ON THE USF GAME LAST YEAR AND SEEING WISCONSIN D AGAINST THEIR O

Wisconsin stopped the run and that is something we need to improve upon. They disrupted the QB and got a pass rush with four-down linemen and got ahead early and attacked. USF is a momentum team and explosive players and talent, got behind early and it really affected them. The way our defense is we have a one game sample with USF and their offense and we have all the film, but you won’t know until you see the play with their personnel.

ON THE PLAY UPFRONT AND CHICO BENNETT

28 players players and Jordan Huff got two snaps at the end and five inside guys and six outside guys at DE, Chico was one of the handful of guys, he made a mistake then had a TFL against guys who are difficult to tackle. When a true freshmen at that stage gets reps that helps their development. He played faster today despite getting a big load today.

ON THE PLAYING FRESHMEN AROUND THE REDSHIRT RULE

Offense it is much easier to feature freshmen players especially on third down, I have to scheme to take away their best plays, we have to complex but not complicated for our guys. We are an effort based defense, we have three seniors playing defensive snaps and that is where we are in the state of the program and every developmental rep is important. USF will go fast in a hot environment and need a lot of guys ready to your point.

ON MYLES SIMS

He played in the second half and had a one-on-one and he was aggressive with it, he looks different out there and he has a long way to go, he held up. He didn’t get the news until we were at the team hotel before the game, as much as you tell the young men to get ready, ineventiably you see a different level of prep, there is no more crutch, just be ready to play. When we get through Thursday we make that decision.

ON JAYTLIN ASKEW

Jaytlin opposite a bunch of guys he has a bunch of reps, he got into that game in that atmosphere he has the experience to play composed, he didn’t get tested and he was solid and what he did on kickoff and punt gunner that adds to our rotation, he is short, but feisty and competitive.

ON JAQUAN HENDERSON

He plays hard and how we identify ourselves he plays hard, he went back to the default of playing hard and effort guys and culture guys, he embodies that and he is an undersized DE and we drop him in the flats and stunt inside on run techniques, every rep he gets better and is extremely coachable.

ON FIGURING OUT WHAT THE D DOES WELL

I think that is the last time we will face the #1 pick in the NFL draft in Trevor Lawrence, not happy not stopping the run, we effected the quarterback and got two interceptions against an elite QB, we played a little safe and deep and we held up on the perimeter other than one time. Having long/press corners and I was happy with how they held up, Tre got the most shine with the pick and the PBU, but we mentioned it we need to be complex but not complicated. We’ve got to be more aggressive in the D.

ON THE USF OFFENSE

Last week we were in a situation where you can’t take away one thing with 11 defenders. #20 is their most dynamic player and Cronkrite is their other best weapon, we will be alert to where they are on offense. Ford was their return specialist and didn’t play and I expect them to play him at RB, jet motions and WR and it was undisclosed to why he didn’t play, he is listed as a slot last year he was a RB, that may tell you something, it will be a spy game.

ON THE LB PLAY

What I saw was guys playing hard and we didn’t see egregious loafs. We had Charlie Thomas and Demetrius Knight playing their first real LB plays, but they created explosives and we went through it and there was 60 plays for 2.9 yards per play, but a sprint draw for a 90-yd run does nothing for stats. It was a leverage issue, that is something we can coach. IT wasn’t a cuss out session, but it was a way to be honest about where we are as a defense and how we can improve those things. There won’t be an opponent as good on those levels as them.

ON THE PASS RUSH AGAINST CLEMSON

It wasn’t that we didn’t attack, but there were not moments we could load the box and rush it, because he would just load up and throw it. We tried to generate with 4-5 man pass rushes and they loaded up 7 blockers, but we affected him with looks and motions. We didn’t get many body blows, once we flushed him, I was impressed with how well Trevor ran and we were getting him off his spot and we weren’t creating negative plays. Wisconsin created a lot of sacks last week and we will take some stuff from that.
