Full Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior outfielder Jake DeLeo (Norwalk, Conn./Avon Old Farms School) earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for his terrific series against Clemson, the league announced Monday.

DeLeo helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a series win over the Tigers, hitting .500 on the weekend with six hits, three doubles and two home runs for three RBI. He slugged 1.250 with a .600 on-base percentage versus the Tigers and struck out just once on the weekend while drawing three walks.

For the week, the Norwalk, Conn. native hit .444 with three home runs and seven total extra-base hits.

DeLeo is having a sensational junior campaign that includes a team-best .436 batting average that ranks third in the ACC and top-25 nationally. He also leads the conference in hits (44) and total bases (79), ranks second in doubles (11), fifth in slugging percentage (.782) and sixth in home runs (8).

DeLeo and Georgia Tech head out for another four-game road swing, beginning on Tuesday, March 28 against Georgia State. The game will be played at Coolray Field, home of the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate Gwinnett Stripers, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

BASEBALL Weekend Thread: GT 5 CLEM 14 FINAL

Had plans of getting out to Rusty Chandler today for the series opener, but something came up last minute with Emory that she just can't miss. With camp season, spring football, etc. all coming up, I couldn't tell her no this time.

Weather pending I plan to be at one of the other games this weekend.

Onto the weekend preview. . . . . . .

STARTERS:

FRI: RHP Dawson Brown (Jr., 1-1, 9.97 ERA) vs. RHP Austin Gordon (So., 0-1, 5.84 ERA)
SAT: RHP Luke Schmolke (Fr., 2-0, 9.64 ERA) vs. LHP Tristan Smith (Fr., 0-0, 3.86 ERA)
SUN: RHP Jackson Finley (r-So., 1-1, 3.32 ERA) vs. LHP Caden Grice (Jr., 0-0, 4.00 ERA)

LINEUP for Friday night-

CF DeLeo
DH Campbell
RF Reid
LF Dispigna
1B Finley
3B Compton
C Rubenstein
2B Romano
SS Jackson

Unsure the reason for it, but Cam Cannarella is NOT in the lineup for Clemson tonight.

He is their unquestioned offensive leader, leading the team in runs, hits, RBI, and total bases among several other categories.

He also is tied for the team lead in stolen bases (13) with Benjamin Blackwell.

Blackwell enters the weekend with a .318/.414/.412 slash and 12 RBI, 11 BB, and 19 K.

The other notable bat to watch this weekend for Clemson is CF Will Taylor.

Taylor comes into the weekend with a .348/..478/.536 and 2 HR, 17 RBI, 16 BB, and 18 K.

Clemson's big advantage this weekend against GT is pitching. Their starters for the weekend have a combined ERA of 4.56, while GT's trio is 7.64...

The Tigers' bullpen has 10 members of the staff with an ERA below 4. GT's has 2.

First pitch is minutes away.

OT: Atlanta neighborhoods

Looking to get some guidance from you long time ATL folk. Son is looking to move out of his current apartment. It’s on Spring st, so that’s the lone positive, it’s close to campus. Other than that, there isn’t too many good things to say about it.

He and a couple guys are looking to move in together and Zach has found a place in Howell Station. It’s a nice 4BR house, looks to have been well taken care of and renovated. So we feel good about that. Coming back from seeing customers yesterday I drove by to get eyes on it. I noticed the Fulton County jail backs up to the street the house is on, there is also a ton of construction a block east of it (west Marietta St), but that shouldn’t be an issue. When I left I pulled up the GPS to take me home from there. It took me through Grove Park (Donald Lee Hallowell Pkwy to Hamilton E Holmes).

Can anyone with knowledge of that area provide any insight?

‘Preciate it.

Rivals Camp: Miami Updates 3/26

Greetings from St Thomas Aquinas and the second Rivals Camp of the year.

Morning session is OL/DL

He was up at GT two weeks ago. Has a really close relationship with Weinke and likes Geep. GT is probably about 3-4 on his list of schools right now based on my conversation with him. He did very well at guard and center today.

Very high on GT and Marco Coleman. He nearly committed to Michigan State because of Marco. GT and Indiana are the two main players for him right now.

Another Marco Coleman fan. Long shot for GT here. He won the DL MVP. He was supposed to visit GT with the new OL commit three weeks ago but a family deal caused him to stay home. He is very close to the OL and he really like Marco.

Recently committed to Duke and was amused that GT jumped in as the Blue Devils staff figured schools would after he popped. He is considering an OV but he needs to cool off his commitment before GT moves further along.

Former Jacket Chaunté Lowe Appointed to President’s Council

Four-time Olympian appointed to President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Joe Biden announced today his intent to appoint 27 individuals, including Georgia Tech track and field alumnae and four-time Olympian Chaunté Lowe, to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition.

The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition is a federal advisory committee that aims to promote healthy, accessible eating and physical activity for all Americans, regardless of background or ability.

One of Georgia Tech’s most decorated student-athletes, Lowe earned 13 all-ACC honors, six All-America accolades, three NCAA Championships and was inducted into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. Lowe graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in economics in 2008 and went on to become a four-time Olympian, 2008 Olympic high jump bronze medalist, American record holder, three-time World Champion, eight-time national outdoor champion and 12-time US National Champion.

Can you remind us when the NCAA calendar for the portal ins and outs and recruiting will settle down to the point of knowing who will be on our basketball team next fall?

KQ- The window closes May 11th for men's basketball. So that is the timespan where Damon Stoudamire and who ever he hires has to figure things out.

What is the time line on hiring new basketball assistants and knowing who all is staying and who is coming, player wise? I think we have a good core, but definitely need two big guys. I assume most of that will be settled after the national championship game?

KQ- The Final Four weekend is like the coaches convention weekend in CFB and that is when most business is done. I expect he will have his staff in place shortly after that. Basically everyone in college basketball will go to Houston so you can get a lot done there. That is when we are likely to start really hearing a lot of names. The other piece is you need the open jobs to settle up like Notre Dame or Georgetown because that impacts who is available to hire, who stays at other jobs and there is a trickle down from that depending on who gets hired where and who leaves.

Buzz used to be a staple in commercials with mascots. Not anymore. Why is Buzz blackballed?

KQ- I'm not sure, the Nissan commercial I think is has a bunch of mascots that are not in the NCAA Tournament so that is amusing.

How different are the spring practices between our former coach and Coach Key?

KQ- Well there is no music or shouting out where people should go, the kids know where to go between drills. No more Canada/Cuba end zones or Waffle House/Coke sidelines. It is a very traditional practice like CPJ ran or Mark Richt at UGA that I covered. They changed some of the drills and obviously, new coaches have an impact on that. It is a lot quieter and more focused in general.

I know it’s early, but do you think Jordan Williams sticks at guard or will they try him at tackle again?

KQ- He is focused on playing guard. I do not expect him to move back out to tackle other than if he is spelling someone in case of an injury. His path to the NFL is playing guard and GT needs him to be good at guard.

The GT jersey they presented to CDS at his press conference was #22. Why that #. I believe he wore 3 and 20 in the NBA.

KQ- He wore 20 at Arizona as well, not sure. Maybe he was a big John Salley fan? I'll ask about that the next time I see Batt or Damon.

Will Key’s recruiting emphasis be more on high school recruits than portal transfers?

KQ- It will always be a mix in this day and age because you lose kids to the portal so you can't just backfill only with HS kids. The numbers on the roster at each position (experience wise) will dictate some of the split between HS and portal. It will vary year to year IMO.

Adequacy of recruiting support staff was always a deservedly painful topic to Paul Johnson. How well have we progressed on adequate staff? Stripping away all the grandiose titles Collins gave staffers, is recruiting infrastructure fleshed out better now than under Scooter or not?

KQ- They have a solid size staff and have for a while. They do not have the sheer numbers that Clemson has for example, but they have enough bodies to get things done. They are also maxed out on space for staff as well so that will become an issue eventually.

How does the payout situation work for the NCAA Tournament? Like should we be pulling for the ACC teams to keep winning to up the payout? Would it be terrible for GT recruiting wise? Or does it not matter much for GT whether teams win/lose?

KQ- The school payments are split among the schools evenly so you should root for the ACC. Each unit is worth like $300-400k for each team game played.

Why did our recruiting drop off a cliff after Paul Hewitt? Funny business?

KQ-

Are there one or two primary focal points we should be paying attention to throughout the Spring that will likely indicate whether we are in for a relatively successful and exciting season or just another dud?

KQ- I think staying healthy is a big one and the other is the play of the offensive line as well. I think the defense should be pretty solid and I am not as concerned about that. Obviously, the QB thing is big, but I expect that will be unresolved until Fall Camp as they want competition there.

Eatonton, Ga. Ross Steelman fired an 8-under-par Tuesday, Christo Lamprecht added a 5-under-par 67, and No. 11 Georgia Tech played a stellar closing round and earned a second-place finish at the Linger Longer Invitational.

Tech, which began the day in fourth place, closed with a 7-under-par round of 281 Tuesday, a score bettered only by 20th-ranked Alabama, which pulled away from the field on the back nine, posted an 8-under-par 281 and won the tournament by eight strokes. The Yellow Jackets did, however, overtake Georgia and Vanderbilt, finishing six strokes clear of the top-ranked Commodores to finish as a runner-up for the fourth time in 2022-23.

The Yellow Jackets return to action March 30-April 1 at The Goodwin in Stanford, Calif.

TECH LINEUP – Lamprecht, who won the Inverness Intercollegiate in the fall, earned his second runner-up finish this spring and a top-10 showing in his fourth straight tournament. The junior from George, South Africa, made only one bogey and birdied six on Tuesday for his 67, and posted a 54-hole total of 208 (-8), two shots off the lead.

Steelman recovered from an opening round of 80 to shoot 72 Monday and a bogey-free 64 Tuesday, earning the senior from Columbia, Mo., a tie for 10th place at even-par 216, his third top-10 in five tournaments in 2022-23. Connor Howe, who shared the first-round lead with a 68, was 7-over-par through eight holes Tuesday, but made a dramatic turnaround, playing his final 11 holes 7-under-par with no bogeys to post a 72. The senior from Ogden, Utah, also tied for 10th place at even par, his best finish since a tie for third at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in September.

Freshman Hiroshi Tai (Singapore) provided the Yellow Jackets’ fourth counting score Tuesday with a 78, while senior Bartley Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) shot 79 and finished in a tie for 24th place.

Sophomore Benjamin Reuter (Naarden, The Netherlands) and freshman Aidan Tran (Fresno, Calif.), competing as individuals, shot 69 and 72, respectively, on Tuesday. Reuter also tied for 10th place individually at even par, while Tran tied for 49th.

TEAM LEADERBOARD – Alabama and Georgia, each with five victories in the previous 16 years of the Linger Longer Invitational, occupied the top two spots on the leaderboard, separated by one shot when the final round began and remained close through the front nine. But the Crimson Tide pulled away from the field on the back nine and finished the tournament at 14-under-par 850, eight strokes ahead of the Yellow Jackets (858, -6).

No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt struggled to a 4-over-par closing round of 292 and finished the tournament in third place at even-par 864, while Clemson matched Tech’s final round of 281 and took fourth place at 867 (+3). The Bulldogs shot 9-over-par 297 Tuesday and fell all the way to fifth place at 868 (+4), tied with Chattanooga.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD – Nick Dunlap gave Alabama both the team and individual titles, holding on to his 36-hole lead with a final-round 70 and a 54-hole total of 206 (-10), two shots clear of the Yellow Jackets’ Lamprecht and Vanderbilt’s William Moll (208, -8).

Chattanooga’s Garrett Eagle and Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, the nation’s No. 1-ranked player, tied for fourth place at 211 (-5). Alabama’s J.P. Cave and Georgia’s Connor Creasy tied for sixth place at 213 (-3), while the Crimson Tide’s Thomas Ponder and Clemson’s Kian Rose finished in a tie for eighth at 215 (-1).

Steelman, Howe and Reuter were joined in a tie for 10th place at even-par 216 by Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira of Arkansas.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION – The Yellow Jackets have competed three times in the Linger Longer Invitational, finishing fourth in 2013 and second in 2021 prior to this week’s event. Georgia and Alabama have each won five times in the 16-year history of the event. The tournament is contested at Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee, which measures 7,436 yards and plays to a par of 72.

The format is 54 holes, 18 each day from both the first and 10th tees, with the low four individual scores of five each day counting toward the team total.

The 16-team field for 2023 included Alabama (20), Arkansas (44), Augusta, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Clemson, Georgia (34), Georgia Tech (11), UNC Greensboro (37), Kennesaw State, Mercer, South Alabama, South Florida, Vanderbilt (1), Virginia (16) and Wofford.
