Nov 17, 2018

6 years ago, we beat UVA in overtime to move to 7-4.

Why do I bring this up? That was the last time GT football was 3 games over .500 in a season. The year before scooter ran our program into the ground.

We need a big W in 12 days to move back to 3 games over .500. It's been 6 years. Our fans need this. Show up Jacket fans, lets give our team a loud and obnoxious (for NC ST) crowd, and keep moving the needle back to where we all know it can be. Brick by brick.

FOOTBALL Miami dirty shots

what do y’all think? Was Miami just playing physical defense or were they being dirty? On a couple of plays it seem like they were holding the player up and then another player would come in and take a shot at them. That seems to happen to Jamal Haynes. And then Haynes King got hit after he had been down on the ground at least a second. The shot on Trey Cooley after the facemask was brutal but maybe that was just a good physical play and unlucky for Trey. Thoughts?

The Perfect Game

Ok. Maybe a little hyperbolic. Just a little. And I'm more than a little buzzed. But hear me out.

Haynes King was obviously not himself today. Despite being 100% on completions, he only did it on 6 attempts for 32 yards. It would have been completely understandable to keep him out one more week and try to get to bowl eligibility with one more attempt against a pretty bad NC State. The fact that he actually marched out there and did this is incredible. The fact that we also platooned our QBs throughout the game and won??? I'm struggling to remember when anybody has won a significant game swapping QBs in every other series, let alone within one. Key went all in on his chips on a game nobody expected us to win and pulled it off.

Yes - there were still bad timeouts. Yes - we still seemed to call some strange conservative calls while we were still ahead. But we had two injured QBs, our best two RBs out, and seemingly a dangerous uncalled targeting call on the ball holder every other play throughout the game - AND WE WON!

I think and hope Key can continue to improve and mature as a coach. The fact that we were able to pull this off with all of the mentioned issues makes me prouder to be a GT fan that I have been in quite a while. We could finish the season with 6 or 7 wins, but that's still immense progress after the clown I'm still excited for this team and figure we've got a puncher's chance in the remaining games of the season.

I mean... hey... we could end up 9-4, right?

P.S. Just an incredible performance by Hayes. I don't know that I've seen that kind of toughness since Nesbitt.

FOOTBALL Brent Key media avail 11/7

Key opened the presser saying he had no injury updates to share on QB Haynes King or anyone else. King has been practicing and he is out there and they will see where he is at leading up to the game.

Student-Athletes of the Week: Aaroh Philo and Troy Stevenson IV

Scout Team Players of the Week: Lawson Pritchett (defensive), Joseph Mosley (special teams) and the entire scout team OL

Key said he is really excited about some of the young OLs.

The captains for the game are Haynes King, Jamal Haynes, Kyle Efford and Tren Tatum.

Key said that Miami is one of the best teams in the country if not the best and Cam Ward is a very special player who finds ways to win even when they've been down this season and that is a reflection on his leadership of their team.

I asked Key if they may go back to a 2-QB system like they used in 2022 at the end of the year and he joked they've been working some QBs at offensive tackle, he asked me to clarify if I meant piecing together a game plan around skillsets and I said yes, he said his goal is to have one voice and when you roll QBs there can be issues with cadence and false starts and different things and he wants a guy to get his rhythm. He said it is like baseball you don't take a pitcher out in the second and put him back in the fourth inning to pitch. He said because of the green dots they can't play all three together at the same time anymore (I had jokingly suggested this to him the other day).

On Miami's run D, Key said they are very talented and deep in the front seven and do a good job of supporting with the safeties in the box when they need to depending on personnel and situations. He said they are very multiple up front and they play all three fronts and stem and twist and can wreck things up front pretty quick so it will be a big challenge for them.

Key was asked about his relationship with Damon Stoudamire and Key said that they have a great relationship and Damon is 50% like Key and 50% the opposite (he made a GT nerd joke about himself) and he loves the way Damon coaches the game and his intensity and he no-nonsense relationship with people in recruiting and his tenacity and the fire he has on the road.

Key said that Nell Fortner is another coach he greatly admires and she is one of the best coaches in any sport in the last 25 years and he likes to pick her brain.

He loves what the women's volleyball basketball program is doing.

Key said Danny Hall has been here since he was a player and he used to go to games and heckle the opposing teams and support baseball and Hall and his wife have been great and they understand how to help.

He said Bruce Heppler has done an amazing job and when he sees him he will always just as a question to pick his brain a little bit.

I asked Key why they've had more success playing ranked teams and keeping in close games mostly with ranked teams during his time as HC and he said he can't put his finger on it and each one has been a different challenge and this is the first time they'll play #4 that he can remember and he said the mentality of GT is to be an underdog and GT is the ultimate underdog school and GT is made up of outcasts, castaways and people who weren't good enough, too short, too small, too fat or whatever and they come here and go through it as a student athlete or as a student at Georgia Tech and that underdog mentality is part of the DNA of the entire institution. He said they like to hear what they can't do like putting people in outer space or on Mars and building the biggest computers or building the smallest smart phone or running the biggest companies in the world, that is what makes the student body special here and you don't always realize that until later on. What the kids go through on a day-to-day basis at Georgia Tech prepares them for those challenges later in life. He said he wants to see 25,000 of us nerds together on Saturday in BDS and they can help change history and the outcome of the game.

On the tweaks from the bye week, Key said that everyone on offense took turns going over things and it was like that across the board in the program. He said from concentration to catching the ball before you run, hitting landmarks running, it was very detailed and focused on execution. He said they looked at the scheme and the scheme is personnel driven and what personnel changes they needed to make and what fits this group best is something they really worked on offensively.

Key said he has never engaged in any of the homecoming stuff, he is bummed he didn't get a chance to party or do any of that stuff. He said he wants the students to go to bed early or stay up all night and be in the stadium at 11 am on Saturday.

Chad asked him about Keylan Rutledge for a feature and Key aid that he has had a great impact on Jordan Williams and he is such a solid person and piece for them. He has a wide body and plays with a low center of gravity and he is a throwback player. Key said it is amazing how he came back from his injury and nearly having a toe cut off and removed and you are seeing him settle back in now.

I messed up my back jumping up and hitting a balloon and the David Gilmour concert on Monday and Key picked up on it last night at hoops and was joking with me about being on the IR when answering a question about seeing the shrinking gap this season with how they've lost games and played without key guys. He said that they talk about having urgency when they play and also patience for the process because that is a longer-term thing, injuries can't be excuses for poor play or execution and his job as the head coach is to put them in a position to win. If they don't execute then he can't sugarcoat it either. Everyone has injuries, that isn't an excuse. He thinks they've played the best defensive football since he has been back at GT over the last few weeks and he wants to get all phases playing their best while continuing to acquire and develop more depth through recruiting and that is the next step. They have to develop who they have and not lose sight of the process either. He said a lot of coaches can also derail themselves on Sunday or Monday by not looking at the details and focusing too much on the big picture. He said that is the fine line he has to walk as a head coach every day and being open-minded about evaluations of everything, but at the end of the day he is judged by the results, but you have to put some of that aside when you are building the program up.

Key was asked about Big Boi and if he was an Outkast fan and he said that he was in Atlanta in the 1990s of course he was and he could karaoke a lot of their songs back in the day. (I would pay to see this)

Key said that he feels a big charge from doing his radio show on campus and connecting with the students and he wants to be visible and approachable for the student body and also views it as a way to thank them for their support as well.

OT: Best lot for a small tailgate?

Taking my mom to the Miami game and we’ve always talked about doing a tailgate as a family for years. I finally want to be able to make that happen for her. I’m used to flying solo and taking MARTA so What’s the best lot for a smaller, low key tailgate? Meaning: we don’t have a generator or anything huge but need power and good bathrooms nearby. TIA

THE FLATS – Beginning its second season under head coach Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech opens its 2024-25 season with four games in 10 days, continuing with a Sunday afternoon date against North Florida at McCamish Pavilion (1 p.m. tip).

The stretch continues with a Nov. 12 contest against Texas Southern (7:30 p.m.). Those two games are part of the Peach State Classic, an early-season home multiple-team event (MTE) in which those opponents also will play Georgia.

North Florida, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, is coming off a 16-16 campaign a year ago, including a 9-7 mark in conference play.

Texas Southern, a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, went 16-17 overall in 2023-24 and 12-6 in SWAC competition.

Both games will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available on the ESPN app. Radio coverage is on the Georgia Tech Sports Network by Legends Sports and flagship station 680 the Fan (680 AM/93.7 FM). The Tech broadcast is also available in the SiriusXM app.

JACKETS OPEN IN STRONG FASHION

Georgia Tech opened the 2024-25 campaign with a 85-62 rout over visiting West Georgia on Wednesday evening at McCamish Pavilion.

Playing his first game in the White and Gold, Oklahoma transfer Javian McCollum led Georgia Tech (1-0) with a game-high 18 points. Kowacie Reeves, Jr., added 15 points and Baye Ndongo chipped in 10 to round out three scorers in double-figures for the Yellow Jackets. Ten different players scored for the Jackets, who never trailed in the opener.

Thanks to five points from McCollum and four from Reeves, Tech raced out to an early 11-2 lead and never looked back. The Jackets closed the first half with a 26-13 run and led by 21 at the break, 50-29. The advantage never shrank to less than 20 in the second period, despite making just one field goal in the final nine minutes of the game.

Georgia Tech’s 23-point win was aided by seven assists from Naithan George and 10 rebounds from Colorado transfer Luke O’Brien, both game highs. McCollum had four steals to go along with his 18 points.

• Tech assisted on 20 of its 33 made field goals (60.6 percent).

Luke O’Brien posted his sixth career double-figure rebound game with 10 vs. West Georgia (the previous five all in the 2022-23 season). Career high 14 vs. Seton Hall on March 14, 2023.

• Reeves, Jr., has started all 33 games Tech has played with him on the team.

Baye Ndongo scored 10 points (on just 5 FGA) with seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks against UWG. It was his 20th career double-figure scoring game.

GENERAL STORYLINES FOR 2024-25

110th season - Georgia Tech is playing its 110th season of basketball in 2024-25, having compiled an all-time on-court record of 1,451-1,324 (22 wins and one loss from the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons were vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions).

Tech in the ACC - Tech will play its 46th season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, having won the conference championship in 1985, 1990, 1993 and 2021. Prior to that, Tech competed in the Metro Conference for three seasons from 1975-78, was an independent from 1964-75, and was a member of the Southeastern Conference for 32 years from 1932-64, winning one title in 1938.

• Tech was projected to finish 12th in the ACC standings last season by a vote of the conference’s official media panel. Tech has finished ahead of its media projection seven of the last eight seasons.

• Tech has a total of seven scholarship newcomers on its roster, including three freshmen who were judged the nation’s 20th-best recruiting class (247Sports composite), and four transfers in a class ranked 53rd.

• Tech opens the 2024-25 season with seven consecutive home games, its longest homestand to open a season since 1980-81. After three straight games away from home (Oklahoma, North Carolina, Northwestern), the Jackets will have five more in a row at McCamish Pavilion, including conference tilts against Duke, Notre Dame and Boston College.

• Tech will play 19 regular-season games at McCamish Pavilion, the most since the 2016-17 season, when the Jackets played 21 total home games, including two on the NIT.

• Of the three new members of the ACC, Tech has faced SMU the most (8-6 all-time, last meeting in 1986). The Jackets are 0-3 vs. California (last meeting 2012) and 1-2 vs. Stanford (last meeting 2000).

TECH AT A GLANCE

Second-year head coach Damon Stoudamire began a re-build the Tech roster last season and guided the team to 14 victories (seven ACC wins), including big wins over top-25 teams Mississippi State, Duke, Clemson and North Carolina, all of whom played in the NCAA Tournament.

Tech returns a strong core of four players, including 6-3 senior guardLance Terry (College Park, Ga.), who redshirted last season with an injury after averaging in double figures for the Yellow Jackets in 2022-23. Also back are three of Tech’s top four scorers from last season, 6-7 senior wing Kowacie Reeves, Jr. (Macon, Ga.), 6-3 sophomore point guard Naithan George (Toronto, Ontario) and 6-9 sophomore forward Baye Ndongo (Mboro, Senegal).

The three returnees from the 2023-24 team accounted for 42 percent of that team’s points, 40 percent of its shots taken and 56 percent of games started. If Terry’s numbers are added, those percentages become 55 percent of the points, 53 percent of the shots taken and 69 percent of the starts.

Stoudamire and his staff have built around those four by signing the 20th-ranked recruiting class in the nation (247Sports composite) - 6-5 guard Jaeden Mustaf (Bowie, Md.), 6-11 center Doryan Onwuchekwa (Dallas, Texas) and 6-8 forward Darrion Sutton (St. Louis, Mo.).

They also brought in four transfers who are expected to be key contributors in 6-2 guard Javian McCollum (Fort Myers, Fla./Oklahoma), the 31st-ranked player in the portal, 6-8 forward Luke O’Brien (Littleton, Colo./Colorado), 6-8 forward Duncan Powell (Dallas, Texas/Sacramento State) and 7-2 center Ryan Mutombo (Atlanta, Ga./Georgetown).
