Jackets Drop WBIT Decision at MSU, 84-47

Tonie Morgan led Georgia Tech with team-high 16 points

STARKVILLE, Miss. Tonie Morgan recorded her seventh-straight double-figure scoring game, but Georgia Tech got off to a slow start and couldn’t overcome Mississippi State in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament, falling 84-47 in Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday.

Shooting struggles plagued the Yellow Jackets in the first half as Georgia Tech saw offensive production from only three different Jackets. Tech was held scoreless for nearly the first six minutes of the game, allowing Mississippi State to build a double-digit lead early. Morgan kept Tech in the game in the first 20 minutes, producing 12 points. Inés Noguero hit the Jackets’ first triple of the game early in the third frame as Kara Dunn chipped in seven points in the period to lead Tech, but the Bulldogs continued to answer every Tech move.

Morgan finished with 16 points on five field goals and a 6-of-7 effort from the free throw line. Dunn followed with 14 points, while Kayla Blackshear added eight and Rusne Augustinaite contributed six points. Morgan also led the Jackets on the glass with six rebounds, while Sydney Johnson dished out a game-high six assists. Cold shooting plagued the Jackets from the start as the team shot 28.8 percent (17-59) from the field.

Morgan capped her sophomore season with 29 double-figure scoring games, eight double-doubles and led Tech with 170 assists. She finished as the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game on average.

Mississippi State was led offensively by four Bulldogs in double-figures. Jasmine Brown-Hagger led the way with 17 points. MSU won the battle on the glass, 44-30, paced by seven rebounds from Jessika Carter. For the game, the Bulldogs shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the field and 13-for-15 from the free throw line.

Tech closed its season with a 17-16 overall record and made its third postseason appearance in five seasons under head coach Nell Fortner. Morgan and Dunn both picked up prestigious recognition, being named second-team all-ACC.

The downside of hiring Damon Stoudamire out of the NBA was the learning curve for basketball in 2023-24 with the portal and open free agency ruling the sport. He was behind the eight-ball because the opportunity was a sudden almost fluke-like situation of timing falling just in line with J Batt and Stoudamire being able to spend time and bond when Stoudamire wasn't actively seeking a college job. The team showed signs of tremendous progress during Stoudamire's first season on the court, but also the flaws of trying to put together a roster late in the game and having to mix and match pieces including former players recruited for a significantly different offensive and defensive philosophy and also evaluating on the fly talent.

Stoudamire and his staff showed plenty of skill with the evaluation of HS targets adding Baye Ndongo a top 120 player flipping him from Rutgers and then plucking Naithan George out of obscurity and a possible reclassification to 2024. Tech beat out Seattle and a geographical college in Texas for George. Even Ibrahima Sacko showed some signs of life.

They missed on Ebenezer Dowuona the big man addition via NC State who just hasn't figured it out and then missed most of the final third of the season with a foot injury. They took a flyer on Kowacie Reeves who worked out pretty well and Amaree Abram who was a giant bust after showing tremendous flashes at Ole Miss. Tafara Gapare took almost two-thirds of the season, but he finally figured out his role and started playing like an ACC contributor.

Ibrahim Souare redshirted along with veteran Lance Terry who could've helped Tech win games because Stoudamire was trying to do the right thing for the young men instead of what may have helped pick up one or two more wins in his first season knowing they were not likely competing for ACC titles or NCAAT in year one.

The team was built around Miles Kelly and he buckled under the strain of being asked to elevate his all-around game and had a terrible shooting season that helped contribute to many of the losses this season and then his back gave out when he was finally turning the corner during the last stretch run of the season wiping him out.

Deebo Coleman was inconsistent in his seven-man role, while Kyle Sturdivant was really good in his sixth-man role despite his limited abilities.

So now Stoudamire has time to actually find the pieces he needs, time under his system to make evaluations and be real with players with where they stand and what is best for them.

That will mean some kids will depart and some will stay and be pieces of Tech's future.

If I were Damon Stoudamire I focus on a true center who can score in the paint, rebound and block shots as well as some type of shooter and some type of guard who can win off the dribble and get to the rim. I think those three things would make GT an NCAAT next year even if you just built around Baye, Nait, Kowacie and Lance plus the freshmen.

Getting a big man is hard work, but they can do better than Claude and Ebe, no offense to those guys, but Claude was a 5-10 mpg guy being stretched out in ACC play way past his physical abilities and Ebe is just not good around the rim and isn't a skilled rebounder or consistent shot blocker.

This will be an interesting time for Stoudamire to prove his proof of concept and do what needs to be done to turn GT around and get things rolling.

HOOPS RECRUITING Visitors this weekend..

As both Kelly and I have been hinting at around here, head coach Damon Stoudamire and his staff are already focused on the roster for the 2024-25 season and beyond.

Two massive official visitors this weekend-

Future Rivals100 G Justin Pippen
Login to view embedded media Rivals100 C Doryan Onwuchekwa
Login to view embedded media In talking to sources, I confirmed that Doryan never took his previously scheduled official visit to GT in September. The former Buffs signee took a virtual visit, but never did make it to Atlanta.

That changes this weekend, and if I was entering FC picks for both visitors going into the weekend, I'd have them both set for Georgia Tech.

P.S. I have not confirmed which family members Justin will have with him.

HOOPS All time Tech team

Saw this on Facebook and found it interesting. Who would make your All-Time Tech basketball team? Let's make it position specific, so it must be a reasonable lineup that could compete in a game (i.e. not 5 guards). Let's also include position specific bench players. Let's keep it to 3 subs.

Here's mine:

G - Kenny Anderson
G - Steph Marbury
G/F - Dennis Scott
F - Matt Harpring
F - Tom Hammonds

Bench
G - Mark Price
G - Jarrett Jack
F - John Salley

HOOPS WAR ROOM: Basketball Edition 3/13

The Georgia Tech season has ended and now the fun part begins for Damon Stoudamire and his staff. Stoudamire will be evaluating every aspect of his program and taking the things he has learned in his first year coaching in the ACC and then trying to fill in the holes.

I would not be shocked to see him make a change on his five-man bench as he promoted BJ Elder from the off the court once Terry Parker left in November. Also, Pershin Williams's name is being mentioned for so low-major jobs in the A-Sun and other places. I'm curious how the two non-traditional assistants Nate Babcock and Bonzi Wells felt about life in CBB. Both have a lot of NBA experience so I have no idea if they love it or not or whatever, not a negative thought just more of a curiosity thing. Babcock did a ton of in-game coaching. Karl Hobbs seems very happy in his role.

Staff shuffle a fair bit in CBB so it will be interesting to see what Damon's approach is and if guys get other opportunities or not.

On to recruiting,

Everyone wants to know about him. Right now I would say I expect him to sign with FSU unless someone comes in and outbids FSU. The Noles put up a sizeable offer according to my sources and I think Stoudamire and company love the kid, but the kid isn't running his recruitment or making the decision which is crazy, but not unusual. Davis would like to come to GT, but his people seem to want him at FSU regardless of whether Leonard Hamilton is coaching next year or not. I've not really seen something like this, so it is a wow from me. This whole saga has been crazy so things could change, but that is where it stands less than two weeks from his decision.

I expect Pippen to take an OV within the next two weeks to GT and my sources indicate if GT wants, he will commit. Since his season is over, they can work him out on the visit as well and that could help be a determining factor in the decision whether to take Pippen or go into the portal for a more seasoned option. The upside with Pippen and looking at his family history of developing in college also makes him a really exciting potential take for the staff per my sources.

I expect Doryan will also be back on campus within the next two weeks for another visit to reconnect with GT and they will try to close that one. He did his OV back in September before committing to Colorado at the time. TCU and GT seem to be the main players for him still. TCU should be in the NCAAT, but with him being in Dallas it is easy for him to visit there as well unofficially again before he makes a decision.

On the commit side everything looks good with the three HS signees,

Cole is a guy I get asked about and he could end up following in the footsteps of Ibrahim Souare and being a first-year redshirt to gain weight and strength as well as developing his game. Souare has benefitted from that and Damon isn't going to play 13 guys so he is fine using a redshirt on a big guy or an injured guy like Lance Terry if it is what is best for the player.

-----------TEAM-------------------

As I said before they are leaning hard into keeping the core of Baye Ndongo and Naithan George together. Souare and George are very close so that helps there. Ndongo will get a very nice NIL package and he told me he is excited about next year and ready to come back to GT in the locker room yesterday.

I really have no clue what will happen with Miles Kelly. He would be smart to come back and embrace being a catch-and-shoot guy in a more functional version of Stoudamire's offense. They would like him back but he will have to work within the NIL budget.

I expect Lance Terry, Kowacie Reeves and Tafara Gapare all to come back.

I think Ebenezer Dowuona bounces down a level. That just hasn't worked out at all.

I think Deebo Coleman and Amaree Abram hit the portal. Abram wasn't dressed and had to be told to get rid of his cell phone on the bench yesterday.

Ibrahima Sacko is an interesting one. He is limited but a nice bench piece, I really don't know what the plan is there.

So if you have the core six Terry, Ndongo, George, Reeves, Gapare and Souare back plus the three commits that puts you at nine. You have X-factor guys like Kelly or Sacko. So that leaves Stoudamire with a few spots to use in the portal.

A big man is a must in the portal, doesn't have to be an All-American, just a functional center who can block shots and rebound and score in the paint however I'm sure they'll aim higher than that.

The other good thing would be a guard who can beat someone off the dribble and get to the rim. That would be a potential upgrade from Kelly for example if he were to go pro or transfer. That is something to keep an eye on.

Stoudamire really likes the core of his team and the way the guys came together and played hard for him and didn't give up despite a lot of obstacles this season. You can see the sparks of something bigger and better if he can get the right mix of guys who want to play hard for 40 minutes every night.

"How was your experience at McCamish" survey

I get a handful of surveys from the GTAA throughout the year and they all seem to be too long. Normally I complete them, but I've also ditched more than one because of the length.

I wonder how many responses they get and whether or not the surveys are actually effective.

The bottom line there are only two things that would make the McCamish experience substantively better - a consistently good team and a full house. (I was a student during the height of the Thrillerdome years, so my expectations are high.)

GTWB: Tech Earns Bid to WBIT Postseason Tournament

Women’s basketball travels to Mississippi State for first round on Thursday

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball is continuing its postseason run earning a selection into the first-ever Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) on Sunday night during the selection show.

The Yellow Jackets (17-15 overall, 7-11 ACC) will open the tournament traveling to Mississippi State, which earned a No. 2 seed, on Thursday, March 21. The winner will advance to the second round to face either No. 3-seeded TCU or North Texas. Second round action will be played on March 24.

Georgia Tech reached the second round of the ACC Tournament and has won two of its last three outings. The Jackets capped the regular season picking up some hardware as both Kara Dunn and Tonie Morgan were all-ACC second-team selections. Morgan, who nearly averaged a double-double in Tech’s two games of the ACC Tournament, was also named to the ACC All-Tournament second team.

Four Yellow Jackets are averaging double-figure scoring numbers on the season, paced by Dunn and Morgan at 15.6 points per game each. Kayla Blackshear follows, contributing 11.9 points, while freshman Rusne Augustinaite adds 11.0 points per game on average.

Mississippi State capped its season with a 21-11 overall record and 8-8 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs fell in the second round of the SEC Tournament to Texas A&M. Jerkaila Jordan paces the Bulldogs, averaging 16.0 points per game, while Jessika Carter contributes a double-double behind 14.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. MSU has dropped six of its past seven outings.

Georgia Tech and Mississippi State have met five times in program history with the Bulldogs leading the series, 4-1. Tech took the last meeting between the programs in 2007.

Georgia Tech is returning to postseason action after making consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2022. This marks the third postseason appearance under the guidance of head coach Nell Fortner. Georgia Tech is making its 20th overall postseason appearance since its first WNIT selection in 1992.

The WBIT is a newly-created postseason tournament, owned and funded by the NCAA. In 2023, the NCAA announced the creation of the annual 32-team postseason invitation tournament with 2024 being the first edition.

Preliminary round games (first, second and quarterfinal rounds) will be played at campus sites. The WBIT semifinals and finals will be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, April 1 and 3, respectively. The top 16 seeds, as determined by the selection committee, will host first round games.

All preliminary round games will be streamed live on ESPN+. The semifinal and final games will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN2, respectively.

Below is the schedule of play for the tournament:
First Round March 21 Campus Sites
Second Round March 24 Campus Sites
Quarterfinals March 28 Campus Sites
Semifinals April 1 Hinkle Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, Ind.
Championship April 3 Hinkle Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, Ind.

BASEBALL SERIES THREAD: NC State

Georgia Tech (12-4) opens up play with a tough matchup against a 12-3 NC State team currently ranked in the Top 15.

Probable Starters:
FRI- Mason Patel (1-1, 6.94 ERA) vs. Sam Highfill (1-0, 3.86 ERA)
SAT Aeden Finateri (Jr., 3-0, 2.45 ERA) vs. Logan Whitaker (2-1, 4.42 ERA)
SUN: Logan McGuire (1-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. LHP Dominic Fritton (1-0, 6.88 ERA)

The Yellow Jackets enter Friday's matchup with the Wolfpack on a five-game winning streak, though outside of the emergence of Parker Brosius (13 RBI in the last five games) Carson Kerce locking down 3B, and the impressive start to the season Carson Ballard is on, there really isn't too much to take away from those games.

This weekend will come down to three things for GT- Plate discipline offensively, strike throwing on the mound, and defense.

Solo HR aren't going to win this game for either team.

NC State comes into the game on Friday with 17 errors, while GT has 12. The most eye-opening stat differential between the two teams is this-

NC State has 59 XBH
Georgia Tech has 75 XBH

-THREE WOLFPACK NAMES TO KNOW-

3B Alec Makarewicz - .388/.451/.600 with 34 RBI, 7 HR, and a team-high 55 total bases. 11/6 K/BB ratio

C Jacob Cozart - .375/.551/.729 with 13 RBI, 5 HR, and a team-high 19 BB. He's struck out 11 times in 48 AB

1B Garrett Pennington - .419/.507/.613 with 17 RBI and a 11/9 K/BB ratio. Pennington is the table-setter for the Pack near the top of the lineup. Not your typical 1B in 2024.

-PREDICTION-
Georgia Tech wins on Friday, as Highfill's struggles with control continue, loses on Saturday in a low-scoring game and Sunday in a more wide-open game
