FOOTBALL RECRUITING Full feature on '25 commit Cal Faulkner...

from my trip to Jasper on Friday night. Some kids always seem to find themselves in the middle of the action, and he is one of those kids in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing how he develops on the college level at Georgia Tech.

FOOTBALL ACC Football Match-ups Week 10 - talking points

It is going to be an interesting weekend....

Pittsburgh (7-0, 3-0) at SMU (7-1, 4-0) - Both QB's (Eli Holstein & Kevin Jennings) are listed as game time decisions due to injury. Both are QB's that can run, and there is a drop-off to QB2. Jennings was as bad as it gets last weekend at Duke...does he rebound, or does he let last weekend affect him mentally? Does the Pitt offense wake up from a fall off last weekend where it was not required to do anything? UPDATE: Both QBs cleared per Dr. Pete Thamel

Duke (6-2, 2-2) at Miami (8-0, 4-0) -
Duke got exactly what they wanted to have a shot at a road upset....a 12:00pm Noon kick in a pro stadium 30+ minutes from campus on a beautiful fall day where there are a ton of things better to do than wake up early to get to the Hard Rock Stadium. Miami will have to manufacture their own energy....no question the more talented team by far. Everyone keeps waiting for the annual Miami slip up....but does Cam Ward continue to be Cristobal's eraser? With all of the talent at Cristobal's disposal on defense, they gave up a lot of points to VaTech, California, and Louisville. Duke does not have the offense of any of those teams.

ACC Bowl Eligibility - Clemson, Miami, Pittsburgh, SMU, and Duke are already bowl eligible. On Saturday, the winner of the Virginia Tech (5-3, 3-1) at Syracuse (5-2, 2-2) game becomes ACC team #6 to be bowl eligible, while Louisville goes for win #6 at Clemson. In 8 match-ups, all since 2014, Louisville has never beaten Clemson.

C.J. Bailey progression for NCState - The 4-star true freshman QB was thrown into the fire with Grayson McCall's career ending injury, and has started to progress. Now with 7 game appearances and 4 starts under his belt, the game is slowing a bit for him. The past two weeks he has thrown for over 300 yards against California and Syracuse...combining to go 42-60 for 4 TD's and 1 INT. Something for GT fans to keep an eye on as our home game with them Thursday, November 21 looms large. Another thought...NCState needs 2 more wins for bowl eligibility with Stanford this weekend and Duke after that. Perhaps it would be good for them to become bowl eligible before their game with us to give them one less thing to care about in our game.

Can UNC get 2 more win's to be bowl eligible? - If it is going to happen, their game at the quitters of FSU should be win #5. After that, they host Wake Forest, go to Boston College, and then host NCState.

Saturday, November 2
  • Duke at Miami – Noon ET on ABC
  • Stanford at NC State – Noon ET on ACC Network
  • Virginia Tech at Syracuse – Noon ET on The CW
  • North Carolina at Florida State – 3:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network
  • Louisville at Clemson – 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN
  • Pitt at SMU – 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network

Investigating The Accuracy of College Football Rankings (MacKelvie)

This video is great. I searched and didn't see it mentioned anywhere. Apologies if it is (you can all yell at me and then delete it.) ;)

The basic conclusion of this video is that recruiting rankings are designed to predict a player's likelihood of being drafted, but aren't particularly good at it...especially at the high-end of performance (and for QBs, OL & LBs). And they aren't that good at predicting who will be an impact player in college (particularly for the OL.)

But there is a caveat...no team has won a college championship in the last couple of decades without at least one top ten recruiting class. Fascinating.

New 2025 Offer

Talked with him last week. Not really committed to Georgia State anymore. VT and Oregon State offered and he took a visit to Ole Miss last weekend and received an offer. Dennis is the hottest name among OT's in the state, but doesn't seem too great with Damola considering the visits and this offer now.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Full update story on Grayson's Fuller and Victor...

As you'll read in the story, it sounds like Fuller is going hard after his teammate Victor to try to get him to join the Jackets' 2025 class. We'll see how it plays out as several other schools are trying to pry Victor away from Boston College as well.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Chatted with Buford wide receiver Jordan Allen...

Briefly last night. He said he is thankful for the other schools that have reached out to him in the last several weeks, including Georgia Tech, and appreciates Coach Trent McKnight for believing that he can "make an impact in the offense." He said he is still committed to Louisville and doesn't have any visits set up to Tech or anywhere else at the moment but will let me know if that changes. He said is top priority right now is helping Buford win a region title, which they can clinch with a win tonight at Mill Creek, and then on to the state playoffs as Buford is one of the top contenders in AAAAAA.

Can't argue with a kid keeping the main thing the main thing right now and focusing on his team rather than recruiting. I could see him eventually making his way to Georgia Tech for a visit for either Miami or NC State, but we will see. Buford finishes the regular season tonight and then has an off week on Nov. 8 weekend before the state playoffs begin Nov. 15-16 so might have a little free time on his hands to get to The Flats for the Miami game.

He's a good, playmaking, slot-type receiver that has accumulated more than 30 offers. He leads Buford in receiving this year with 446 yards and three touchdowns in an offense that runs the ball a good bit.

FOOTBALL Biggers earns invite to East-West Shrine Bowl...

From Georgia Tech Athletics:

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech defensive lineman Zeek Biggers (Salisbury, N.C./West Rowan H.S.) has received an invitation to participate in the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl. The 100th edition of Shrine Bowl, one of the nation’s most prestigious college football all-star games and pro football showcases, is set for Jan. 30, 2025 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Biggers, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound senior, has made 22-consecutive starts at defensive tackle for Georgia Tech, which leads the team’s defensive players and is tied for second on the squad overall. He leads the Yellow Jackets’ interior defensive linemen with 18 tackles in nine games this season, including 2.5 for loss. He’s also recovered a fumble.

In addition to being a key cog in Tech’s defense, Biggers is one of the Jackets’ top special teams performers with two blocked kicks this season and four in his career. His two blocked kicks this season are more than 96 of the 133 teams in NCAA Division I FBS have recorded.

Biggers would be the 29th Yellow Jacket to play in the Shrine Bowl since its inception in 1925 and the first since linebacker Charlie Thomas in 2023. Notable Shrine Bowl alumni include Tom Brady, John Elway and Walter Payton and Georgia Tech standouts Darren Waller (2014) and Darryl Smith (2003).

The 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl will be televised nationally on NFL Network.

FOOTBALL Couch Coach vs. Virginia Tech

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. VT. These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.

A game of frustration and “what ifs”,

giphy.gif

“What if” 3 guys do not miss the block on the nickel back that made the tackle? If blocked decently, it’s a 3-4 yard gain and your playbook opens up some on 3rd and short

giphy.gif

giphy.gif

‘What if’ Pyron throws the ball and give Singleton a chance? Not sure what he saw to make him pull the ball down but this is 6 as Singleton beat the deep middle safety for a possible TD

giphy.gif

A lost of focus here by Rod Shelley. He’s responsible for the TE as it appear to be man coverage here. Shelley appears to put his eyes on the QB and loses the TE. If he actually green dog, (blitz if your man assignment blocks) he could’ve kept him in or at minimum been attached to him.

giphy.gif

“What if” Efford was there, would he have called out the tackle over formation and communicated that TE is eligible. Lightsey is unsure who to cover and vacates the middle for an easy TD

giphy.gif

Is Buster putting shackles on Pyron by telling him who to throw to presnap? Looks like it on this play. We have hitches on the edge and verticals by the TEs. VT running a CB blitz. Singleton needs show his numbers immediately as he’s open early & not curl at the defender. I question Buster here bc Pyron is looking over the middle. VT got away with a hold/PI on Beetham and Hawes wide open for a 1st down as well

giphy.gif

Notre Dame did pretty well vs our Cov 2 and it appears we corrected our mistakes especially with the MLB closing the space and carrying the middle vertical threat. Good job by Shelly sinking, firing with his facemask up seeing his target and tackling thru the ball carrier

giphy.gif

The flashes we see with Tahj Butler vs run is just beautiful football. Nothing looks better than a confident LB seeing it and going to make the play. He needs to be getting reps at WLB spot to get him ready for the future

giphy.gif

One of the few times our pass rushers looked like some of the other elite passers we envy every weekend. Great job by Height using his hands and even better fake to the inside to get Drones to declare out of the pocket to create the sack

giphy.gif

Great design + Plus bad read = INT

Presnap you have 6 blockers vs 6 defenders. Probably should’ve checked to run, but you have 2v1 in the boundary, well that’s until the LB buzz to the flat. 2 issues: I’m not sure why Singleton ran up the field on his smoke screen. What is Pyron looking at? Singleton never looked back and the defender is in Pyron vision

Enters the dough boy
giphy.gif

giphy.gif

Remember when i said, we began to see different routes/concepts once Philo came in, this dagger concept is something that i haven’t seen be made available for Pyron. You get the clearout by Rutherford and the dig behind it from Singleton. A better throw by Philo and this is 6

giphy.gif

What a drop in the bucket throw. Poor pass pro by the RB but Philo does a great job climbing up and letting it fly. Great throw and catch!

giphy.gif

Good job by Philo making the quick read. This is why you do not the let the ball into your body bc this will eventually happen. Uncharacteristic day by Rutherford

giphy.gif

Can’t let the pressure rattle you! Another slot blitz from VT. Philo needs to hold to ball a tick longer and get ready to throw the corner route to Rutherford (the slot WR)
