Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. Miami These are used to give others a different perspective on how to watch football. I don’t do this to disparage players or coaches, but to give insight to GT enthusiast on what I’ve learned as a player and avid football fan.
Today, the focus is on the margin. A lot of talk about how close we are to getting over the hump. This game, imo, really emphasizes how much 1 catch, 1 additional turnover, or a bad snap away form getting Ws
The margin? A missed assignment. On this power play, we have 2 blockers on 1 defender. That is never good on the edge! I’m fairly certain that the MA is on #54 Williams here. I believe he should block down on the middle LB, #60 pulls and kick the DE and #27 Mason lead blocks on the LB that makes the tackle. If this is blocked as described. Gibbs is off to the races
This is a perfect mirror how to play this double
Stack and how not to play it. Usually there is an inside/out call being stated btw your teammate. WR go inside he’s yours outside he’s mine. The Wr Immediately takes an outside stem and Walton correctly takes. It gets weird when #13 Walker follows and Walton inexplicably turns around. This miscommunication leads to another big play.
One of our staple plays here, “Duos”. Two double teams on the DTs and Mason must read the LB. Mason does a great job setting him up with a slight lean to the right and makes a nice jump cut as soon as the LB displace himself. Great job here
Ima blame this one on lack of experience. In the boot action, the DE is in a bind. Either rush Jeff or cover #80 Leonard. The one thing you cannot do here his run back towards the QB & reduce the space & bring another defender with you. If Leonard slips up field it’s dump off for a few yards Maybe a first down
3iar off the same inside zone and another great seal block by #77 Cochran. Gibbs in the open field is undefeated
The margin? Timing
Another 2 back set. This is blocked pretty well upfront. Appears Mason thrown off track by bumping into #54 Williams. If Mason could’ve sealed #17 here, this would’ve been a big gain. I’m also curious why Williams helped on the DT. This appears to be the thing that messed up the timing
These the plays we must make to get over the hump. Gotta get the pick here
The margin? A missed assignment
We set this play up all game with the jet motion. Gibbs is wide open on the wheel but due to the poor blocking, we don’t have enough time for TD play
Appears to be Cover 4 to field side. Safeties are aggressive in run support in cov 4 but not that aggressive. CGC talked about the crack & release by the WR in the presser, imo there is still no excuse for Walton to have his eyes in the back field
Gap integrity here. #4 Jackson tends to do this a lot. He’ll jump hop out of his assignment and the play go for a big gain. Quez goes left when the RB shoulders are perpendicular to the LOS. No reason to jump at all
No way to put other than #10 Sims had a bad day. I watched form and I’m not sure it’s arm slot or him just not using his entire body to throw but whatever it is, he short armed a lot of medium throws. Gotta get that fixed
Great job by the WRs being physical on the CBs. Gibbs absolutely ran threw the angle the safety had on him for TD
Just my weekly highlight of how bad the ACC refs are. Watch how bad #10 Eley get held here. This is horrible and inexcusable for the refs
The good margin? Win the lose
Low man wins!!! Great job by #0 Brooks to get underneath the OG pads, push him off the LOS, and make the stop
How close are we? One block away. This to me is the most critical play of the game. Big 4th down stop and ball in Miami territory with all the momentum. This appear to be well setup HB Screen but we cant make the block at RT and suffer a huge loss.
Gotta make the play here. #10 Eley base is extremely too wide here to make the tackle in the hole. No need to leave your feet. Play like you’re 6’4 240lb. These are the little things that make that differentiate a TFL or a big run
I would love to hear CDP explanation or thoughts on why Jeff appeared to short arm a lot of his throws. Here is 1st down we absolutely needed. I’m also curious on hot routes when the slot notice nickel blitz? nonetheless good job by #8 finding the open spot but bad execution on Sims for the short hop
This margin? A missed tackle. After a week of tackling Thack, you would think arm tackling would be a minimum. Nope. Neither DB put a shoulder pad on the WR and he splits the vice. We must clean this up going forward
Missed read when we needed it the most. Another poor throw by Sims, but it may be even worst after having success all day on the check & release that Sims missed Mason on a easier throw on what would have gone for a 1st down
