Get this thread going a little earlier than normal since this is a special week for many of us. Tech of course has extremely long and continuing close ties to The Masters.

More as the week progresses. For starters, to whet the whistle I give you one of the greatest shots in Masters history from one of our own...

Other than a chance of some passing t'storms on Thursday morning, WeatherUnderground's forecast for Augusta this week is pretty much rain-free... https://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=Augusta,+GA

Perhaps a little cooler than normal and some definite winds to deal with. The players don't mind the rain to soften and maybe slow down the greens some. Might the weather help lead to higher scores this week? If the winds are in the 10-15 mph area like WU advises on Thursday thru Saturday, that can be a difference maker at times. We'll see.

Pairings and tee times for our two Golfing J's this week at Augusta...

-Larry Mize will be paired with Victor Dubuisson (France, not Charlottesville campus) and Kevin Streelman (USA, Rutgers-Durham)
THURSDAY Group 3 - 8:42am
FRIDAY Group 18 - 11:38am

-Matt Kuchar will be paired with Jason Day (Australia) and Ernie Els (South Africa)
THURSDAY Group 25 - 1:06pm
FRIDAY Group 10 - 9:59am

Updated weather forecast...chance of thunderstorms overnight tonight and early Thursday morning which could put a delay into tomorrow's schedule...though, could soften the greens for the morning tee times. Once the system goes through, it is clear the rest of the week. It will be very windy each afternoon except Sunday.

Let's hope we see a lot of this from Kooch this weekend like he did at #15 a year ago...

Looks like the rain held off and everything is a go as planned this morning. Mize is on the course (Even after 2 holes).

I laid a unit on each of the following wagers just for the hell of it:

Kooch +150 over Day today
Kooch +160 to finish in top 20
Kooch +450 to finish in top 10
Kooch +6600 to win the Green Jacket

I have, of course, just assured Kooch won't make the cut.

edit note: of course, just as I post this reply Mize 3-putts #3 for a bogey to move to +1...hello, my name is The Kiss of Death ;)

Uh oh. Mize just put his approach shot on #11 into the drink. No miracles for him today on that hole. He was cruising pretty well through his round until that having parred every hole except the 3-putt for bogey as referenced earlier on #3. He has scrambled to make some pars, but he'll take a big hit here entering Amen Corner.

Hello. I am the Kiss of Death. Sheesh.

Kooch birdies the first 2 holes and then can't find a birdie for the rest of the round. He winds up with 5 bogeys sprinkled throughout en route to an opening round 75 (+3). He will have to play really well Friday to make the cut.

Jason Day was -5 heading to #15 today, but then went bogey, triple bogey, bogey before parring #18 to finish Even. Yikes!

Great to see Larry Mize make the cut this weekend. He just got going on his Saturday round and birdied #1 to get to +4. Way to go, Larry!

Kooch also made the cut. With windy conditions and dry lightning-fast greens, anybody who is - like Kooch - 8 strokes out heading into today is absolutely NOT out of contention. You can easily see some guys near the top throwing scores like 78 or so up today. Playing conditions may be easier tomorrow, but the pressure of Sunday at Augusta can be a factor as well.

Here's hoping Kooch and Larry can post a red number today. That may be an accomplishment. Certainly would've been yesterday. Note, I kind of like seeing the leader after 2 rounds at -4 in a major and specifically Augusta where in the past we've seen guys in double digits under par.

Kooch pars #18 working out of the sand and sinking a 10-ft putt. He finishes Even for the day which is a very good score. Only 1 score better of the finishers today so far. He can now get in the clubhouse and watch the field come back to him potentially as they deal with wind.

Smylie Kaufman who is sitting alone in 3rd at the moment was named after Georgia Tech All-American defensive end Smylie Gebhart.

"Gebhart was an undersized but over-achieving All-America defensive end for Georgia Tech in 1971. As Kaufman’s paternal grandmother’s cousin, Gebhart provided inspiration to his family while living as a quadriplegic after rupturing a disk in his neck. Kaufman’s grandfather, Alan, a former golf coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, was a frequent visitor to Gebhart’s home in Meridian, Miss."

Good stuff, mate. Thanks!

Sure looks like the Champions Dinner will once again be Texas Q.

Not so sure about the Texas Q. Jordan's driver issues haven't gone away. He pushed four off to the right today. I picked up Jason Day at +1000 after watching Spieth's tee shot on 17. Day plummeted to +550 by the time Jordan's round ended.

Kooch had an impressive round considering that he was playing when the wind was whipping up the worst. The guys in the final groups definitely caught a break with the wind dying down late in the day.

Kooch will tee off at 1:25pmET Sunday and is paired with fellow American, Billy Horschel.

Odd looking leaderboard with Smylie Kaufman and 58 year-old two-time Masters winner Bernhard Langer in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. I'll be pulling for the old guy tomorrow!

Completely correct! Smylie Gebhart was a hero of mine. The Dodd era, and shortly thereafter, produced some of the greatest Tech people of all time!!!

Smylie Gebhart is a hero of mine as well and I'll be pulling hard for the kid who was named after him tomorrow. I've got all sorts of reasons to pull for the guys atop the leaderboard. Spieth is my 14 year-old golfing daughter's hero (and he was truly accommodating when he gave her an autograph here in Austin a couple weeks ago), Smylie was named after one of my GT heros, Bernhard is 58 years old and won his first Masters during my freshman year at GT, and I've got Jason day paying off at 10-1 odds should he win this thing. I'm pretty close to being in a can't lose situation!

I agree. The leaderboard is filled with people I would love to see win it!

The 1970 GT defense was one of it's best ever. Gebhart, Perdoni, Lewis, Flowers, Beavin, Hoats, Ford, etc. Went up to #1 Notre Dame and lost a 10-7 war. Was a fun team to watch!

Bringing back wonderful memories of Smylie, Rock and Jeff Ford. Three of my all-time favorites. We expected a great defense every year!

Went ahead and added Langer +2500 to go along with Day +1000 that I locked in during yesterday's round.

Langer winning would be one of the best sports stories ever. And an inspiration to all us 55+ guys!!

Sure would be! As someone who just came up short against my 14 year old kid over 9 holes this morning, I need that inspiration!

I get it! Some of these kids we play with hit it ridiculous distances. But us old men can out fox em.....the same way Coach Dodd did at Bitsy Grant!

Just great stuff! Love the clips with the old wrestling announcer Freddie Miller! Youtube GT vs Ala 1962. To me that was the greatest GT game ever, and maybe the best college game ever; GT 7 Ala 6 over Bear, Namath, LeeRoy Jordan and a Bama team on a 2 year win streak that pundits said was unbeatable.

The story that goes with it is priceless; Bryant in his hotel room before the game chain smoking and scared to death of Coach Dodd whipping him that day....which he did!!

I had a game ball from that '62 game vs. 'Bama, gave it back to my Dad, who then gave it to Tech. He played at Bitsy, with Coach all the time. My American History/Political Science Teacher at North Fulton(she was a lawyer, also), played Tennis with them as kids at Grant. She lived to be in her '90's, always consumed fast food, never cooked. Consider that advice as my gift to you mates!

Kooch's bogey-birdie-fest continues. Bogeys #1 and then birdies #2. Of course, #2 is a birdie hole where if you walk away with a par you have lost a stroke to the field.

Kooch started out bogey-birdie yesterday and then birdied #3. Hoping he can duplicate that.

Kooch bogeys the par-4 #3 after hitting his drive to 86 yards from the pin. Ugh.

Bad approach above the hole on the fringe leading to a virtually impossible 3rd shot to stop going downhill (wound up 7 feet past to which he missed the par attempt).

Kooch puts his tee shot in the drink on #12 and winds up with a triple-bogey 6. Well, so much for my unit plays on him making the top 10 or top 20. Damn.

Kooch follows the triple bogey with birdies on 13 and 14, a par on 15, and then chips in for a birdie on 16. Nice comeback after the debacle on 12.

Spieth with 4 straight birdies to finish his front 9. Running away with it now. Does he present the Green Jacket to himself? :D

Side note, Ollie Schneiderjans loses championship today in a playoff on the WebDotCom Tournament in Bolivar, Colombia.

Jordan's meltdown on twelve was hard to watch. He has been struggling with that right miss for a while now so the tee shot wasn't terribly shocking. But that chunk of a wedge shot after the drop was shocking - and I truly felt for the guy. It can be a damned frustrating game.
