A fun look back at the history of bowl games

Network Scoop on Expansion and GT

Gene Williams of Warchant is reporting this as of this morning. That is our FSU site and he is extremely plugged in at FSU.

“The most interesting and shocking nugget that came my way from a well-placed TV insider is that the Big Ten is talking to Georgia Tech. I wanted to discount this because Tech obviously isn’t much of a TV draw and has been on the decline for the past few decades. Apparently, the Big Ten did a deep dive into the numbers, think GT can be relevant again and want to get in the Atlanta/Southeast market. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Atlanta is in the heart of SEC country. And Georgia Tech is another AAU school, which would keep the academics in the Big Ten happy.

Let’s assume there is something to this nugget. If there is, what does that mean for Florida State?

- It’s disheartening that Georgia Tech might get a pass out of the ACC before FSU does, but this could be incredibly positive.

- I didn’t get any details on the question everyone wants to know – ‘How does any ACC school leave the conference and avoid financial ruin with the Grant of Rights running through 2036?’ I didn’t get a straight answer on how that could happen but was told that it would get worked out.”

BBQ in Georgia

Morning... Georgia Public Broadcasting filmed a documentary focused on the role of BBQ in Georgia culture, particularly around election cycles... The documentary was filmed at several Georgia based BBQ restaurants (including ours)... I asked KQ if he thought some of y'all would be interested in seeing it...he said he thought you might, so here it is... :)

Adapt or Die

So I’m not so sure what some of you, pining for college football’s yesteryear, are hoping to accomplish by shouting “THE GAME IS RUINED!!!” every time one of our players leaves…yet when someone comes our way it’s “HELL YEAH!”. These message board freak-outs every time we lose a player, especially one that wasn’t on the team a year ago and didn’t even crack the All-ACC honorable mentions, is getting out of hand.

It’s a $1 Billion+ industry filled with guaranteed $80MM contracts for coaches, followed by $30MM buyouts, paying for $200MM training facilities, and paying for such idiotic shit as locker rooms with a personal TVs for highlights and LED lighting. The bitching would have a point if the money involved in the sport wasn’t getting so frivolous for everyone BUT athletes.

The history of college football has never made the student athlete guarantees. At best it’s been full of one-year contracts and rampant processing, forced redshirting and medicals, limited degree options, and exploitation of their original “NIL” rights. They typically took the fall if they were caught getting paid under the table. I have no heartache with any player seeking money very few of us could have fathomed at that age.

I’m grateful we have a head coach who is adapting, no matter how unstable the earth beneath the game is. As I said in another thread…trust this staff in its evaluation and its valuation. If they let someone walk it’s because they can replace the position economically or upgrade it versus what the departed player was requesting. Hopefully we move towards having the legal framework of multi-year contracts and representation guardrails to protect players.
