I drive to every home game from central Alabama. It is 400 miles roundtrip, about 3 1/2 hours each way. So after a loss I have plenty of time to commiserate. But this time the drive back was strangely serene.

First, my grandson is a sophomore at The Citadel, so I was happy for him. But mostly it was the fact that the team that faced the greatest challenge, that wanted to win the most, that that played with the most intensity, that played with the most discipline, and deserved to win the most, won. Even tho it wasn't my team.

Of course, I still played the what if, and the why did we do that, or not do that, game in my head. My head kept telling me that this was a game we should never have lost, but my heart kept telling me that the most deserving team won. I am at peace with that.

This is probably the greatest victory, and the proudest and happiest day in The Citadel's football history. I am sure they will revel in it for a long time. Good for them. They deserve to.
