Georgia Tech’s coaching staff hit the road on Monday and Tuesday. Coaches were scattered across Georgia, Florida and many other states.
CBC did the most travel hitting the Midwest, Oklahoma and Louisiana in just two days.
Out of all that travel the most interesting guy who could visit GT is DT Gerald Wilbon (6-3 305) from Destrehan, he is a soft verbal to Texas, but he is interested in GT… The Longhorns also may be unsure on him and they took another DT commit today from DE/DT Malcolm Roach. Texas is scuffling so bad in recruiting right now that their targets are looking at GT and other programs that don’t have the same cache. Every HS coach in Texas and Louisiana believes Strong will be gone so they are pushing kids elsewhere.
Cook is also still heavily on Donavaughn Campbell, three-horse race with LSU and Bama. Unfortunately LSU is having the best season in a really long time moving Les Miles off the hot seat. Campbell would REALLY like to play with Christian at GT, so that is a huge X-factor. If anything happens it will be the week of NSD IMO with him.
Cook has been trying to rebuild in the pipeline GT used to have to kids in Louisiana.
CJS was in the Conyers/Covington area recruiting on Monday and Tuesday. He has some interesting 2017 targets but the Jackets have not really offered any yet.
CRR was down in the panhandle recruiting working on Romeo Finley. The four-star safety is a GT lean, but he is still monitoring what is going on in Miami and with the Gators if they have space for him.
CLO went down to Mainland HS to see DL Jachai Polite and DT Kevin McCrary. McCrary may be on the smaller side, but he is a high motor guy. Polite is a tweener type like Gotsis who could grow into a DT, but has a good frame for SDE as well.
As far as spots go, 1 QB, 1-2 WR/ATH/BB type like Quintez Cephus or Malik Staples, 1-2 OLs, 1-2 big DL (i.e. DTs), 1 CB, 1 S and then some attrition top off recruiting. That later will clear up after the UGA game when PJ sits down and finds out who is staying and who is going.
QB is the position you all ask me about the most, top two guys on the board are Jay Jones (5.7 three-star) from McAdory HS (Ala.) and Colerain HS (Ohio) QB Deshaunte Jones. CBC went to see Deshaunte this week and his stock has been rising lately. Jay Jones has a ton of offers, but GT is probably the only QB offer.
FOOTBALL TEAM
Lots of rumors and people pissed off on the team like anytime you lose. Most of what you are hearing is frustrations. I’m not sure what staff changes will happen if any. Obviously CPJ has had some issues with CRR, but he is still here so… Billy O’Brien having to go back to college could cause Roof to be in play with him wherever he would surface (think Maryland or UVA). O’Brien WANTS to stay in the NFL and has no desire to return to college, but work is work. I think Roof stays, CRR no clue, CAM always has some LB coaching options that are lateral moves and CMP got some love last year from OK, so it will be interesting to see if it stays intact.
CPJ still wants more of an attacking style of defense and I’ll be curious to see how that plays out in these final games. CPJ has been more vocal in the last few weeks with the defense and once again they are playing better…
People have been asking me about a WR transfer, Mike Summers COULD opt out and go play somewhere as a senior if he wants. As far as I know there has been no decision made by either CPJ or Summers, but that is the rumor circulating and there is some substance to it. He will graduate and be able to play immediately somewhere IF he leaves, but this is a situation where he would really need to know where he wants to land prior to leaving. He has family on the site so I don’t want to speculate as to the reasoning or anything, but he should do what is best for him. GT has plenty of depth at WR going forward, but this probably explains the interest and the waiting on offering Quentin Cephus.
BASKETBALL
Next week the signing period begins and Christian Matthews, Josh Okogie and Romello White should all be signed, sealed and delivered to GT. Two spots left for a big and a point guard. It looks like GT will once again delve into the transfer pool to satisfy those spots with center being a little less of an issue with Ben Lammers and the multiple 4s already on the roster.
Very anxious to see the team, BG has been really pleased with how the team is developing and MGH is getting back to old form and will be in a better spot as a second or third option offensively behind Nick Jacobs and Adam Smith. BG thinks he has a bubble team and has told ppl around the program as much so that is the expectation going into the 2015-16 season...
