The AJC had a brief article announcing the death of Bobby Dews. It was all about him being a Braves coach/manager for thirty-three years, quoted two former Braves teammates and highlighted his love of writing. There was a brief reference to his having played baseball and basketball for Ga Tech but gave no particulars.
Either this was the result of lazy research of his accomplishments at Tech or judged as not important enough for mention.
I didn't follow Tech baseball in 59-61 when he played. But I sure did basketball.
Tech hoops was GOOD. Mainly because we had Roger Kaiser, who could take over a game with the most beautiful jumper ever. Imagine BJ Elder with even more elevation, a super high release and an even softer touch.
Bobby was the "playmaker guard". He was greased lightening, A true whippet. Looked to be 5'10-5'11" and no more than 150 pounds. Wore a huge cage around glasses he had to have. Drove the opponents crazy with ball movement, his driving, and always finding Kaiser for a sweet jumper. When Bobby and Roger (and Wayne Richards, if memory serves) were cooking, the brand new Alexander Coliseum was rockin'.
I think we were still in the SEC and came close to winning it with Kaiser and Dews. For sure; we made a splash on the national scene, advancing to the final 8 (don't think it was yet called "The Elite Eight") and ran into Ohio State and Jerry Lucas who went on to be national champs.
It was a high water mark for Tech hoops and I was disappointed that the AJC article on Bobby had nary a word about it. No, this is not an I-hate-the-media theme but rather being sad that noteworthy achievements by a total-effort consummate team player like Bobby weren't brought to the attention of a readership with many who would have really appreciated knowing. Back then, it was a big deal, deserving recognition.
