I had the game on TV Saturday, but didn't get to really sit and watch it. I finally got the chance to go back and re-watch most of it. It looked bad for the most part but I did notice some key things that I'll point out here. First and foremost, we could not stop the run. Their OL looked humongous compared to our DL and they blocked us well up front. That was the #1 factor in the outcome of this game IMO. We again had flashes, but there were just some small things that again kept us from capitalizing. Here are a few key moments I recall:
The fake punt was iffy to me. Harvin threw a dime, Blancato could've made a play, and they also could've called defensive PI on that play because the one defender got into Josh's body and never turned around to look for the ball. Either way, if you're going to go for it in that scenario, I think you have a better shot by leaving your offense on the field. That one was a head scratcher.
BC 3rd possession, we had them 3rd and 4 at midfield and Curry misses a wide open sack. BC converts on a long pass and they end up with a FG on that drive.
I've watched and re-watched the Gibbs KR about 15 times now and I don't see a hold anywhere. The only thing I see is what *might* could be a block in the back call but our guy pulled up with his hands up and barely bumped a BC guy so it would have been a pretty bad call there too. The ball is moved back to the 23 yard line, so the penalty happens somewhere around the 33? I don't see anything there. 2 plays later is the Mason "fumble" scoop and score. That's a 14 point swing. If that KR doesn't get called back, it's 17-7. Now instead it's 24-0.
Another question... when there are multiple dead ball personal foul penalties, how is only one of them enforced? So we could hit the QB late, then let the other 10 guys on defense get their licks in also but only one penalty will be enforced? Got it.
The onside kick was another head scratcher for doing it at that time. Wasn't well executed, kicked directly to the up man. The offsides call was also BS. Nobody was offsides.
That possession BC starts at our 40. 1st play from scrimmage we get great pressure and BC has to throw it away. Clayton got pressure and was being ridiculously held by 2 guys, 6-7 yards in the backfield. No flag. Should've put them way behind the sticks. at like 1st and 26 or 27. BC ends up scoring on a jet sweep on 3rd down that possession where we had 2 guys (Walker and Curry) take bad angles. Should have been a TFL by Walker, no gain at maximum if Curry makes the play. Instead it breaks for a TD.
Sims TD pass to Peje Harris was a thing of beauty. So here now the score is 31-14. How does it look again with that 14 point swing?? Should have been 24-21 at this point.
BC's next possession, Domineck misses a wide open TFL on Jurkovic that would have made it 3rd and long, instead now 3rd and 1. Later same possession held them to the 4th and 1 and they made us jump. Got to be disciplined there. If we don't jump they probably just call timeout or take the delay and punt. Later same possession the iffy PI call on Tre. We still held them to a FG after that, but that kept their drive alive for longer and we weren't able to get the ball back with any time left to do anything before halftime.
Opening 2nd half. Terrible tackling. We have to fix that. Guys looked almost uninspired.
BC 2nd possession - Tobias Oliver great speed and great tackle on the screen pass to force a punt. Punt return was a bad one, but I see where Nate didn't want to catch it. He was moving up at near full speed and I'm sure he was worried about fumbling. No way to tell that ball is going to roll that far.
The INT was another terrible play all the way around. For starters, not a good play call from back there, not a good throw by Sims, but an even worse job by the refs. The guy clearly was bobbling the ball the entire time. He was laying down with his shoulders out of bounds when he finally secured the ball. That is an incomplete pass.
The JaQuon Griffin late hit was late, but not nearly as egregious as the TV announcer (Herzlich, BC homer) made it sound. He goes, "Oh yeah that's like 3 seconds after the ball's thrown." It was one second, and that was on a slo-mo replay. So probably like 0.5 second late. Either way, they got the ball at the 12, it took them 4 plays and a penalty, and that was the last time they scored.
We scored again and had a well executed onside kick. Had it in the red zone again just failed to convert. Graham did play well and provided a little spark, but I'm still not sure pulling Sims there was the right move. He wasn't playing bad.
So all in all we lost by 21 with a huge 14 point swing in the 2nd quarter. Also basically gave BC a score with the INT on our own 12. Bad play call there, even worse call by the officials. Of course we wouldn't be any happier, but I think a lot of folks tune would be different if we lost 41-34 instead of 48-27. Like CPJ always said, "it's never as good or as bad as it seems." BC had one sustained scoring drive in the 2nd half. Little things. We have to clean up a few little things and have the breaks fall our way instead of the other way around. 2 turnovers that should've been overturned, both resulted in TD for BC. Called back kick return on phantom hold. It'll evenutally fall into place.
