(Non-GT)Atlanta Braves Baseball....new beginnings

Multiple draft outlets have noted the possibility that the Braves could cut a deal with high school right-hander Ian Anderson at No. 3 overall in tonight’s draft with an eye toward over-spending on the No. 40 selection. ESPN’s Keith Law noted as much in this morning’s final mock draft (subscription required and recommended), and Eric Longenhagen or ESPN and Fangraphs tweets that the team could do so with an eye on getting former No. 1 overall candidate Jason Groome at No. 40, though their willingness to do so is dependent on who comes off the board with the first and second selections. D1Baseball.com’s Frankie Piliere tweeted earlier today that Groome’s asking price is extremely high and connected him to the Braves while adding that he’s in a somewhat of a “freefall” as a result of his price tag. Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com wrote in today’s draft buzz column wrote that Groome has floated an asking price of $4MM, which could cause some teams to shy away from him. Notably, the MLB.com pair also adds that Groome has now committed to Chipola Junior College in Florida after having previously been committed to Vanderbilt. In doing so, Groome would allow himself to be eligible for next year’s draft if he elects not to sign.

25 picks in an no Trammell taken so far. Likely won't be long, but you know Danny Hall is nervously watching every pick. I know I am.

Way to go, ACC:
19) Mets: Justin Dunn, RHP, Boston College: Dunn opened the season as the Boston College closer but moved into the rotation and mid-season and saw his draft stock bolt upward, posting a 1.47 ERA in 60 innings with a 66/16 K/BB. He's been clocked as high as 99 MPH from an athletic 6-2, 170 frame, and shows potential with two breaking balls. Click here for more details.

20) Dodgers: Gavin Lux, SS, Kenosha, Wisconsin: Extremely polished for a cold-weather player, Lux is a left-handed hitter with a fine line drive bat, speed, defense, instincts, and a baseball background as the nephew of Augie Schmidt, number two pick in the 1982 draft. Click here for more details.

21) Blue Jays:T.J. Zeuch, RHP, University of Pittsburgh: He's 6-7, has a plus fastball but mixes it with a potentially solid curve, slider, and change-up; he posted a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts with a 74/19 K/BB in 70 innings; he can be inconsistent but can develop into a mid-rotation starter or a power bullpen arm. Click here for more details.

22) Pirates: Will Craig, 3B, Wake Forest University: A monster bat, Craig hit .392/.537/.766 with 16 homers, 47 walks, and 33 strikeouts in 171 at-bats. He has plate discipline and excellent power; his arm is strong too (he has pitching experience) but may wind up at first base in the long run. Click here for more details.

23) Cardinals: Delvin Perez, SS, Puerto Rico: Rumored for the top ten until testing positive for PEDs this past week, Perez has excellent defensive tools and overall athleticism. His bat is behind the glove but he has a shot to hit eventually; he will need time. Click here for more details.

24) Padres: Hudson Sanchez, SS, Carroll, Texas: A surprise choice, Sanchez was seen as a second round talent until two minutes ago by most sources. He has a long track record of successful hitting but questions about his defense persist; he may end up as an outfielder. The 6-3, 195 pounder is committed to Texas A&M but it is hard to see the Padres picking him unless they were sure he would sign.

Clemson signee, Carter Kieboom, from Walton HS, goes at #28 to the Nationals.

Yay!!! Two more pitchers!!!

I have concluded herewith that the Braves feel they have the worst pitcher evaluation in major league history and thus need to sign every pitcher they can get their hands on in order to locate 5 they can depend on. Or... perhaps they are raising pitchers, like pen-raised quail, to be targets of some other team on the hunt in the future.

What is apparent to me though is they are planning to break out an opening day lineup in 2017 of 9 pitchers, thus setting two records: most pitchers in a starting lineup at one time, and lowest team batting average.

I'm on pins and needles.

Reds on Trammell... http://www.cincinnati.com/story/spo...ielder-taylor-trammell-35th-overall/85679174/

Trammell has already committed to play baseball — not football — at Georgia Tech. That commitment may have caused him to fall to the Reds with the 35th pick. Baseball America had Trammell ranked as the No. 13 player in the draft.

“I think a lot of it had to do with how he got down there,” Buckley said. “He’s going to Georgia Tech, 4.0 student, his family is very educated, engineers. We’ll see how that one goes.”

Last year’s first-round pick, Tyler Stephenson, had also committed to Georgia Tech before signing with the Reds.

44) Braves: Kyle Muller, LHP, Dallas, Texas: Throws hard and also a prospect as a power hitter with speed; huge potential here, could be a real steal; University of Texas commit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
76) Braves: Brett Cumberland, C, University of California: Switch-hitter with outstanding power production this year; hit .344/.480/.678 with 16 homers, 38 walks, 40 strikeouts in 180 at-bats. Everyone likes the bat but his defense is problematic and may push him to first base.

Maybe he will stick with college. I guess we will see.

Braves picked 3 pitchers, those second too picks are being reported as very valuable picks. Many didn't think they would be available when the Braves picked them.

Add another pitcher with our first pick in the 3rd round - LHP from Louisville, Drew Harrington...80th overall pick...5th selection by the Braves among the first 80 picks. 3 LHP's, 1 RHP, 1 catcher so far.

Braves continue to load up on pitchers - taking RHP's in the 4th and 5th rounds.

the front office has been saying all along that they were setting up for 2017 and the new stadium. Guess we will see, they certainly have the payroll room for it.

They also said they weren't going to dismantle the team, among other things. At this point, I simply don't believe a word they say. I hope you're right, although rebuilding via the FA market is both expensive and risky. If they were going the "blow it up and start over" method, I'd prefer they trade for young position players, keeping the young stars they already had (Simmons, Kimbrel, Perraza, etc.) and building off of that. You'd think they felt the organization was toxic or something.

Connor Justus to the Angels in the 5th round...156th pick overall...congrats to CJ. He'd be smart to head on to the professional ranks, IMO.

Good news is we have a good one coming in from Mays HS and have some others returning who can play middle infield.

Brandon Gold to the Rockies in the 12th round.

Matthew Gorst to the Red Sox in the 12th round.

Arden Pabst to the Pirates in the 12th round.

All are likely gone. Pabst definitely.

With the next international signing window opening on July 2, Baseball America’s Ben Badler profiles (in two separate pieces) 10 youngsters likely to receive seven-figure bonuses. Kevin Maitan is perhaps the mostly highly-touted player of the entire 2016-17 class, as the 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstop is rumored to be in line for a bonus north of $4MM, most likely from the Braves. “Nobody is a can’t miss but it’s hard to see him missing,” one scout says of Maitan. As always, it’s well worth getting a BA subscription to read the full scouting reports and news, including how the Braves, Padres and A’s are connected to two players each, with others rumored to be signing with the Nationals, Astros, Rockies and Mariners.

Braves update:

Last Friday they beat the Cubs and one of the best pitchers in baseball this year. Then finish the series with two big losses. a 1-2 series against the Cubs isn't that bad considering where this team is right now.

The Reds roll into town with a worse pitching staff than the Braves. Team ERA is 5.52
The Braves respond to this opportunity by hitting 2 home runs and scoring 8 runs. However, the Braves pitchers walk 8 batters in the game. The last 3 walks in the 9th and plating the 9th run for the Reds.

Braves are now firmly in last place. Minnesota has won a few and have 20 wins now.

Good. This season is going nowhere. We are building for the future. Get that #1 pick in next year's MLB Draft.

Some recent #1 overall picks for note...

2015 - Dansby Swanson, now in Braves minor league system
2012 - Carlos Correa, now starting shortstop for the Astros
2011 - Gerrit Cole, now in starting rotation for the Pirates (and sporting a 2.77 ERA)
2010 - Bryce Harper, MVP candidate with the Nats
2009 - Stephen Strasburg, starter for the Nats for a few years
2007 - David Price, starter for several years at the MLB level...now with the BoSox
2005 - Justin Upton
2002 - Joe Mauer, gosh has it been that long for this Twinkie?

Doesn't mean of course there is a guarantee at the #1 spot nor that the #2 or #3 can't be ultra-successful. But, if you are going to suck and sell your soul for the future, then stick to it and get that #1 pick. Go Reds! Go Twins!!

Matt Gonzalez signed with the Braves and heading to Orlando to get going... http://georgiatech.blog.ajc.com/2016/06/14/dream-come-true-for-techs-matt-gonzalez-now-a-brave/

Connor Justus wants to give his signing bonus to his parents to repay college loans... http://georgiatech.blog.ajc.com/2016/06/13/connor-justus-has-gracious-plan-for-signing-bonus-money/ (classy move by CJ!!!)

Braves busy trying to sign draft picks...Gonzo is the highest drafted pick they've signed so far per Tomahawk Take... https://tomahawktake.com/2016/06/14...already-sign-multiple-draft-picks-creatively/

I guess after yesterday we are going to need more pitchers

I think you may be inadvertently offending all pitchers. Even pitchers of beer, but I digress.

Instead, consider calling them something like... "Guys in Braves uniforms who stand on a hill and throw the ball to the catcher". I know I know. It's lengthy. Maybe 'rag arms' would be better. Same effect. Only 2 syllables...equivalent to "pitchers"...and, no offending to baseball pitchers...or even better, towards pitchers of beer.

Carry on!
