FOOTBALL Dan Mullen would not be a good hire, and here’s why

every time someone suggests Dan Mullen as our next coach, another cleat gets its wings

I’m not going to lead with that recruiting comment because I don’t need to. Dan Mullen didn’t get fired for that recruiting comment. He got fired because he built a losing culture once he got his players in his program and because he went 2-9 across his last 11 P5 games. He’s Collins without the branding.

Mullen had great seasons his first two years at Florida with the guys McElwain recruited. I’ll give him credit there. But he wouldn’t be coming into nearly as stacked a roster here as he had in 2018. Once he got his guys in his system, it started going downhill.

You can look at the no.13 finish in 2020 as a success, but that’s only if you ignore the way that season ended. Going into the LSU game, Florida was #6 and sniffing at the door of the playoffs. Take care of business at home against an awful LSU and then on to the SEC championship—win and you’re in. Instead, a dude throws a shoe, giving the Tigers a much needed first down on their game winning drive. That’s a game where it shouldn’t have even been that close that LSU could’ve won off that penalty. Then Florida rattles off another two straight losses, including a Cotton Bowl that the team didn’t really show up for (and we got the old “our team would’ve won but we don’t care” routine that we seem to get every time an SEC team loses a bowl game.

Then we come into his last season, 2021. Again, including the last 3 games of 2020, Mullen goes 2-9 against P5 opponents in this span. One of those wins is Vandy. While those losses include Bama twice and georgia, they also include a loss to last-in-the-West LSU and a 23-point loss to South Carolina. After a loss at Kentucky that season, Mullen was asked if he was outschemed, and he replied that more total yards. Wonder where Collins learned it from.

A win against FCS Samford interrupted Florida’s losing streak. They put up 70 on them! Problem was, they gave up 42 points at halftime, the most in Florida history. At the following press conference, he dropped some kinda excuse/pity party about how calling a win disappointing was “disrespectful to the game”.

You want insane loyalty to bad assistant coaches? (You’re used to it as a GT fan) Mullen’s your guy. Asshole press conferences with no accountability? Ditto. Deteriorating, losing culture? Yep

Mullen had a great tenure at Mississippi State for their standards. But Florida wants to be competitive with georgia, compete for the conference title, and not give up 52 to an FCS team. Mullen showed he can’t do that at Florida, and they have more resources than GT. If he couldn’t do it at Florida with a Florida budget, why would he be able to do it here with a GT budget?

A Mullen hire to me is acknowledging that GT doesn’t want to compete for the ACC. I’d rather have Collins back. Pull the plug entirely and all that jazz.

Tough times for the Canes heading into this game. The question is if Mario can get that talent to respond and fight back. They are still a dangerous team.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Insider’s Thread: Florida three-star DE Elijah Douglas update

Pine Forest High School is once again one of Florida's top programs streaking through the regular season (9-0) ready to make another run to the state championship game. The defense has been stout again thanks in part to the play of three-star Georgia Tech end commit Elijah Douglas.

Douglas committed to the Yellow Jackets on June 12; he updates his relationship with the staff.

“It is pretty good,” Douglas said. “Since coach (Geoff) Collins got fired, I have developed a stronger relationship with coach Kenyatta Watson (dir. of scouting) and coach David Turner (AHC); they really like me. They see me helping the program and helping with the team’s success. They really like me a lot. I talk with coach (Brent) Key here and there.”

If Douglas can find a ride, he is wanting to take a game-day visit to Atlanta this weekend to watch the Yellow Jackets take on the Hurricanes.

Did you know...

UNC currently leads the Coastal with a 5-0 record and has 3 games left. They are underdogs to Wake this week and will be underdogs to NCSt final week of the season. They have a an easy gimme game in between with some lowly ole team from GA where surely they won't be looking ahead.

Duke is second in the coastal at 3-2 in conference but has a loss to us for tiebreaker purposes. They're a big favorite this week but will likely be an underdog at Pitt and at home vs. Wake to close out the year.

We sit in 3rd at 3-3. We are small favorites at home this week vs. a reeling Miami team that looks to have some quit in them, and then we travel up 85 as a long shot dog at UNC where there's no way we have a chance, right?

Pitt is hanging out in 4th at 2-3 and will be modest favorites in all three games they have remaining (@UVA, vs Duke, @Miami) but unfortunately for them they lost to us and couldn't win a potential tiebreaker.

Georgia Tech Launches Competitive Drive Initiative

Initiative kicks off with Accelerate GT Match Program, with goal of making a $5 million impact by Dec. 31

THE FLATS – In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.

“I’m proud and excited to announce the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative and the kickoff of the Accelerate GT Match Program,” Georgia Tech director of athletics J Batt said. “I have learned in a very short time that Georgia Tech fans and alumni are passionate about our student-athletes and have a desire to make an impact on their ability to compete at the highest levels, both on the field and in the classroom. Through the generosity of the Georgia Tech Foundation, anyone that contributes to the Accelerate GT Match Program between now and Dec. 31 will not only double the impact that they make, but will also double the benefits they receive as an A-T Fund donor. We’re grateful for the Institute, the Georgia Tech Foundation and, of course, everyone who contributes to the Competitive Drive Initiative for the impact that they are making towards the success of Georgia Tech student-athletes.”

“It is no small feat that Georgia Tech’s student-athletes successfully compete at the highest level of collegiate sport while also completing rigorous academic degree programs,” said Ángel Cabrera, president of Georgia Tech. “Now more than ever, philanthropic support like the Competitive Drive Initiative can make a lasting impact on the educational and athletic journeys of these deserving, hard-working Yellow Jackets.”

As an incentive to contribute to the Accelerate GT match program by Dec. 31, not only will the gift be matched by the Georgia Tech Foundation, but so will the contributor’s benefits in the way of A-T Fund giving levels and priority points (e.g. – a person that makes a $500 contribution to Accelerate GT by Dec. 31 will receive benefits at the Heisman ($1,000) giving level and receive 20 A-T Fund Priority Points, instead of 10).

To be eligible for the dollar-for-dollar match, a donor must make a new gift to the Athletic Scholarship Fund by Dec. 31. For donors that made gifts to the Athletic Scholarship Fund during the 2022 Giving Year (July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022), a new gift is defined as any amount greater than that donated in 2022, and the match will be applied to the amount of the new gift. For those who did not make an Athletic Scholarship Fund donation in 2022, their entire gift is eligible to be matched.

The Competitive Drive Initiative is a part of Transforming Tomorrow, Georgia Tech’s $2 billion comprehensive campaign to build a foundation for advancing the Institute and its impact — on people’s lives, on the way we work together to create innovative solutions, and on our world — for decades to come.
