Jackets Honored at Peach of an Athlete Role Model Banquet

Georgia Tech’s Bella D’Amico, Dylan Leonard and Camille Trotman recognized

ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia Tech’s Bella D’Amico(volleyball), Dylan Leonard (football) and Camille Trotman (track and field) were recognized for their achievements on the playing surface and in the community on Monday night, being named 2024 Peach of an Athlete Role Models. The distinguished honors are given by the Atlanta Area Council and Boy Scouts of America.

At the 40th annual banquet held at Truist Park, D’Amico and Leonard were recognized amongst the eight amateur collegiate honorees, while Trotman received the Top Female Athlete Award, the highest honor given.

Each year, the Atlanta Area Council and Boy Scouts of America honor student-athletes from the state of Georgia or a college or university in Georgia, who have distinguished themselves by their character, scholastic achievement, academic excellence and community service – characteristics taught every day in the Scouting program. Every year, 10 collegiate student-athletes are recognized as nominees for the award with two receiving the highest honor of Top Female Athlete and Top Male Athlete.

Trotman has been a servant leader on the campus and in the community, while competing on Georgia Tech’s track and field team. The Smyrna, Ga., native has competed in over 30 meets, mainly in high jump, and placed 10th in the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a personal-best mark. Off the track, Trotman has been heavily involved in the community as a member of the NAACP and Georgia Tech’s Student Government Association. Recently named one of Tech’s recipients of the ACC Postgraduate Scholarships, Trotman plans to pursue law school after graduation.

D’Amico has helped Georgia Tech volleyball to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2020-22) since her arrival on The Flats. A 2023 team captain, D’Amico eclipsed the 1,000 mark for the first time in a single season as Tech’s lead setter in 2022 and earned all-ACC second team honors. A strong student-athlete, D’Amico was a 2022 CSC Academic All-District honoree, as well as earning places on the All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Honor Roll. Off the court, the Yellow Jacket has contributed her time to several initiatives including the Boys and Girls Club of Tampa Bay Committee, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Warm Westerville Food Shelter.

A native of Milton, Ga., Leonard was selected as one of 20 semifinalists for the 2023 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award in October. Leonard arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 2019 and earned a scholarship after appearing in all 12 games as a true freshman. One of the team’s unquestioned leaders, Leonard has served as a game captain on multiple occasions. In the classroom, Leonard was a Campbell Trophy semifinalist, a member of the National Football Foundation Hampshire Society, an ACC all-academic team selection and a four-time ACC academic honor roll member. In the community, Leonard has been involved in numerous community service efforts, including visiting patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

THE WAR ROOM: Football Edition Sponsored by Inteleca

Thanks to our friends at Inteleca for bringing you the WAR ROOM this time in lieu of a Q's Take today.

GA Tech Large Ad copy-660x150-px.gif

So I figured with spring football about to start again this is a good time for some scoop on the football team. Remember what is said in the WAR ROOM stays on this site and off social media or whatever else you crazy kids use to share information.

Spring ball is going well for GT and things are very organized and running smoothly for Brent Key and his staff. Overall the new defensive coaches have been impressive both to observers and within the program with how they are teaching and demanding the most from their positions groups every day particularly the trio of Santucci, Pope and Simpson coaching the LBs, OLBs/Rush and DLs.

I'll start on the defensive side because that is the big key. Santucci wants to build depth. GT had some of the highest snap percentages in the country a year ago especially on the DL and at LB and those are spots where you kill effectiveness as the snaps go up. Building depth and finding a solid rotation is the goal on that side of the ball and even in the secondary for the Jackets. They want to be able to roll guys and not have the giant falloff they had when they had to go to the bench at times.

Defensive Line: Jess Simpson's attention to detail and work with the DL is impressive and it is clearly why he was in the NFL and why he has a strong rep as a DL coach in most circles. They are going to play with a true NT a lot and then a 3-tech DT and a big defensive end as the core of the three-man DL and then you'll have that rush OLB/edge spot to round out the DL in most situations. Santucci explained all of this in his presser, but sometimes people miss things.

Zeek Biggers looks great, he is trim and quicker out there and his stamina continues to improve. That was the big knock on him playing on the defensive side out of HS and that is what can take him to the next level along with being more productive. Horace Lockett is huge now in a good way and he should be able to improve his role on that side of the ball. Shymeik Jones is battling an injury per my sources but they are excited about him and Makius Scott proved his versatility last year playing end and DT often in the same game and he should benefit from a more focused role. The FSU transfer Ayo Tifase gives them a more twitchy guy who can play the 3-tech as well or slide outside when you want to size up.

I would not be shocked to see them go after another DT-body in the portal in the offseason. They will add Landen Marshall in the summer, but they are still down one body at that spot from the ideal number.

Out to the end spot, Sylvain Yondjouen has made tremendous progress and he still looks like a freak. If he can stay healthy he will be like adding a big-time transfer at that position. Eddie Kelly continues to improve and the reps he got last year should pay some dividends this fall. Jack Barton is a nice piece of the puzzle, will be the guy? Probably not, but he is a solid DE, he can play both DE spots and probably better than some of the depth pieces they've had in the past. Josh Robinson remains an interesting guy for me. I expected he would leave in the offseason and he decided to come back. He is a little slow and that hurts him at times at least in the old scheme, but he has a decent nose for the ball.

At the rush spot, the spotlight is on Kevin Harris now with Kyle Kennard and Noah Collins both gone. Barton, Harris and newcomer Jordan Boyd is an absolute freak physically, but he is raw and needs a lot of coaching. I would not be shocked if they continued to recruit this spot in the portal. I think this is the biggest question mark on the defense. Do they move other guys around? Can they get an impact player to help shoulder some of the load?

Linebacker was the biggest concern I had going into spring ball when looking at the GT defense, but Santucci apparently is comfortable with what he has to work with per my sources. Kyle Efford is a meat-and-potatoes LB so if you are smart you can scheme for him to be one of your LBs and he will be fine. Tren Tatum is getting pushed to be the best version of himself he can be. He still has tons of potential but has to stay focused and play smart. That remains his biggest obstacle. Jackson Hamilton, they are excited about and he looks the part and runs well. EJ Lightsey when healthy should be a solid piece as well and then Tah'j Butler has tremendous upside. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the younger guys like Ashley and Cruz as they seemed to be in the doghouse under Kevin Sherrer but it is a clean slate with Santucci and both have great length. I still wonder if Cruz doesn't get a look at rush.

The secondary is getting sorted out. The safety spots and even nickel probably have a pretty solid grouping of guys with LaMiles Brooks, Clayton Powell-Lee, Taye Seymore and Omar Daniels at the top end of that group. Newbie Warren Burrell can play both nickel and corner and Syeed Gibbs can play slot corner and CB so he is an interesting pickup. D.J. Moore has been playing some safety and turning heads as well. They need to see solid development from Ahmari Harvey and Rodney Shelley who both flashed last year, especially Harvey. How that group develops could determine whether they target one more DB in the portal or not post-spring.

On the offensive side, the QB situation is pretty clear cut at the moment, Haynes King is QB1, Zach Pyron is QB2 and Brody Rhodes is QB3 then there is a huge dropoff before you get to the two freshmen. Graham Knowles is raw and Aaron Philo is drinking from the firehose as CPJ liked to say as is Knowles. That is totally normal and they would like to redshirt both QBs and hopefully, they won't need either to play this fall. King has really stepped up his leadership on the team and Pyron has improved his arm strength and touch on deep balls so both continue to develop. Having seen three of the four QBs in HS it is interesting to see how things changed over time when they got on campus and the learning curve adjustments including the one Pyron had as a true freshman.

At RB, Jamal Haynes is the guy. The question is who will be #2. They really like the two freshmen Anthony Carrie who has tremendous hands out of the backfield and my sources are really high on Trelain Maddox who is out with the HS knee injury right now, but apparently is a really hard worker. Trey Cooley is a known quantity, Evan Dickens is also sort of a known quantity, both are solid but not spectacular replacements for Dontae Smith. The X-factor guy is Jamie Felix and whether you get something out of him. That'll be a key question this spring as well.

The receiver position is pretty solid at the top, you have Leo Blackburn, Eric Singleton Jr., Malik Rutherford and Chase Lane. Then Christian Leary, Abdul Janneh and Avery Boyd have all shown flashes. But really the top four are the expected core. Isiah Canion's shoulder injury is a bummer, but they are excited about him and Trey Horne. The guys who need to step up now are Janneh, Boyd, James BlackStrain and Bailey Stockton who could carve out roles for themselves for the fall. My sources feel better about the WRs than I did so that is encouraging.

At TE, it has been a little bit of a MASH situation in that room with some injuries so Jackson Long and Ryland Goede are getting plenty of work. Brett Seither seems like a guy who they will have to monitor his practice reps with his back situation and they feel good about Jackson Hawes as well who was a little banged up. Overall the expectations for this room are solid per my sources.

And upfront Geep Wade has been busy trying to build out his depth and this could be the deepest OL at GT in forever on paper if they stay healthy. You have the core four starters back (Robinson, Fusile, Franklin and Williams) plus Keylan Rutledge who is getting close to coming back and is walking again coming off his car accident per my sources. With him out, Ben Galloway is getting a ton of work with the ones per sources this spring and he really came on at the end of the season to jump into the two-deep. Ethan Mackenny is learning both tackle spots with an eye toward the future for him and they are even crosstraining guys like Gabe Fortson at guard to help develop more depth. The tackles look a helluva lot bigger with Jordan Floyd and Patrick Screws along with Mackenny coming up in the wings. Knock on wood, but this should be a very solid group.

Specialist-wise, we will talk to Ricky Brumfield on Monday so hopefully there will be more of an update then. Spring isn't a huge time for news on special teams so I don't really have much to offer other than they finally have an adequate amount of options at kicker and punter and snapper for the first time in a while.

GT could add anywhere from 3-5 players in the spring portal period depending on attrition, needs, and injuries. That is a pretty normal number and there is a lot of optimism about the upcoming season from sources on the Flats. Is this a 10-win team? Probably not, but the bar isn't crazy high to get to Charlotte either. Offensively cutting down on turnovers and improving on sustained drives and defensively being even just 25-30% better would probably get GT into the mix for an 8-win type season and a potential trip to Charlotte but there is a lot of work that needs to be done between now and kickoff in Ireland to position the Jackets to make those improvements. It starts back up tomorrow morning.

FOOTBALL Practice Notes and Quotes 3/25

Georgia Tech returned to the practice field after a 10-day layoff for spring break Monday. After practice, newly minted associate head coach Ricky Brumfield spoke to the media about his specialists as well as his new duties as the Jackets cornerbacks coach. Brumfield had been helping with the defensive backs in the past, but adding the cornerback position as a full-time gig and associate head coaching duties adds more things for him to do in addition to being the special teams coordinator for the Jackets.

"Obviously with the corners and special teams and everything else, I've added a little more on the plate, but last year I was helping out as well with the corners and the nickels so it was a smooth transition," Brumfield said.

Adding the associate head coach title was a big sign of faith from head coach Brent Key in Brumfield as well in addition to bumping up his role on staff to corners coach.

"It meant a lot. I didn't know (coach Key) coming in and I worked hard for him and him seeing that, it was honestly an honor to get that. My future goal is I want to be a head coach wherever that is. That will allow me to help with that process. Him doing that, I'm very appreciative of it and grateful of it and I am not taking it lightly," Brumfield said. "I'm doing everything I can to learn as much as I can from him and help him out as well. I told him, 'Coach I want to take some things off your plate. I don't just want a title and just be here, I want to take some things off your plate.' Obviously, that will help my career in the future as well."

Brumfield said having his core four guys back for 2024, Aidan Birr at PK, Gavin Stewart at KO, David Shanahan at P/Holder and Henry Freer at LS is big. Last year they spent a lot of time just teaching them how to do a certain drill or the why and how things translate to the game and now they are able to refine more and add some stuff they couldn't do a year ago like more rugby punts or how they line up for FGs and it is just a lot smoother overall and the players have bought in more.

I asked Brumfield about Warren Burrell and Syeed Gibbs to get his take on each.

On Burrell, he said that he really wants to be coached hard and specific with his technique. Burrell tells Brumfield to stay on him and he is a pleasure to coach. He never gets too down or too high and he wants to be perfect out there, but he knows that isn't possible but keeps pushing towards that goal and he thinks he will be a really good player for them this year.

On Gibbs, he is different than Burrell who likes to smile, laugh or joke a little, Gibbs is very serious and he likes to get extra time working on his craft and he is a perfectionist as well. He goes about his business in a different way than Burrell but they both want to be great.

Brumfield said that the biggest area of work is kickoff both coverage and kick return as both dropped off as the season went along. They did jump from 131 to 42 in the country and there was major improvement overall on special teams but there is still work to do because they didn't score a touchdown on KR or PR. They did have four blocked kicks but they need to be able to change field position better in the return game and score touchdowns. He said they also had too many missed tackles. He said kickoff was their worst phase last year and they are doing a lot of extra work on that this spring with drills.

I asked about the return game and he said they have Christian Leary back at KR and Jamal Haynes who both handled the duties last year plus some other guys they want to look at. Rodney Shelley was the backup PR last year and got a chance in the SC State game and the bowl game when Dom Blaylock was out and he is more of a home run threat than Dom was because he has more wiggle, but Dom was very consistent catching the ball and getting more yards than you would expect in the space he was operating in. Dom could get 10-12 yards, but he wasn't going to break one. Rodney is more of a breakaway guy back there, but he has to be more consistent catching and fielding the ball. He said they are looking at Christian Leary, Eric Singleton, and Jamal Haynes on PRs as well. He is looking for consistency there.

I asked him how he decides on the holder and why he uses a punter and he gave a great answer.

"I love the punters holding because those guys work together all day long. I've had it before where the QB was the holder and they could care less about holding and they come over with their chin strap unstrapped and they get about five snaps and say hey coach I'm good. I want chemistry and I want trust in the holder and snapper."

He said the amount of reps and the work they get in builds that trust in the operation on the FG/PAT and that it also helps the punter because he is always catching the ball anyway. He also said how many fake FGs are you going to try in a season, one maybe two so there isn't a huge point in using the backup QB.

David Shanahan was up next and he said that it is getting closer to playing in Ireland but they still have a long way to go before that game kicks off with spring ball, summer workouts and fall camp, but he said people are excited about the game and they went over in July around July 4th with a group and they went to his hometown and stuff like that and that was a lot of fun to do.

Shanahan noted this will be the first time he has had the same position coach for back-to-back seasons at GT and he thinks that should help him with consistency and knowing what to expect and they are able to work on more detailed things like directional punts or different types of kicks because of that.

Shanahan said the team got to sample some Irish snacks and Jordan Williams really liked them and they were a hit with the team. He joked that a couple of his teammates asked him how to get a passport and he thought it was funny given he doesn't have an American passport and would have no clue how that works.

Shanahan said he is working on nailing down his process and gave the example of pro-style punts and his steps. He said he varies between 2, 2.5 and 3 steps and he should be hitting it on two every time. He has to be more confident in that process and that is the biggest thing he is focusing on.

Next up was Henry Freer the long snapper and he was put on scholarship before spring break for his SR season. He said getting put on scholarship meant everything to him and this is his sixth year here and when he got to GT he had no idea he would even play football at all before he got a call asking him to tryout in the summer. He showed up at camp and then the next year he got to travel and the year after that he got in a couple of games and then he just played a little more and then a little more and it has been a cool journey for him.

Freer said having Brumfield back is huge for them because they aren't stuck trying to figure out a new system again and different calls like the previous regime.

Freer said he is focused on improving his coverage skills on punts, he said his teammates rag on him about it and he needs to get more tackles.

Freer said he feels like GT is on the rise and trending up now under Coach Key and they are starting to do the right things to build it up.

Last we spoke to Aidan Birr and I asked him why he switched from 93 to 33 and he said his kicking coach back home Jade Oberkrom wore #33 in college and when coach Key asked him in December if he wanted a different number he said yeah, 33. He likes the number and it is the most 3s you can have on a jersey.

Birr said he has been very focused on the kicking operation with Freer and Shanahan and improving that and also improving his kickoffs and leg speed.

Birr got a little emotional when I asked him about his tough road to playing with his ACL injury, he said that he had appendicitis that ended his HS senior season early and then tore his ACL and he wasn't sure if GT would honor his scholarship or not and they stuck with him so when a year after that he got on the field against SC State for the first time it was a great feeling and he knows that GT really cares about the players.

Birr wants to break the 55-yard field-goal record at GT.

I asked him about following in Harrison Butker's footsteps and he said that is a huge motivation and he watches him kick in the summer here and said it sounds like a sledgehammer hitting the ball when Butker kicks it. He said he doesn't go bother him or anything, just watches what he does and that Butker is a very nice guy.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING The latest on in-state LB Luke Metz

Full story to come this evening, but Metz was being heavily recruited by new DC Tyler Santucci at Duke.

His relationship with Santucci is at a level where Metz was watching closely to see where he would end up, and kept in touch with him throughout the interview process.

Metz is fired up about his new offer from Georgia Tech, and plans to be a regular on The Flats during spring football and beyond.

“I’ll be over there all the time,” exclaimed Metz.

Santucci gave him the news on FaceTime.

Metz mentioned that six NFL teams were showing significant interest in Santucci, and that the combination of Key’s vision and the chance to work with Jess Simpson played a big role.

Metz has visits coming up to GT, LSU, UGA, Ole Miss, and Duke after the dead period ends.

Fascinating Rolling Stone article on the future of college sports.

Frankly, I don't know what the think after reading this article. Except sad, definitely sad.

It sounds like I need to have a long deep think about continuing to support college sports.

Anyway, an interesting read to those of us who have loved college sports more than any other type of sport.

OT: Tech Man Joy

Though our recruiting hasn’t started the way many have wanted, i do take pleasure in seeing seeing Eric Henderson cut UGA off at the knees

Flipped 5star Justus Terry and currently lead to land DL Isaiah Gibson. I know, i know… i would rather have them in white and gold, but it does makes me chuckle seeing a Tech Man wreck shop a bit on UGA

FOOTBALL Georgia HS Coaches Thoughts on Key

An article was posted in The Athletic this morning about which schools recruit Atlanta the best. They talked to several anonymous Georgia HS coaches and got their responses to various questions. I wanted to post an excerpt specifically from the section about Brent Key since it contains some encouraging opinions (and an attack towards Collins), but mods feel free to remove the post if it violates site rules.

What changes have you seen from Georgia Tech since Brent Key took over?

Coach 1: Their communication is off the charts. We have good relationships on their staff. They’ve hired a lot of people with high school connections here. I know their coach got a helicopter this year and was doing the same thing Kirby (Smart) was. That goes a long way with the kids.

Coach 4: He seems like a really, really good, locked-in, hard-nosed type of coach. From a couple times I’ve met him, he’s been really, really polite and welcoming, and I think he’ll probably do as well as you can do there.

Coach 5: Very aggressive in the high schools. He’s done an outstanding job of hiring at least three retired high school guys in their department to be able to say, “What do the high school coaches look for?” They’ve done a great job of getting in touch with that. They communicate well.

There’s nothing more frustrating as a high school coach than hearing your kid has an offer and you haven’t heard one time from a coach at that school. I’m always like, “Are you freakin’ kidding me? You’re about to offer a quarter- to a half-million dollar scholarship to a kid and you haven’t found out if he’s a green light in terms of character, how he is in the weight room, what kind of teammate he is, all those things?”

Coach 6: More communication for sure. More of a welcoming vibe, more of an open door. More of a genuine vibe. A lot of these guys come in like used car salesmen and treat you like you’re the most special coach in the world, introduce themselves, say what’s up and all that, and you see them a week later, and they don’t even know your name. Brent Key and his staff are the complete opposite, as genuine and welcoming as can be. They take the time to get to know you, your program and make you feel at home.

We (once) went to a 7-on-7 at Georgia Tech, and our quarterback at the time was committed to (a rival school), and (a former coach) went up to him before a game and said, “Looking forward to you running around out there. Can’t wait to see how many interceptions you have (on defense).” The kid was like, “Coach, I’m a quarterback.”

That just blew my mind. We had a loaded team and had a quarterback with an offer from Georgia Tech that is not far down the road and committed to (a rival program), and you don’t even know who he is or what position he plays. That explains everything.

Coach 7: Georgia Tech has done a pretty good job even with (former coach) Geoff Collins. They’ve done a good job of being there even if I disagreed with their evaluations. They did a good job of being present, and they’ve done a better job since Key has taken over of making sure they’re present at the main schools in Georgia.

Coach 8: I just think the focus is on wanting to recruit Georgia kids, and they put a premium on our opinions on kids, and they truly listen, give good evaluations and follow up. They’re consistently involved in what the high school coaches have going on. Every week I’ll get a call or text from them about recruiting, players they’ve recruited from me, etc.

Coach 9: I think it’s just a genuine connection to the high school coaches. A lot of guys come and get in and get out because they think, “I’m not getting these kids anyways,” but Georgia Tech is like, “We don’t care who we’re competing against, we’re gonna win.” They have everything you’d need to compete, and they’re starting to manage it the right way. They’re going after top-notch kids and doing it with a passion, and I think they’ll get some difference-makers in the next few years.

Bobby Cremins siting at JMU tournament game

I don’t really pay any attention to basketball but since my wife went to JMU I am actually watching their game. They show this older white-haired gentleman and I think “That looks like Cremins.” They mention that it was indeed him and I was wondering why he was at that game. Dug around and found out that his nephew is a JMU assistant. Very cool! Another Tech-JMU connection. Looking like the Dukes are gonna beat Wisconsin so I may be watching a second tournament game Sunday and will have to cheer against the ACC and Duke.

FOOTBALL GT Pro Day Updates

Georgia Tech will hold their Pro Day either in BDS depending on the weather or more likely in the Brock Indoor as the weather already sucks. Starts at 1 pm

Working out will be

TE Luke Benson, WR Dominick Blaylock, DB Jaylon King, TE Dylan Leonard, LB Braelen Oliver, OL Connor Scaglione, DB Myles Sims and RB Dontae Smith.

Jackets Drop WBIT Decision at MSU, 84-47

Tonie Morgan led Georgia Tech with team-high 16 points

STARKVILLE, Miss. Tonie Morgan recorded her seventh-straight double-figure scoring game, but Georgia Tech got off to a slow start and couldn’t overcome Mississippi State in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament, falling 84-47 in Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday.

Shooting struggles plagued the Yellow Jackets in the first half as Georgia Tech saw offensive production from only three different Jackets. Tech was held scoreless for nearly the first six minutes of the game, allowing Mississippi State to build a double-digit lead early. Morgan kept Tech in the game in the first 20 minutes, producing 12 points. Inés Noguero hit the Jackets’ first triple of the game early in the third frame as Kara Dunn chipped in seven points in the period to lead Tech, but the Bulldogs continued to answer every Tech move.

Morgan finished with 16 points on five field goals and a 6-of-7 effort from the free throw line. Dunn followed with 14 points, while Kayla Blackshear added eight and Rusne Augustinaite contributed six points. Morgan also led the Jackets on the glass with six rebounds, while Sydney Johnson dished out a game-high six assists. Cold shooting plagued the Jackets from the start as the team shot 28.8 percent (17-59) from the field.

Morgan capped her sophomore season with 29 double-figure scoring games, eight double-doubles and led Tech with 170 assists. She finished as the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game on average.

Mississippi State was led offensively by four Bulldogs in double-figures. Jasmine Brown-Hagger led the way with 17 points. MSU won the battle on the glass, 44-30, paced by seven rebounds from Jessika Carter. For the game, the Bulldogs shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the field and 13-for-15 from the free throw line.

Tech closed its season with a 17-16 overall record and made its third postseason appearance in five seasons under head coach Nell Fortner. Morgan and Dunn both picked up prestigious recognition, being named second-team all-ACC.
