Q's Take Sponsored by Inteleca: Key and his staff earn their coffee

A running joke on JOL for years comes via the great 1990s movie Glengarry Glen Ross by the brilliant David Mamet (also an amazing stage play in the 1980s), as Alec Baldwin's Blake aims to motivate a group of older outbound salesmen with his firey speech, "put that coffee down, coffee is for closers only!"

My favorite line is., "As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired." That's about two minutes into the clip below.

Instead of coffee, Coach Key hits the links in the Bobby Dodd Memorial Golf Tournament today and then heads off to a well-earned vacation. The full extent of this wild June commitment spree will unfold over the next few weeks as a few more targets announce their decisions, but the strong push put the Jackets into the top 15 of the Rivals.com team rankings bolstered by two very high-profile 4-star commits CJ Jackson and Koby Young.

It has been a wild month and the first time since the summer of 2019 GT has had any mojo in recruiting nationally or regionally.

What has been impressive to me about this is how much of team effort it has been led by Key at the top and flowing through his various assistants with Marco Coleman and Andrew Thacker looking like completely different people under his watch and both emerging as stronger recruiters, the new guys like Buster, Geep, Norval, Sherrer and Brumfield all grinding and then the development of guys like Crawford, Tillman, and Weinke along with Thack and Coleman as recruiters as well. This is the strongest overall recruiting staff I've seen at GT.

The support staff should also get acknowledged, Key knows the uphill battle GT faces in the state of Georgia and he added some tremendous people behind the scenes and that is paying off as well because that adds a layer of trust from the in-state coaches and kids.

The trick now will be holding on to these commits and improving where they can with the class and adding some key final pieces on the offensive line and at defensive tackle. The core is very strong though.

I would say it is an exciting time to be a Georgia Tech football fan and drink up boys and girls.

FOOTBALL New Official Tailgate thing for GT, Helluva Block Party

GT PRESS RELEASE

The destination for Georgia Tech football pregame entertainment will be centered on North Ave.

THE FLATS Helluva Block Party, the new destination for Georgia Tech football pregame entertainment, is set to debut this fall.

Helluva Block Party will transform the Georgia Tech football pregame experience by bringing the excitement and pageantry of Tech football to one of the most visible and vibrant areas of campus and the city of Atlanta – North Avenue. A three-block stretch of North Avenue – from Techwood Drive/Centennial Olympic Park Drive to Tech Parkway/Luckie Street – will be temporarily closed to traffic on gamedays to accommodate the activities. The area will close to traffic six hours before kickoff and the party will begin four hours prior to kickoff. The area will reopen for traffic at the beginning of the third quarter.

Surrounded by some of Georgia Tech’s most iconic locations, including the south entrances to Bobby Dodd Stadium and Tech Tower Lawn, Helluva Block Party will include:

· Tailgating (begins four hours prior to kickoff) – Options for no-hassle tailgating in Helluva Block Party include a wide variety of food vendors that feature some of the best food and beverages that Atlanta has to offer, including Coca-Cola products and Helluvienna Lager and Ale of an Engineer from New Realm Brewing Co. Additionally, all-inclusive private tailgate setups are also available on Tech Lawn and in premium spaces along Yellow Jacket Alley through REVELxp Premium and Turnkey Tailgating. The tailgating activities will feature fun for the whole family that was previously part of Wreckfest on Callaway Plaza, including interactive games and activities for fans of all ages.

· Yellow Jacket Alley (two-and-a-half hours prior to kickoff) – The Yellow Jackets’ arrival at Bobby Dodd Stadium will have a new home as a centerpiece of Helluva Block Party. The team’s buses will now arrive at the corner of North Avenue and Techwood Drive/Centennial Olympic Park Drive and, led by the Ramblin’ Wreck and the Georgia Tech marching band, the team will proceed along North Avenue and enter Bobby Dodd Stadium at Gate 1. Fans are encouraged to line the way to give the Jackets a raucous reception as they arrive at Bobby Dodd Stadium for gameday!

· Entertainment (immediately following Yellow Jacket Alley) – Once the Yellow Jackets are in the stadium, a pregame concert featuring a variety of popular musical acts will begin. The pregame entertainment will also include the traditional pregame show by the Georgia Tech Marching Band.

Helluva Block Party will shut down 30 minutes prior to kickoff to allow for fans to be in their seats when the team takes the field inside Bobby Dodd Stadium.

“We couldn’t be more excited to build on the great pregame traditions of Georgia Tech football by bringing them to one of the most vibrant locations of our campus and our city – North Avenue,” director of athletics J Batt said. “Being in the shadow of Bobby Dodd Stadium and Tech Tower, Helluva Block Party will merge the great traditions of our campus with an enhanced pregame atmosphere for fans.

“Additionally, many of our gameday traditions – including Yellow Jacket Alley and Wreckfest – have been previously centered on or near Callaway Plaza on the north end of the stadium.” Batt continued. “Beginning in 2024, construction on the new Student-Athlete Performance Center will make it unfeasible to continue to hold those events in those locations. By making these two great traditions centerpieces of Helluva Block Party, we can get a jump on that transition.

“We can’t wait to debut our new gameday experience to our incredible fans this fall!”

Full information about parking areas affected by the new arrangements will be available soon.

Tech Lands Seven on All-ACC Academic Softball Team

Most Jackets receive the honor in a single season since 2011

ACC Release

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball’s Sara Beth Allen, Mallorie Black, Chandler Dennis, Madison Dobbins, Ella Edgmon, Emma Kauf and Blake Neleman have each been selected to the 2023 All-ACC Academic Team, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday. The seven Yellow Jackets receive the honor for a combination of their academic excellence and on-court contributions.

The announcement marks the most honorees for the White and Gold in a single season since 2011’s White and Gold earned eight nods. Kauf highlighted the squad with her third such selection while the remaining six Jackets were recognized for the first time in their careers.

Each student-athlete named to the All-ACC Academic Softball Team has maintained a career GPA of 3.0 or higher and posted a 3.0 GPA or higher in the most recent semester. Along with each honoree’s academic achievements, athletic contributions played a role in each selection as all five position players participated in at least 50% of the team’s games while both pitchers appeared in a minimum of 20% of the contests throughout the 2023 season.

Allen brought an explosive bat through the season, adding pop to the lineup with a team-leading 13 home runs to finish eighth in the league along with 35 RBI on the year. Launching dingers for three straight days in the ACC/B1G Challenge early in the season, the slugger continued to make her presence felt with a walk-off home run for a 7-6 victory over Penn State and more round trippers against Tech’s toughest competition, including previous No. 5 Clemson, then No. 7 Florida State and former No. 10 Duke. Her bombs against the latter two foes gave the White and Gold a late lead against the top-10 opponents, while her blast against the former secured the most runs the Tigers had surrendered on the season at the time. As a result, challengers pitched around Allen as she ranked third in the ACC in walks per game (0.65). Allen concluded her junior season with 31 hits and five doubles as she slugged .564 with a .389 on-base percentage.

Black was another source of power for the White and Gold, tying for second on the squad with seven dingers on the year after coming into the season with just three over her career. The Cumming, Ga., native’s highlight of the season came at Georgia State as she blasted two home runs, including her first career grand slam, for a seasonal team-high of five RBI. Black finished second on the team with eight multi-RBI games by the season’s end, also notably turning in a 2-for-3 outing with a triple in Tech’s ranked win over then No. 18 Auburn.

Dennis turned in another solid year in the circle, leading the Jacket pitching staff with 13 wins to land amongst the top 10 in the ACC. The right hander burst out of the gates to open the year, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout with eight punchouts against Saint Francis. Ranking fifth in the league with three saves, the Suwanee, Ga., native went on to eclipse 100 strikeouts on the year, sitting down 111 batters through 130.1 innings of work for five complete games and a 4.03 ERA by the year’s end. Dennis put together multiple strong outings in 2023, going 2-0 with 10 strikeouts and no runs allowed in the I-75 Tournament, fanning a season-high tying eight batters in three separate appearances and putting away previously No. 18 Auburn for the win in Georgia Tech’s lone ranked victory of the season.

Dobbins burst onto the scene in the early goings of her sophomore season, exploding for five doubles in a three-game span during the Queen City Classic. The Dacula, Ga., native went on to finish second on the squad in batting average (.336), hits (39), doubles (8) and triples (2) for the year. Dobbins had no trouble reaching base through the season, also averaging a .406 on-base percentage and a .517 slugging percentage, swiping 12 bags after getting on. Her sneaky power came through in the crucial Pitt series, going yard twice in a game two victory. Dobbins put together a flawless night at the plate this season as well, going 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBI against UNI.

A mainstay in the Tech’s outfield, Edgmon put together a solid sophomore campaign as she most notably finished seventh in the ACC in steals per game with 18 on the year. Overall, the Dunlap, Tenn., native finished with 26 hits, five doubles and a dinger for 12 RBI at the plate for a .306 average. Edgmon exploded in a vital series at Pitt, landing ninth on the SportsCenter Top 10 for a diving catch and batting .556 through the series. The outfielder went 5-for-9 with a crucial two-RBI double

that sparked a seven-run rally and what proved to be the game-winning solo shot in the top of the 10th in game two against the Panthers.

Kauf tallies yet another award for her decorated season as she’s already been named CSC Academic All-District, All-ACC Second Team and to the ACC All-Tournament Team this year. The lauded Jacket batted .500 in the ACC tournament as she went 4-for-8 with a pair of RBI, leading Georgia Tech to the quarterfinals and an upset of host Notre Dame. Living up to her lofty expectations as a preseason top-10 catcher and top-100 player by D1Softball (No. 8/85) and Extra Inning Softball (No. 10/81), Kauf finished top 10 in the conference in triples per game (third), doubles per game (sixth) and runs per game (seventh). The steady presence led the Jacket bats in nearly every category through the year, fronting the squad by batting .354 with 56 hits, 14 doubles and four triples while slugging .627 with a .446 on-base percentage. Kauf also went yard seven times this season to rack up 33 RBI. Kauf’s team-best tears this season included a seven-game hitting streak and a 13-game stretch of reaching base.

Neleman concluded the 2023 season among the White and Gold’s greats, owning the second most career strikeouts in program history with 561 as she’s also in the top 10 in the Tech record books with six career saves. Owning eight complete games and a pair of shutouts on the year, the senior hurler ranked fifth in the conference in strikeouts with 153. Amongst the ACC, Neleman also landed in the top 10 in hits allowed per seven innings (5.57) and innings pitched (147). The Marietta, Ga., native posted a team-best 3.95 ERA on the season, allowing a .214 opponent batting average. Highlights throughout the season for Neleman included a career-high tying 13 strikeouts against UConn, a 1.45 ERA with 15 strikeouts in the I-75 Tournament, seven punchouts in 6.2 innings pitched against then No. 18 Auburn, a complete-game shutout with two hits allowed against Kennesaw State, a 2-0 record and a 1.11 ERA against Boston College including a one-hitter, and another complete-game shutout against Jacksonville State.

Offense/Defense

I know we kinda jinx the offense last year by having this convo, but I’m kinda bored! My two brothers and my dad kinda won’t talk about it!

Offense, with all the weapons we have, competent QB’s, who ever is the starter( cough cough) Pyron. He has unbelievable talent all around him. Including the OL 👀😍! I have mentioned a couple times I believe we can average 30+ points a game! The only reason I say that is because from what I saw from the spring game! Thought on you all.

Defense, we lost three big pieces to our defense, will they hurt the defense(not sure they will). Jason Moore just got on scholarship( congrats buddy you deserve it) the whole entire DL has so much potential it’s not even funny. LB core is my biggest issue but glad we added more depth. Tyson, Brian, Paula( is that how you spell his name) ?, Tatum and I keep forgetting the other kid that transferred to us.

I’d love all of you to give me feedback but if you all don’t want to. Please lock the tread.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING OV Weekend No. 4 Buzz

Good morning from the city of Atlanta, home of roaches, humidity, and traffic.

Some more than others.

The final official visit weekend of June is set to conclude today, and from the looks of it, there’s a good chance I will be able to talk with each of the visitors before they leave today.

Something else to note is that today is the final day before the dead period, meaning that there could be some unofficial visitors who stop by at some point today.

After talking with sources close to the recruitment of high three-star OL Favour Edwin, it sounds like his recruitment is kind of at a standstill.

Edwin is yet to play a game, but has impressed at camps and shown a good amount of upside. He is just very raw. NFL-caliber frame and upside, but he is very raw.

GT could get more heavily involved if they choose to, but from my conversations, I expect them to wait it out and see some film (and development) before making a move.

There’s also a chance the OL class could be full between now and then as well.

More to come.

HOOPS Another non-conference game for 2023-24

I missed this during the camp season but GT will play Penn State in the Hoopsgiving Event on Dec 17 in State Farm Arena.

GT already has the Diamond Head Classic matchup with the following teams in that tournament: Hawaii, Nevada, ODU, TCU, Temple, UMass, Portland, Dec 21, 22 and 24.

UGA game whenever that is and a game against an SEC team from the bottom half of the league for the ACC/SEC Challenge likely from the following, Arkansas, MIss State, SC, Ole Miss or LSU.

Q's Take Sponsored by Inteleca: Key's Plan has GT in the Rivals top 25

Thanks to our new sponsor Inteleca for helping bring back Q's Take my weekly look at things around GT and college sports from my vantage.

GA Tech 2 660x165.jpg

I've had the pleasure to cover more programs that probably a lot of you all realize in various capacities during my time at Rivals from starting with the madhouse to the East and moving South to the Gators and LSU and around the time I started up on the GT site to Cincinnati, South Florida, Wake Forest and Alabama plus connections to hundreds of coaches along the way. There are two traits I've found in the majority of the successful coaches I've covered or worked with over the years and the lack of this trait is often a telltale sign that a program is going to fail under a new coach, a detailed and executable plan of action.

I've seen spectacular failures like GC3 here or Jeff Scott at USF and guys past their prime chasing a retirement fund like Tommy Tuberville or Charlie Strong, but the ones who seem to last have a plan, are detailed and it is one that can be accomplished with the resources available. Collins sort of had a plan, but it was like most things he did, sort of a permeable and ever-changing blob of concepts. Jeff Scott had no plan, no idea what the heck he was doing, and looked like if they pulled a random fan off a sideline and asked him to be a football coach. Jeff is a tremendous person, but he and Scottie Montgomery (ECU) may be the two worst coaching hires of the last decade-plus of CFB. Two guys who were good recruiters to a point and that was about it. I'm still unpacking GC3 to be honest. What he said and did often differed greatly and what he said made sense and what he often did, did not.

Willie Taggart was another guy with no plan. He stumbled into a generational talent who was basically just short of that school's Joe Hamilton in Quinton Flowers and started him after his staff threatened a revolt if he started Steven Bench over Flowers. He rode Flowers into the Oregon job and then to FSU and then FAU and back onto the Harbaugh's coattails in Baltimore with John Harbaugh.

On the flip side, say what you want about Paul Johnson, but he had a plan and knew what he wanted to do and what he was looking for with kids and it mostly worked with some tremendous highs and other than an injury-riddled 2015 season the lows were not horrible. Even that team was more competitive than the first three years under Collins despite massive injuries. CPJ was a master of his offense and he ran a pretty solid ship that took on water after losing key assistants and dodging obstacles from the administration both financially and in the other category like the old drug policy that wiped out almost half of one of his signing classes in later times.

I saw the same thing with Mark Richt down the road, he had a plan mostly copying what Bobby Bowden did at FSU mixed with some Miami stuff, but it was still a plan and it worked. That plan also was helped by being able to attract top talent.

Nick Saban has a plan. Really everyone people hold in high regard minus a few outliers like Lane Kiffin who runs more of a loose program leaning on the portal these days has a pretty detailed oriented plan.

I spent the previous weekend down with the guy I had just behind Brent Key as my top target for GT in their coaching search Alex Golesh. What I saw was a very organized and detailed organization with very clearly set job functions and a relatable staff that had good energy and could recruit. The Bulls landed their first four-star player in several years this weekend in Zavier Hamilton because of Golesh and his staff.

Now you are probably like Kelly I don't give a crap about these people, what are you going on about? The point is for the first time since probably 2016 I see a very clear vision and a detailed plan that is achievable under Key here. I think he has hired a very strong staff and they are getting the right kids to visit and if they get the NIL support they need they have a chance to build something more sustainable I think in the future. Key knows how everything works here and he can positively and negatively recruit almost any school in the country based on his own knowledge and history dealing with everyone GT recruits against.

What Key needs now is proof of concept and financial support via NIL. I think if he gets those two things the ceiling moves up for GT football with him.

GT scratched the top 25 today in the Rivals Recruiting Rankings mostly due to the sheer size of the class at the moment, but the quality pieces are in place and if Key can keep them, I think the future is very bright for GT football especially if people open up their wallets and support what he is doing.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Expected visitors for this weekend..

Will update as more names trickle in.. rivals rating listed beside each name rather than profile cards to save your bandwidth:

Tucker (Ga.) DE Christopher Jackson - 5.8
Bay City (Tex.) DL Carlon Jones - 5.7
Thompson (Ala.) S Kaleb Harris - 5.7
Theodore (Ala.) LB Bobby Pruitt - 5.7
Mill Creek (Ga.) DB Trajen Greco - 5.6
Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips S Jashad Presley - 5.6
Aiken (S.C.) Silver Bluff DE Jordan Boyd - 5.6
Bibb County (Ala.) DE Trashun Griffin - 5.5

Hearing there is a strong possibility of an LB committed elsewhere making a trip to Atlanta this weekend as well, but I am not in a place to reveal any other info at this time.

GT Golfer Lamprecht @ British Amateur

Lamprecht is currently playing in the British Amateur Championship. After several rounds of stroke play and 5 match play wins, he is currently playing a 36 hole match in the finals. He leads 2 up after 18 holes.

2 GT Golfers have won this championship - Bobby Jones and Charlie Yates.

Key and Saban

Personally, I feel like this is what the installation of culture that is currently going on at Tech is reflecting, along with GOL principles that were simply talked about by the previous coach but were never taken seriously. What say you?
