After watching the FSU win and some other CFB games so far... how would you revise your expectations of how our season plays out? Is the ceiling higher than you thought before? Is something like 10-2 and playing FSU/Clemson or someone similar in the ACCCG on the table in a best case scenario?

KQ- Well like I said before the season we have no idea who is good and who isn't aside from probably Notre Dame and UGA on the GT schedule. Miami looked sharp, but Florida is also a trainwreck similar to what FSU is turning into right now only further off the rails. VaTech looked horrendous against Vandy who basically played that game with a CPJ era option QB who tore them up and they even ran some triple option plays in that game. They just bullied the Hokies so they have a lot to work on to be competitive IMO. I thought Syracuse was about what I thought they were, pretty average with a very good TE and a very good RB. They got gashed by a not great Ohio team at times. So what does that mean for GT? I'm not sure. GT wasn't exactly on against Georgia State and the defense has work to do and the run blocking took a step back this week so I'm not ready to change any predictions, but the ceiling for this team remains high if they can square the defense away and get back to physical football.

Loved the physical brand of football displayed against FSU. It is like coming out of the dark ages from the Goof era. I think I had read or heard before that practices under TFG were no tackling / minimal contact. Am I dreaming this or can you clarify?

KQ- They had some very light practices at times and he had all this data and processes behind what they were doing and when they would tackle and all this new age theory about it. It was far less physical than the practices I saw with CPJ or Richt at UGA or what Key is doing now. The first thing that Key changed was how they handled Tuesday and Wednesday practices and how much hitting they were doing. The moment he got the interim gig that was the first thing he changed.

How do we improve at stopping our opponent's first drive?

KQ- Well now having tape on the team you are playing should help a lot. That certainly didn't help in the first two games with all the new personnel at both FSU and Ga State. You are going to get someone's best on the opening drive typically and GT also has been good at it even going back to Patenaude as OC. The big key is maintaining your fundamentals as a team.

Refs, huh, what are they good for?

KQ- Someone needs to teach them the difference between a PANCAKE and a hold. Several of the drive-killing penalties were dudes just getting destroyed by Jackson Hawes or Leo Blackburn on the edge.

When they do film review, do they also have the audio recording of what was said in the helmet comms? Brent Key talked about how the coaches review themselves and figure out better ways to get the right call and communicate it to the players, and it made me wonder about this.

KQ- I don't believe so but I can ask. They have people charting the calls who are on the headset and can hear play calls.

Why didnt we retain a cross rival in the new ACC schedule rotation? Did Tech try to get one or did we just take what we got? Just for instance this is first year since 1983 we didnt play Clemson.

KQ- Georgia Tech made the decision to not have a permanent rival and just roll with rotating opponents. There are some old threads on here about that decision a year ago.

Keys to the game for GT vs Cuse?

KQ- It's very early to be talking keys to the game, but I think the Cuse TE and their RB are going to be the biggest issues for GT going into this week. I would add that this should be a higher scoring game than the first week based on what I saw from the Orange defense.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING From 2027 DB/Athlete Kamarui Dorsey...

From Hampton (Ga.) High:

"I did make it to the game this Saturday. It was a great experience, and the environment was even crazier. I really haven't gotten that far in my recruitment for any top schools or anything, but I'm loving Georgia Tech so far and for sure one of my top schools right now."

Still a lot of time left for Dorsey with him being a 2027 kid, but Georgia Tech is in on him early as his first major offer and have made a big impression so far.

Will call

Will call was a nightmare last night. No fault of the employees at all, they were hustling.

One suggestion is to give a printed ticket option. half of the crowd in line was older tech fans that couldn’t download their tickets. My dad always has this issue and it’s super frustrating to that generation. Trust me, I realize it should be easy, but they never remember how to do it.

Anyhow, the guy helping my dad, printed out the rest of the season for him. He mentioned that he really wishes they gave a printed option bc it would cut the line in half.

This doesn’t even address the rest of the issues about gettting into the stadium. It was a mess last night.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING From 3-star 2026 Cornerback Omari Bledsoe...

From Stewarts Creek (Tenn.) who was at the game Saturday:

"Georgia Tech hasn’t offered me yet, but it’s in the works and I feel it coming once high school football is over (this season). I just have to gather all of my film together. Georgia Tech's atmosphere is one of a kind, and I'll most definitely come again! I got invited to a private Adidas pro day camp and they put a list of colleges I could attend and I chose Georgia Tech! Georgia Tech would most likely be the next college that offers me. I have a good relationship with Coach Peoples, Coach Q and Coach McKenzie! I’ll most definitely make rounds and trips up to Georgia Tech a lot! Go Jackets!"

In my opinion it sounds like this could be one of the first 2026 commits if/when Georgia Tech offers. He's got got size at 6'4" and the frame to add weight as well. Pretty strong offer list already.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING From 4-star Rivals 250 CB Blake Stewart on Saturday's visit to Georgia Tech...

Sounds like Georgia Tech is in the mix for the 2026 target from Woodward Academy. Stewart's Rivals profile

I'm trying to track down more of the reaction from the long list of visitors on Saturday. Will update as they come in.

GTVB: Jackets Power Past New Mexico State

A career-best 23 kills from Larissa Mendes fuels Tech’s 1st win of 2024

THE FLATS – No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball (1-1) returned to its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, dispatching of New Mexico State (1-1) in four sets: 25-13, 25-13, 21-25, 25-11. Sophomore right side Larissa Mendes drove the Yellow Jackets offensively, finishing with a career-best 23 kills on .500 hitting as Tech collected its first win of the 2024 season.

QUICK HITS

  • Georgia Tech fans filled O’Keefe Gym marking the 30th consecutive sellout for the program dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Mendes finished with a career-best 23 kills, the most kills by a Georgia Tech underclassman since three-time All-American and Olympic medalist, Julia Bergmann, made 31 against Lipscomb back in 2021 (April 14, 2021).
  • Mendes made those 23 kills on .500 hitting, her fourth career .500+ hitting performance.
  • Senior outside hitter Tamara Otene secured her second double-double of the season and 24th of her career, finishing with 13 kills and 13 digs. It marks the first time in her five-year collegiate career that she has started a season with back-to-back double-doubles.
  • Otene didn’t stop there, securing three service aces, matching her career-best for the fourth time.
  • Senior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and junior DS/L Sofia Velez led the defense with 16 digs each (4.00/set).
  • Bertolino has secured 36 digs through just two matches, giving her 1,040 over her career, the 9th most by a Jacket in the modern scoring era (since 2008).
  • Bertolino was her usual self from the service line, racking up four aces. She now has seven aces this season and 111 over her career, just five shy of cracking the Top 10 for most career aces in program history.
  • For the second match in a row, senior middle blocker DeAndra Pierce was the most efficient scorer, racking up eight kills on .538 hitting. She is off to a strong start in her senior season with 15 kills on .480 hitting through two matches.

  • Senior setter Luanna Emiliano delivered her first 40+ assist match in White & Gold, securing 43 assists. She now owns 3,743 career assists after transferring into the program from UTRGV over the offseason.
  • This was head coach Michelle Collier’s 198th victory at Tech as she pushes to become only the second GT head coach to achieve 200 wins on The Flats.
