FOOTBALL Leonard Named Member of NFF Hampshire Honor Society

Georgia Tech TE honored for excellence on the field and in the classroom

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech tight end Dylan Leonard (Milton, Ga./Milton H.S.) has been named a member of the National Football Foundation’s prestigious Hampshire Honor Society, the NFF announced on Wednesday.

To be considered Hampshire Honor Society membership, a player must have graduated or be on pace to graduate before the 2023 season, have no more than one season of eligibility remaining, maintained an undergraduate grade-point average of 3.2 or higher and been a starter or a significant contributor during the 2022 season.

Leonard earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgia Tech in December 2022 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in analytics. Earlier this year, he was named an Atlantic Coast Conference postgraduate scholarship recipient.

Leonard arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 2019 and quickly earned a scholarship after appearing in all 12 games as a true freshman. He has gone on to make 20 starts in 38 games as a Yellow Jacket (including eight starts in nine contests last season) entering his final season of eligibility in 2023. He has also participated in several community service initiatives during his time on The Flats, including with Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and local youth organizations.

Leonard and the Yellow Jackets wrap up their spring practice season on Saturday when Georgia Tech holds its White and Gold Game, presented by Georgia’s Own Credit Union, at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and admission is FREE. Click HERE for more details.

Tasha Butts Named Head Coach at Georgetown

ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia Tech women’s basketball associate head coach and defensive coordinatorTasha Butts has been named the new women’s basketball head coach at Georgetown University, the school announced Tuesday.

“We wish Tasha the very best in her first head coaching opportunity at Georgetown University,” commented Georgia Tech head coach Nell Fortner. “We believe she will thrive and are super excited for this opportunity for her. It’s been a pleasure working with Tasha, and we wish her nothing but the best.”

In four years with the Yellow Jackets, Butts helped guide Georgia Tech to two NCAA Tournament appearances, two 20-plus win campaigns, nine wins over ranked opponents and the program’s highest outright Atlantic Coast Conference finish in program history at No. 3 in 2021.

During the 2021-22 season, Georgia Tech spent 14 weeks in the national rankings, climbing as high as No. 11 in the Associated Press poll. The Yellow Jackets recorded a marquee win in 2021 when they defeated No. 3/2 UConn, 57-44, in McCamish Pavilion, snapping the Huskies’ 240-game winning streak against unranked opponents. The win marked Tech’s first over a top-three opponent since 2009. The Yellow Jackets capped the season by making their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Butts helped Georgia Tech to a 2020-21 season meant for the record books as the Yellow Jackets made their 10th overall NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history. The Yellow Jackets finished third in the ACC to earn the program’s highest seeding in the ACC Tournament at No. 3.

Off the court, Butts was selected to the ABIS Women’s Basketball Black College Coaches Watch List in 2023 and was the recipient of the 2023 Giant Steps Award as an individual who has shown courage, heroism, triumph amid adversity and community activism through the power of sport.

A coaching veteran and former WNBA player, Butts arrived on The Flats with Fortner in 2019. She was promoted to associate head coach in April 2021 and added the title of defensive coordinator ahead of the 2022-23 season. A Georgia native, Butts returned to the Peach State after eight years as an assistant coach at LSU.

Butts becomes the 11th head coach in Georgetown women’s basketball history and will be introduced to the Georgetown community later today.

In the meantime, the LifeWallet a-hole at Miami is in major trouble financially as well. His company is bleeding money.

Prez Cabrera Walking the Talk!

Earlier this week I was scanning through the most recent edition of the GT Campaign Quarterly philanthropy magazine. Amongst the many sizable donations made in late 2022, I noted that President and First Lady Cabrera made a generous gift to the GTAA Competitive Drive initiative. I also note that other high net worth GT benefactors that don't typically donate to athletics followed President Cabrera's lead and did likewise. It is very encouraging to see our school President setting the tone with not only words but his actions, and in this case his wallet. I was pretty amazed when GTAA was able to rally $4.9M of individual donations to this campaign during a skinny 60 day window. I think I now understand how it happened!

BASEBALL ESPN Elevates Georgia Tech-Auburn to ACC Network

Yellow Jackets and Tigers will now battle at 7 p.m.

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech baseball’s Tuesday, April 11 showdown against longtime SEC foe Auburn has been selected by ESPN to air live nationally on ACC Network, moving the first pitch time to 7 p.m., ESPN and the ACC announced on Monday.

The game will be called by ESPN’s John Schriffen (play-by-play) and Chris Burke (analyst) on ACC Network and can also be heard on the Georgia Tech Sports Network with Wiley Ballard and Colin Lacy on 91.1 FM in Atlanta and nationally on the GT Gameday App.

The first meeting between the two teams this season was a classic, going back and forth for 12 innings before the Tigers ultimately took the game 12-11. Auburn is Georgia Tech’s second-most common opponent with 244 games played since 1897. Last year was the first year since 2014 that the two teams didn’t face each other.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a tough series against then-No. 13 North Carolina, where it had to play the entire three-game series in 24 hours due to inclement weather in the Georgia area over the weekend.

FOOTBALL Scrimmage Notes 4/8

I spent a good chunk of today pulling info from various sources on the scrimmage today. Brent Key had the team outside in terrible conditions and cold weather scrimmaging. You might ask why they didn't go to the indoor, the decision to outside was part of the process and a test of toughness that Key is trying to instill in the program and this is exactly what other coaches I know would do.

OFFENSE:

The scrimmage was obviously a little sloppy and not QB/WR friendly given the conditions. Everyone who played went hard though. It was hard to catch and hard for the QBs to throw.

Zach Pyron and Haynes King took the bulk of the snaps in the scrimmage. Pryon continued to show his ability to play in poor weather conditions. King is probably way less used to both cold and rain lately so keep that in mind.

The First-team OL did well despite Jakiah Leftwich still being out at RT, Jordan Williams moved to RT and Paul Tchio stepped up at played RG well. Tchio is now a lot closer to being the guy they expected with his foot in much better shape than a year ago.

It was a strong day for the RBs. Dontae Smith was back in action after sitting out the first scrimmage and he picked up where he left off with several strong runs. The guy I keep hearing the most about from that room is Evan Dickens the early enrollee freshman. He has been really impressive in spring practices and both scrimmages now.

The WR production despite the weather was very solid including a long TD catch by Abdul Janneh from Pryon. Christian Leary and Malik Rutherford are a nice tandem in the slot and DJ Moore has the potential to be a real difference-maker if he can stay healthy. Had he not injured his ankle he would've played and probably burned his redshirt last year.

The TEs are a little banged up but remain a real bright spot of the spring.

DEFENSE:

The defense looked much better than the first scrimmage and leveled up this week

Sylvain Younjouen made a couple of really impressive plays on D. He is trying to level up after seeing Keion White's success.

Both projected starting LBs missed the first scrimmage, but Braelen Oliver was back and he makes a major difference with the defense when he is in the lineup. Hopefully Andre White will be back for the spring game next week so folks can see them in action for the first time at GT.

Zeek Biggers continues to be really disruptive inside and keeps flashing

Sirad Bryant is another guy who had a really strong scrimmage.

OTHER NOTES:

As is typical at this point in camp a lot of guys are banged up so keep that in mind.
