to plan? Also, at what point should we be expecting that we can out physical people? Key preached that as a mantra of our team (BpBuSp) - it just doesn't ever seem to happen, even when we play G5 teams.

KQ- Progress is not linear and Key has made some mistakes as all young coaches do and as I have detailed on here elsewhere. He needs to continue improving the team, tweak his staff and roster and learn from them. If he doesn't and this repeats into next season then he is in major trouble, but people just are not being realistic about anything regarding the fragility of the program and the mindset and how there isn't chemistry with the staff including changing DCs midseason creating issues like the sub patterns in the last couple of games.

How can we come off a bye week with all these issues? Lack of focus, subbing issues, calls coming late/dbs looking at the sidelines as ball is snapped. Thanks for the website!

KQ- Changing DCs midseason is part of it. As more stuff gets introduced like the sub packages Kevin Sherrer wanted to use, guys were not ready for it, the staff screwed up as well because it is a new thing. The focus thing bothers me, the decisions that King is making with the ball and his lack of reading his progressions in the last two games has bothered me as well. Some of it is coaches and some of it is players.

Are we doing doing something different for a home game like not putting the players in a hotel the night before ? or something else that stands out

KQ- They go to a hotel. Key gave a long explanation last week of how he was trying to shake up their home routine after the BG game. They went to class that Friday before BG and no other team I know does that.

What’s up with Dontae Smith? Deep in the doghouse or something else? If he is hurt, why is he dressed and why does he play a little bit?

KQ- I don't know the answer to that other than obviously there is a disconnect and he is not playing. Maybe they haven't liked his work ethic or maybe there is friction or he is in the doghouse or Buster of Norv doesn't jive with him. Something is definitely off there. He is not injured.

If the preseason QB was as close as Key said it was, why hasn’t Key given Pyron a shot in the BG or BC games when King was so off?

KQ- I've wondered that but really more when King wasn't running when he should have. King is not entirely healthy and it is not super easy for him to run, but if you are running this offense with this group of dudes he has to run or he has to come out of the game if they can't run with the RBs. They are not good enough to be one-dimensional.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Another new DL target to keep an eye on..

Jurkin tells me he plans to visit for the Syracuse game. Recruiting staffer Beau Davidson flexing his Texas muscle a bit on finding this one. BC offered recently as well. I had to create him a profile, if you are wondering how under the radar he is/was.
