CPJ has a cold and is in a bad mood. No Trey Klock (back), no Jamal Golden (undisclosed), Christian Philpott (shoulder) and a few others all in red.
CPJ said that Andrew Marshall worked RG today with the ones.
CMP said that the DL rotation looks something like this which is a little different than I though:
SDE- Rook-Chungong, Whitehead or Merriweather
NT- Gamble, Hunt-Days, Henderson
DT- Gotsis, Kallon, Glanton
RDE- Freeman, Simmons, Stargel, Saint-Amour
CMP said that Hunt-Days is working the NT position with Gamble and he is still learning how to use his hands and stuff instead of freelancing and that is why Gamble is ahead of him on the depth chart.
CMP said he is really happy with how Anree Saint-Amour has come along and Glanton. Glanton sounds like he will dress if he keeps it up and might in the rotation. Both are strong pass rush guys. Henderson is on the edge of the rotation as well depends on who dresses.
Tyler Stargel is running some second team, but is still knocking the rust off. CMP was not pleased with Whitehead, said he needs to learn what to do technically and not just try stuff.
Rook is the steady one. They will decide in a week or two on if they will redshirt either Simmons or Merriweather as a sophomore.
CTR said that the nickel has been the most contentious position battle in camp and Lynn Griffin and Lawrence Austin are neck and neck.
Jamal Golden is at strong safety and Shaun Kagawa and Jalen Johnson are his backups. Demond Smith is at free safety with Corey Griffin and A.J. Gray behind him. CTR said that A.J. Gray is definitely a ball player.
CTR said the overall depth and talent level on the defense is much higher than when he got here.
CPJ said he is looking for some urgency from the players. Said Mikell Lands-Davis is adjusting to A-back well and is suited to play either.
CPJ joked that if we saw practice we would not be crowning GT as potential champs of anything, said he wants to see more from his players.
Grind of camp kind of getting to everyone. Saturday is the last day of camp then the players move into the dorms after the scrimmage. Saturday may be completely closed even to media because of all the moving stuff on campus creating havoc.
Jabari described his purgatory season last year as being prison-like for him not being able to play. Said he learned a lot about himself and his life and family during that time. Said he gained 30ish pounds between the end of 2013 and the beginning of this year with the move to DT. People forget he was actually played DE in the spring of 2014, CMP said this is the first real DT work he has gotten other than this past spring and it is a different deal than DE, so that is why the learning curve is steep. JHD is 292 right now.
