Georgia Tech 2023-24 Schedule | Purchase season tickets

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s basketball and Cincinnati, a new member of the Big 12 Conference, have agreed to a two-game series that will be played this season and next. The Yellow Jackets will travel to play Cincinnati Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Fifth Third Bank Arena, and will host the Bearcats at McCamish Pavilion during the 2024-25 season on a date to be determined.

The teams have met 11 times previously, most recently in the 1996 NCAA Southeast Regional semifinal at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., a game won by the Bearcats, 87-70. The teams first met in 1926, then eight times when both institutions were members of the Metro Conference, and again in the 1994 Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Cincinnati holds an 8-3 lead in the all-time series.

The Bearcats, 23-13 last season and 11-7 in the American Athletic Conference, reached the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. They join a strong non-conference lineup for Georgia Tech, which also includes the ACC/SEC Challenge against Mississippi State at home (Nov. 28), Penn State in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event at State Farm Arena (Dec. 17), the annual Tech-Georgia game in Athens (date to be announced) and the Diamond Head Classic (Dec. 21-24) in which the Jackets will face Massachusetts in the opening round.

***COMMIT*** Two more transfer pitchers added to 2023-24 roster

Brett Thomas, a former top 100 recruit coming out of Riverwood HS, has announced his decision to join Georgia Tech baseball.

In 2023, Thomas finished with a 5.14 ERA, with 11 K and 9 BB in 7 IP.
In 2022, Thomas finished with a 6.65 ERA, with 25 K and 16 BB in 23 IP.

This next season for Thomas will be his COVID year.

Reed Schaefer has also announced his decision to transfer to GT baseball. He was a top 500 recruit nationally coming out of HS in 2021, and has two years of eligibility remaining from what I have gathered.

This one I missed earlier, so there could have already been discussion on it somewhere here.

He pitched one season at Arizona, prior to spending last season at the College of Southern Nevada, where he threw 18.1 IP, striking out 26, walking 16, and finishing with a 5.89 ERA.

Now that Thomas has gone public, I can FINALLY finish up my baseball notebook and get that up early next week.

FOOTBALL Scrimmage One Notes and Quotes 8/12

Brent Key had a special guest today, George O'Leary for the scrimmage and it was extremely hot out there. Key was as sweaty as I've seen him coming off the field. The scrimmage was closed but I'll share what I can as I'm able to assemble some details

Here is what Key had to say in quick quotes format as I have an event to go to with my wife tonight.

Good chance to get out there today in the heat.

149 plays, 61 with the ones, 50 with the twos and the rest with the threes.

D’Quan Douse showed up and Noah Collins made some plays today.

They rehearsed game day stuff on all sides of the ball and they are working on that. Key has a full page of notes on things he wants fixed, huddles, play calls and other things he wants tightened.

They had some big plays called back by some penalties overall penalties weren’t too bad in number, but the ones they got were costly. They played some freshmen and they had back-to-back penalties in one sequence both by freshmen.

Want to start looking at the depth chart now after this scrimmage, looking at the back end of the D and the LB positions and figure out who those guys are.

Jamie Felix is sitting at the 2/3/4 spot and he made some plays today caught Key’s eye. He said the RB production needs to improve and Felix got what the play was designed to get and he stuck with the design and Jamal Haynes made a couple of plays as well at RB.

In the first half of the scrimmage, the RBs struggled and he talked with Norval McKenzie at the break and McKenzie motivated them and they played much harder.

Dylan Leonard had a couple of nice catches.

The young guys looked like young guys today, that’s why you scrimmage and make it just like the game.

Key said Etinosa Reuben had some nice plays, but they are looking for consistency. The ability to effect the QB and as a collective they did well. He thought the OL pass pro was not good today and the pocket was close. Eddie Kelly is doing a good job there rushing the passer and did that today.

All three QBs got reps with the top three groups. Everyone played including the walk-ons today, it was family day and they are having a BBQ afterward. They will aim to establish some spots and two-deep and they may not know who the one or the two is. Today was about seeing who handles adversity in two-minute drills or 2nd and 16, after you got a penalty on a big play and can they shake that off. Going to the sideline and rallying the players. They are looking for mental toughness to forget the bad play. Don’t have a bad day, it’s okay to have a bad play. O’Learyism

Key said the OL got a chance to block multiple fronts and they rotated young guys in, they have 6-7 guys who have started games and played together so that is a bonus and they aren’t seeing things for the first time, they are trying to add in new guys there now.

Camp is a grind and nothing comes easy, he is trying to build a team and today is a day they have to push through and it has been a grind and it is no different than day one. Seeing your individual improvement each day is your reward for that grind. They had 10-11 guys with heat cramps on day one and today just a couple and they all came back in. It is a credit to the S&C and staff for getting the guys ready.

Key said that Trenilyas Tatum has done a nice job and come a long way the last 5-6 months and he is communicating better and making the call to the DL fast. The other guys they are sorting through. The check down or busting a gap on a different type of run, they have to build some cohesiveness at LB, Tren is going to be out there who else is. Kevin Sherrer wants the best eval for who all will be out there.

Key said that other than the line coaches the other ones have been on the box or on the field. They were trying some stuff today. Some guys like to call it from the field and who is the spotter and who is watching the clock and all that.

On kicking, some versus scouts and some vs air, the next two weeks they will hone in on the finer details of that. Who the guys are on those teams and they will play the best on special teams, who are the best to contribute.

Additional notes:

All three QBs ended up throwing INTs including King throwing a pick six and the first half of the scrimmage was rough on the offense and dragging. They picked things up later in the scrimmage. They did continue rotating the QBs with different groups throughout the scrimmage.

The LB position is basically Trenilyas Tatum as Key said and then they are trying to find who is the other LB with him. Andre White, Braelen Oliver or Paul Moala.

The defense seemed to have the upper hand for a lot of the scrimmage and there were some penalties on the edge when backs kept trying to bound plays to the edge hence the comments from Key above.

They are still trying to figure out the RB rotation. Dontae Smith, Jamie Felix and Jamal Haynes are the three guys who are sort of the top end of things. It sounds from sources like Evan Dickens hit a little bit of a freshman wall in camp and needs to fight through it.

QB thing is not settled and probably won't be for some time. That isn't coach speak.

Kicking has been an actual real competition, they are going to amp that up next week more.

Tech Volleyball Opens at No. 20 in Preseason AVCA Top 25

The Jackets make 55th consecutive appearance in the top 25 dating back to 2020

AVCA Rankings | Schedule| Tickets

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Georgia Tech volleyball has been ranked No. 20 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Women’s Poll, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The Jackets have now been named in a preseason poll in three consecutive seasons after ending a 15-year drought two years ago. Reappearing in the top 25 for the first time since 2005 at No. 12 on Sept. 30, 2020, Tech has since been listed in 55 straight top 25 polls to date. The Yellow Jackets reached as high as No. 6 during that stretch for two consecutive weeks from Nov. 18-25 in the fall of 2020, the highest ranking for the White and Gold since 2003 and the third-best mark all time.

Tech comes in as one of three ACC teams inside the top 25. The Jackets are slated to face five opponents ranked in the preseason top 25 this season in No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 Pitt, No. 8 Penn State, No. 13 San Diego and No. 14 Ohio State. Each of the aforementioned teams reached the NCAA Tournament in 2022, highlighted by national title contenders Louisville and Final Four opponents in Pitt and San Diego. Familiar future opponents in Ohio State (Elite Eight) and Penn State (Sweet 16) also made deep runs in the postseason.

Headlining the White and Gold’s 13 returners from the 2022 campaign are a pair of preseason all-ACC selections in outside hitterBianca Bertolino and setter Bella D’Amico. The incumbents will be joined by eight highly touted new Yellow Jackets, including three transfers and four freshmen, three of which are international.

Georgia Tech will next host an exhibition match against Auburn (Aug. 19) on The Flats. Following three straight road trips to open the regular season, the Jackets will make their official home debut hosting the Georgia Tech Classic. They’ll begin home competition with Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate against Georgia in McCamish Pavilion, presented by Delta (Sept. 15), then take on Howard (Sept. 16) and San Diego (Sept. 17) in O’Keefe Gymnasium.

FOOTBALL Georgia Tech Football Practice Notes and Quotes 8/15 OL Day

ATLANTA- Bad weather rolled while Georgia Tech football went through practice on Tuesday. Head coach Brent Key opted to move his team indoors for the majority of practice. Afterward, offensive line coach Geep Wade and a trio of his linemen spoke to the media about fall camp.

Finding depth on the offensive line has been a major topic of fall camp. The center position is an area where the Jackets lack game experience behind presumptive starter Weston Franklin. Wade said they are trying out several players including true freshman Gabe Fortson and redshirt freshman Brandon Best. Both are competing for the number two center spot along with a surprise name.

"Weston has kind of been the main show for the last year playing as a young kid and he has really progressed. He is a kid who has really worked himself into what he has become through our weight program and through our offseason program," Wade said. "Behind him last spring, Brandon Best, we gave him a shot there and we told him some things he had to do over the summer to continue to progress to where we thought he needed to be at this level to win and he did it. Gabe Fortson has come in and for a freshman, I'm really proud of where he is at. He missed practice today with an illness, but he has really progressed. Then we are working Joe Fusile a little bit so we have a bunch of different combinations and as a staff, we have to get it honed in the next four or five days before next week starts."

Lots of praise for OT Ethan MacKenny and center Gabe Fortson from the players and Wade. Benjamin Galloway got a shoutout at guard for the freshmen as well.

MORE FROM GEEP

We are looking for 8-10 guys, at this level if you have eight you feel good. The center position is the one we are working really hard at and there are a bunch of different combinations we are working and we have to find some continuity there. That is something we are working on next week to build.

They are a tight-knit group and we recruit guys who want to hang out together and enjoy college. I tell our kids if they are happy where they are at they will play better. I want positive energy in my room and I am a positive guy. If you are not in this profession it will beat you down. As an OL there will be ebbs and flows in this and we want to be on the good end of that. You have your teammates around you and you guys have to fix it

Connor Scaglione is a grown man and is a big guy, he didn’t go through spring ball at Princeton and he has a bum knee, shoulder and wrist and is going through Coach Key’s practices and trying to fight through it. He has been an added bonus.

All these camp reps are invaluable we set the mentality. In the season you are scout teaming.

At OT, he said the guys have done amazing things with their bodies and hips, Corey Robinson and Jakiah Leftwich have worked as hard as anyone on the team and they’ve put themselves into a position to be potential starters and they are both very tough kids.

Ethan MacKenny is running with the twos with every rep. Ben Galloway is very twitchy at guard. Gabe went out there with the twos and ran 50-60 plays with the twos at center. Pat Screws has been limited a little and Elias Cloy has been playing tackle and we will move him around.

With the zone scheme guys can move around so there is less of an emphasis on this guy is a tackle and this guy is a guard.

WESTON FRANKLIN QUICK QUOTES

It is a different staff than with Key coaching us, different terms and it has been a smooth transition and so there are some different terms and words for the same stuff Key had us doing.

It helps having the guys they’ve played games with and they are seeing things with the same set of eyes and we can all play as one unit.

Camp has been difficult and trying to recoup your body after losing body weight while making progress forward with meetings

Weston said that Gabe is learning the offense fast and he is still working on some things and he is trying to help him, he tries to tell him everything he knows. He has to have confidence in that position and it is hard as a true freshman with guys looking at you, but you have to step up.

Weston they have been going out to eat and spending time together as an OL getting to know each other.

Gabe could back me up or Joe. Connor has done a good job joining us and Ethan MacKenny has stepped up as a freshman and is a very physical player. Tyler Gibson is doing a good job, he has to work on a few things, but he makes the right steps.

Weston said each QB has their own style and they have to know each one they are working with, they worked on getting to know each other off the field, it is just about knowing which one I’m playing with at the time.

Weston said the DL all those guys have played together and they feed off each other and talk every play and you have to block them out and focus on your play. They’ve gelled and play really well together.

COREY ROBINSON QUICK QUOTES

Coming out of spring ball, I was 280 before summer training and I came back at 302 and worked with AJ Artis and stayed with the nutrition to get ready for that grind in camp. In May I did a lot of stuff on my own, my mom was feeding me like crazy and AJ set up a good plan and we get after it. Erin our nutritionist worked on making that weight a little better.

I would say we have more confidence and we’ve all played snaps in big games and we were real young last year and now we play with a different edge with the chemistry we have under our belt.

Towards the end of the year we went through a lot as a team and we got to the end of the season and we wanted to play for each other and together and I think that helped us a lot.

I love Joe, our chemistry is unmatched and I love playing next to him, when I’m low he brings me up and I try to do the same for him. I’m happy to have him next to me.

Ethan works hard and he is a dog, he is very athletic and he will develop into a really good player very soon.

JOE FUSILE QUICK QUOTES

Weston is a great center and I’m learning from him as I take some snaps.

Coach Wade is high energy and he is an attack the line. Him and Coach Key compliment each other.

I cut out milk and I lost like 6% body fat from that. We get after it in the weight room too.

Corey is great and I really appreciate that and playing with Weston is great too, we have great chemistry now.

I’m really pleased with them and Gabe has been really good at picking up the offense. Gabe is as strong as of a freshman as I’ve seen. Ethan MacKenny is really good.

I think we will be very prepared for Louisville.

Having an OL HC has been a great thing and I do enjoy his approach very much.

FOOTBALL Q's Take sponsored by Inteleca: Time to earn starting spots

Thanks to our new sponsor Inteleca for helping bring back Q's Take my weekly look at things around GT and college sports from my vantage.

GA Tech 2 660x165.jpg

It has been a slog for the Georgia Tech football team during a tough fall camp under head coach Brent Key and that was summed up with a physical but sloppy scrimmage on Saturday per our sources. This is where Key wants his players to push through and that was evident with Key's media session on Saturday.

Much of the hype has been on the quarterback race between redshirt freshman Zach Pyron and redshirt sophomore TAMU transfer Haynes King. I'll mention Zach Gibson as the third guy here as well, as he could end up playing a role this fall if injuries or inconsistency creep in which has been a constant the post-Johnson for GT football.

It is a competition, no one has been anointed anything. King has 422 career snaps at quarterback over three years and has 187 snaps in just one year of work. Buster Faulkner and Chris Weinke brought in King who they had both recruited at prior stops to compete for the job and he is doing that and Pyron is trying to prove he is ready for the challenge of being a daily ACC starter. Neither of these guys are Drake Maye right now. There is a lot of pressure on them and the staff though to put them in a position to compete and run the offense.

I think folks need to have realistic expectations for this upcoming season with regard to the QBs. The way they play will be most influenced IMO by how the OL blocks and how good the skill guys are at doing their jobs on offense.

They have talent in each of the rooms with maybe receiver being the biggest question on the outside given all the changes there and the loss of Leo Blackburn. They should be able to find a solid trio of running backs out of that group and the TEs have actually been the most consistent group per my sources in camp thus far. The OL actually has some depth and some guys pushing for playing time from backup roles at multiple spots, which is also an encouraging sign.

Defensively the DL should be able to really disrupt things, but they still need to find a complimentary LB to play alongside Trenilyas Tatum from that trio of veteran transfers Paul Moala, Braelen Oliver and Dre White. They need some separation there and Key said as much during his presser yesterday. The LB play will determine if the defense is good, average of not so good IMO this fall.

I expect the secondary will be fine as they have enough options at CB and the safety/nickel spot should be a strength again.

It is hard to tell where you stand in the grind of camp playing against yourself live and that is going to be the toughest part for Key and his new staff as they get ready for Louisville in week one.

This coming week will be a big one for the Jackets and the progression that Key wants to see and for players to start to step up and take their roles and create separation at key spots.

FOOTBALL Georgia Tech Football Practice Notes and Quotes 8/14

ATLANTA- After a day off, Georgia Tech football return to action on Monday with a two-hour practice on a scorching Rose Bowl Practice Field. Defensive line coach Marco Coleman and a trio of his linemen spoke to the media after practice.

Coleman is back at Tech after a year away from the program at Michigan State and he is still working on teaching some techniques in camp so they are executed the way he wants them to be executed.

“It is still a work in progress even though I was gone for a year they learned some new techniques that were taught and the guys did a good job of doing those but now we are doing things a little bit differently so having those guys work and having the spring and getting it going and they are getting going now they are getting better and better and better and our goal is to get incrementally better every day,” Coleman said.

Coleman still competing at WDE, ones, twos and threes, none have solidified themselves, they will all play and it will be week-to-week to see who runs out there first.

Coleman ET and Eddie have been awesome and they are smart and hungry and they are exactly what we anticipated, they exemplify GT football.

Coleman said Zeek is in better shape and can sustain better and he is more aggressive and his attitude has improved as he has transformed his body and he will be a big part of their success.

Coleman on Horace Lockett, he is still a young player and fundamental need work, being big isn’t enough inside, good technique makes him a problem when he uses it. He is 330-pounds so he can make a difference.

Coleman on Key, Brent has had an opportunity to see what it takes to be a champion and he knows what it takes to do that here. He has gathered counsel from those who have done it. I have full confidence in him.

Coleman said Sylvain looks like an Adonis and he is still growing as a football player and the new style this season will help him, that will give him a chance to show he has NFL type talent, they don’t talk about the NFL with him, they just want him to be the best player he can be.

Coleman said they have enough depth to redshirt and develop guys Ezra Odinjor and Malcolm and Bryston are developing, Bryston is still out, but the others they can develop. Shymeik has a big body and can develop, he is adjusting to his body and he is heavier than when he got here. He might have to play so they have to get him ready just in case and they have to understand what college football is about.

Sylvain Yondjouen said the temps are way different and it has been very hard adjusting to be able to finish practice and keep the energy up. It made us work more and getting tired made guys lose focus and you can see that so you are prepared for games.

Yondjouen said they’ve been busy eating and getting stuff from the nutrition day, they always have food and shakes and whatever they need to keep their energy up before practice and hydration using the water bottle. They weigh them in after practice before lifts, so they make sure their weight stays stable and isn’t going up or down too much.

Yondjouen said this camp he is focused in and learning what his position does and other positions do as well. He is working on his craft and doing his job and doing it right.

Yondjouen said the competition at FE has helped a lot and it is a fight everyday especially with Eddie Kelly and ET in the room now. Having them in the room motivates them more too and they play hard and they came from different schools and they want to spark. It is amazing to have them on the team.

Yondjouen said the moments they are going through will help them fight through games, it will be a memory they can go back to from camp where they fought through stuff and it is time to finish what they started.

Yondjouen said that Jakiah Leftwich and Corey Robinson have both made big strides. Robinson has increased his size a lot and he has to think about his moves now going against those two guys instead of being able to beat them.

D’Quan Douse was up next, he said camp has been an adjustment after going in the mornings for the last few years. Staying mentally focused and having mental fortitude to move through. He could lose nine pounds over the course of the day. Fighting through that is huge for him.

Douse said the DL chemistry is a lot easier with making checks and calls, sometimes they can just make a look and get on the same page.

Douse was in a TV ad for Medicaid coverage for kids commercial, it was a NIL deal on the side, he is an advocate for kids without Medicaid who need insurance. He hopes he has some more commercials.

Douse said Zeek Biggers is going to have a bigger workload it is about him being mental tough and strong and he needs to be prepared for that.

Douse said that on the DL they have Pugh and Dixon, Bryston is still out, but he is powerful and has strong hands. He knows what to do and even help coach. Malcolm is a twitchy and fast DE.

Douse said that they leaned on the LBs last year and now the DL is the older group with a bigger role, they won’t be bailed out and they are prepared for that.

Douse said having Brian Baker and Marco Coleman coaching them, they are hand-in-hand and Baker is an older guy who coached coach Coleman here, Coleman is the position coach so he runs the show, but he trusts both of them.

Zeek Biggers, said it was a blessing he cut his weight with Coach AJ, lost 15 to 20 pounds down to 315 pounds and he can really move and get off the ball faster and react.

Biggers, thinks they have good depth and they have guys who can play a lot of snaps and they are going to make plays this year and make a change.

Biggers said that Lockett is coming along, he is getting older and getting coaching from coach Coleman and Baker and will make plays this year.

Biggers said the technique changes are a little different, they knew him when he was coaching ends, he wants them to push guys back and move them off the LOS and he wants them to be physical.

Biggers said they had him focus on his pass rush and his burst off the line and working with his hands and be explosive.

Biggers said the DTs have a lot of chemistry and they are friends on and off the field and that has been huge.

JOL Mailbag 8/14 Sponsored by Auto-Owners Insurance

1689695750422.png

You're probably tired of me asking questions like this but I'll shoot my shot...how are JOL sub numbers compared to August 2022?

KQ- We've grown about 5-6% from last year, but I also haven't done my big subscription push yet for the fall. That is coming this weekend. I need all of you to help with that.

I think at some time you mentioned you had engagements with both MSU and Alabama. How does JOL compare with those two sites? Which takes more of your time or mental anguish?

KQ- Most of my work time is spent here. Our MSU site has a really talented young writer who runs that site as a solo gig. My Bama site is in a rebuild situation similar to this site when I took it over in 2009. That site is staffed up so I am not writing or doing much other than some posts and oversight with my staff there. I'm trying to teach them how to do what I do and make their own careers similar to how I've done it, but in a way that the market will find interesting. That's been a challenge. It takes a while to find your legs in these types of things.

There certainly are a lot of business questions upfront today.

For the first time in a while, there seem to be upwardly promotable coaches on the football staff. I had asked you a few years back what Marco Coleman's end game was as a coach. Given his ability to recruit nationally, his contacts with the NFL and former players, and his coaching ability...what kind of future do you see for him in the coaching business?

KQ- I'm not really sure. I don't know Marco like that though he has been considerably more friendly on his return to GT to me. I think he had his guard up when he joined the staff in January of 2019. I've noticed that sometimes with guys who played in the NFL not named Tashard Choice and they can be a little harder to get to know. He has been great since he came back, but again I don't really know what his end game is. He did tell me he wanted to coach here because that is his passion (GT) and if not for that he would be in the NFL coaching. That's a big reason why he came back along with his relationship with Key. He has been open about that in our media stuff too.

At the spring game, the TE who caught my eye was Billy Ward. He looked bigger than the rest and actually made some nice catches, but he is almost never mentioned. The names we always hear are Leonard, Seither, and of course, JOL favorite, Luke Benson. Is my guy Billy going to surprise some folks this season?

KQ- I still don't hear much about Billy. I think he just hasn't really turned it on consistently or it hasn't clicked for some reason. He very much looks the part, but he is probably the 4th TE overall and could even be behind Jackson Long in the five hole. It just hasn't come together for him yet. He reminds me of Avery Boyd at WR who is another guy who looks the part but it just isn't happening yet.

Best guess… who starts at QB?

KQ- I've been very clear on here how I expect it to play out.

I know you have touched on this before but please hop in the Time Machine and remind us about the behind the scenes stuff with Nick Marshall before UGA and Auburn. Was he a silent here? How did we miss on him? Get out bagged?

KQ- So I was in Las Vegas where my oldest son was born via adoption with my first wife. I heard from a GT source that Nick had committed to GT. Nick did not have a phone and his momma's phone was turned off or something like that at the time. A HS coach of his would not respond to me or the coach recruiting him to GT and was basically the only way to get in touch with the kid unless you drove down to Wilcox County. I was in Vegas for part of May and a huge chunk of June and wasn't able to return home until after UGA had flipped him. So I never got the story out, but I had been able to confirm the commitment prior to the flip to UGA and run something. CPJ and Charles Kelly were very pissed about that played out.

With Todd out of the picture has there been any movement towards a plan yet to bring Paul back to honor the 15th anniversary of the ACC Champions, the 10-year anniversary of the Orange Bowl champions or both next year? Getting Wes and Brandon Gaudin back for that would be a lot of fun too.

KQ- PJ is scheduled to come back for the CFB HOF thing at some point this year to be honored on Hyundai Field ;) as I understand it. He has been back several times and has toured the facilities with Key and given his blessing to something Key had made to honor him and the other legendary coaches in the FB facility.

I would hope for Braves fans Brandon's dance card would be too full for him to do anything. Wes couldn't do it, there is no way even if he was calling the GT game that week logistically. It takes too long to go down to the field from the press box IMO to have him do something even if it was halftime.

This may be a dumb question but is there anyway the SEC would consider absorbing the ACC? Then they could divide up the teams how they see fit and get Clemson and FSU in the process. It would be a true super conference and they are gonna need some teams like most of the ACC has to offer, it would be decent matchups and help pad the records of some of their other programs. If they just keep adding nothing but big time programs eventually some of those teams will be considered second tier just due to the fact that there is just too many tier 1 teams in the same conference. Teams like Oklahoma, Florida, A&M, Miss St, and even Ole Miss after a decade of consistent sub .500 seasons they will not be considered good programs anymore. Adding the ACC could help those teams with weaker schedules

KQ- I've thought of this as a possible outcome. What will likely determine that happening or not will be how much more expansion the Big 1G tries. If they go to 24, then I think the SEC absorbing who they can would make sense to defend their turf and keep the Big 1G out of the Southeast. It will be interesting to see what UNC does because they are the one team that both conferences would love to have in that scenario.

Shot in the dark. Have you had any opportunities to talk to some of the transfers one on one and discuss any differences in Team workouts from previous schools compared to what our Coaches are doing? Example would be Haynes King- does he feel better about his progress with our Coaches compared to Texas A&M?

KQ- I'm not going into my one-on-one conversations with anyone, that is private information if they happened at all and would not be something I would talk about on here. Here is what I can tell you, the workouts are pretty intense and the camp is more like what Nick Saban would do. The kids who played for Saban guys' like Kirby or Jimbo totally understand how the camp is done for example and like the S&C is similar to that as AJ Artis indirectly comes from that same coaching tree via Tennessee.

How do you see the RB burn playing out with 5 guys seemingly in the mix to get carries?

KQ- I think that is going to be week to week and game plan to game plan. I think Dontae Smith and Jamie Felix are the two guys I feel really confident will consistently be in the rotation and I think Jamal Haynes is creating a role for himself right now, but other than that it is pretty open. Trey Cooley, Evan Dickens or even the walk-ons like Daylon Gordon or Englan Williams could see some PT.

Forgive me if I missed this but did something happen trevion Cooley?

KQ- As I said elsewhere I really have no idea. If I knew it would depend on how I knew if I could tell you what I know.

In your opinion who has been the best position coach since you been covering Georgia Tech?

KQ- It was probably Charles Kelly because he was just a great all-around coach and he produced a lot of NFL guys with a mix of high-profile talent like Morgan Burnett or found ways to make guys really max out with their ability. He was really good at that. I thought Jeff Monken on the offensive side of the ball was a real strong coach and they took a huge hit with the slot guys when he left to become a head coach. It just depends on the criteria, but Kelly was probably the biggest loss on the defensive side during CPJ's tenure and he really was a killer recruiter too.

FOOTBALL Brooks Named to Bednarik Award Watch List

Georgia Tech junior among 85 preseason candidates for national defensive player-of-the-year honor

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech junior defensive back LaMiles Brooks (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian Academy) is on the official watch list for the 2023 Chuck Bednarik Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday. The Bednarik Award is presented annually to college football’s most outstanding defensive player.

Brooks is coming off an exemplary sophomore campaign, in which he racked up three interceptions (third in the Atlantic Coast Conference), 10 passes defended (12th in the ACC) and 52 tackles (tops among Georgia Tech defensive backs, fourth on the team overall). He was graded as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s No. 3-ranked safety by Pro Football Focus in his first season as a starter, earning all-America grades (80 or higher) from PFF in both pass coverage (86.8) and overall defense (81.5).

He turned in one of the nation’s finest defensive performances of last season against Virginia (Oct. 20), when he recorded a career-high nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups to go along with a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery, becoming one of only 16 NCAA Division I FBS players since 2000 with as many nine tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception return for a touchdown in the same game. He also helped spur the Yellow Jackets’ 21-17 win at No. 13 North Carolina (Nov. 19) with an interception of UNC all-American Drake Maye, which snapped Maye’s string of consecutive passes without an INT at 195, stalled a UNC drive inside its red zone and set up what proved to be the Jackets’ game-winning touchdown drive.

Semifinalists for the 2023 Bednarik Award will be announced on Nov. 13, followed by the selection of three finalists on Nov. 28. The winner of the 29th-annual Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 7, and the formal presentation of the award will be made in March in Philadelphia.

Brooks and the Yellow Jackets open the 2023 campaign on Friday, Sept. 1 when the host Atlantic Coast Conference rival Louisville in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Annual Jackets Golf Outing

About that time to start planning! Last year was a bit of a struggle to find a place, so hopefully planning earlier will help with that. Really don’t want it to interfere with fan day this year either. let’s hear dates and course ideas. Would be nice to play on the south side if we can get on a nice course. Maybe someone with Club Corp connections. Shotgun start is always best if we can get enough people as well.

Please send me a new PM if you are playing that way it’s easy for me to keep up with. If you are new to the site and want to play you are more than welcome to come join!
