THE FLATS –
Georgia Tech baseball will honor Georgia Tech Hall of Famer and Major League Baseball relief pitcher Jim Poole, who passed away from ALS last year, on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m.against Boston College.

The Yellow Jackets will hold a pregame ceremony recognizing the life and legacy of Poole, honor his family, and also feature a Jim Poole “21” sign giveaway for fans. The ceremony will begin approx. 20 minutes prior to first pitch so fans are encouraged to arrive early with gates opening at 11:30 a.m.

Poole arrived on The Flats in 1985 and had an immediate impact, as Georgia Tech baseball would win the first of four-straight ACC Tournament Championships. During his four years, he pitched in 120 games and struck out 263 batters in 188 innings. He still ranks first in the Tech record book with 22 career saves, including 10 as a junior and nine as a senior. He was named all-ACC his last two seasons. Poole would be enshrined into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame just nine years later in 1997.

A stellar worker in the classroom, Poole elected not to turn professional after being selected in the 34th round of the 1987 MLB Draft by the LA Dodgers, and returned to Georgia Tech for his senior year, recording a 2.03 ERA and 113 strikeouts in only 71 innings. Once again, the LA Dodgers would call his name in the 1988 MLB Draft, this time taking him in the ninth round. He would return to graduate from the Institute with a degree in electrical engineering in 1990.

Poole played 11 years in the major leagues, predominantly with the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, and San Francisco Giants. In 431 games played, he finished with 22 victories and a 4.31 ERA, as well as 256 strikeouts and four saves. He helped pitch Cleveland to two American League Championship Series (1995, 1998), making it to the 1995 World Series where he would face the Atlanta Braves.

Following his retirement at the end of the 2000 season, Poole returned to Georgia Tech to join the Alexander-Tharpe Fund as a fundraiser and supporter of the baseball program. He then began serving as the pitching coach at Johns Creek High School in 2010, teaching many young men about pitching mechanics, while also conveying his personal pitching philosophy.

He later joined the business world as a Personal Wealth Advisor for the Baseball Division of BIP Wealth.

After being diagnosed with ALS in 2021, Poole worked tirelessly to raise awareness for the disease. In addition to serving on MLB ALS boards, he also worked with Georgia Tech, who together hosted an ALS Awareness Day during the 2022 baseball season, with Tech wearing Jim Poole shirts and both teams wearing honorary wristbands. Professional players also wore the shirt. Tech later designated the number 21 each year to be worn by a student-athlete who exemplify Poole’s ideals – self-determination, a strong academic work ethic, and high moral fiber on and off the field.

Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, with an estimated 30,000 people living with ALS in the United States at any given time. Primarily affecting people between the ages of 40 and 70, ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. There is no known cure.

FOOTBALL Let me tell y'all a little story about a 5-4 team once upon at time...

coming off a disappointing loss at Virginia Tech, and all that team did was reel off three straight wins in November over the Canes, the Pack and them dirty Dawgs, followed up by a win in the Camellia Bowl to finish the 2024 season 9-4 and propel itself into the 2025 season in which it went 15-1 on the way to the ACC Championship and National Championship!

Yes, that team might be the fictional Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on my PS5 College Football 25 dynasty, but so what. As they say, art imitates life!

I'm sorry guys. As I texted Kelly a little bit ago, I'm pretty down in the dumps after that effort today in Blacksburg and where the season sits at this point, and I just want to try to have a little fun to hopefully lift your spirits and my own spirits.

Anyway, working on my Big Plays and Takeaways now and should have it online before my head hits the pillow tonight. Had to take a break from college football after that game I watched earlier today. I try to not write emotionally if I can avoid it.

Can we talk about 2026 Bobby Dodd reseating and club/suite costs?

Got preliminary info on what it’s going to take to re-up my 4 club tix in CL4. $10,000 per seat over 5 years. Speakeasy club seats $25,000 per seat. North endzone suites that seat 16 people? Half a million over 10 years. We struggle to sell 25,000 season tix. What on earth are they thinking? I’ll be back in the Upper East. This is unreal. Do we have enough fans to do this? I fail to see this being successful. Is it too early to worry about this? Thoughts?

Is posting this thread after a bad loss the worst part of your week?

KQ- So what has happened is I keep forgetting on Thursday to post the link because we have media on Thursday and the reminder on my phone hits while I'm driving and I never get to it. Then usually someone DMs or PMs me about it during the game and I'm like crap. Then I'm crossing my fingers GT doesn't lose the game or get hammered.

Is Pyron not just as good as we thought or is a lot of this just a lack of experience? He was dreadful today.

KQ- Injured both lower and upper body and just didn't play well on top of that. He would tell you that himself. He was pretty gimpy all week and even during warmups and was having trouble driving the football on throws. That wasn't the kid who played up there 2 years ago health-wise, but it sucks because the ACC doesn't have injury reports and Key is tight-lipped rightfully about that stuff to keep teams from teeing off on his players who are dinged.

The reality is as the game went along he seemed to get even gimpier and they probably needed to pull him for Philo much sooner than they did.

I know Brent addressed not challenging the QB sneak because the spot was correct on the 25, but that wasn’t the issue, it was the chain gang only making them get 9 yards instead of 10 for the 1st down from the 34 to the 25 yard line. Was the staff aware of that part of it or later made aware of that?

KQ- They knew what was going on but had very little recourse live. If he does something then they probably get a penalty and VT gets a first down anyway.

So acknowledging how difficult play calling gets with different QBs and injuries, os it fair to say that Buster hasn’t put guys in position to succeed as much as last year, especially in 4th and 1 situations when it has been one shotgun handoff failure after another? Guys have to make blocks sure, but it’s easy for the D to get penetration when you telegraph the A gap handoff every time. It is also tough to watch so many opponents hit trick plays for big yardage but GT really hasn’t dialed anything up.

KQ- I saw Jamal Haynes losing it on the sideline after one of those stops. They were clearly frustrated and the rollouts were more effective, but they really miss Haynes King as the eraser in those spots as well with his legs and arms. Zach was gimpy running and Philo is okay running but is the slowest of the three so Buster has to figure it out. Jet-motion gives or whatever you have to do to create some space.

Hypothetically say Haynes King has a setback and today’s version of offense has to play the last 3 games. O/U 0.5 more wins? The defense played great, you almost feel like you wasted that performance because it’s hard to expect the D to be any better than they were today outside of maybe one drive where the tight end got free down the seam a few times.

KQ- I think you can play and win against NC State with Aaron Philo. I think it will be very hard against UGA and Miami without Haynes King and with Pyron really banged up and probably out for a bit.

Are you the one in the press box slipping Buster the note to run it up the middle on 3rd & 1? And then slipping the same note to the opposing DC? Just kidding, of course…is this CBF’s stubbornness or CBK’s?…especially as the game progresses & it’s obvious the OL doesn’t have that mojo working that day.

KQ- I love that people think Key is calling the offense when they do that, he isn't. You can tell by some of the reactions on the sideline by various people who called it. I'll leave the comment there.

Do you think mysteriously disappearing a coach the day before a game is a distraction that can lead to things like critical drops?

KQ- I explained this on YouTube but multiple players were vomiting before the game and during the game in the locker room with some kind of stomach bug including #8 who rarely drops a pass and had two critical drops. He was sick as hell and tried to gut it out.

Pyron just does not seem to be a very good QB at this level. Heart, dedication, leadership, I think he has it all and really wants to be the guy but just don’t think he has the talent for this level. I think it says a lot that he has stayed at GT this whole time but I think it may have been best for him to transfer down somewhere that he could be potentially starting. Why did it take so long today after so many issues and bad drives today for them to give Philo a chance? I’ve always believe you when you say Key will do and is going to do anything and everything he can to win here even if it means firing his mom but there’s some things that still show like he may be in a little over his head. Busters play calling seems to be in a sophomore slump and maybe part of that is Kings injury but I don’t think that’s all of it. Some decisions making by Key is questionable at times. Just wondering what comes next to help Key start to turn the corner on this team. Idk if it’s coaching changes or what but it seems like something has to happen. It’s year 2. More of his guys are coming in. Maybe we start to see more results over the next 3 years if he makes it. Concerned about the QB position after king is gone. Think it nay be a 5-7 season if he doesn’t make it back

KQ- Zach Pyron beat VT with the same coach in Lane Stadium two years ago when he was healthy. He was 19/32 for 253 yards and a TD and the game up 27 points on D that day. What was the difference, they had a running game in that one and Zach was healthy. The Hokies had a terrible run defense and GT couldn't get any yards on the ground. That was the major difference along with him not being 100%. We saw how much the offense struggled with Haynes King banged up or when had an off day like the Clemson game last year.

You’ve seen the footage on the suspect VT 4th down…what on earth does GT/BATT/Key do with that?

KQ- Push the league to suspend the people involved and have them banned from ever working a CFB game again.

Could College Sports survive as a whole if the SEC and B1G went out in its own and left the NCAA?

KQ- I am not sure if the SEC and B1G would survive such a move. They will need at least 60ish teams to make it viable where enough people still care otherwise it turns into the USFL.

Is it time for FSU to eat some Crow and apologize to the ACC?

KQ- I think everyone is enjoying them eating dog shit every week on the field. lol

If you’re Brent key, what are the top 3 positions you go after when the portal opens?

KQ- Linebacker, WR, DT

FOOTBALL We are not a good team right now. Just aren’t.

This was embarrassing. Buster has zero flow to his plays calls, zero imagination. Our TE’s clearly have zero clue who to block.

D, besides two bone head plays, manned up today.

This was a winnable game. Very disappointing.

Continued self inflicted mistakes during the game on ST’s. Our punter has a hang time average of .5 seconds. It’s maddening as a fan right now.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING GT commitment to visit Michigan this weekend

It's an official visit, too. Norris continues to report solidity to GT despite interest from Michigan, Miami, NC State and others.

"My relationship with GE is still strong," Norris told Rivals tonight. "I feel like they didn't stop recruiting me because I'm committed to them."

Punt and Punt Return

Can we please change up something punt and punt return? Rodney Shelley has been pretty darn good at corner but he’s tired when returning punts after playing defense. Shanahan used to do a rugby punt with his right foot I think. I would rather rugby punt the ball for 40 yards then net 30 yards or less every punt. I don’t know the last time he forced a fair catch that wasn’t on a pooch punt trying to pin a team deep. He punts line drives that are returned every single time and we only net very few yards. Just rugby punt it . He used to do that… I think
