2016 G.T. Football(incldg. late previews, incoming freshmen, fall camp, articles, et al.)

I think there should be decimals and negative numbers allowed for jersey numbers. Taking numbers out to 2 or 3 decimal places would be a twist that would make boring sports like baseball more interesting. I'd love to see a defensive lineman with number negative 95.

Maybe, just maybe mind you, jersey numbers could change game to game. Perhaps, base them on your key statistics. Or, how many beers you had that week. Johnny Manziel would look great in a 294 jersey. Your key stats for uniform numbers could serve as incentive too. A defensive lineman with 0 sacks gets the number 0 for everybody to see. Shame him into playing better.

And, how about Roman numerals. Especially for those NFL marketing douchebags who think it is so cute to name Super Bowls with X, V, I, and all that baloney. I mean, RGIII complies. Maybe at Tech JT5 should be JTV and your son should be wearing a V jersey. But, most Tech people will not understand and think he's a fan of the Varsity, which would still make some sense.

I think names on the back of jerseys are tired too. I like statements better. Remember She Hate Me (which was poorly formed grammar, but probably applicable for professional football players generally speaking) from the old XFL? What about names on the back of jerseys like "Fartaramous" or "4 Time Felon" or "Currently Transitioning"?

Of course, as long as it has Nike or Under Armour on it and not Russell Athletic, the miserable Tech fashionista morons will be happy. Idiots.

Fun facts from the 2016 ACC Football Media Guide... http://raycomsports.com/sports_labs_docs/m-footbl/2016accfbguide.pdf

  • Georgia Tech has the 3rd most CFB Hall of Famers with 16 among ACC FB members (excludes ND). Only Pitt (25) and Syracuse (17) have more. Might Calvin Johnson be added one day in the next decade?
  • The fewest punts by a team in an ACC Championship Game? 2009...by both Clemson and Tech...neither team punted. My kind of game.
  • Tech has the 2nd most MEG appearances with 43 among ACC FB Members. Only Florida State (45) has more. Tech also has the 2nd most MEG wins (24) to FSU's 27.
  • Robert Lavette still is 4th in all-time rushing yards (4,066), 3rd in rushing TD's (45) and 1st in rushing attempts (914).
  • Tevin Washington ranks 1st in rushing TD's in a season (20 in 2012) by QB's. Joshua Nesbitt is 2nd at 18 in 2009. Tevin also has the most in career at 38. Nesbitt is tied with Cheater, Marquise Williams, for 2nd at 35.
  • Nesbitt is 1st in rushing yards for a career by a QB at 2,806. With a 1,000-yd rushing season this fall, JT5 will take over that #1 spot. Note, JT5 ran for 1,086 in 2014.
  • Tashard Choice is 1st in consecutive 100+ rushing yard games with 9. Hmmm...in my best Johnny Carson voice...I...did...not...know...that.
  • Rushing yards per carry for a career? 4 of the top 5 are A-Backs under CPJ...Orwin Smith 1st at 9.19...Robert Godhigh 2nd at 8.82...Roddy Jones 4th at 7.49...and Embry Peeples 5th at 7.32.
  • For a career, Joe Hamilton is 6th in pass efficiency with a passer rating at 148.19. And, his replacement, George Gutsy, is 10th at 143.64.
  • Here's a random find...Greg Lester has the most receiving yards in a game for a freshman in ACC history...193, vs Duke in 1987.
  • Calvin Johnson is tied for 7th for career receiving TD's at 28 (in 3 seasons).
  • Dez White (20.4) and Demaryius Thomas (19.5) are 4th and 5th in ACC career yards per reception. Each played 3 seasons. Though, the media guide appears to contradict itself on page 180.
  • Harrison Butker is 8th in career PAT's with 162. He needs 42 this upcoming season to take over the #1 spot. That should happen.
  • Durant Brooks still leads the ACC in career punting average yards per kick at 45.31.
  • Kelley Rhino, The Kamikaze Man, still ranks 4th in career punt return yards at 1,135. He also holds the record for most punt return attempts in a game - 9, vs The Citadel in 2001. Defenses love that statistic.
  • Speaking of defense (aka "real football players"), Big Play Willie Clay remains tied for 10th in ACC history with 16 career INT's. He had 9 INT's in 1991, which is tied for 5th in ACC history for a season.
  • Sneezy is 6th in career sacks at 31.5. Greg Gathers is right behind him at 7th with 31.0. Coleman Rudolph is 11th with 28.5. Marco Coleman (in 3 seasons) is 14th with 27.5. Eric Henderson is 19th with 25.5. Would love it if we could find anybody that resembles those guys.
  • Tech's 1998 defense returned 7 fumbles for TD...still not only an ACC record, but a NCAA record.
  • Tech has led the ACC in total offense (yds per game) in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2014. Only once (1999) had Tech done this prior to CPJ's arrival. The ONLY time Tech has led the ACC in total defense was 1984.
  • Tech has led the ACC in rushing offense every year since 2007, the year before CPJ arrived.
  • Tech has led the ACC in passing offense once...2001, with George Gutsy running the controls.
  • Tech has led the ACC in scoring in 1998, 1999, 2009, 2011, and 2014. Tech has led the ACC in scoring defense in 1984 and 1985 (Black Watch). That speaks volumes to me. It has been over 30 years since Tech led the ACC in scoring defense.
  • Joe Hamilton, Marco Coleman and Ken Swilling were named to the ACC's 50th Anniversary Team.
  • Among ACC FB members, Tech has played the most games against AP-ranked teams in history at 261. Louisville has only played 73 games against AP-ranked teams in its history.
Dear Buddha, please help me get through this terrible time of year.

I grant you nine National Titles in Football. You were robbed of five!

Feel better, now?

CPJ says A.J. Gray could be one of the best all-time players at Tech... http://wjbf.com/2016/07/21/paul-joh...f-the-all-time-great-players-at-georgia-tech/

“A.J. Gray probably had as good a spring as anybody on our football team,” Johnson said Thursday. “He was surviving last year on pure athleticism out there because he wasn’t sure what he was doing as a true freshman playing safety. I think he’s got the opportunity to be one of the all-time great players at Georgia Tech. If he can build off his spring, he had a tremendous spring, I think you’ll be excited to watch him play this fall.”

I've heard different Tech fans(some in absolute misery)whether side walking or graduates, say they would go 1-10 or 1-11 if that one was the last game of the year.

To me it's like playing them or not, which the A.D. has more control over. Would love to see it as a first game of the season, which might take an ultimatum and a dream.

IMHO, play them always and try to win every game we play with the same vengeance. Impossible, I realize, because the players and coaches are all human.

Coach Gailey told me once when my son asked him to beat Miami, VPI and Ga., that "we want to win them all" and "they all are equally important".

I wish it was that easy
I wasn't trying to imply it is easy, but that's the way of it. Richt created the best program in uGAs history, but he could never get over the peak and win the big one. But it is the best period ever. Beat them and you have a team that CAN beat almost anyone. We'll see if SmartA can do better.

I didn't read the new Media Guide....thought I heard recently that Tech is still in the top 20 in all-time wins, second to 'Bama in Bowl Victories?

Interestingly, there’s no mention of long snappers, holders and returners. Casey Wilson returns as a snapper and Ryan Rodwell handled holding duties. The return jobs are likely up in the air with Jamal Golden having graduated.

Would love to see it.

As I've covered before, we have (realistic) openings on the schedule in 2018 and 2020. I say "realistic" because while, for example, we have an opening on the 2019 schedule, I highly doubt we will schedule Auburn in addition to already having the Cesspool and Notre Dame on the schedule. Of course, 2019 might - and I stress "might" - be the season when a 9-game ACC FB schedule kicks in. We'll see...

It seems like a good fit for Auburn in those seasons as well considering in 2018 per futureschedules.com they only currently have Southern Miss and Alabama State scheduled and in 2020 they only have Southern Miss and Alabama A&M.

Auburn in 2019 has a neutral site game against Oregon scheduled at Cowpunks Stadium. In 2021 and 2022, they have Penn State. In 2023 and 2024, they have California.

So, a 2-game series with Auburn in '18 and '20 or at least 1 game (neutral site perhaps) with them in either of those 2 seasons makes sense for Tech I think.

Best road game I went to was the Auburn game 2005. Got there eary morning started drinking. ( maybe a little too much as it was a night game) saw a bus that said we could ride to the Stadium. Only problem after the game didn't know which bus it was and at 1:00 am finally found our car. Great game .

I will always remember that game for:

1) how dominant our defense was
2) an absolutely gorgeous TD catch by Calvin - early in the game to give us a lead IIRC
3) I believe it was Eric Henderson who the ESPN announcers advised had not heard from his family in NOLA since Hurricane Katrina had hit a few days earlier...to which, someone called ESPN during the game and late in the game the announcers advised that his family was all alive (could have been someone else but thinking it was EH)

A different hurricane (this time no pun intended) that season suspended the scheduled game at Miami on October 22nd. It was rescheduled for Nov. 19 and the Jackets went down and upset the Canes, who were ranked #3 in the nation at the time. One of the bigger upsets in Tech's history and one of the best moments of the CCG era.

Ahhhhh the memories...

Auburn leads the all-time series 47-41-4, though Tech won the last 2 games ('03 and '05), breaking a 9-game losing streak that went back to when we played 'em every year between '79 and '87 before the series was discontinued.

Not to get too far off subject....the Vandy people gave my son a t-shirt(all were so nice); W.F. played our fight song after the introductions and let my boy on the field after the game; Clemson gave us food in a Visitor's Tent with nice women, more than once; Middle Tenn. St. rolled out the hospitality; and for Aubie-let's say the Yellow Jacket nest planted under our seat(s)was not kind and slashing the outside mirror of my car, not too cool.

Incentive!

Tech picked to finish 6th in Coastal... http://augustafreepress.com/clemson-leads-acc-football-kickoff-preseason-poll/

North Carolina was selected the likely Coastal winner by 121 voters and finished with 1,238 total points, followed by Miami with 50 first-place votes and 1,108 points. Pitt received 14 first-place votes and was third in the balloting with 859 points.

Virginia Tech (three first-place votes) placed fourth with 697 points, followed by Duke (597), Georgia Tech (588) and Virginia (261). Two voters chose Duke to claim the Coastal Division, while one gave Georgia Tech the nod.

Given those two, I'd rather see Richt win Miami's 1st division title than uNC represent the Coastal.

But what this really means is GT is 75% guaranteed a top 3 finish or better. So we will beat one or both of uNC and Miami. good stuff.

More incentive!

No Jackets on the ACC Preseason All-ACC teams... http://www.tomahawknation.com/2016/7/27/12296312/preseason-all-acc-team-fsu-florida-state

Jackets receiving votes include...

BB Marcus Marshall (1)
C Freddie Burden
DE KeShun Freeman
DT Patrick Gamble
LB P.J. Davis
LB Brant Mitchell (1)
S A.J. Gray (2)
PK Harrison Butker

None of these would make a 2nd or 3rd team preseason All-ACC teams based on their voting. Interesting how different from a year ago this time. Lots to prove and Tech tends to do better when expectations are lower...though, I think we need to get over that and stop letting that be some kind of habit for us. That is, significantly underachieve when expectations are high.

At the ACC meetings, it was disclosed that GT had 260 or so games against top 25 teams, the most in our league...and Louisville the least at around 71 vs. top 25 all-time.

Google is an incredible tool to find things...and, so is wikipedia to research things... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP_Poll

The AP college football poll has a long history. The news media began running their own polls of sports writers to determine who was, by popular opinion, the best football team in the country at the end of the season. One of the earliest such polls was the AP College Football Poll, first run in 1934[3](compiled and organized by Charles Woodroof, former SEC Assistant Director of Media Relations) and it has run continuously from 1936.[4]
