Cross Country...do we really need this "sport"?

I am one of *those* supporters who cares about all of Tech Athletics, not just FB and MBB, as I know some of you are as well. Having said that, I guess I've never understood Cross Country. I don't get it. I don't understand why this "sport" is funded and men's & women's soccer is not. At least with soccer, you'd have fans, some matches on TV and with Tech being an internationally recognized institution and a diverse student population in a metropolis, it seems like it would be a perfect match. I mean, according to the Dwags back in the early days of message boards around 1996, they claimed our student population was 90% Asian. They were wrong of course. It is 92% Asian. But, I digress.

I mean, have any of you ever watched a Cross Country event? What do they even call it anyway? It's not a game. It's not a "match". I can't tell you who my favorite Georgia Tech Cross Country runner is in over 40 years of following Tech Athletics because I can't tell you who any of them have been. I've never been sitting at a table with other Tech fans and discussed how the Cross Country teams will do this upcoming season. I've certainly never wagered on a cross country event. And, that alone should eliminate it from even being considered as a "sport".

When's the last time any of you had heart palpitations over how Tech's Cross Country teams are doing? Have you ever written a letter to the Athletic Director demanding better performance from the Cross Country teams or the head coach (whoever that is) should be fired? I don't think I've ever gotten mad about one of our Cross Country team members transferring out of Tech. I know for a fact I have no clue whatsoever what our Cross Country recruiting rankings are.

Cross Country...not a sport. It's a bunch of people running in a field some place....which, by the way, seems really odd for a school sitting in the middle of a metropolis and the closest field is many miles away. But, I digress.

So your saying there are other sports beside football?

Yes. There is badminton, which I consider to be one of the greatest sports ever. The fast pace of the shuttlecock going back and forth over the net is exhilarating. Plus, any sport that Asians dominate works for me.

Btw, have you ever heard people say something like "oh, all they take at that school is classes like underwater basket weaving." They say it as a put down. Like it's easy. Now, wait a dang minute. I think weaving a basket underwater would be challenging as hell. Sounds difficult to me.

O.K., I agree with you on soccer. GT should expand the payola for two more sports.

Having been on a H.S. Track Team(had to play a second sport to go with baseball), we called them "Meets". Can't say that I have witnessed an Alan Drosky coached event. C.C. competes today in the ACC Championships in Tally-Assee in about 20 minutes from now, Men's 8k and Women's 6k.

When T&F starts next spring, I will delve into trying to find out if Brod. Snoddy is running or sprinting during his last semester. These are both competitive sports in the ACC, but you realized that already. You did make me laugh! Let our buddy know that beer is not served at the finish line.

Thanks, mate.

ARBY'S...WE HAVE THE MEETS!

(ok, it was lame...I know...but, it was there and I had to do it)

More reason why I wish soccer was a part of our athletic program offerings at Tech... http://www.ramblinwreck.com/genrel/120315aaa.html

Women's cross country has 1 international student-athlete on its roster (from Sweden...aren't they always though? :)) and men's cross country has zero international student-athletes on its roster. More reason - along with not being able to wager on it - why cross country should be dumped at Tech and men's & women's soccer needs to be established. Either that, or even better, add ping pong and badminton.

Truth be told, as a young 'n, cut commercial lawns for a man who owned properties(one being an oil company, which had a ping pong man cave in it). He was a zen master in the sport, played internationally. Taught me, trained me until I won a match. Lessons were over! In that sport to be ultra competitive, you must nail the ends or edges of the table for no return possible. This lesson brought to you by "Slicers", we clip our meats tighter than Subway or even Blimpies-that way you won't fill up with too much protein before your golfing match.

Seriously, I posed the question to Drad once about soccer(as I was trying to get Gate 1 named after Walter Banks at AMC, before he retired from our hoop teams). He said that I had a point about the Atlanta area, the strength already within the conference and our student populous having global numbers. Claimed the feasibility study showed not enough revenue to be generated with previous numbers. I spoke of how it could have an extended reach beyond domestically and bring our diverse young people together. I mentioned only three of the 16 sports actually sustain themselves, excepting title 9 in one of them. Thought we could turn the land over near 14th St. where softball was at Glynco(Glenn). Guess he was too much about infrastructure opposed to expansion?

The new A.D. is not accessible, for my efforts up to now!

The Women's T. & F. squad went over to Alabama and placed 3rd in their first meet of the season.

Had no idea we started now? Didn't know Drosky coaches the ladies too!
