Here are grades for the 2016 recruiting class by position. It will be interesting to hear what others think about this class.
Offensive line – D
GT needed at least four offensive linemen in this class. Only three were signed and two were under the radar. We created this problem for ourselves by only signing two offensive linemen in last year’s large class. It will be critical to sign four good offensive linemen in the 2017 class.
Quarterback – B
Jay Jones and Lucas Johnson are two good candidates to bring in. We’ll find out if Jones can throw well enough and if Johnson can run the triple option well enough to be our future QB.
B-back – A-
Mills looks like a good fit for our offense. After signing so many backs last year, we didn’t need many backs this year.
A-back – B
Gantt could be a good fit for our offense but he was injured last fall. After signing so many backs last year, we didn’t need many backs this year.
Wide Receiver – B-
Dolphus looks like he can help. Anderson has speed. Camp was under the radar.
Defensive tackle – A-
GT needed to sign two in this class with at least one of them being the “immovable object” type. Mission accomplished.
Defensive end – A-
Woods already has good size and could be a good one.
Linebacker – C
GT signed two, one of which was under the radar.
Cornerback – D
GT missed on all of its Plan A targets here.
Safety – D
GT did not land a big safety, which was one of the biggest needs in this class. It will be critical to sign two in the 2017 class.
Summary – GT had 20 scholarships to give out, and signed 18 players. There will be more attrition before the season, so we’ll be well under 85 on scholarship (not counting walk-ons) by the fall. So GT could take some transfers. A transfer (especially a fifth year transfer) at safety, offensive line, linebacker, or defensive tackle would help.
