Practice Notes and Quotes 8/1

ATLANTA- Georgia Tech football kicked off the drive toward the 2023 season opener with a two-plus hour practice on Tuesday afternoon. First-year head coach Brent Key also celebrated his 45th birthday with his wife and daughter after practice and the team sang "Happy Birthday" to him to wrap up the first day of action.

"Now it's good to be back out here and really kind of start to put together all the work we've been doing in the summer and really what the first day does is it gives you a baseline of where you are at in relation to the last practice of spring," Key said. "So we have a chance to come out here and really get this evaluated, be critical. It's like I told the team I said, 'you know, really our number one goal for this camp is to establish our identity and establish who we are as a football team.' That's we've got to come out of this camp with is a true identity. What we hang our hat on not play wise, not scheme wise, really just our mentality as a football team."

Key spoke with the media after practice and gave some injury updates and his thoughts on day one of camp. He credits both the hard work of his players and the new strength staff led by A.J. Artis for how healthy his team was to open camp.

Of note, Key gave several injury updates. The team enters camp relatively healthy with wide receiver James BlackStrain back in action after missing much of spring ball. Two other receivers, Leo Blackburn and JuJu Lewis are out for all of camp. Freshman defensive tackle Bryston Dixon is also out for fall camp.

"It speaks to A.J. and his staff and what they've done but also credit to the players and the way they've come out in the summer and attacked it because you could kind of slop through and go half in the summer and you're not gonna have that baseline of health that you need. So we've got a couple of guys that are out are gonna be out as well, Leo, Juju, and Bryston Dixon, It was good to see James BlackStrain back out there today and starting to move around a little bit, but he is still no contact, but getting back moving in the group. It's good to see him out there. We're relatively healthy and hopefully, stay that way going forward."

The Tech staff had plenty of new receivers in camp to help fill the injury void at that position with a pair of SEC transfers Chase Lane (Texas A&M) and Dominick Blaylock (UGA) both making their Tech practice debut on Tuesday as well as speedy freshman Eric Singleton who drew praise from Key and his players for his work in summer workouts and the highly rated Zion Taylor.

"We've got some older guys who haven't played a lot and then we have an influx of new guys both transfers and young guys. That's a position of durability. When you are practicing in the summer and running the way you do, the high school kids run track and do all those things, that doesn't prepare you for the amount of reps and the wear and tear on your body. They will learn pretty quickly how to take care of themselves and be ready for the next day. We've got some guys who can run and some speed. I want to see when we get the pads on, who can break someone down one-on-one and turn a short play into a big play," Key said of the receiving room."

---------------------------------------------------------------

Key opened up the entire practice for the media for background only. They are in hats and shorts so there isn't much worth reporting. The players are knocking off some rust and so I agree that it is sort of pointless to say player X did this or player Y did that at this juncture. I'll have more in-depth stuff to share as they scrimmage and ramp up from sources.

Key noted part of the thought process with moving practice from the morning for just fall camp to the afternoon isn't just toughness but also the schedule. In week two they will have an afternoon kickoff against South Carolina State at 1 pm.

Key said the first day is about being organized and getting guys lined up where they want them to. They ran two huddles most of the day with split groups and he said that is in part due to a change the ACC made allowing them to have 120 players in camp instead of 110 so they added 19 walk-ons this offseason including some very talented recruited ones that had offers from FBS programs. He said one of his first goals was to ramp up the walk-on program and that is something that Tim McFarlin has spearheaded since joining the staff.

Key joked that he didn't watch the QBs today, but he said they have 3 guys all with experience starting games at the college level and he has no plan to name a starter or make a public decision on the QB thing until kickoff of the Louisville game most likely.

Key said he thinks the defense will be determined by the LB play, he said it is hard to tell anything with those guys until the pads are on.

Key said he is excited about Eddie Kelly the DL transfer from USF caught his eye today with how he moved and in the backend Ahmari Harvey and Omar Daniels both flashed to him out of the guys who didn't play last year. Key also shouted out Horace Lockett and Zeek Biggers and how they look now compared to a year ago.

Key said he could care less where GT was picked in the ACC Preseason Media Poll. He said if he wasn't a football coach he would care about that stuff, but it does not matter at all to him or the team.

I asked Key about OL depth and he said they feel like they finally have 8 guys they can rotate and play with. He said that a lot of guys have really stepped up and he used Corey Robinson as an example and how he changed his body completely from last year to now.

Despite it being pretty hot, Key noted it was actually cooler today than other days and the were able to engage the AC system in the indoor that apparently hadn't been used in some time. He wants his guys to face some adversity from the heat while trying to be safe at the same time. He said the hydration and nutrition staff are doing a great job of helping with that.

I was able to take a trip to liberty university this past week and was able to see their athletic facilities how in the world did a school like them raise money to build all of that.

KQ- Televanglism basically. They have a ton of money that they have to spend so they are pouring the money into athletics viewing it as a way to more legitimize the school. The backbone of it was televangelists but they are trying to move away from that and the scandals there, but they are spending stupid money on athletics. They rebuilt those facilities by the way recently. They were not old or outdated and they just tore them down and built new ones anyway. It's crazy stuff.

It’s been mentioned a few times recently that we have been “too late” to a prospect. How early should we be getting in with these guys?

KQ- It really depends on the player and how they recruit him and whether or not they are local. Some kids take offense to other out of state schools jumping in and then GT coming in later. Same thing even happens with Bama or UGA with kids they recruit. It is the mindset of disrespect that is a big deal in the culture. It is sort of dumb if you ask me, but whatever.

Does the 25 scholarship limit rule per year still apply? Can we get more than one more player with 24 commits thus far? Are there exceptions with new head coaches, early enrollees and transfers?

This is getting like Chinese checkers.

KQ- The 25 cap was for HS players but there were carve-outs to replace transfers out of the program. With the transfer portal now that really isn't an issue. Some leagues also put caps on it because schools like Mississippi State would sign 34 players and park 15 at a JUCO for two years so that was part of why some of those counters were put into place. I'm not sure if they are gone or not, but it is not important or anything we hear about these days.

In the last JOL TV you pointed out a hard-ringing dynamic at play, "Nobody wants the sport to be fair." College football has been the wild west since way before NIL, and it's always been super deferential to blue bloods.

What will it take to get all these actors to put in a real parity measure that actually begins to level the playing field? Is there a Kelly/Russell-as-czar somewhat realistic dream scenario?

KQ- The only way that could possibly happen IMO is if you make all the SAs on the FBS level employees and there is a collective bargaining agreement and a salary cap. The players could force the hand of the schools, but they will not willingly go along with it. I have a hard time imagining this scenario actually working that way. I think it will end up more like Major League Baseball and you will have the Yankees/Mets/Red Sox payroll teams i.e. UGA, USC, Bama, Ohio State and you will have mid-market programs like GT, Miss State, Illinois that are the Twins, Nationals, Tigers and you will have the schools that focus their money on other revenue sports and are like the cheapest MLB teams like Vandy, Syracuse, Duke, Indiana and they will be like the As, Rays and Pirates.

How do I get signed up first for Georgia Tech lunch at whiskeys?

KQ- When I can get a date set up, we will post a sign up thing.

Who, of our current commits, do you think may be lined up to get a star bump by the end of the season? Any that you think may drop a star?

KQ- Tackling the last part first, Troy Stevenson would be the one most likely to drop. He is sort of a fringe measurables guy at a 4-star and the one RJ and I both think is the most likely to drop a little. Going up, Tah'j Butler (I think he is way underrated and have him on the agenda for RIvals to watch this fall), Aaron Philo, Trey Horne, Landen Marshall and Jameson Riggs are the ones to watch for that 4th star. I think RJ is big on Isiah Canion as well.

Where are you taking Gibbs in fantasy?

KQ- That is a tough one because his usage will really vary based on how the Lions are. I think I'd be in a wait-and-see mode with him and take him as your second RB later on or third RB depending on your draft.

Miami ruled college football throughout the 1980s until right around 2004 when the wheels fell off the wagon. That was the time the Hurricanes joined the ACC and they've one just one division title and zero conference championships since joining the ACC. Arkansas won back-to-back Southwestern Conference titles in 1988 and 1989 behind head coach Ken Hatfield who bolted just ahead of the Hogs move to the SEC in 1992 for Clemson. Arkansas has three division titles in 30+ years now in the SEC with the last one coming in 2006. They won 10 SWC titles in the previous 30 years. The Hogs former SWC conference members Texas A&M also ruled that conference under Jackie Sherrill and RC Slocum in the mid to late 1980s through the 1990s and into their move into the Big XII. A&M jumped to the SEC in 2012 and in 11 years they've managed three second places ties in the SEC West and one 10-plus win season in the first year in the league under Kevin Sumlin in 2012. Nebraska ruled the Big 8 which became the Big XII and won shares of five national titles and had two other runner-up finishes from 1970 to 2001. They won Big 8 or Big XII titles 22 times from 1963 to 1999 and had 7 other division titles as well. They moved to the Big 10 in 2011 and they won a division championship in year two in 2012 and then fell off a cliff after firing Bo Pelini. I think they are 38-57 since Pelini was fired for just winning 9 games a year in the Big 10.

The harder the road, the harder the chance at winning a championship becomes and the more irrelevant your program becomes nationally. Nebraska was one of the biggest brands in CFB 20 years ago as was Miami while Arkansas was one of the toughest programs in their conference and Texas A&M was actually competitive nationally and not just a winner on signing days thanks to NIL.

The point of all of this is, sometimes you are better off staying put and being the bigger fish in the smaller pond. Colorado this week limped back to the Big XII after leaving for the Pac 12 in 2011 in a move that basically killed off their football program for a decade by eliminating their natural recruiting bases. The Buffs won 7 Big 8 or Big XII championships between 1988 and 2005 and they had one winning season since leaving for the Pac 12 in 2016.

Clemson fans and leadership have a bit of understanding of this from what I've gathered and I think even places like UNC or others understand this, but other schools like FSU and Miami don't and the lessons learned the hard way by these schools should be something to consider when they are pondering a move up. FSU has a winning record against current Big Ten teams, but most of that came during their best years in bowl games. That isn't an indication that they will suddenly return to mid-90s form.

My preference would be for Georgia Tech to remain in the ACC as long as it is viable because I think that is what is in the best interest of the program being successful and sustainable. The expanded playoff will provide room for things and if suddenly things move into SAs as employees or some other weird spinoff from NIL you reevaluate your options, but I think this bumrush to become members of a super conference is stupid and it is killing the sport we all love. FSU not being able to maintain their elite status is part of the perception issue with the ACC, not as much as Miami, but still seeing Noles fans puff their chest after one good season again in a very weak ACC last year is not going to equate to sudden dominance when you play Ohio State or Michigan in the Big 10 or Alabama or Georgia in the SEC.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Recruit Reaction: Targets react to Saturday on The Flats

Good afternoon.

The coaches at Georgia Tech were running all across the campus on Saturday as they hosted what may have been the biggest collection of talent on campus in the Brent Key era.

Key and his assistants were able to spend quality time with a ton of underclassmen, while also being able to have the commits love up on them and recruit them as well.

This thread will be locked for ease of access, and will continue to be updated in the coming days.

HOOPS Assistant coach search update 5/2

So after doing more digging, I have heard that Terry Parker from UAB is joining the Georgia Tech staff and I've had a recruit confirm with us that Parker was his lead recruiter for GT.

Parker has been on the UAB staff with Andy Kennedy since he arrived in Birmingham. He started his career at LaTech after playing there as a GA. Prior to UAB he was an assistant at Indiana State, Utah Valley and Nichols State so he has extensive experience recruiting the Boot and the areas around there.

I've also heard that Amir Abdur-Rahim has tried to hire back Pershin Williams but so far nothing has happened so far. Apparently, Abdur-Rahim is not pleased with the recruiting prowess of his current staff in Tampa. Just something to monitor, but I doubt anything happens there because it is easy math ACC>AAC and he is a Georgia guy.
