NFL thread

I'm hoping one day we get a Professional football team in Altanta .
We have one fairly close to Atlanta, about an hours drive to the east when traffic is kind. The Smith Family had two franchises at one time that they bought and paid for. One still gets their checks. I call it hell, they named it Athens.

You do.

25 Jackets will start out training camps with a chance to make the final roster (some obviously are already a given like Demaryius Thomas of course)...scroll down for the list...

http://espn.go.com/nfl/college/_/letter/g

A few notes...

*Rod Sweeting had a tryout with the Lions back in early June. He's not listed at the link above, but may get a shot at Detroit - or, perhaps elsewhere.

*The NFL team with the most Jackets? That will be the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos (3) - Adam Gotsis, Vance Walker, and Bay Bay.

*Rookies? Along with drafted Gotsis and D.J. White (KC Chiefs), others include Tyler Marcordes (SD Chargers), Chris Milton (Indy Colts), and Patrick Skov (Cleveland Browns).

*Guys of note giving it another shot... Zack Laskey is back with the Rams and Quayshawn Nealy is now with the Cardinals.

*Daryl Smith just keeps on ticking...now with the Tampa Bay Bucs for his 13th season in the NFL...still recall his INT in the beatdown of the Scumbags at their toilet bowl back in '01.

*Strange to see Calvin Johnson not listed, but great to see DeAndre Smelter get his career finally going...hopefully, karma exists with his career that parallels Bay Bay - recall, Bay Bay was a non-factor and injured most of his first 2 years in Denver after being drafted far higher than most expected.

Hoping to see CJ as a volunteer assistant for the Jackets as he works to finish his degree, and then a graduate assistant thereafter. Can you imagine the press we would get.

I dunno, mate. We need more offensive line coaches. Hopefully, CJ can help out there.

We need at least 64 offensive linemen on scholarship and at least 37 OL assistant coaches (not including grad assistants like CJ).

;)

Defending Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Gary Kubiak says Adam Gotsis should be "ready to go" now that rookies have reported to Denver's preseason camp... http://espn.go.com/blog/denver-bron...e-booker-show-progress-as-broncos-camp-begins

Gotsis tore his ACL during his senior season at Georgia Tech and did not take part in any of the team drills in the offseason program. Kubiak said Gotsis should “be ready to go" when camp begins, but the Broncos could limit his work in camp and preseason games.

Gotsis is a player the Broncos want to be available in the defensive line rotation, and he could have a significant impact as a rookie. Kubiak has promised Gotsis’ snaps will be monitored and evaluated with an eye toward the regular season.

Pretty much all of the NFL teams report to their respective training camps this week and we get started with some football. Welcome back, real football. Woohoo!

For the Hall of Fame game and 1st week of the NFL preseason schedule, below is a guide to watch our 25 Yellow Jackets in games (I did not include local broadcasts with 1 exception) with some notes. The games broadcast live are in BOLD. (note, there are likely other taped replay opportunities during middle of night via NFL Network)...

Sunday, August 7, 8pmET, ESPN: Packers (Morgan Burnett) vs Colts (Chris Milton)...Milton's NFL debut as he tries to make the team as an UDFA

Thursday, August 11, 7pm, local affiliates: Redskins (none) at Falcons (Philip Wheeler)...Wheeler has had a nice, long career...just put this here as I know we have some Skins and Falcons fans on this board

Thursday, August 11, 7:30pm, NFL Network Live: Saints (Jamal Golden) at Patriots (Shaq Mason)

Thursday, August 11, 11pm, NFL Network Tape Delay: Broncos (Adam Gotsis, Vance Walker, Bay Bay Thomas) at Bears (none)...Broncos have the most Jackets on a NFL roster...Gotsis still rehabbing per reports from this past weekend...might not be ready for his NFL debut

Friday, August 12, 1pm, NFL Network Tape Delay: Panthers (Stephen Hill, Louis Young) at Ravens (Darren Waller)...Waller suspended from 1st 4 weeks of regular season by NFL...Hill's last chance to make a roster?

Friday, August 12, 4pm, NFL Network Tape Delay: Bucs (Daryl Smith) at Eagles (Andrew Gardner)...Gardner is quietly having a nice career...Smith just keeps on keeping on...still recall his pick for TD at Fred Sanford Toilet Bowl in the rain 16 years ago...my my, has it really been that long ago?

Friday, August 12, 7pm, NFL Network Live: Lions (Isaiah Johnson) at Steelers (none)...Johnson has a really good shot at making the game day roster this year...obviously needs a strong preseason

Saturday, August 13, 7am, NFL Network Taped: Vikings (Brandon Watts) at Bengals (Michael Johnson)...Watts needs a strong August or his NFL career could be in jeopardy

Saturday, August 13, 1pm, NFL Network Taped: Browns (Patrick Skov) at Packers (Morgan Burnett)...Skov will be an interesting one to watch as he tries to make the team as an UDFA

Saturday, August 13, 4:30pm, NFL Network Live: Seahawks (none) at Chiefs (DJ White)...White was drafted and debuts in his professional career

Saturday, August 13, 8pm, ESPN: Cowpunks (none, thank Buddha) at Rams (Zach Laskey)...Laskey tries for a second year to make the roster...maybe he'll punch Dez Bryant out this time

Sunday, August 14, 7:30am, NFL Network Taped: Colts (Chris Milton) at Bills (T.J. Barnes, Mario Butler)...Milton's 2nd game...both Butler and Barnes need good preseasons

Sunday, August 14, 7pm, NFL Network Live: Texans (none) at 49ers (DeAndre Smelter)...the long-awaited debut of Smelter in a Niners uniform

Wednesday, August 17, 1pm, NFL Network Taped: Chargers (Sneezy, Tyler Marcordes) at Titans (Derrick Morgan)...the pro debut of Marcordes

I will try to post a similar viewing schedule later in the month for Weeks 2 and 3. Note, still keeping an eye to see if Rod Sweeting gets picked up for a camp/tryout.

I kept looking for Jeremiah Attaochu. Finally found him on the list... looked over him a couple times at the bottom.

Good Luck to all these former Jackets

Things sounding positive about the Lions' Isaiah Johnson from HC Jim Caldwell... http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2016/...camp-quote-sheet-were-bigger-stronger-upfront

On S Isaiah Johnson taking a tougher road to get into the NFL: “I agree with you. He’s been constantly getting better, it just seems like every single day he works at it. He’s diligent about everything that he does in the weight room, the classroom work. Certainly he’s got an opportunity here and that’s what he’s fighting for.”

San Diego is giddy to have Ken Whisenhunt back as O-Coord. and calling plays for the Bolts... http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2016/jul/31/its-good-news-the-whis-is-back-in-town/

Whiz is credited for rejuvenating QB Philip Rivers' career when they worked together previously. Something to keep in mind for fellow fantasy drafters who can get Rivers late in the draft. And, the Bolts now have one of the deepest WR corps in the NFL to go along with future Hall of Famer, Antonio Gates at TE, and Woodhead & Gordon out of the backfield.

Shaq Mason back at practice and off PUP list... https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/news/82722/shaq-mason-begins-practicing-with-patriots.php

Shaq Mason was taken off the Patriots' PUP list Thursday and has promptly begun practicing with the team, Doug Kyed of NESN reports. (Doug Kyed on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Mason who started 10 games for the Patriots last year is expected to start for the Patriots at right guard during the regular season opener. The Patriots struggled with the offensive line throughout the season and the health of Mason will be important for the team.

DeAndre Smelter a full-go with the Niners... http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article92958372.html

One of the disappointments in spring was that receiver DeAndre Smelter was limited with a hamstring strain. He looked to be full go on Sunday and came up with a catch from Thad Lewis. At 220-plus pounds, Smelter is by far the most powerful receiver on the squad and he looks it when he's on the field. … That being said, DiAndre Campbell may have had the best day among the 49ers' young wideouts.

Great news!

Saints sign Jamal Golden... http://whodatdish.com/2016/08/03/report-saints-add-db-jamal-golden-ol-jordan-walsh/

Joel A. Erickson

Saints signed former Georgia Tech defensive back Jamal Golden, source says

9:56 AM - 3 Aug 2016

Golden, who was spotted at the team’s practice on Wednesday morning, went undrafted after spending five years at Georgia Tech. The 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back received a rookie minicamp invite from the Atlanta Falcons. However, nothing came of it. During his senior season, Golden started all 12 games at strong safety for the Yellow Jackets and led the secondary with 64 tackles.

Updates of note from Wednesday surfing...

  • Shaq Mason practices for the first time Wednesday...he was at backup RG
  • Knee injury still bothering Stephen Hill...this could be his final moments in the NFL
  • Louis (or now called "Lou") Young having a strong early camp so far with Carolina...looking good that he makes the roster
  • Patrick Skov is in a walking boot and missing some practice this week with a foot injury at Browns camp
  • DJ White continuing to impress with the Chiefs...likely won't start as a rookie, but is so far in good shape to make the team (still early of course)
  • With Torrey Smith the only lock as one of the 49ers starting WR's, Smelter's name is being kicked around as being another starting WR if he continues to do well and performs well in important preseason games...QB's Colin Kaepernick and Blane Gabbert will reportedly split time evenly throughout training camp and preseason games for new HC Chip Kelly to make the decision on who may be tossing balls to Smelter and the WR Corps

For some exhibition football that resembles D1A CFB in late December, the Hall of Fame game is tonight on ESPN at 8pmET. Chris Milton will be playing for the Colts and Morgan Burnett will be with his Packers.

TV announcers and affiliates for Preseason Week 1 coming up later this week... http://506sports.com/nfl.php?yr=2016&wk=p1

Hall of Fame Game canceled due to field concerns. An omen to the start of the NFL season?
