QUARTERBACKS

Not much drama at QB, Justin Thomas runs the ships and makes everyone better. CPJ has been limiting his work in live hitting, but he is focused on his passing and footwork this spring.

Tim Byerly is doing okay, suffering some from the OL struggles in front of him whereas JT can just outrun it.

Matthew Jordan is still learning not quite ready for full game play. He has had an okay spring so far.

Chase Martenson suffering from the same fate as Byerly, not having a lot of time to make plays and guys putting the ball on the ground some around him.

B-BACKS

C.J. Leggett isn't there yet, he remains a work in progress and needs to get tougher more than anything to embrace the level of contact needed at B-back. He has the big play ability though.

Quaide Weimerskirch is swimming up stream still learning what to do.

The whole B-back thing will not be settled until the fall when they have more bodies to work with….

A-BACKS

This group isn't lighting things up either, but some of that may be a lack of urgency.

Clinton Lynch is coming along and Qua Searcy will be VERY GOOD. Dennis Andrews is okay, but he is much better in games than practice for whatever reason.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Ricky Jeune is having a good camp at WR. Mike Summers is okay, but not making the leap up the staff had hoped for from him to become a consistent player like Smelter or even Waller.

Antonio Messick still struggles with his hands, he can block, but he is still very raw and tries hard.

Harland Howell is still learning what to do as well.

I expect that Christian Philpott and Brad Stewart will have a real chance to play. Philpott could end up being a major contributor right away when he gets on campus.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The competition at all the offensive line spots remains wide open except for center.

Freddie Burden is locked in at center, but Nick Brigham has been doing a decent job as a backup center, they could theoretically redshirt Andrew Marshall if Brigham can do a decent job.

At guard, Shamire DeVine's injury has been a major disappointment so far. Bryan Chamberlain is doing okay at left guard and Trey Braun is solid at right guard, but neither did particularly well in the last scrimmage. Gary Brown is still coming along. Jake Whitley is not in the rotation at guard, still has a ways to go before he will be.

At tackle, Eason Fromayan is fairly settled in at left tackle and Errin Joe at right. The main competition at tackle is for backup spots between Trey Klock, Jake Stickler, Michael Preddy and Will Bryan. Chris Griffin's injury has been planned for in all the shuffling and they won't be moving anyone around.

DEFENSIVE ENDS

KeShun Freeman is locked in at one end and has had a great camp. Antonio Simmons, Rod Rook-Chungong, Tyler Merriweather and Kenderius Whitehead are all doing well in camp and showing some flashes of different skills.

The staff are preparing guys like Simmons and Whitehead to be situational pass rushers on 3rd downs.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES

Currently the defensive tackle position is in the opposite position of last year.

Adam Gotsis and Jabari Hunt-Days are a formidable duo only comparable to Vance Walker and Darryl Richard during the CPJ era at DT. The big plus is having Pat Gamble, Francis Kallon and Kyle Henderson all coming on strong behind them. Kallon has been one of the nice surprises of camp and Henderson will be in better shape soon and should be able to contribute if needed.

LINEBACKERS

P.J. Davis is the anchor for the linebackers and continues to impress. Tyler Marcordes has had a good camp though he got dinged in the last couple of days.

The really interesting competition has been at MIKE linebacker between Anthony Harrell and Beau Hankins. Hankins is more athletic and Harrell is more of a traditional inside linebacker type. I expect both to play this fall.

Backup LB wise, Terrell Lewis has had a strong camp behind Marcordes at SAM and the staff is pretty comfortable with Domonique Noble behind Davis at WILL.

When they go nickel, Marcordes and Davis will start with Harrell and Hankins backing them up, just FYI.

CORNERBACKS

D.J. White and Chris Milton are locked in at corner. Step Durham is doing well at corner and Lynn Griffin is very solid at both corner and nickel. Zach Allen is useful as a reserve as well, but there will be an opportunity for at least one of the incoming freshmen to contribute at corner.

SAFETIES

Again locked in at the top with Demond Smith and Jamal Golden, the big issue is developing backups and long term plans. Corey Griffin is out for the spring and he can step into either the free or strong safety role when he returns. Shaun Kagawa is making a great push at strong safety and Lance and Lawrence Austin are cross trained at both safety and nickel.

It will be interesting to see what A.J. Gray does when he gets on campus, he could play as a true freshman.

SPECIAL TEAMS

I'll have an update on this group after practice today.

RECRUITING

QB

TaDarryl Marshall remains seriously interested in Georgia Tech. Jaylend Ratliffe already counts as part of the 2016 class as well.

BB

The staff is really focused on Dedrick Mills who is the main priority target. Brittain Brown would pop if GT squeezed him or Malik Staples who would be more interested if GT pushed hard.

AB

GT is done for now with Xavier Gantt but they could go get Trey Sneed (Rutgers commit), Jaquarius Bargnare or Bilal Ally if they wanted to.

WR

GT is not really pushing hard for any of the current offer guys at WR right now. They want to get some guys into camp in June.

OL

Jack DeFoor is visiting today and remains seriously interested in GT. Luke Elder has some interest in GT, but is more focused on SEC schools right now. I expect more offers to come on the OL in camp.

DT

Michail Carter is in good shape with GT and Kobe Smith is pretty interested as well. Julian Rochester is a UGA lean now. GT wants two DTs

DE

Tomon Fox remains pretty interested, GT is only taking one defensive end in this class.

LB

Jakob Brashear locks up one of the two spots, Emanuel Bridges and Jonathan Jones are the other two LBs options that are looking seriously at GT.

CB

At corner no one is really sticking out at this point in regards to GT. Robbie Robinson is pretty seriously interested, but he has a lot of pressure to stay home. I expect so more offers to pop up while the staff is on the road.

S

Jordan Mack would commit if GT pushed him, I'm not 100% sure they will even take a safety in this class. I think it will depend on what they decide to do with A.J. Gray and Dante Wigley long term.
