(Non-GT)Atlanta Braves Baseball....new beginnings

Well, they managed to get the W last night vs. the Chi Cubs. However, losing 5 of 6 to the Fish and Phils dropped them back into the MLB cellar. The Bravos may not have 30 wins at the AS break. How sad is that?

Not sad at all. This team was flushed by the brass at the top in hopes of building for the future. When you flush another season, then you get what you expect. Should be no surprise.

A bunch of these guys won't be with this club in a couple of years when the brass is betting we will start to see significant improvement and back to contending. I'm most interested in the young guys who are likely to be there in 2-3 years as part of this rebuilding effort. The Braves are 21.5 games out in the division and 18 games out in the Wild Card race. We aren't going to postseason. So, I'm rooting for the young'uns as stated individually and for the team to get the overall #1 pick...and as early as possible in rounds 2 thru 40.

sooner or later the young players will start getting to Atlanta later this year. But can we really expect to see any real rebuilding until the next manager is put in place?

Development at the AA and AAA levels (and maybe even Rookie & Class A) are what's important now. I don't think who manages the Atlanta Braves makes any diddly of difference now or perhaps even for the next 18 months. Though, it would be good if the Braves could get a guy with a solid background of rebuilding from the ground stages and working with young talent to mold them into solid professionals. Somebody who can do what Ned Yost has done at KC, for instance.

Have you two seen what at Gwinnett? I was at the game the other night and it's ugly... very ugly. I hope there's talent at A and AA because anyone of value was either traded or called up from the GBraves earlier this spring.

So my $100 bet that the Altanta Braves will lose 100 or more games this year is safe ?

Sorry to answer a question with another question, but...

...you only bet $100?

(I mean, you had access to my credit card and all after all)

:p

With all your wives, I believe you say that every month...but, have your fun. Just keep it under 622 thousand this time please.

The Dodgers have acquired minor league righty Alec Grosser from the Braves, Los Angeles announced on Twitter. He becomes the player to be named later in the deal that sent Bud Norris out west.

Grosser serves to balance out the young talent changing hands in the swap. Outfielder Dian Toscano and cash also went to the Dodgers in the arrangement, with minor league pitchers Caleb Dirks and Phil Pfeifer constituting Atlanta’s side of the bargain.

The 21-year-old Grosser was an 11th-round selection in the 2013 draft. He had shown some promise early in his professional career at the Rookie ball level, but failed to master the Class A level last year. That led to a return to the Appalachian League this season, where Grosser has experienced pretty ugly results in a tiny sample.

With another road win in Chicagoland last night, the Braves are now "only" 6 games under .500 on the road this season. You'd think games at The Ted are like a road game these days. We are 21 games under .500 there.

So difficult to read them on a given day. They rough up Chris Sale who was 14-2 with a sub 3 e.r.a.
11 runs scored and with Wisler on the mound, you'd think that the Sox wouldn't get 8?

Listened to the starting lineup, thought ours was more competitive with Freeman, Markakis, Aybar, Inciarte, Garcia, et al. The other team is now 44-41.

Braves hit the 30 mark! WTG!!!

Only 1/2 game behind the Twins!

Movin' on up...
backpedal

Regardless of the Red Sox’ views on Rodriguez, the team figures to be in the hunt for at least one rotation arm. As Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports, Boston has been in touch with the Padres, who could market Drew Pomeranz and/or Andrew Cashner (though the latter had a really rough outing tonight). Also, senior VP of baseball ops Frank Wren is said to have watched both Rich Hill of the Athletics and Julio Teheran of the Braves recently.

Wow!!! 2 of 3 to enter the ASB!!!

31 wins at the break!

The future is looking good!!!

Braves take 3 out of 4 prior to break against two winning Chicago teams....

In the event the Braves shop right-hander Julio Teheran, one major league source told Cafardo, “The Braves don’t want anyone’s B- list. It’s got to be at the top of anyone’s prospect list, and it just looks complicated.” As a strong, in-his-prime performer who’s controllable through 2020 on an extremely team-friendly contract, Teheran is one of rebuilding Atlanta’s best assets.

TODAY: Bonifacio has been outrighted off the Braves’ 40-man roster and assigned to Triple-A, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets. Bonifacio had the option of rejecting this assignment and becoming a free agent, but he will indeed head to Gwinnett.

Gwinnett in first place in division.

Have you looked at the division? The GBraves are bad. Bonifacio will improve them. Ruiz is about the only MLB player on that team. It appears to me that most of the real prospects in the organization are at AA or lower. There is no comparison between the pre-big-club Blair and what you are seeing now.

Rangers have inquired about Julio Tehran.
-------------------------------------------------------
Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino left tonight’s action with what appeared to be an oblique issue. As MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweets, the preliminary expectation is that he’ll require a DL stint. The injury comes at an inopportune time for Vizcaino’s trade chances, as he has already missed action of late and has struggled when he has been available. Over his last five appearances, Vizcaino has allowed five earned runs on eight hits and seven walks while recording only a pair of strikeouts. Once viewed as one of the best relief arms on the market, it seems increasingly likely that he’ll end up staying in Atlanta for the rest of the season.

Teams have shown interest in Lucas Harrell, although his showcase start vs. Rockies last night did not go very well.
---------------------------------
Freddie Freeman and Julio Teheran are once again at the center of swirling trade rumors, though this time it appears that the rumors are less bullish about their potential departure than the last time we heard rumors. According to Jon Heyman, the Braves don’t appear to be too enthusiastic about the idea of trading Teheran, and Freeman is back to being considered "off-limits." However, Heyman did mention that the Braves are trying to move Nick Markakis and Erick Aybar, so there’s that.

LOL. Wasn't it just last year when Hart uttered wtte: "this isn't going to be a total rebuild?" So much for that... Trust... a valuable entity in very short supply.

Despite hitting the disabled list Saturday with an oblique injury, 25-year-old Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino isn’t out of play for the deadline, tweets FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman. Although Vizcaino has struggled of late, his numbers this year – 3.00 ERA, 11.75 K/9, 5.5 BB/9 and 54.8 percent ground-ball rate in 36 innings – are mostly outstanding and he’s under control via arbitration eligibility through 2019. Those factors, not to mention his $897,500 salary this year, could combine to make Vizcaino rather appealing to reliever-needy teams.
The Orioles are interested in adding a left-handed reliever, writes Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Kubatko lists the Braves’ Eric O’Flaherty, whom the O’s were previously interested in, and free agent Joe Beimel as possibilities outside the organization.

Tehran, 7 shutout innings.
1-0 Braves win.

Braves righty Julio Teheran exited tonight’s start with what is being described as right lat tightness, as MLB.com’s Mark Bowman writes. Teheran had been throwing well, once again, before the issue arose. We’ve already seen plenty of cold water thrown on the idea that he’ll be traded, and this injury — even if it’s minor — could help seal the deal (or, rather, the lack thereof).
---------------------------------------------------------------
Braves loading up on catching, in case AJ P. is traded! Teams calling about their lefty relievers.

Standings update...Braves opening up a little space of late...

BRAVES - (31 games under)
Twins - 3.5 games back (24 under)
Reds - 4.5 games back (22 under)
Rays - 5.5 games back (20 under)

Yes. If you turn the standings upside down, it gives some fun in the race. People from Australia would love it.

(first time I ever saw a map like the one above was when at a manufacturing facility about 12 years ago in Perth...fun stuff)

Former Brave Peter Moylan can relate well to the standings being from down under and the Braves at the top of it.

Barring a knockout offer, it doesn’t look like the Braves will move Ender Inciarte at the deadline, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman writes. Inciarte received some trade interest even after Atlanta acquired him from the D’Backs last offseason, though a hamstring injury sidelined him for a month and he hasn’t delivered much at the plate. Still, Inciarte has so much defensive value in center field that the Braves consider him to be a strong piece for the future.

The Braves become a buyer at the trade deadline? Chris Sale? Here is the rumor.....
Sale’s issues aside, he’s unsurprisingly still drawing interest from elsewhere as the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline nears. The White Sox are continuing to discuss him with other teams, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). One team with interest in Sale is the rebuilding Braves, via reports from both Chris Cotillo of SB Nation and David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Twitter links). Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported earlier Saturday that the White Sox want five top-caliber prospects for Sale, whose years-long track record of on-field brilliance has continued this season. Sale’s strikeout rate (8.73 per nine innings) is at its all-time lowest mark, but he continues to limit walks (1.96 per nine) and runs (3.18 ERA). He’s also controllable for extremely team-friendly dollar figures through 2019.

This ought to help his trade value.....
SUNDAY: The White Sox have issued a five-day suspension to Sale as a result of his actions Saturday. He’ll be out of action through Wednesday.

“Chris has been suspended for violating team rules, for insubordination and for destroying team equipment,” Hahn stated. “While we all appreciate Chris’ talent and passion, there is a correct way and an incorrect way to express concerns about team rules and organizational expectations.”

Maybe the Sox will take Hector Olivera off our hands?

The Braves are “aggressively shopping” Jeff Francoeur, Erick Aybar and left-handed relievers, a rival executive tells Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link). Reports from just a few days ago suggested the Braves valued Francoeur’s leadership too much to deal him, though I would speculate that Atlanta could see what it could get for Francoeur now and then try to re-sign him in the offseason. Aybar would seem to have limited trade value given his horrible year at the plate, as his brief hot streak in June gave way to more struggles in July. Southpaws Hunter Cervenka and Ian Krol have generated some trade buzz already, and it’s possible Atlanta could be trying to sell high on Dario Alvarez.

The Braves have the day off before starting a 2-game series in the Twin Cities tomorrow which can be marketed as The Battle For The Bottom (and no stech81, this is not a porn show). It is a 2-game series and not a 3-game series because apparently fans should not be exposed to 3 games between these 2 teams.

Current upside down standings...

BRAVES - (-33)
Twins 4.5 games back (-24)
Rays & Reds 5.5 games back (-22)

Atlanta is 33-66. Dead square at 1/3 winning percentage as it preps for its 100th game of the season tomorrow. Current pace is to finish at 54-108.

The last time the Braves lost 100+ games was 1988 (54-106...thank goodness 2 games were rained out and not made up). No Atlanta team has ever lost more than 106. The Boston Braves in 1935 went 38-115. Man, they sucked. Only 1 other Atlanta Braves team lost 100+ and that was in 1977 (61-101). But there were A LOT of 90+ loss seasons between 1975 and 1990...10 of 'em in fact.

Please allow me to fill your potentially boring summer with one of my "short stories":

Coppy(and the)Cat....
I was listening to the 9 volt transistor radio w/out headphones outside Sunday, so this "strange pussy-cat" could listen to the Snitker report with Coppy the G.M. as a guest. Other than counting the long hairs on the cat(boredom with the Braves), we both listened intently for any interruptions that might shed light on the Presidential race in November. Coppy stated he would only be shopping soon to be expired contracts, not Freeman or Julio. The cat seems to speak fluent Spanish, which might put Trump off, however fits in perfectly for these parts. Also, a third language of Japanese might be present, as I thought I heard her purring about "winonesoon" or get your son to bring out some darn water since it's 100 degrees out here!

Moral of the story, if there is any....don't count your cat hairs before the deadline.
