FOOTBALL RECRUITING FROM RUSSELL

Signing day is now under six days away, at least the for the early signing period. While some targets (and Jahmyr Gibbs) are heading towards waiting until February.

Official (and unofficial visit) weekend will kick off tomorrow, and before we go spot by spot in the class, let’s look at the visitors for the weekend, starting with the two main unofficial, Creekside LB Tyson Meiguez and Mt. Zion OL Phillp Wilder.

Tyson is there to help close with his close friend and teammate Khatavian Franks.

Wilder will be on an unofficial visit for a multitude of reasons, but mainly so that if he decides to hold off on signing until February, that they still have the OV to use as they attempt to close the deal.

Wilder didn’t make the trip to Maryland this past weekend, I have confirmed. His visit will be Key in determining what the next step(s) are in his recruitment.

COMMITS:

Godby WR Avery Boyd
Lee County OT Wing Green
Dutchtown WR Nate McCollum
Lennard OT Michael Rankins
Biloxi OL Ryan Spiers
South Miami DE Khaya Wright

A quick note on Spiers, who will enroll early as we have reported now for quite some time- Spiers was offered a spot in the MS/AL game this week, but declined the invite.

His senior highlights will be up in the days to come, and for GT fans it will likely be the first time they are able to see Spiers at 280, not the 230 he played at in the past.

An additional visitor currently committed to a school in the Big Ten is also in the works, and his name will be released when the time is right.

On the offensive side of the ball, there is a second spot at QB open, but it is not likely to be open this time next week, barring a rather large surprise.

Jeff Sims or bust at the position. The Sims deal, and how quickly it materialized was one of the more interesting things I have seen in my time covering recruiting.

Norvell, known for doing more with less, has a chance to coach a QB that is closer to “more” than he is “less” and he essentially drops him within 72 hours of accepting the job.

Sims will enroll early at his school of choice, and has been hearing from several of the current commitments since going public with his decision on Wednesday.

Maryland remains in the mix.

The recruitment of the RB position for the other schools around Gibbs’ continues to develop quickly.

Four-star Fla. RB Henry Parrish decommitted from Pitt on Wed. Night, and s likely headed towards Gainesville.

There has been no resolution in the Zach Evans recruitment, but the fact is that Alabama has two commitments at the position too.

Texas A&M appears poised to land EJ Smith, which wild likely eliminate them from Evans’ recruitment unless they choose to take two.

That’s really the only drama remaining on the offensive side of the ball, other than the recruitment of Phillip Wilder, which is mentioned above.

Onto the defensive side of the ball…..

Wiggles had been committed to Georgia Tech for quite some time, but that is expected to change between now and next Wednesday.

The two sides have decided to part ways, as Wiggles and his camp continue to look for the best fit for him, both on and off the field.

His “Ga Tech commit” that was in both his twitter and instagram bio has disappeared, and in due time his new orange home will be public.

Of course, just yesterday Georgia Tech added two additional defensive linemen in their 2020 class, with Jared Ivey and Emmanuel Johnson both joining the fold.

Johnson spent the summer in the Atlanta-area working out in a space called “The Lab” that is popular among several elite-level prospects.

For a recruit that has been kept on the down-low for so long, Johnson is extremely familiar with several of the recruits in the class, and people that have seen him train there, rave about the improvement from the time he first got there.

Johnson is not available for comment at this time, as he is in the middle of one of the South Carolina post-season all-star games, but rest assured we will get you quotes as soon as possible.

As for Ivey, his commitment was much less of a surprise, especially for those that have been on this site since the summer.

I put my FutureCast in for him to end up at Georgia Tech the first day I met him at the 7v7 camp over the summer.

Ivey was looking around at the buildings, pointing to where his family members worked or used to work, and talking about the excitement around the Georgia Tech program, and the potential fit for him.

Elsewhere on the defensive line, Nazir Stackhouse appears to be focused on two things going into the early signing period: his grades, and UGA.

Albany Casey’s commitment to many cane out of left field, and left a part of the fanbase blue about their prospects for the remainder of the 2020 class. For a team lacking size and depth, Casey makes perfect sense.

The staff hasn’t gone by to see him, and he won’t take an official visit either. He will, however, report to campus as soon as he is able.

Moving on, a large group of coaches are heading to the Birmingham area tonight to meet Alabama “commit” Jayson Jones. I’ve been told that there is no way that he signs an NLI with Alabama, especially if he hopes to sign in December.

Jones has been committed to Alabama for so long, that members of his family and people around him love the program so much that they have become numb to the situation around them.

He hasn’t been visited by Alabama’s staff, and during those gameday visits that he had posted about on social media, nobody from the staff spoke to him.

The visit tonight looms large for a multitude of reasons, with one being the goal of gaining the support of Jones’ family, which is something that has been very difficult to do in the past.

Jones already used his official visit back in the summer, so if he is in-fact going to sign an NLI on Wednesday, this is his last meeting with the coaches before that.

Other targets remain on the DL, such as Jeremiah Wright and Jerzhan Newton.

Wright’s committed to Auburn, and will sign in February, but if Georgia Tech is going to flip him, they’ve got a steep Hill to climb.

Newton’s recruitment has really taken some interesting turns of late, as he visited Illinois this past weekend, and has finalized another official visit for this weekend.

At defensive back, three main targets remain in Javier Morton, Derek Bermudez, and Jalen Harrell.

From everything I hear in Hialeah, it sounds as if Harrell is likely to stick with the Canes, barring some kind of surprise. That won’t stop the staff, and several commits from being in his ear until the very end.

Regardless of when Morton decides to sign, I would be very surprised if it isn’t with the Yellow Jackets. He’s been on campus several times, loves what they are doing, and sees himself fitting in with what they are doing defensively.

Other schools trying to get in the picture have a steep Hill to conquer.

The closer that early signing day gets, it seems the chances Georgia Tech has with Derek Bermudez continue to improve.

Bermudez, Jeff Sims, and Miles Brooks all played on the same 7v7 team, and could very-well all end up on the same team again.

At the very least, two of the three are expected to be on the Flats when freshmen report to campus in the summer.
