Walt Ehmer, RIP

Georgia Tech lost one its greatest alumni with the passing of Walt Ehmer on Friday. Walt was President and CEO of Waffle House.

Walt was a tireless supporter of Tech including serving as the Chair of the Alumni Association and a member of the Foundation board. He was a passionate fan of GT football and all our athletic programs.

Walt was not just respected but beloved by the Waffle House family and epitomized the definition of a servant leader. He also served on a number of charitable boards and organizations in Atlanta.

A favorite personal story that that will give you a good feel about Walt is that he loved to get behind the counter and cook when visiting Waffle House restaurants. It was not unusual to see him serving breakfast at the Tech Square Waffle House.

On the morning of my oldest son’s graduation from Tech, he went by the Waffle House early, and there was Walt behind the counter. He was talking with Walt when an older couple came in. Of course Walt greeted them and waited on them. My son started talking with the couple and they said “you must come here a lot if you know the cook.“ And the wife added “he seems quite bright, as well.” Of course, Walt said nothing, and only as they were leaving did my son reveal to the shocked couple that they had been served by the CEO.

Walt was incredibly humble, but possessed a wickedly dry sense of humor. He simply was a Great Tech Man in every sense.

Walt is survived by his wife, Kara and three children, all proud Georgia Tech graduates. He will be greatly missed.

PROVO, Utah – No. 19 Georgia Tech volleyball (4-1) secured its first ranked victory of the season on Saturday night, taking down No. 14 BYU (4-1) inside a packed Smith Fieldhouse in Provo. Spectacular team defense and an unrelenting attack from Tamara Otene and Larissa Mendes earned the Yellow Jackets a thrilling five-set victory on the road.
QUICK HITS
  • Georgia Tech has defeated at least one Top-15 opponent in each of the last four seasons (since 2021) for the first time in program history.
  • This was the 35th Top 25 victory in program history, the 11th of the Michelle Collier era and the
  • Tech has now won four straight non-conference matches against ranked opponents after defeating No. 12 Ohio State (twice) and No. 8 Penn State last season.
  • Georgia Tech is just the 10th team to defeat BYU inside Smith Fieldhouse over the last 10 seasons (since 2015).
  • Senior outside hitter Tamara Otene unleashed a season-high 24 kills (4.80/set). She finishes the weekend with a team-best 41 kills (5.125/set) over just two matches.
  • Otene secured her team-leading fourth double-double of the season, making 13 digs to go along with her 24 kills.
  • Sophomore right side hitter Larissa Mendes produced another incredible offensive performance, finishing with 21 kills. It’s her second 20+ kill match of the young season (23 vs. New Mexico State) after only reaching the 20-kill mark once last year (21 vs. Florida St.).
  • Mendes made her 21 kills on .459 hitting. She is hitting .300 or better in all three matches with 25 or more attacks in 2024.
  • Senior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino filled the stat sheet, delivering her third double-double of the year with 10 kills, 13 digs, four aces and a block.
  • Those four aces bring her career total to 131, tied with Amanda Medrow (1996-99) for the ninth most in program history.

  • Soares recorded her 2nd-career double-double, finishing with 23 assists and 13 digs.
  • Senior setter Luanna Emiliano secured 40 assists, her second 40+ assist night in White & Gold. She narrowly missed out on a double-double of her own, finishing with nine digs.

FOOTBALL Couch Coach Vs GA ST

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on the field vs. The real GSU. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

A 23pt win on a night you probably gave a C- performance is coaches dream. I’m happy that GSU made this a competitive game, so we can continue to work on our deficiencies in order to be that ACC title contender we aspire to be.

Biggest difference btw game 1 & 2 was our defensive gap integrity. We reverted back to some bad habits that I hope we fix immediately

giphy.gif

Here we have a DL stunt that we use to call EAT (Ends first and Tackle loop) The DL execute it well creating two unblocked defenders from the run. We have the perfect vice on the RB, but due to a poor angle by #1 LaMiles Brooks, he loses outside leverage on the RB which led to a big gain

giphy.gif

Clean up on Aisle 7. Appear we are running a spacing concept with a built in swing screen. Great job by #11 Jamal Haynes turning nothing into something

giphy.gif

***NEW PLAY ALERT***

Never seen this in my life. We motion to
Quads and we have bubble & tunnel screen on the same side. I assume this is to take advantage of the overpursuit to the Bubble #2 Singleton and trying to sneak the tunnel screen behind them. You can tell the defense prepped for WR screens all week. Look at the good job being done by the DL at retracing their steps and making the play

TE appreciation gifs. I see why #85 Jackson Hawes PFF grade was a 82 now.
giphy.gif

Look at how Hawes and Goede down block GSU DL into oblivion to create a lane for Haynes TD
giphy.gif

THIS IS NOT A HOLD! Hands inside on the breastplate & feet never stop moving! That’s a big boy pancake by Hawes.

giphy.gif

More counter action. Great down block initially by Blackburn. Ironically, his block here looks like it should’ve been called for hold and wasn’t. Great job by #9 Avery Boyd with the whirly bird then kick out block. Now we have a race btw Rutledge and Williams on who’s the fastest OL.

giphy.gif

Another example of our DBs being in bad position on the fit. DB over runs the tackle, didn’t break down and bad attack angle which allows the WR to get the outside

giphy.gif

We have Cover 0 man blitz meaning there is no Deep help. Good job by the CBs sorting the exchange of the WRs. This is a really good throw, but #6 Rod Shelly could’ve made this a big tougher by not allowing the WR to break his inside leverage by crossing his face.

giphy.gif

FUNDAMENTALS & TECHNIQUE !!!
My Day 1 Couch Coach guys remember, if you can count to 3 then you can play for me. GSU has 3 WRs to the field. MLB in zone, 95% of the time are zoning off of the 3rd receiving threat to their side. Which in this case would be the on On line WR. Inexplicably, Efford open his hips to the right. By doing so, gets stacked in the same zone as the WLB. That space created makes the 3rd and long an easy conversion and the defense stays on the field

giphy.gif

Eye discipline. The Defense is man coverage but get caught looking in the backfield. Initial look, this should've been the Safety/Nickel covering the TE

giphy.gif

@Techwreck47 we had a blitz called with #9 Romello Height dropping into coverage. You would Like Brooks to make this tackle, but it is a big gain due to Height taking the block on squarely instead of spltting the OL on his outside half with his inside shoudler. If he takes it on with his right shoulder, it will either: 1) Give Brooks a better angle to make the tackle 2) Height makes the tackle or 3) forces the ball back inside to the rest of the defenders.

GTVB: Jackets Sweep Lipscomb for Collier’s 200th win at GT

Tamara Otene’s double-double lifts No. 19 Tech to 2nd sweep of the season

PROVO, Utah – No. 19 Georgia Tech volleyball (3-1) wasted little time on Friday night, dispatching of Lipscomb (2-3) in three sets with identical scores: 25-16, 25-16, 25-16. Senior outside hitter Tamara Otene was the catalyst from the very start, finishing with 17 kills on .517 hitting and 12 digs as the Yellow Jackets claimed their second straight sweep and head coach Michelle Collier’s 200th victory at Georgia Tech.

QUICK HITS

· This was head coach Michelle Collier’s 200th victory at Tech. She already holds program records for the most ACC victories (111) and NCAA Tournament victories (seven), as she now becomes just the second Tech head coach to reach the 200-win plateau. (AVCA Hall of Famer Shelton Collier – 271 wins (1991-2001)).

· Senior outside hitter Tamara Otene had a career night, finishing with 17 kills, the most she’s ever had at Tech in a three-set match, .571 hitting and 12 digs.

· It is her third double-double of the young season and the 25th of her career.

· This marks the first match in Otene’s career in which she has hit 10+ kills on .500+ hitting in a sweep.

· Tech won the second set 25-16. The Jackets have won all four 2nd sets so far in 2024 by an average score of 25-13.

· Junior libero Sofia Velez led the team with 13 digs. She has made 10+ digs in all four of her starts at Tech and in all but one of her 83 career matches played (79 matches at Trinity Valley CC (2022-23)).

· Senior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino finished with 10 kills and three aces. She has now made at least one ace in each of her first four matches on the season for the first time in her All-American career.

· Bertolino and Otene combined for 27 kills, four more than Lipscomb could muster as a team (23).

· Junior middle blocker Liv Mogridge imposed her will at the net, finishing with three blocks, including a pair of blocks in GT’s 8-0 scoring run to finish off the match.

· Senior setter Luanna Emiliano led the way with 33 assists (11.0/set), her highest average as a Yellow Jacket.

SET BY SET

Set 1 (GT 25 – Lipscomb 16)

The Jackets got off to a great start thanks to a pair of aces from Mogridge to make it 3-1 out of the gates. The Jackets maintained that pressure from the service line, forcing Lipscomb into uncomfortable attacks and clapping back with furious swings of their own. The Bisons managed to cut the lead to 13-10, only for Tech to respond with a 6-2 run, returning to the comfort of a seven-point lead (19-12). Another late kill from Otene helped seal the set, 25-16, a score that would become awful familiar over the next hour of play. Otene was all over the court from the start, finishing the first set with six kills and six digs while hitting .500 and adding an ace while Tech held Lipscomb to .000 hitting.

Set 2 (GT 25 – Lipscomb 16)

Lipscomb seemed intent on keeping it close in the second set, working to a 7-7 tie in the beginning. But all that went away thanks to three excellent runs of serve from Emiliano, Bertolino and sophomore setter Heloise Soares. The three of them sent Tech on a 10-3 scoring run, putting the Jackets in control, 19-11, a lead they would maintain to the end of the set, 25-16. GT’s serving led to a multitude of free balls from Lipscomb, helping Tech hit a staggering .444 as a team in the second. Emiliano and Soares did a great job of spreading the offense with five different Jackets registering multiple kills. None more impressive than Otene, who led the offense with five kills on seven swings (.714 hitting). For the second set in a row, she led the team in digs, this time only needing three, tied for the most with Velez.

Set 3 (GT 25– Lipscomb 16)

The Bisons came out firing in the third, jumping in front, 8-12. But Tech showed its resilience, tying the match back at 13, thanks in part to yet another strong service run from Soares. The set was still in doubt, up 17-16, when Bertolino stepped up to the service line to lead Tech on an 8-0 scoring run, vanquishing all Lipscomb hopes and handing them a third straight 25-16 result. Bertolino made back-to-back aces on that run to make it 22-16, before Otene polished off her career performance with kill No. 17 on the final play. Velez came into her own in clutch time, delivering eight digs in the third while Mogridge and sophomore right side Larissa Mendes combined for a pair of blocks in the final scoring run.
