To our Tech football team's efforts?

Fan superstitions are key. The right or wrong socks account for last minute TD passes caught or dropped. What were you wearing and drinking when Harrison B hammered his 53 yarder through the uprights? It added that vital yard to clear the crossbar. Good job!

Our small group of aging but faithful fans (missed one home game in 39 years) has engaged different rituals and attire over the years. Good juju is elusive. What works great one year totally vaporizes if your coach is named Bill Lewis.

The magical 1990 year was successful not just because of Shawn Jones but rather the steaks we ate after every game at Hal's on Old Ivy. GOL's teams had more good luck than bad, due solely to repeat wearing of "lucky socks" or "lucky shirt". Peer pressure forced curtailment of the "lucky underwear" phase, a shame since its lucky aura was potent.

Group creativity came up with last year's winning superstition: devouring the colors of the enemy.

When playing Pitt or any team with gold/yellow for colors, it's easy. Drink Screwdrivers or Champagne or Scotch or brew of choice.

Also easy is when playing a team like UGA or Miss State or VT when the colors are red or garnett. Devour the enemy via large draughts of bloody marys or red wine or Maker's Mark (OK, a stretch, but not far off and after a few, it just seems right.)

Then come the odd ball Duke (blue) and Tulane (green) games when we fall back on Easter Egg dye to color a small symbolic beer, then revert to a more natural drink for the rest of the essential pre-game task of getting attitude right for the upcoming clash.

This isn't silly and irrational. We know it works. Without four bloody marys and sacred Ross-era jeans now two inches too small in the waist, Butker had no chance.

Got any good superstitions for the good of our Jackets? Together we stand!
